The Shephelah during the Iron Age (Recent Archaeological Studies) Oded Lipschits (editor); Aren M. Maeir (editor) Pennsylvania State University Press, Winona Lake, Indiana, 2017
The area of the Judean Foothills – the biblical__Shephelah__ – has in recent years become one of the most intensively excavated regions in the world. Numerous projects, at sites of different types and utilizing various methodological approaches, are actively excavating in this region. Of particular importance are the discoveries dating to the Iron Age, a period when this region was a transition zone between various cultures—Philistine, Canaanite, Judahite, and Israelite. The current volume includes reports from eight of the excavations currently being conducted in the region (Azekah, Beth Shemesh, Gezer, Khirbet Qeiyafa, Tel Burna, Tel Halif, Tell es-Safi/Gath, and Tel Zayit), as well as a general study of the region by Ido Koch. The importance of this volume lies not only in the fact that it collects up-to-date reports on most of the current excavations in the region but also demonstrates the lively, at times even boisterous, scholarly discussions taking place on various issues relating to the archaeology and history of the Iron Age Shephelah and its immediate environs. This volume serves as an excellent introduction to current research on the Iron Age in this crucial zone and also serves as a reflection of current trends, methodologies, and approaches in the archaeology of the Southern Levant.

Tell Es-Safi / Gath II : Excavations and Studies Maeir, Aren M. and Uziel, Joe Zaphon Verlag, Ägypten und Altes Testament, Band 105, Münster, 2020
The present volume is the second volume in the series of final reports of the Tell es-Safi/Gath Archaeological Project. In the first volume, various studies and reports on and relating to the project were presented, up until the 2010 season. In the current volume an assortment of excavation reports and topical studies of finds are presented. Chapter 2: final report on Ḥorvat Shimon, a small Iron IIB site, located ca. 1 km to the west of Tell es-Safi/Gath. Chapter 3 deals with the excavations at various locations along the Iron IIA (9th century BCE) Aramean siege system. In addition to the elements relating to the siege system itself, other finds that were discovered, primarily in Area C6, are described and discussed. Chapter 4 presents the final publication of a late Iron I/early Iron IIA tomb, excavated in 2006, including studies on the human remains, isotopic analyses on these remains, pottery, radiocarbon dating, faunal analysis, and the jewelry and amulets discovered in the tomb. Chapter 5 is the final report on the stratigraphy and architecture of the excavations in Upper Area F, near the summit of the site. Chapter 6 discusses the Middle Bronze Age at the site. In this chapter, a general survey of the MB on Tell es-Safi/Gath, based on materials found in the surface survey and the excavations in Area F is presented. Chapter 7 is an updated summary and final report on the Late Bronze Age finds from Area E. The report includes a variety of studies on the remains from the LB, including the stone implements, shells, beads, a scarab, the imported pottery, figurines, lithics and the archaeobotanical remains. Chapter 8 presents an analysis of stone weights found in the excavations up until the 2014 season. Chapter 9 presents the relatively small amount of coins found during the project, including surface finds and finds from the excavations.

