Population Change, Labor Markets and Sustainable Growth, Volume 281: Towards a New Economic Paradigm (Contributions to Economic Analysis) (Contributions to Economic Analysis) A. Mason and M. Yamaguchi (Eds.) Elsevier, Academic Press, Contributions to economic analysis -- 281., Amsterdam, Netherlands, 2007
Birth rates are dropping to ever-lower levels around the world. Populations are growing more slowly and, in some cases, beginning to decline. Rapid population aging has begun in the West and parts of Asia and is just over the horizon elsewhere. The demographic changes, their economic implications, and possible policy responses are the subject matter of this volume. What will be the effects on economic performance? How can couples be encouraged to marry and have children? Can educational reform lead to a more productive young labor force helping to offset their meager numbers? Can labor market reform extend the work life of older workers without damaging the interests of others? How should the social safety net that supports the elderly evolve in ways that are both fair and sustainable? The papers in this volume draw on international experience to address these issues, but emphasize the experience of Japan the country with the world's oldest population. It includes contributors such as: Noriko Aoki, Akira Kawaguchi, Allen Kelley, Wei Huang, Robert Hutchens, Tomoko Kinugasa, Andrew Mason, Naoki Mitani, Takashi Oshio, Robert Schmidt, and Mitoshi Yamaguchi.

Multimodality Therapy for Gastric Cancer : Appendix: Database of the Cancer Institute Hospital Toshifusa Nakajima (auth.), Toshifusa Nakajima M.D., Ph.D., Toshiharu Yamaguchi M.D., Ph.D. (eds.) Springer Tokyo, 1, 1999
Recent clinical trials of adjuvant therapy for gastric cancer in Japan have shown improved survival benefits, but the results have been considered controversial and have been viewed with some skepticism in the West. Until now, the efforts of Japanese surgical oncologists in multimodality therapy have not been fully understood because they have not been adequately reported in English. This volume now presents the experience and expertise of Japanese surgeons who utilize preoperative or intraoperative chemotherapy, or a combination of systemic and regional chemotherapy. Their collected work provides valuable insight in the Japanese perspective and success in treating gastric cancer. Included in the appendix is an extensive tabular analysis of the gastric cancer database at the Cancer Institute Hospital of Tokyo. Probably the largest such database in the world from a single institution, the analyses present the state of the art in treatment of gastric cancer. Erscheinungsdatum: 21.10.2012

Advances in chemical conversions for mitigating carbon dioxide [recurso electrónico] proceedings of the Fourth International Conference on Carbon Dioxide Utilization, Kyoto, Japan, September 7-11, 1997 T. Inui, M. Anpo, K. Izui, S. Yanagida and T. Yamaguchi (Eds.) Academic Press, Elsevier, Studies in surface science and catalysis ;, 114, Amsterdam, New York, Netherlands, 1998
Global environmental problems, especially global warming caused by the accelerative accumulation of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, are of great importance for humans. The world's population is now approaching 6 billion, and is still increasing. Developments in communication systems and transportation tools have made the circulation of information, technologies and materials easier, which results in rapid economic growth, particularly in the East and Southeastern Asian countries. Increased affluence leads to an increased consumption of fossil fuels. Inevitably, this leads to an increase in carbon dioxide emission and environmentally hazardous materials which in turn precipitates climatic changes on a global scale. Recent studies showed that the increase in carbon dioxide emission for last year was the highest in the past seven years, and the total amount of carbon dioxide emission from all over the world reached 6.5 billion tons. Furthermore, one cannot overlook the report which appeared recently in Nature, that the floor-area of the iceberg in the South Pole has already decreased by 25% in the past five decades.<p>Over 260 scientists and engineers from 21 countries who had a strong interest and wished to contribute to solve the carbon dioxide problem attended this conference. The papers presented in this volume cover most of the possibilities of the chemical conversion of carbon dioxide.

