Ultra-Wideband Pulse-based Radio: Reliable Communication over a Wideband Channel (Analog Circuits and Signal Processing) Wim Vereecken, Michiel Steyaert (auth.) Springer Netherlands, Analog Circuits and Signal Processing, 1, 2009
Today's booming expanse of personal wireless radio communications is a rich source of new challenges for the designer of the underlying enabling technologies. Because the wireless channel is a shared transmission medium with only very limited resources, a trade-off must be made between mobility and the number of simultaneous users in a confined geographical area. __Ultra-Wideband Pulse-based Radio__ lays the foundations of a new radio transceiver architecture, based on the Ultra-Wideband pulse-based radio principle. Instead of a continuous-time modulated carrier, the pulse-based radio system uses short electromagnetic pulses with a wide spectral footprint. This has considerable advantages for the reliability of a wireless link in an indoor environment. However, what is not accounted for in most high-level theoretical perspectives, is that a wide transmission bandwidth opens up a Pandora's box of many complications at receiver side. A real-world wireless channel, for example, suffers from multipath reflections: multiple, delayed versions of the same signal arrive at the receive antenna and start to interfere with one another, an effect that is known as intersymbol interference. Also, a wide transmission band is a wide open door for in-band interfering signals, caused by other transmitters in the same frequency band. A specially crafted interferer suppression and signal reconstruction (ISSR) algorithm is presented in this book. Without active intervention from the transmitter, the ISSR algorithm is capable of on-the-fly cleaning of frequency bands which have fallen victim to multipath fading or narrowband interference. The unique blend of pulse-based radio, a simple modulation scheme and a powerful signal reconstruction system make the presented pulse-based radio system a very promising alternative for the high-end (but complex) OFDM-based modulation schemes currently used in many WLAN applications.

Design of Low-Voltage Low-Power CMOS Delta-Sigma A/D Converters (The Springer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science Book 493) Vincenzo Peluso, Michiel Steyaert, Willy Sansen (auth.) Springer US, The Springer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science 493, 1, 1999
Design of Low-Voltage Low-Power CMOS Delta-Sigma A/D Converters investigates the feasibility of designing Delta-Sigma Analog to Digital Converters for very low supply voltage (lower than 1.5V) and low power operation in standard CMOS processes. The chosen technique of implementation is the Switched Opamp Technique which provides Switched Capacitor operation at low supply voltage without the need to apply voltage multipliers or low VtMOST devices. A method of implementing the classic single loop and cascaded Delta-Sigma modulator topologies with half delay integrators is presented. Those topologies are studied in order to find the parameters that maximise the performance in terms of peak SNR. Based on a linear model, the performance degradations of higher order single loop and cascaded modulators, compared to a hypothetical ideal modulator, are quantified. An overview of low voltage Switched Capacitor design techniques, such as the use of voltage multipliers, low VtMOST devices and the Switched Opamp Technique, is given. An in-depth discussion of the present status of the Switched Opamp Technique covers the single-ended Original Switched Opamp Technique, the Modified Switched Opamp Technique, which allows lower supply voltage operation, and differential implementation including common mode control techniques. The restrictions imposed on the analog circuits by low supply voltage operation are investigated. Several low voltage circuit building blocks, some of which are new, are discussed. A new low voltage class AB OTA, especially suited for differential Switched Opamp applications, together with a common mode feedback amplifier and a comparator are presented and analyzed. As part of a systematic top-down design approach, the non-ideal charge transfer of the Switched Opamp integrator cell is modeled, based upon several models of the main opamp non-ideal characteristics. Behavioral simulations carried out with these models yield the required opamp specifications that ensure that the intended performance is met in an implementation. A power consumption analysis is performed. The influence of all design parameters, especially the low power supply voltage, is highlighted. Design guidelines towards low power operation are distilled. Two implementations are presented together with measurement results. The first one is a single-ended implementation of a Delta-Sigma ADC operating with 1.5V supply voltage and consuming 100 &mgr;W for a 74 dB dynamic range in a 3.4 kHz bandwidth. The second implementation is differential and operates with 900 mV. It achieves 77 dB dynamic range in 16 kHz bandwidth and consumes 40 &mgr;W. Design of Low-Voltage Low-Power CMOS Delta-Sigma A/D Converters is essential reading for analog design engineers and researchers. Erscheinungsdatum: 08.12.2010