nexusstc/In the Midst of the Jordan: The Jordan Valley during the Middle Bronze Age (circa 2000-1500 BCE). Archaeological and Historical Correlates/09df321daf46fb8b70ca4967d1ce8a82.pdf
"In the midst of the Jordan" : the Jordan Valley during the Middle Bronze Age, circa 2000- 1500 BCE : archaeological and historical correlates Aren M. Maeir; with a contribution by E. S. Marcus Verlag der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, Contributions to the Chronology of the Eastern Mediterranean 26, 2011
This volume is a study of the archaeology and history of the Jordan Valley of the Southern Levant (from Dan in the north till the Dead Sea in the south) during the Middle Bronze Age (ca. 2000-1500 BCE). The study attempts to summarize a large body of relevant materials bringing together a variety of types of finds and approaches, to form a coherent picture on the role, and significance of this region during this period. Starting from a general regional overview (including an in-depth geographical, ecological and environmental summary), a critical review of the finds from the various sites in the region are presented, followed by a discussion of various aspects of the material culture (including a detailed discussion of the pottery of region throughout the various phases of this period), the historical sources, trade and chronology, and an attempt to synthesize the settlement pattern and processes, from the beginning of the Middle Bronze Age until the onset of the Late Bronze Age. While including traditional aspects of analysis such as comparative stratigraphy, pottery typology, and the discussion of the historical sources, this study also attempts to incorporate a wide range of other perspectives, including extensive pottery provenience studies (Neutron Activation Analysis), the study of settlement ecology and population dynamics, and attempts to classify the production patterns, and political and economic structures in these and adjacent regions during this time frame. In addition to dealing specifically with the finds from within the Jordan Valley, the ramifications of these finds on other regions (and issues) in the Middle Bronze Age, and vice-a-versa, influences of other regions and sites on the Jordan Valley. Thus, general questions such as the underlying mechanisms behind the beginning, development and end of the Middle Bronze Age are discusses, as well as controversial topics such as the chronology of the period and the role of the city of Hazor. The volume concludes with an appendix with a detailed list on all MB sites in the Jordan Valley, and a list and discussion of all 14C dates from the Jordan Valley (by Ezra Marcus). The volume should be of interest to scholars dealing the Bronze and Iron Ages of the Eastern Mediterranean, as those connected to the study of material culture, production, pottery provenience, chronology, trade, settlement patterns and cultural interactions, both in the ancient near east but in archaeology and ancient history in general as well. The Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages of Southern Canaan: Selected Studies on the Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages of Southern Canaan Aren M. Maeir, Itzhaq Shai, Chris McKinny, Itzik Shai De Gruyter, Inc.; De Gruyter; de Gruyter, Archaeology of the biblical worlds, 2, Berlin, 2019
The Late Bronze Age in the Levant is a period of much interest to archaeologists, historians and biblical scholars. This is a period with intense international relations, rich in ancient sources, which provide historical data for the period, and is a crucial formative period for the peoples and cultures who play central roles in the Hebrew Bible. Recent archaeological research in Israel and surrounding countries has provided new, exciting, and in some cases, groundbreaking finds, interpretations and understanding of this period. The fourteen papers in this volume represent the proceedings of a conference held at Bar-Ilan University in 2014 (with the additional of several invited papers not presented at the conference), which provide both overviews of Late Bronze Age finds from several important sites in Israel and surrounding countries, as well as several synthetic studies on the various issues relating to the period. These papers, by and large, represent a broad view of cuttting edge research in the archaeology of the ancient Levant in general, and on the Late Bronze Age specifically.

nexusstc/The Rural Landscape of Ancient Israel/4b12677e4f2cb671be2874816a4e028f.pdf
The Rural Landscape of Ancient Israel (BAR International) Aren M. Maeir, Shimʻon Dar, Zeev Safrai University of Michigan Press, BAR British Archaeological Reports International Series 1121, 2003
Israel is, and always has been, a geographical, historical and most importantly cultural crossroads, linking three continents, three of the great ancient religions, and thousands of years of history and culture. Archaeology in this region has always been interested in urban areas, in ancient sites such as Jerusalem, but the rural area of this country has always been neglected. This is suprising considering that this has always been a region of small settlements, villagers, and herdsmen, such as those depicted in biblical sources. This study is aimed at depicting the wide ranges of rural lifestyles that have been present in Israel over the various periods of history. There are reports beginning with the Early Bronze age, passing through the Iron Age, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, and ranging as far forward as the period of occupation under the Mamlukes. This effectively spans the periods from the late Prehistoric through to Modern times. There are 10 reports in this study, and they deal with various artificial aspects of the rural way of life in ancient Israel in terms of the history and archaeology of various sites, and these reports deal with a number of sites or areas during a specific time-span. Studies focus upon particular themes such as Economic Activities (e.g. agriculture or trade), Settlement Patterns and Processes, and the Physical Construction of rural sites (e.g. village layout, architecture, roads and communications). The ten studies present do not cover the area that so wide-ranging a general title would suggest, but they do cover a large range of topics and archaeological methods. The first topic in this report is one giving an overview of Landscape Archaeology in the Southern Levant Region, going over various methods and practices carried out. This gives a good introduction to the report, and subsequent reports gradually build up a picture of the rural landscape of Israel. One interesting and unusual approach is taken by the contribution of J.Schwartz, whose report on "Dogs in Ancient Rural Jewish Society" is of particular interest. This perspective of study focuses on rural Israel in terms of sheep/herding dogs, hunting dogs, guard dogs, and the kufri-dogs (a sort of tamed wild dog or Jackal). This is a good example of how this study tackles life in rural Israel and gives an interesting and approachable account.