Moonshine, the Monster, and Related Topics: Joint Research Conference on Moonshine, the Monster, and Related Topics June 18-23, 1994 Mount Holyoke ... Massachusetts Chongying Dong, Geoffrey Mason (ed.) Amer Mathematical Society, Contemporary Mathematics 193, 1996
'One of the great legacies of the classification of the finite simple groups is the existence of the Monster $\ldots$. Work of Borcherds and Frenkel-Lepowsky-Meurman led to the notion of a vertex (operator) algebra, which was seen to be the same as the chiral algebras used by physicists in conformal field theory $\ldots$. The connections with physics have proven to be invaluable, and it seems likely that another branch of mathematics whose origins are eerily similar to those of moonshine - that is, elliptic cohomology - will turn out to be very relevant too' - from the Preface. This volume contains the proceedings of a Joint Summer Research Conference held at Mount Holyoke College in June 1994. As perhaps the first conference proceedings devoted exclusively to the subject known as 'Moonshine', this work contains something for many mathematicians and physicists. It features: results concerning the monster simple group and other simple groups; connections with elliptic cohomology; connections with 2-dimensional conformal field theory; the role of operads; and, connections with modular functions. ""Much of Moonshine, the Monster, and Related Topics"" features new results not available anywhere else

The Sinus Node : Structure, Function, and Clinical Relevance Jay L. Jordan, Iwao Yamaguchi, William J. Mandel (auth.), Felix I. M. Bonke (eds.) Springer Netherlands, 1, 1978
For the clinician the sinus node is more or less a hidden structure and only by indirect assessment he is able to say something about the function of this center of pacemaker activity. The morphologist, however, is able to describe the structural microscopic and even electronmicroscopic features of this structure. The only disadvantage is that, as soon as he is coming into the picture, the tissue is dead. The physiologist tries to investigate the electrophysiological behavior of the sinus node. Since there is not a human being willing to give his sinus node for research, he has to do his investigation on isolated preparations of animals. Though there are a lot of experts in the field of the sinus node they nearly never speak the same 'language'. Therefore, it was my dream to bring all those people - or at least some of them -together on a workshop. I had the feeling that it was important to organize such a meeting without an audience but only with 'experts'. Erscheinungsdatum: 13.10.2011

Clinical Application of Computational Mechanics to the Cardiovascular System Takami Yamaguchi (auth.), Takami Yamaguchi M.D., Ph.D. (eds.) Springer Tokyo, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2000, 2013
Vascular diseases, particularly atherosclerosis, are the most frequent and critical underlying fatal disorders in the industrialized world. Cardiovascular deaths are the leading cause of death in the Western world. Although cancer or malignant neoplasms recently have topped the list of causes of deaths in Japan, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases bring about more deaths than cancer if they are reclassified into a unified category of diseases of the vascular system. The National Cardiovascular Center was established by the Ministry of Health and Welfare of Japan to combat cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Since the Center was opened, we have continued to support basic and clinical sturlies of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases within as weil as outside the Center. Clinical studies that we have supported in modern diagnostic and therapeutic measures against cardio- and cerebrovascular diseases have made remarkable advances in recent years, especially in medical imaging technology including CT and MRI, and in interventional measures including balloon angioplasty and other catheter-based treatments. We are proud of the significant improvement in the overall survival rate and the quality of life of patients suffering from vascular disorders. However, there are still many essential difficulties remaining in the diagnosis and treatment of vascular disorders. Such difficulties necessitate further fundamental studies not only from the practical aspect but also from the integrated perspectives of medicine, biology, and engineering. Physical Metallurgy and processing of Intermetallic Compounds M. Yamaguchi, Y. Shirai (auth.), N. S. Stoloff, V. K. Sikka (eds.) Springer; Springer US, 1, 1996
The attractive physical and mechanical properties of ordered intermetallic alloys have been recognized since early in this century. However, periodic attempts to develop intermetallics for structural applications were unsuc cessful, due in major part to the twin handicaps of inadequate low-temper ature ductility or toughness, together with poor elevated-temperature creep strength. The discovery, in 1979, by Aoki and Izumi in Japan that small additions of boron caused a dramatic improvement in the ductility of Ni3Al was a major factor in launching a new wave of fundamental and applied research on intermetallics. Another important factor was the issuance in 1984 of a National Materials Advisory Board reported entitled "Structural Uses for Ductile Ordered Alloys," which identified numerous potential defense-related applications and proposed the launching of a coordinated development program to gather engineering property and processing data. A substantial research effort on titanium aluminides was already underway at the Air Force Materials Laboratory at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio and, with Air Force support, at several industrial and university laboratories. Smaller programs also were under way at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, under Department of Energy sponsorship. These research efforts were soon augmented in the United States by funding from Department of Defense agencies such as Office of Naval Research and Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and by the National Science Foundation.

