It is now seen as the progenitor of the tJ-Iactam family of antibiotics, which are characterised by the possession of the four membered tJ-Iactam ring. Chapters in this book will describe how current research has demonstrated that other lactam structures may also show antibacterial activity. Penicillins and cephalosporins (2), the second member of the tJ-Iactam antibiotic family, were both originally discovered in fungi but later detected in streptomycetes. Until 1970 penicillins and cephalosporins were the only examples of naturally occurring tJ-Iactam antibiotics. We have become expert at snaring neutrinos to gain insight on nuclear processes at work in the Sun and supernovae. We have direct evidence for the existence of neutron stars and gravitational waves, and persuasive arguments for the detection of black holes on scales of individual stars as weH as galactic nuclei. With so much that is new, and so many new problems revealed by knowledge al ready gained, almost all parts ofthis book had to be reconsidered and rewritten. In the second edition, which appeared ten years ago, I had only added a chapter on the formation of galaxies, stars, and planets. For this third edition, such piecemeal mea sures no longer seemed appropriate. Much ofthe book has been completely revised. My principal aim in this third edition, as before, was to present a wide range of astrophysical topics in sufficient depth to give the reader a general quantitative understanding ofthe subject. The book outlines cosmic events but does not portray them in detail-it provides aseries of astrophysical sketches. I think this approach still befits the prevailing uncertainties and rapidly evolving views in astrophysics.

The expansion was initiated in the early 1960s by the synthesis and characterization of compounds containing some new macrocyclic ligands. The synthesis of compounds which may serve as model systems for some natural products containing large rings as ligands provided the main goal for the early expansion of research effort; indeed, a recurrent theme behind much of the reported chemistry has been the analogy between synthetic macrocyclic compounds and many natural-product systems. More recently, the emphases of reported research have ranged over the whole spectrum of chemistry, and the number of publications that discuss macrocyclic chemistry has increased at a dramatic rate. The completed research has been reported in a variety of journals throughout the world but there has been no previous attempt to bring the major developments together under one cover. This book, therefore, attempts to satisfy the need for a single source in which there is both a collection and a correlation of information concerning the coordination chemistry of macrocyclic compounds. This book assesses the changes that the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) could produce by boosting the competitiveness of firms in India and Korea. It evaluates the CEPA in terms of its effects on the environment and natural resources of the importing and exporting countries alike. Further, it employs the revealed comparative advantage (RCA) and relative trade advantage (RTA) methods of analysis to gauge the influence of the CEPA on industrial competitiveness in both host and receiving countries. While the CEPA would increase trade between India and Korea in their respective strong domains, the book argues that, given the nature of the exported and imported goods and products, India would be more susceptible to serious environmental impacts than would Korea. The book subsequently presents these impacts in a qualitative framework and stresses the need for a comprehensive valuation of not only environmental impacts, but also the losses due to tariff cuts and the gains due to increased trade between the two countries.

The analysis includes both uniform and nonuniform geometries, including nonuniformities resulting from manufacturing errors, and leads to a new class of designs for miniature machines and other devices. The magnetic circuit analysis involves both undesirable characteristics (such as core loss and nonlinear distortion in precise, high-resolution encoders), and also desirable aspects that can be used in the form of AC motor-amplifier integrity, hysteresis motors, magnetic encoders, etc. The more than 125 figures serve to visualize the magnetic coupling geometry, the physics of the conceptual design, and the analytical tools.