Variation-Aware Analog Structural Synthesis: A Computational Intelligence Approach (Analog Circuits and Signal Processing) Trent McConaghy, Pieter Palmers, Peng Gao, Michiel Steyaert, Georges Gielen (auth.) Springer Netherlands, Analog Circuits and Signal Processing, 1st ed. 2009, Dordrecht, 2009
__Variation-Aware Analog Structural Synthesis__ describes computational intelligence-based tools for robust design of analog circuits. It starts with global variation-aware sizing and knowledge extraction, and progressively extends to variation-aware topology design. The computational intelligence techniques developed in this book generalize beyond analog CAD, to domains such as robotics, financial engineering, automotive design, and more. The tools are for: * **Globally-reliable variation-aware automated sizing** via SANGRIA, leveraging structural homotopy and response surface modeling. * **Template-free symbolic models** via CAFFEINE canonical form functions, for greater insight into the relationship between design/process variables and circuit performance/robustness. * **Topology selection and topology synthesis** via MOJITO. 30 well-known analog building blocks are hierarchically combined, leading to >100,000 different possible topologies which are all trustworthy by construction. MOJITO does multi-objective genetic programming-based search across these topologies with SPICE accuracy, to return a set of sized topologies on the optimal performance/yield tradeoff curve. * **Nonlinear sensitivity analysis, topology decision trees, and analytical tradeoffs**. With a data-mining perspective on Pareto-optimal topologies, this book shows how to do global nonlinear sensitivity analysis on topology and sizing variables, automatically extract a specs-to-topology decision tree, and determine analytical expressions of performance tradeoffs. * **Novel topology design**. The MOJITO-N and ISCLEs tools generate novel yet trustworthy topologies; including boosting digitally-sized circuits for analog functionality.

Static and Dynamic Performance Limitations for High Speed D/A Converters (The Springer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science (761)) Anne Van den Bosch, Michiel Steyaert, Willy Sansen (auth.) Springer US : Imprint : Springer, The Springer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science 761, 1, 2004

Static and Dynamic Performance Limitations for High Speed D/A Converters discusses the design and implementation of high speed current-steering CMOS digital-to-analog converters.
Starting from the definition of the basic specifications for a D/A converter, the elements determining the static and dynamic performance are identified. Different guidelines based on scientific derivations are suggested to optimize this performance. Furthermore, a new closed formula has been derived to account for the influence of the transistor mismatch on the achievable resolution of the current-steering D/A converter. To allow a thorough understanding of the dynamic behavior, a new factor has been introduced. Moreover, the frequency dependency of the output impedance introduces harmonic distortion components which can limit the maximum attainable spurious free dynamic range. Finally, the last part of the book gives an overview on different existing transistor mismatch models and the link with the static performance of the D/A converter.

Wireless CMOS Frequency Synthesizer Design (The Springer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science, 439) J. Craninckx, M. Steyaert (auth.) Springer US : Imprint : Springer, The Springer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science 439, 1, 1998
The recent boom in the mobile telecommunication market has trapped the interest of almost all electronic and communication companies worldwide. New applications arise every day, more and more countries are covered by digital cellular systems and the competition between the several providers has caused prices to drop rapidly. The creation of this essentially new market would not have been possible without the ap pearance of smalI, low-power, high-performant and certainly low-cost mobile termi nals. The evolution in microelectronics has played a dominant role in this by creating digital signal processing (DSP) chips with more and more computing power and com bining the discrete components of the RF front-end on a few ICs. This work is situated in this last area, i. e. the study of the full integration of the RF transceiver on a single die. Furthermore, in order to be compatible with the digital processing technology, a standard CMOS process without tuning, trimming or post-processing steps must be used. This should flatten the road towards the ultimate goal: the single chip mobile phone. The local oscillator (LO) frequency synthesizer poses some major problems for integration and is the subject of this work. The first, and also the largest, part of this text discusses the design of the Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO). The general phase noise theory of LC-oscillators is pre sented, and the concept of effective resistance and capacitance is introduced to char acterize and compare the performance of different LC-tanks. CMOS Wireless Transceiver Design by Jan Crols, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Heverlee, Belgium, Michiel Steyaert, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Heverlee, Belgium Springer US : Imprint : Springer, The Springer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science 411, 1, 2003
The world of wireless communications is changing very rapidly since a few years. The introduction of digital data communication in combination with digital signal process ing has created the foundation for the development of many new wireless applications. High-quality digital wireless networks for voice communication with global and local coverage, like the GSM and DECT system, are only faint and early examples of the wide variety of wireless applications that will become available in the remainder of this decade. The new evolutions in wireless communications set new requirements for the trans ceivers (transmitter-receivers). Higher operating frequencies, a lower power consump tion and a very high degree of integration, are new specifications which ask for design approaches quite different from the classical RF design techniques. The integrata bility and power consumption reduction of the digital part will further improve with the continued downscaling of technologies. This is however completely different for the analog transceiver front-end, the part which performs the interfacing between the antenna and the digital signal processing. The analog front-end's integratability and power consumption are closely related to the physical limitations of the transceiver topology and not so much to the scaling of the used technology. Chapter 2 gives a detailed study of the level of integration in current transceiver realization and analyzes their limitations. In chapter 3 of this book the complex signal technique for the analysis and synthesis of multi-path receiver and transmitter topologies is introduced. Erscheinungsdatum: 01.12.2010