Semiconductor Interfaces at the Sub-Nanometer Scale (Nato Science Series E:, 243) Y. Horikoshi, M. Kawashima, H. Yamaguchi, M. Sato (auth.), H. W. M. Salemink, M. D. Pashley (eds.) Springer Netherlands : Imprint : Springer, NATO ASI Series 243, 1, 1993
The Advanced Research Workshop on the Physical Properties of Semiconductor Interfaces at the Sub-Nanometer Scale was held from 31 August to 2 September, 1992, in Riva del Garda. Italy. The aim of the workshop was to bring together experts in different aspects of the study of semiconductor interfaces and in small-scale devices where the interface properties can be very significant It was our aim that this would help focus research of the growth and characterization of semiconductor interfaces at the atomic scale on the issues that will have the greatest impact on devices of the future. Some 30 participants from industrial and academic research institutes and from 11 countries contributed to the workshop with papers on their recent wode. . 'There was ample time for discussion after each talk. as well as a summary discussion at the end of the meeting. The major themes of the meeting are described below. The meeting included several talks relating to the different growth techniques used in heteroepitaxial growth of semiconductors. Horikoshi discussed the atomistic processes involved in MBE, MEE and MOCVD, presenting results of experimental RHEED and photoluminescence measurements; Foxon compared the merits of MBE, MOCVD, and eBE growth; Molder described RHEED studies of Si/Ge growth by GSMBE, and Pashley discussed the role of surface reconstructions in MBE growth as seen from STM studies on GaAs. On the theoretical side, Vvedensky described several different methods to model growth: molecular dynamics, Monte Carlo techniques, and analytic modeling.

Role of Blood Flow in Atherogenesis : Proceedings of the International Symposium, Hyogo, October 1987 S. Glagov, C. K. Zarins, D. P. Giddens, D. N. Ku (auth.), Prof. Dr. Yoji Yoshida, Dr. Takami Yamaguchi, Prof. Dr. Colin G. Caro, Prof. Dr. Seymour Glagov, Prof. Dr. Robert M. Nerem (eds.) Springer Tokyo, 1, 1988
It has long been recognized that atherosclerosis tends to develop in certain areas of the artery. Blood flow is thus considered to play an important role in such development. However, the direct mechanisms of the influence of blood flow on atherosclerosis are controversial. Recently, a number of active studies in this field have been carried out around the world. This volume consists of the contributions to a symposium held on the subject and offers a report of latest findings. Erscheinungsdatum: 12.02.2012

Lie Groups, Geometric Structures and Differential Equations: 100 Years After Sophus Lie (Advanced Studies in Pure Mathematics) edited by Tohru Morimoto, Hajime Sato, Keizo Yamaguchi Mathematical Society of Japan ; Distributed outside Japan by the American Mathematical Society, Advanced studies in pure mathematics ;, 37, Advanced studies in pure mathematics (Tokyo, Japan) ;, 37., Tokyo, [Providence, RI], Japan, 2002
The blending of algebra, geometry, and differential equations has a long and distinguished history, dating back to the work of Sophus Lie and Elie Cartan. Overviewing the depth of their influence over the past 100 years presents a formidable challenge. A conference was held on the centennial of Lie's death to reflect upon and celebrate his pursuits, later developments, and what the future may hold. This volume showcases the contents, atmosphere, and results of that conference. Of particular importance are two survey articles: Morimoto develops a synthetic study of Lie groups, geometric structures, and differential equations from a unified viewpoint of nilpotent geometry. Yamaguchi and Yatsui discuss the geometry of higher order differential equations of finite type. Contributed research articles cover a wide range of disciplines, from geometry of differential equations, CR-geometry, and differential geometry to topics in mathematical physics. This volume is intended for graduate students studying differential geometry and analyis and advanced graduate students and researchers interested in an overview of the most recent progress in these fields. Information for our distributors: Published for the Mathematical Society of Japan by Kinokuniya, Tokyo, and distributed worldwide, except in Japan, by the AMS. All commercial channel discounts apply.

