The 9th EPMESC was successfully held in Macao in November of 2003. At the end of the conference the Board of the EPMESC series decided that the next conference would be held in a city of the mainland of China. Also I was assigned to be the Chair person of the Conference. No doubt this is a great honor to me and also a challenge because there are so many professional international conferences in computational mechanics happening frequently in the world. After the successful organizing of WCCM6 in Beijing, September of 2004,1 engaged to organize the 10th EPMESC. First of all, I had to choose the venue of the Conference. After some investigation and a lot of negotiation we went to see the site of the venue in Sanya, Hainan Island, the south-most city in China. Finally we made the decision. The most important reason for the choice was the ecological environment of this city. It is beneficial to our health after hard work. We scientists and engineers need a good relaxing place after working hard- a place to enjoy life with friends and family. Sanya is an ideal place and a real green city. Blue sky and white clouds, the peaceful sea and the long beach with white sand, shells and pearls, no pollution and no industry. Everything is so beautiful Here are the printed proceedings of EPMESC X, held on August 21-23, 2006 in Sanya, Hainan Island of China. It includes 14 full papers of plenary and semi-plenary lectures and approximately 166 one-page summaries. The accompanying CD-ROM includes all 180 full papers presented at the conference.

While the human eye can practically cope only with two aspects of light, brightness and colour, for many animals polarization is a further source of visual information. This fascinating phenomenon of polarization sensitivity is comprehensively treated by Horvath and Varju. Starting with a short introduction into imaging polarimetry - an efficient technique for measuring light polarization - various polarization patterns occurring in nature are presented. Among them are the polarizational characteristics of water surfaces, mirages and the underwater light field as well as the celestial polarization patterns affected by the illumination conditions of sunrise, sunset, clear or cloudy skies, moonshine and total solar eclipses. The major part of the book is dedicated to the question: How can animals perceive and use the natural and artificial polarization patterns? Following a detailed compendium of the physiological basis of polarization sensitivity, several case studies of animal behaviour determined or influenced by polarization are presented. It is shown how arial, terrestrial and aquatic animals use the celestial and underwater polarization for orientation, e. g. how polarized light serves honeybees or ants as a compass. Further, it is explained how man-made objects affecting the natural optical environment may disorientate animals. For instance, as in the case where oil or glass surfaces, asphalt roads, or plastic sheets used in agriculture can be more attractive for water-seeking polarotactic insects than the water surface, and where mayflies lay their eggs on dry asphalt roads or cars.

Various psychologists have studied how the outer self is formed (impression formation), how people control their outer selves (impression management), and so forth. But how is the outer self related to the inner self? There is an easy answer, but it is wrong. The easy answer is that the outer self is mostly the same as the inner self. Put another way, it is that people reveal their true selves to others in a honest and straightforward fashion, and that others accurately perceive the individual as he or she really is. This monograph is a collective work. The names appear ing on the front cover are those of the people who worked on every chapter. But the contributions of others were also very important: C. Risito for Chapters I, II and IV, K. Peiffer for III, IV, VI, IX R. J. Ballieu for I and IX, Dang Chau Phien for VI and IX, J. L. Corne for VII and VIII. The idea of writing this book originated in a seminar held at the University of Louvain during the academic year 1971-72. Two years later, a first draft was completed. However, it was unsatisfactory mainly because it was ex ce~sively abstract and lacked examples. It was then decided to write it again, taking advantage of -some remarks of the students to whom it had been partly addressed. The actual text is this second version. The subject matter is stability theory in the general setting of ordinary differential equations using what is known as Liapunov's direct or second method. We concentrate our efforts on this method, not because we underrate those which appear more powerful in some circumstances, but because it is important enough, along with its modern developments, to justify the writing of an up-to-date monograph.