"The history of the ancient Near East in the 12th-10th centuries BCE is still an unsolved riddle. At times the veil is lifted and tiny components of this elaborate puzzle glow in a new light. But many questions are as yet unanswered, and most details are still vague. Nevertheless, the broad outlines of this age are fairly well agreed by most scholars: the three superpowers Egypt, Hatti and Assyria gradually lost their hold and their influence in the area: first the Hittites, just after 1200 BCE, and a few dozens of years later, Egypt and Assyria. Historians generally concur that after the reign of Tukulti-Ninurta I (1243-1208 BCE), Assyria plunged into a prolonged decline, gradually losing its western territories to the Aramaean invaders. (...) The studies presented in this book touch on diverse aspects of human activities (political, social, economic, and cultural), and refer to different parts of the ancient Near East: from Melid and Hanigalbat in the north to Egypt and Kush in the south and from Assyria and Babylonia in the East to the Kingdom of Taita and (southern) Philistia in the west. They do though center mainly on the Bible and the history of ancient Israel and its western and eastern neighbors, as compared with other ancient Near Eastern cultures. The papers present an extensive vista of views--from biblical and archaeological perspectives and indeed most of them were written from an inter disciplinary standpoint."

Here, more than 55 colleagues gather to honor him with a wide range of essays, organized in 7 sections: I. Early Bronze Age Studies II. Middle and Late Bronze Age Studies III. Philistine/Sea Peoples Studies IV. Iron Age Studies V. Historical, Biblical, and Epigraphic Studies VI. Jerusalem Studies VII. Post–Iron Age Studies An international group of contributors includes: E. Braun, I. Finkelstein, D. Ussishkin, P. M. Fischer, R. Gophna, D. Gazit, R. Greenberg, P. de Miroschedji, B. Sass, M. And the Canaanite Was Then in the Land: Selected Studies on the Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages of Southern Canaan (Archaeology of Biblical Worlds) (Archaeology of the Biblical Worlds, 2) Aren M. Maeir; Itzhak Shai; Chris McKinny De Gruyter, Inc.; De Gruyter; de Gruyter, Archaeology of the biblical worlds, 2, Berlin, 2019

The ancient site of Tel Gezer (Abu-Shûsheh/Tell Jezer/Tell el-Jazari) is located in Central Israel, approximately halfway between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. It is situated in the northern section of the Judean foothills (Shephelah), not far from the southernmost hills of south-western Samaria. Raymond-Charles Weill commenced his career in archaeology and Egyptology at a relatively late age. After receiving his training in Egyptology and archaeology in France, Baron Rothschild invited him to excavate in Jerusalem, on lands belonging to the Baron. These excavations were conducted both before (in 1913-1914) and after (in 1923-1924) the First World War, and were duly reported by Weill (1920; 1947). Apparently, ancient tombs had been revealed on the site by the settlers, and Weill, who by chance was excavating at the time for the Baron in Jerusalem, was called in to excavate at Gezer. Both seasons of Weill's excavations at Gezer (in 1914 and 1924) coincided with his work in Jerusalem. His results were never fully published, and this present volume represents the author's long researches to make some of Weill's discoveries more widely available. With contributions by NavaPanitz-Cohen, Dan Barag, Othmar Keel, Nachum Applbaum and Yaakov H. Applbaum

"In the midst of the Jordan" : the Jordan Valley during the Middle Bronze Age, circa 2000- 1500 BCE : archaeological and historical correlates Aren M. Maeir; with a contribution by E. S. Marcus Verlag der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften, Denkschriften der Gesamtakademie / Österr. Akad. der Wiss -- Bd. 64, Contributions to the chronology of the Eastern Mediterranean -- vol. 26, Wien, Austria, 2010
The volume should be of interest to scholars dealing the Bronze and Iron Ages of the Eastern Mediterranean, as those connected to the study of material culture, production, pottery provenience, chronology, trade, settlement patterns and cultural interactions, both in the ancient near east but in archaeology and ancient history in general as well. nexusstc/The Rural Landscape of Ancient Israel/5463b33ea976d880f5824e9f376d379b.pdf
The Rural Landscape of Ancient Israel (BAR International) Maeir, Aren M. (editor);Dar, Shimon (editor);Safrai, Ze’ev (editor) University of Michigan Press, BAR INTERNATIONAL SERIES; 1121, OXFORD, Unknown, 2003