lgli/K:\!genesis\0day\kolxoz\83\M_Mathematics\MV_Probability\Gine E., et al. (eds.) High dimensional probability II (Birkhauser, 2000)(ISBN 9781461271116)(600dpi)(T)(490s)_MV_.djvu
High dimensional probability II Victor H. de la Peña, Michael J. Klass, Tze Leung Lai (auth.), Evarist Giné, David M. Mason, Jon A. Wellner (eds.) Birkhäuser Boston, Progress in Probability, vol. 47, Softcover repr. of the hardcover 1st ed. 2000, New York, post 2005], cop. 2000
High dimensional probability, in the sense that encompasses the topics rep resented in this volume, began about thirty years ago with research in two related areas: limit theorems for sums of independent Banach space valued random vectors and general Gaussian processes. An important feature in these past research studies has been the fact that they highlighted the es sential probabilistic nature of the problems considered. In part, this was because, by working on a general Banach space, one had to discard the extra, and often extraneous, structure imposed by random variables taking values in a Euclidean space, or by processes being indexed by sets in R or Rd. Doing this led to striking advances, particularly in Gaussian process theory. It also led to the creation or introduction of powerful new tools, such as randomization, decoupling, moment and exponential inequalities, chaining, isoperimetry and concentration of measure, which apply to areas well beyond those for which they were created. The general theory of em pirical processes, with its vast applications in statistics, the study of local times of Markov processes, certain problems in harmonic analysis, and the general theory of stochastic processes are just several of the broad areas in which Gaussian process techniques and techniques from probability in Banach spaces have made a substantial impact. Parallel to this work on probability in Banach spaces, classical proba bility and empirical process theory were enriched by the development of powerful results in strong approximations. Climate Change Mitigation: A Balanced Approach to Climate Change (Lecture Notes in Energy Book 4) Mitsutsune Yamaguchi (auth.), Mitsutsune Yamaguchi (eds.) Springer-Verlag London, Lecture Notes in Energy, Lecture Notes in Energy 4, 1, 2012
Climate change is mainly caused by emissions of CO2 from burning fossil fuels, which provides over 85% of the world’s energy. Strategies for mitigating climate change are connected with handling economic and social activities through their effects on the use of energy. __Climate Change Mitigation__ investigates the costs of mitigation measures in comparison to their benefits, and compares the effects of implementing mitigation measures on various areas such as energy security and energy economy. “For 20 years, diplomats have struggled to make progress on climate change, mostly because global diplomacy is not well-linked to the realities of how nations and firms control emissions and adapt to the impacts of a changing climate. In this excellent book, Dr Yamaguchi has assembled experts to guide the redesign of global policy. The authors underscore how global warming efforts must resonate with other policy goals.” David G. Victor, Director, Laboratory on International Law and Regulation and Professor, University of California San Diego “__Climate Change Mitigation__ clarifies that climate change cannot be controlled by sacrificing economic growth or other global problems; however, action to control climate change cannot be delayed.Climate policy is pervasive and affects all dimensions of international policy;but it cannot be too ambitious: a balanced approach between mitigation and adaptation, economic growth and resource management, and short term development and long term investments, should be adopted. I recommend its reading.” Carlo Carraro,President, Ca’ Foscari University of Venice “The International Energy Agency estimates for every $1 of investment now toward sustainable energy, $4 of future spending can be saved. There is a business case for companies to reduce energy use. Companies in the energy and resource intensive industries must lead the way.” Chad Holliday, Chairman. World Business Council for Sustainable Development and former Chair and CEO, DuPont

Magneto-Science: Magnetic Field Effects on Materials: Fundamentals and Applications (Springer Series in Materials Science) Masuhiro Yamaguchi; Yoshifumi Tanimoto Springer Science & Business Media, Springer Series in Materials Science, Springer Series in Materials Science, 2006
"It is a dream of chemists and physicists to use magnetism, an important physical property of many materials, to control chemical and physical processes. With new manufacturing technologies for superconducting magnets, it has become possible to produce strong magnetic fields of 10 Tesla or more for applications in chemistry and physics. New magnetic phenomena, useful for processing functional molecules with improved quality, have been discovered recently. They open up exciting possibilities for studying and applying magnetic field effects in the chemical and physical processes of diamagnetic, paramagnetic and ferromagnetic materials. This volume will serve as a useful reference for specialists and non-specialists interested in this exciting new area of megneto-science."--Publisher's description