Lake Veluwe, a Macrophyte-dominated System under Eutrophication Stress W. van Vierssen, M. J. M. Hootsmans (auth.), Wim van Vierssen, Michiel Hootsmans, Jan Vermaat (eds.) Springer Netherlands : Imprint : Springer, Geobotany 21, 1, 1994
The structure and functioning of eutrophicated aquatic ecosystems has received considerable attention from limnologists as well as water managers in recent years. Stress has often been on pelagic food webs of deeper lakes whilst littoral systems or shallower lakes have been less thoroughly investigated. Since Dutch aquatic systems are shallow, as a rule, they form a notable exception. But here, too, the orientation was often on pelagic food webs. The present study has a clearly different scope in that it takes the water plant as prime perspective. The editors consider water plants to be the key component in shallow aquatic ecosystems. They have compiled work on one water plant species, __Potamogeton pectinatus__ L., and from one lake, Lake Veluwe, as a typical case, and set out to explain the fluctuations in abundance of this water plant as influenced by eutrophication. A working hypothesis on the mechanism responsible for water plant decline during eutrophication was adopted and tested in a combination of field and laboratory work. A simulation model, SAGAI, for the water plant __P.pectinatus__ was developed and proved to fit independent data very well. The work started out as a joint effort of a single project team in the Department of Nature Conservation of Wageningen Agricultural University, but the present volume has benefited considerably from the inputs of several invited colleagues, as the list of contributors witnesses. The editors have made an invaluable contribution to the understanding of shallow aquatic ecosystems and to their scientifically based and sustainable management.

nexusstc/Design and Implementation of Fully-Integrated Inductive DC-DC Converters in Standard CMOS/2cda7edb34948d92846c20f15727089e.pdf
Design and Implementation of FullyIntegrated Inductive DCDC Converters in Standard CMOS Analog Circuits and Signal Processing Mike Wens, Michiel Steyaert (auth.) Springer Netherlands, Analog Circuits and Signal Processing, Analog Circuits and Signal Processing, 1, 2011
Technological progress in the semiconductor industry has led to a revolution towards new advanced, miniaturized, intelligent, battery-operated and wireless electronic applications. The required supply voltage(s) of these applications seldom matches the varying battery voltage, due to technological reasons. Therefore, efficient voltage converters are crucial to bridge this voltage gap, without compromising the battery’s autonomy as do linear voltage converters. In addition, both space and cost constraints form a strong incentive towards fully-integrated CMOS switched-mode DC-DC converters, effectively eliminating the need for large and expensive off-chip passives (inductors and capacitors). To achieve this goal Fully-Integrated Inductive DC-DC Converters in Standard CMOS provides the following assets: * A firm but comprehensive theoretical base on switched-mode DC-DC converters, giving the designer the crucial information for understanding the operating principles and fundamental limitations of different types of DC-DC converters, including linear converters, charge-pump converters and inductive converters. * An overview and comparison of different types of inductive DC-DC converters and their mutual comparison towards monolithic integration provides a versatile knowledge base to match witch the constraints of the converter to be designed. * An accurate and fast model for fully-integrated inductive DC-DC converters is discussed, taking into account all the significant losses in CMOS technologies. This model allows very accurate prediction of the steady-state parameters, including the efficiency. Furthermore, it allows a fast convergence towards the optimal design values, despite the multi-dimensional design-space. * High-speed control schemes for controlling the output voltage are explained intuitively and from a practical point of view. In addition three new control concepts: COOT, SCOOT and F2SCOOT are revealed. Many concrete schematics are provided and explained, which are also used in the various chip realizations. As such, this hands-on approach provides the “feeling” for control system design for fully-integrated DC-DC converters to the designer. * The book is concluded with seven practical proof-of-concept chip realizations of fully-integrated DC-DC converters, thereby using both bondwire and metal-track inductors. Many practical issues, such as chip lay-out and measurement setups, are discussed, providing the designer even more to-the-point practical information on the subject. Fully-Integrated Inductive DC-DC Converters in Standard CMOS is an essential work for research and design engineers that are confronted with fully- and/or highly-integrated DC-DC converters. The approach in this book ranges from a firm theoretical base to understand the trade-offs, towards a highly practical and realistic mindset.