This volume combines the papers held at the Minerva Center's "Research on Israel and Aram in Biblical Times" conference (Leipzig 2018) on the subject of writing and re-writing history by deliberate destruction in the regions of Syria, Palestine, and Mesopotamia. An international group of scholars studies the subject using a multi-perspective and interdisciplinary approach. Archeological studies, ancient Near Eastern studies, and biblical studies focused on the destruction of ancient sites in Israel and Judah in the 1st millennium BC. The perspective of the defeated Israelites, Jerusalemites, and Judeans is described in detail in the Old Testament and in postbiblical literature and shows that the destructions in the past were a cultural and identity creator of the first magnitude. The longue duree of the practice of reshaping the past through the deliberate destruction of a cultural heritage in order to shape the present according to current interests becomes evident based on the Neo-Assyrian Empire's practice up to the modern era and is demonstrated by the example of the Arabian-Muslim conquest of Aram as well as current Turkish politics.

This congress volume of the Minerva Center for the Relations between Israel and Aram in Biblical Times combines theoretical approaches to historical research on autonomy or independence in ancient cultures and then presents articles which study the subject using Aram and Israel in antiquity as examples. These articles show clearly how strongly Syria and Palestine were linked to one another and how they constituted one single cultural region which was connected by its economy, politics, language, religion, and culture.

Tell es-Safi/Gath III: Studies on the Early Bronze Age, Part 1 Itzhaq Shai, Haskel J. Greenfield, Aren M. Maeir Metzler, Kai Alexander, Dr.. Zaphon, Ägypten und Altes Testament, 122, 2023
Tell Es-Safi/Gath is one of the largest pre-classical sites in the ancient Levant, continuously settled from the Protohis- toric periods until Modern times and is identified as ancient Canaanite and Philistine Gath (known from the el Amarna letters, Assyrian texts, and the Bible), Medieval Blanche Garde, and the modern Palestinian village of Tell es-Safi. Archaeologically, the site is of noteworthy importance in the study of the Bronze and Iron Age of the Levant, and in particular in relationship to the Canaanite, Philistine and Israelite cultures. Since 1996, a long-term international project has been studying the cultural and environmental history of the site and its surroundings. The volume, edited by Aren Maeir, is the first of a planned series of final reports on the project and deals primarily with the results of the 1996 through 2005 seasons. Discussions include a general overview of the project up to 2010, and studies on the geography and the environment, the written sources relating to the differ- ent periods, the history of research, the architecture and stratigraphy of the various excavation areas, and assorted finds of various classes (such as pottery, stone and bone objects, glyptic, inscriptions, and ancient fauna and flora). In addition, there are studies on pottery provenience, the archaeological surface survey, ground penetrating radar results, data mining of pottery finds, and a general overview of the Early Bronze Age of the Judean Foothills (Shephelah).

Tell es-Safi/Gath III: The Early Bronze Age, Part I Shai, I.; Greenfield, H. J.; Maeir, A. M.(eds.) Metzler, Kai Alexander, Dr.. Zaphon, AAT 122, 2023
Erscheinungsdatum: 01.03.2024

Kurdish-English and English-Kurdish Dictionary: Kurmanci Dialect (Dictionary) Baran Rizgar Bay Foreign Language Books, 2000
This dictionary is very practical and useful, especially for modern journalistic writing. Given the great profusion of sub-dialects in Kurdish, even within the Kurmanci dialect itself, there will be words that the user will be unable to find in this dictionary, but despite these limitations, created more by the situation of the Kurdish language itself than due to any shortcomings on the part of the compiler, this will likely be the preferred Kurdish dictionary for most English-speaking students of Kurdish. It is more practical than Michael Chyet's massive dictionary, especially for everyday use, and much superior to the tiny and almost useless dictionary of Amindarov or the one by Celebi and Sipka, which appears to have been copied largely from Rizgar, but with the unfortunate addition of a great many errors. Kurdish words and phrases. 20000 English words and phrases. Examples of usage. Statistics on Kurdish sounds. Pronunciation. Kurdish Grammar. Roman, Arabic and Cyrillic Scripts used in Kurdish. Kurdish Numbers. Irregular Verbs. Map of Kurdish inhabited regions.