Race, Markets, and Social Outcomes (Recent Economic Thought, 54) Patrick L. Mason, Rhonda Williams (auth.), Patrick L. Mason, Rhonda Williams (eds.) Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, Recent Economic Thought Series 54, 1, 1997
THE JANUS-FACE OF RACE: REFLEC- TIONS ON ECONOMIC THEORY Patrick L. Mason and Rhonda Williams Many economists are willing to accept that race is a significant factor in US eco nomic and social affairs. Yet the professional literature displays a peculiar schizo phrenia when faced with the task of actually formulating what race means and how race works in our political economy. On the one hand, race matters when the dis cussion is focused on anti-social behavior, social choices, and undesired market outcomes. Inexplicably, African Americans are more likely to prefer welfare, lower labor force participation, and unemployment. On the other hand, race does not matter when the subject of discussion is economically productive or socially accept able activities and legal market choices (for example, wages and employment). This Janus-faced construction of race is maintained by economists' stubborn ad herence to the market power hypothesis. The market power hypothesis asserts that racial discrimination and market competition are inversely correlated. Discrimina tory behavior will persist only in those sectors of society where the competitive forces of the market are least operative. When applied to the labor market, the mar ket power hypothesis suggests that pre- and post-labor market decisions represent disjoint sets. On average, members of a disadvantaged social group may accumulate a lower amount of or a lower quality of productive attributes because of discrimina tion in marital, residential, or school choice, or because of substantial animosity in day-to-day interpersonal relations with members of a privileged group. A complex cavity was fabricated to improve the mode selection property of a gyrotron for the 400 GHz second-harmonic oscillation. A combination of the TE8,3 and the TE8,5 modes was selected to provide resonant coupling. In the experiment, many fundamental and several second-harmonic modes oscillated independently in either the first or the second cavity. However, no fundamental oscillation was observed in the operation magnetic field region of the TE8,3/TE8,5 mode. The fabrication error of the cavity radii was successfully controlled to be smaller than 1 μm. The oscillation of the design mode was observed by the frequency measurements. However, a mode competition with the TE3,5 mode occurred.

Algorithms for approximation II : based on the proceedings of the Second International Conference on Algorithms for Approximation, held at Royal Military College of Science, Shrivenham, July 1988 E. Arge, M. Dæhlen, T. Lyche, K. Mørken (auth.), J. C. Mason, M. G. Cox (eds.) Springer US, Algorithms for approximation, no 2, 1990
## Preface This book teils the story of 4 summer days in Shrivenham in 1988, when 88 people came to the Second International Conference on Aigorithms for Approximation at the Royal Military College of Science (RMCS) from July 12 to 15. Of course the book only teils part of the story. It cannot easily convey the good humour and very happy atmosphere that prevailed, and it does not catalogue the many friendships that were made, the excellent me als and refreshments that were enjoyed, and the plethora of social activities that took place. The conference was organized for two main reasons. First, there were many requests for a Second Shrivenham Conference from those who attended the First in 1985. Secondly, it had clearly been established at the First Conference that there was a demand and need for a regular meeting which emphasized the algorithmic aspects and applications of approximation. There was also a continuing need for more conferences in the UK in the general area of approximation. The meeting itself was run under the auspices of Cranfield Institute of Technology, of which RMCS is a faculty, and financial support was gratefully received from the US Air Force European Office of Aerospace Research and Development. The organizing cammittee was Maurice Cax (NPL) and Anne Daman and John Mason (RMCS), and the RMCS local organizers were very ably assisted by Elizabeth Smith and Pamela Moore. It was a lass to RMCS and to the conference organization when Anne Daman left early in 1988 to seek her fortune in the USA, but there were celebrations when she returned in July as Mrs Anne Trefethen to receive her Ph.D. degree and attend the conference with her husband. The ten invited speakers, chosen by the organizing committee, covered a broad spectrum of topics and came from a wide range of countries. All of their papers appear in these proceedings.