nexusstc/CMOS Fractional-N Synthesizers: Design for High Spectral Purity and Monolithic Integration/ecad71728a04652926edfb663cf0709f.pdf
CMOS Fractional-N Synthesizers: Design for High Spectral Purity and Monolithic Integration (The Springer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science (724)) Bram De Muer, Michiel Steyaert, Bram de Muer Springer, The Springer International Series in Engineering and Computer Science, 2003, 2003
CMOS Fractional-N Synthesizers starts with a comprehensive introduction to general frequency synthesis. Different architectures and synthesizer building blocks are discussed with their relative importance on synthesizer specifications. The process of synthesizer specification derivation is illustrated with the DCS-1800 standard as a general test case. The book tackles the design of fractional-N synthesizers in CMOS on circuit level as well as system level. The circuit level focuses on high-speed prescaler design up to 12 GHz in CMOS and on fully integrated, low-phase-noise LC-VCO design. High-Q inductor integration and simulation in CMOS is elaborated and flicker noise minimization techniques are presented, ranging from bias point choice to noise filtering techniques. On a higher level, a systematic design strategy has been developed that trades off all noise contributions and fast dynamics for integrated capacitance (area). Moreover, a theoretical DeltaSigma phase noise analysis is presented, extended with a fast non-linear analysis method to accurately predict the influence of PLL non-linearities on the spectral purity of the DeltaSigma fractional-N frequency synthesizers.

This tenth volume of "Analog Circuit Design" concentrates on 3 topics: Scalable Analog Circuits, High-Speed D/A Converters, and RF Power Amplifiers. Each topic is covered by 6 papers, written by international recognized experts on that topic. These papers have a tutorial nature aimed at improving the design of analog circuits. The book is divided into three parts: Part I, Scalable Analog Circuit Design describes in 6 papers issues of: scalable high-speed design, scalable high-resolution mixed-mode ADC and OpAmp design, scalable high-voltage design for XDSL, scalability of wire-line front ends, reusable IP analog design, and porting CAD analog design. Part II, High-Speed D/A Converters describes in 6 papers issues of: Introduction to high-speed D/A converter design, retargetable 12-bit 200-MHz CMOS current steering design, high-speed CMOS D/A converters for upstream cable applications, static and dynamic performance limitations, the linearity challenge of D/A converters for communications, and a 400-MHz, 10-bit charge-domain CMOS D/A converter for low-spurious frequency synthesis. Part III, RF Power Amplifiers describes in 6 papers issues of: system aspects, overview and trade-offs, linear transmitter architectures, GaAs microwave SSPAs, Monolithic transformer-coupling in Si-bipolar, and RF power amplifier design in CMOS. "Analog Circuit Design" is an essential reference source for analog design engineers and researchers wishing to keep abreast with the latest developments in the field. The tutorial coverage also makes it suitable for use in an advance design course.

This book is a warning. It aims to warn policy-makers, industry, academia, civil society organisations, the media and the public about the threats and vulnerabilities facing our privacy, identity, trust, security and inclusion in the rapidly approaching world of ambient intelligence (AmI). In the near future, every manufactured product our clothes, money, appliances, the paint on our walls, the carpets on our floors, our cars, everything will be embedded with intelligence, networks of tiny sensors and actuators, which some have termed smart dust. The AmI world is not far off. We already have surveillance systems, biometrics, personal communicators, machine learning and more. AmI will provide personalised services and know more about us on a scale dwarfing anything hitherto available. In the AmI vision, ubiquitous computing, communications and interfaces converge and adapt to the user. AmI promises greater user-friendliness in an environment capable of recognising and responding to the presence of different individuals in a seamless, unobtrusive and often invisible way. While most stakeholders paint the promise of AmI in sunny colours, there is a dark side to AmI. This book aims to illustrate the threats and vulnerabilities by means of four dark scenarios. The authors set out a structured methodology for analysing the four scenarios, and then identify safeguards to counter the foreseen threats and vulnerabilities. They make recommendations to policy-makers and other stakeholders about what they can do to maximise the benefits from ambient intelligence and minimise the negative consequences.