The Fire Signals of Lachish : Studies in the Archaeology and History of Israel in the Late Bronze Age, Iron Age, and Persian Period in Honor of David Ussishkin Israel Finkelstein (editor); Nadav Na'aman (editor) Penn State University Press, Pennsylvania State University Press, Winona Lake, Ind, 2011
In this volume honoring Tel Aviv University archaeologist David Ussishkin, colleagues and students representing some of the major names in the field today present 25 essays on a variety of topics of interest to the honoree. The contributions cover a range of periods from the Late Bronze Age through the Persian period and disparate subjects such as Judahite bullae, destruction levels at Megiddo, a diversity of results from various tells in Israel (and one in Jordan), Egyptian influence on Canaan, the city of Jerusalem and its temple, and much on the archaeology of the Shephelah, an area of particular interest to the honoree—who is best known for his excavations at Tell ed-Duweir, the site of biblical Lachish. The volume takes its title from a reference in one of the Lachish ostraca. From 1966 until his retirement in 2004, David Ussishkin taught in the Department of Archaeology and Ancient Near Eastern Studies at Tel Aviv University. Between 1975 and 1978, he served as Chair of the Department, and between 1980 and 1984 as the Director of the Institute of Archaeology. In 1996, he was nominated incumbent of the Austria Chair in Archaeology of the Land of Israel in the Biblical Period. He served as the editor __of Tel Aviv: The Journal of Archaeology of Tel Aviv Univers__ity for 30 years.

Unearthing Jerusalem : 150 Years of Archaeological Research in the Holy City Katharina Galor (editor); Gideon Avni (editor) Penn State University Press, Pennsylvania State University Press, Winona Lake, Ind, 2011
On a cold winter morning in January of 1851, a small group of people approached the monumental façade of an ancient rock-cut burial cave located north of the Old City of Jerusalem. The team, consisting of two Europeans and a number of local workers, was led by Louis-Félicien Caignart de Saulcy—descendant of a noble Flemish family who later was to become a distinguished member of the French parliament. As an amateur archaeologist and a devout Catholic, de Saulcy was attracted to the Holy Land and Jerusalem in particular and was obsessed by his desire to uncover some tangible evidence for the city’s glorious past. However, unlike numerous other European pilgrims, researchers and adventurers before him, de Saulcy was determined to expose the evidence by physically excavating ancient sites. His first object of investigation constitutes one of the most attractive and mysterious monumental burial caves within the vicinity of the Old City, from then onward to be referred to as the “Tomb of the Kings” (Kubur al-Muluk). By conducting an archaeological investigation, de Saulcy tried to prove that this complex represented no less than the monumental sepulcher of the biblical Davidic Dynasty. His brief exploration of the burial complex in 1851 led to the discovery of several ancient artifacts, including sizeable marble fragments of one or several sarcophagi. It would take him another 13 years to raise the funds for a more comprehensive investigation of the site. On November 17, 1863, de Saulcy returned to Jerusalem with a larger team to initiate what would later be referred to as the first archaeological excavation to be conducted in the city.—(from the “Preface”) In 2006, some two dozen contemporary archaeologists and historians met at Brown University, in Providence RI, to present papers and illustrations marking the 150th anniversary of modern archaeological exploration of the Holy City. The papers from that conference are published here, presented in 5 major sections: (1) The History of Research, (2) From Early Humans to the Iron Age, (3) The Roman Period, (4) The Byzantine Period, and (5) The Early Islamic and Medieval Periods. The volume is heavily illustrated with materials from historical archives as well as from contemporary excavations. It provides a helpful and informative introduction to the history of the various national and religious organizations that have sponsored excavations in the Holy Land and Jerusalem in particular, as well as a summary of the current status of excavations in Jerusalem.