Microbial Infections: Role of Biological Response Modifiers (Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology, 319) Evan M. Hersh (auth.), Herman Friedman, Thomas W. Klein, Hideyo Yamaguchi (eds.) Springer US : Imprint : Springer, Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology, Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology 319, 1, 1992
This volume is based on the Proceedings of the International Conference on "Microbial Infections: Role of Biological Response Modifiers" held in Tampa, FL, May 29-31, 1991. The major purpose of this conference was to bring together in one forum prominent investigators from around the world studying a variety of microbial pathogens, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi, and the effects of biological response modifiers (BRM) on the immune response to these microorganisms. BRM have been widely utilized in the area of antitumor resistance and include not only experimental tumor cell vaccines, but also biologically active substances such as cytokines, i. e. , interferons, tumor necrosis factor, and interleukins, as well as products from bacteria which influence host resistance mechanisms. It is the belief of the organizers of this Conference that it was very timely to discuss in detail BRMs as they impact on microbial infections per se. It is now widely accepted that immunocompromised individuals, including those exposed to immunosuppressive substances such as antimetabolites used for chemothera py of malignancies, or infectious agents, such as the human immunodeficiency virus and other viruses which depress the immune response and, in turn, affect a host so as to become highly susceptible to opportunistic microorganisms, benefit from BRM stimulation of their immune system. A wide variety of immunomodulators are now being studied in terms of treating infectious diseases, as well as malignancy and autoimmune diseases. Erscheinungsdatum: 01.11.2012

Physical Acoustics V11 : Principles and Methods WARREN P. MASON and R.N. THURSTON (Eds.) Academic Press, Elsevier, Physical Acoustics, Physical Acoustics 11, 1975
Physical Acoustics: Principles and Methods reviews the principles and methods of physical acoustics and covers topics ranging from third sound in superfluid helium films to the method of matched asymptotic expansions (MAE). Ultrasonic diffraction from single apertures and its application to pulse measurements and crystal physics are also discussed, together with elastic surface wave devices, acoustic emission, and nonlinear effects in piezoelectric quartz crystals. Comprised of six chapters, this volume begins with a detailed treatment of the theory of third sound in superfluid helium films, third sound resonators, and many other properties. The second chapter is devoted to the MAE method, with emphasis on its ability to produce results in acoustics and to provide insight into classical problems. Subsequent chapters deal with bulk and surface waves; phase coded signals and their generation and detection by interdigital grid structures; elastic surface wave devices such as pulse compression filters; and nonlinear effects in quartz crystals. The final chapter describes acoustic emission and the noise produced in materials when they are strained. This book will be of interest to physicists.

This is a collection of papers by participants at the High Dimensional Probability VI Meeting held from October 9-14, 2011 at the Banff International Research Station in Banff, Alberta, Canada. High Dimensional Probability (HDP) is an area of mathematics that includes the study of probability distributions and limit theorems in infinite dimensional spaces such as Hilbert spaces and Banach spaces. The most remarkable feature of this area is that it has resulted in the creation of powerful new tools and perspectives, whose range of application has led to interactions with other areas of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. These include random matrix theory, nonparametric statistics, empirical process theory, statistical learning theory, concentration of measure phenomena, strong and weak approximations, distribution function estimation in high dimensions, combinatorial optimization, and random graph theory. The papers in this volume show that HDP theory continues to develop new tools, methods, techniques and perspectives to analyze the random phenomena. Both researchers and advanced students will find this book of great use for learning about new avenues of research.

Physical acoustics, vol.11: principles and methods Mason W.P., Thurston R.N. (eds.) London: Academic Press 1975., 1ST, 1975

To realize the GW-class power source for Microwave Rocket, the cost reduction of gyrotrons is one of the solutions to lower the threshold to realize the beam station. In this study, a sub-MW-class gyrotron which adapted a smaller bore diameter of the superconducting magnet was designed and developed. The output power, pulse duration, and frequency are respectively 600 kW, 100 μs, and 94 GHz. The electron current is driven by a charged capacitor bank and in-house IGBT switches. The gyrotron tube was aligned with the superconducting magnet to achieve high electric efficiency.

Maturation phenomenon in cerebral ischemia proceedings of the satellite symposium of the XIth International Congress of Neuropathology, Tokyo, September 11 - 12, 1990 U. Ito, T. Yamaguchi, H. Tomita, O. Tone (auth.), Umeo Ito M.D., T. Kirino M.D., T. Kuroiwa M.D., Igor Klatzo M.D. (eds.) Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg, 1, 1992
It has been well recognized that following an ischemic insult many nerve cells of the brain are not killed outright, but may suffer a "delayed neuronal death" or even recover. This led to the concept of "maturation phenomenon" with its main implication that the maturation of ischemic lesions may provide a "window of opportunity" i.e. a period of time when the injury to neuronal elements is still reversible, and during which an application of proper therapeutic measures might be successful. The symposium on Maturation Phenomenon in Cerebral Ischemia was the first international meeting focussed primarily on this subject and the resulting publication contains presentations and discussionsby prominent researchers engaged in this field. This book should stimulate further research on potential of brain tissue for recovery, and particularly with regard to a functional recovery of neurons suffering from chronic ischemic injury. Erscheinungsdatum: 14.09.1992

