Although programming in memory-restricted environments is never easy, this holds especially true for digital signal processing (DSP). The data-rich, computation-intensive nature of DSP makes memory management a chief and challenging concern for designers. Memory Management for Synthesis of DSP Software focuses on minimizing memory requirements during the synthesis of DSP software from dataflow representations. Dataflow representations are used in many popular DSP design tools, and the methods of this book can be applied in that context, as well as other contexts where dataflow is used.This book systematically reviews research conducted by the authors on memory minimization techniques for compiling synchronous dataflow (SDF) specifications. Beginning with an overview of the foundations of software synthesis techniques from SDF descriptions, it examines aggressive buffer-sharing techniques that take advantage of specific and quantifiable tradeoffs between code size and buffer size to achieve high levels of buffer memory optimization.The authors outline coarse-level strategies using lifetime analysis and dynamic storage allocation (DSA) for efficient buffer sharing as one approach and demonstrate the role of the CBP (consumed-before-produced) parameter at a finer level using a merging framework for buffer sharing. They present two powerful algorithms for combining these sharing techniques and then introduce techniques that are not restricted to the single appearance scheduling space of the other techniques.Extensively illustrated to clarify the mathematical concepts, Memory Management for Synthesis of DSP Software presents a comprehensive survey of state-of-the-art research in DSP software synthesis.

The objective of the book is to provide an awareness of the considerable advances being made by Japane- se scientists on the general area of information technology and in the so-called Fifth Generation Computer Systems. In the first chapter, Watanabe of the NEC Corporation, descri- bes advanced architecture and technology of supercomputing systems. This theme is followed by Nakamura of Tohoku Uni- versity in the next chapter. Another type of supercomputer for vector processing, the FACOM VP 2000 Series is then des- cribed by Uchida ofFujitsu Ltd in Chapter 3. Expert systems are presented in the next two chapters by Ue- no and Oomari of Tokyo Denki University and by Koseki and Goto of the NEC Corporation. Our perspective on it lies in the present, and is subject to continual change. These changes, made in the light of our new knowledge and new experience, call for fresh evaluations and constant reconsideration. It is now one hundred fifty years since the death of Immanuel Kant, and this, the third volume of Tulane Studies in Philosophy is dedicated to the commemoration of the event. The diversity of the contributions to the volume serve as one indication of Kant's persistent importance in philoso phy. Third, it defines an ontology generation method that transforms the learning outcome to the Ontology Graph format for machine processing and also can be visualized for human validation. Fourth, it defines different ontological operations (such as similarity measurement and text classification) that can be carried out with the use of generated Ontology Graphs. The final goal of the KnowledgeSeeker system framework is that it can improve the traditional information system with higher efficiency. In particular, it can increase the accuracy of a text classification system, and also enhance the search intelligence in a search engine. The Knowledge Seeker is a useful system to develop various intelligent applications such as ontology-based search engine, ontology-based text classification system, ontological agent system, and semantic web system etc. The Knowledge Seeker contains four different ontological components. First, it defines the knowledge representation model ¡V Ontology Graph. Second, an ontology learning process that based on chi-square statistics is proposed for automatic learning an Ontology Graph from texts for different domains. Third, it defines an ontology generation method that transforms the learning outcome to the Ontology Graph format for machine processing and also can be visualized for human validation. Fourth, it defines different ontological operations (such as similarity measurement and text classification) that can be carried out with the use of generated Ontology Graphs. The final goal of the KnowledgeSeeker system framework is that it can improve the traditional information system with higher efficiency. In particular, it can increase the accuracy of a text classification system, and also enhance the search intelligence in a search engine. Welcome to the Second International Conference on Mobile Data Management (MDM2001). The conference serves as a forum for the exchange of technical ideas and research results in the areas of mobility and database management. This year, we have a very exciting program for MDM2001. Many quality papers were submitted to the conference. All of the submitted papers were - viewed by at least three PC members. Due to the limitations of the program schedule as well as the desire to organize the conference using a single track format, we selected only 18 papers for full presentation at the conference. As a result many excellent papers could not be accepted. The papers chosen for presentation span a large range of topics, from n- work protocol issues up to the semantics of mobile applications. The common theme of all these papers is their recognition of the central role played by data managementtechniques in the developmentof the emerging worldof mobile and wireless applications. We have loosely organized these papers into six areas: 1. DATA MANAGEMENT ARCHITECTURES, 2. CONTENT DELIVERY, 3. DATA BROADCASTING, 4. CACHING AND HOARDING, 5. COPING WITH MOVEMENT, 6. NETWORKS AND SYSTEMS ISSUES In addition to the researchtrack, we havesought to broaden the scope of the conference with an industrial session as well as poster presentations.