lgli/Morimoto T., et al. (eds.) Lie groups, geometric structures and differential equations.. 100 years after Sophus Lie (ASPM37, MS Japan, 2002)(ISBN 4931469213)(T)(O)(501s)_MD_.djvu
Lie Groups, Geometric Structures and Differential Equations: 100 Years After Sophus Lie (Advanced Studies in Pure Mathematics) Kyoto Daigaku Suri Kaiseki Kenkyujo, Tohru Morimoto (editor), Yoichi Miyaoka (editor) Mathematical Society of Japan ; Distributed outside Japan by the American Mathematical Society, Advanced studies in pure mathematics ;, 37, Advanced studies in pure mathematics (Tokyo, Japan) ;, 37., Tokyo, [Providence, RI], Japan, 2002

Scientific Software Systems : Based on the Proceedings of the International Symposium on Scientific Software and Systems, Held at Royal Military College of Science, Shrivenham, July 1988 G. T. Symm (auth.), J. C. Mason, M. G. Cox (eds.) Springer Netherlands, 1, 1990
The main aim of this book is to present a broader view of scientific software than has been common in the past. The provision of scientific software is no longer a matter of just writing 'good computer programs', but rather it is concerned with the development of an integrated software system wI-,ich offers the user facilities which approach all that he needs in terms of speed, accuracy and convenience. This means that due account must, for example, be taken of the high-speed computing capabilities of parallel processors, the exact computing features of symbolic mathematical systems, the presentational potentialities of computer graphics, and the advisory aspects of knowledge-based and expert systems. When suites of numerical software programs or routines are supported by such ranges of facilities, then they can be justly described as 'scientific software systems', and that is why we have adopted such a title here. The assembly of this book was a direct consequence of the running of a one-day international symposium, with the same broad aim of advocating a 'systems approach', under the title 'Scientific Software and Systems'. This Symposium was held at the Royal Military College of Science (RMCS) in Shrivenham on July 11, 1988 and was attended by 85 people. A very busy but most enjoyable day included invited talks, poster presentations and demonstrations of software products, not to mention various social activi ties. Erscheinungsdatum: 02.10.2011

Other Terrors Vince A. Liaguno, Rena Mason (Eds.) HarperCollins, 2022
An anthology of original new horror stories edited by Bram Stoker Award winners Vince Liaguno and Rena Mason that showcases authors from underrepresented backgrounds telling terrifying tales of what it means to be, or merely to seem, "other"Offering original new stories from some of the biggest names in horror as well as some of the hottest up-and-coming talents, Other Fears will provide the ultimate reading experience for horror fans who want to celebrate fear of "the other." Be they of a different culture, a different background, a different sexual preference, a different belief system, or a different skin color, some people simply aren't part of the dominant community—and are perceived as scary. Humans are almost instinctively inclined to fear what's different, as foolish as that may be, and there are a multitude of individuals who have spent far too long on the outside looking in. And the thing about the outside is . . . it's much larger than you...

Rice blast : interaction with rice and control : proceedings of the 3rd International Rice Blast Conference Isamu Yamaguchi (auth.), Shinji Kawasaki (eds.) Springer Netherlands : Imprint : Springer, Softcover reprint of hardcover 1st ed. 2004, 2010
For the researchers of rice blast disease and plant blast resistances, IRBC is an important chance to exchange information and discussion on rice blast, which has been a rather minor topic on international plant pathological meetings. Especially for those in Asia, where the blast is one the most important agricultural concerns, IRBC was a unique opportunity to discuss on rice blast with scientists in the West, in where it is achieving the positions of a model pathogen and a model system to study plant microbe interactions. However, I and probably many of Japanese blast researchers have felt an accumulated frustration that, in world plant pathological conferences, the information presented from Asia is only a small fraction although they have much more information that may be valuable for world plant pathologists and resistance researchers. I have noticed also some concept gaps between the researchers in East and West, particularly in the field resistance and the multiline system. There seems to be few who study field resistance and multilines in the West, while in Japan they are expected to become mainstream strategies to suppress the disease. Surely there is a great value in rd having 3 IRBC in Japan for cultivating wider communication between the scientists of the East and West.
