Remixing the Classroom: Toward an Open Philosophy of Music Education (Counterpoints: Music and Education) Randall Everett Allsup; hoopla digital Indiana University Press : Made available through hoopla, Open Road Integrated Media, Inc., Bloomington, 2016
<P>In a delightfully self-conscious philosophical "mash-up," Randall Everett Allsup provides alternatives for the traditional master-apprentice teaching model that has characterized music education. By providing examples across the arts and humanities, Allsup promotes a vision of education that is open, changing, and adventurous at heart. He contends that the imperative of growth at the core of all teaching and learning relationships is made richer, though less certain, when it is fused with a student's self-initiated quest. In this way, the formal study of music turns from an education in teacher-directed craft and moves into much larger and more complicated fields of exploration. Through vivid stories and evocative prose, Randall Everett Allsup advocates for an open, quest-driven teaching model that has repercussions for music education and the humanities more generally.</P>

nexusstc/Threads of Empire: Loyalty and Tsarist Authority in Bashkiria, 1552–1917/007029d8ad76d3dca182da5344f970a5.pdf
Threads of Empire : Loyalty and Tsarist Authority in Bashkiria, 1552–1917 Charles R. Steinwedel Indiana University Press : Made available through hoopla, Open Road Integrated Media, Inc., [N.p.], 2016
Threads of Empire examines how Russia's imperial officials and intellectual elites made and maintained their authority among the changing intellectual and political currents in Eurasia from the mid-16th century to the revolution of 1917. The book focuses on a region 750 miles east of Moscow known as Bashkiria. The region was split nearly evenly between Russian and Turkic language speakers, both nomads and farmers. Ufa province at Bashkiria's core had the largest Muslim population of any province in the empire. The empire's leading Muslim official, the mufti, was based there, but the region also hosted a Russian Orthodox bishop. Bashkirs and peasants had different legal status, and powerful Russian Orthodox and Muslim nobles dominated the peasant estate. By the 20th century, industrial mining and rail commerce gave rise to a class structure of workers and managers. Bashkiria thus presents a fascinating case study of empire in all its complexities and of how the tsarist empire's ideology and categories of rule changed over time.

The Decoding the Disciplines Paradigm: Seven Steps to Increased Student Learning (Scholarship of Teaching and Learning) David Pace; hoopla digital Indiana University Press : Made available through hoopla, Indiana University Press, Bloomington, 2017
1 online resource (xvi, 157 pages) Teaching and learning in a college setting has never been more challenging. How can instructors reach out to their students and fully engage them in the conversation' Applicable to multiple disciplines, the Decoding the Disciplines Paradigm offers a radically new model for helping students respond to the challenges of college and provides a framework for understanding why students find academic life so arduous. Teachers can help their pupils overcome obstacles by identifying bottlenecks to learning and systematically exploring the steps needed to overcome these obstacles. Often, experts find it difficult to define the mental operations necessary to master their discipline because they have become so automatic that they are invisible. However, once these mental operations have been made explicit, the teacher can model them for students, create opportunities for practice and feedback, manage additional emotional obstacles, assess results, and share what has been learned with others Includes bibliographical references and index Finding the bottleneck -- Decoding the disciplinary unconscious -- Modeling operations -- Practice and feedback -- Motivation and emotional bottlenecks -- Assessment -- Sharing -- The future of decoding Online resource; title from digital title page (viewed on March 27, 2017)

<P>Negative theology is the attempt to describe God by speaking in terms of what God is not. Historical affinities between Jewish modernity and negative theology indicate new directions for thematizing the modern Jewish experience. Questions such as, What are the limits of Jewish modernity in terms of negativity? Has this creative tradition exhausted itself? and How might Jewish thought go forward? anchor these original essays. Taken together they explore the roots and legacies of negative theology in Jewish thought, examine the viability and limits of theorizing the modern Jewish experience as negative theology, and offer a fresh perspective from which to approach Jewish intellectual history.</P>

nexusstc/Material Vernaculars: Objects, Images, and Their Social Worlds/2eb171fdf4c44c9e431aa2e8bf3519af.epub
Material Vernaculars : Objects, Images, and Their Social Worlds Jason Baird Jackson; Gabrielle Anna Berlinger; Danille Christensen; Michael P. Jordan; Jon Kay; Jim Cooley; Daniel C. Swan Indiana University Press : Made available through hoopla, Open Road Integrated Media, Inc., Bloomington, 2016
The role of objects and images in everyday life are illuminated incisively in Material Vernaculars , which combines historical, ethnographic, and object-based methods across a diverse range of material and visual cultural forms. The contributors to this volume offer revealing insights into the significance of such practices as scrapbooking, folk art produced by the elderly, the wedding coat in Osage ceremonial exchanges, temporary huts built during the Jewish festival of Sukkot, and Kiowa women's traditional roles in raiding and warfare. While emphasizing local vernacular culture, the contributors point to the ways that culture is put to social ends within larger social networks and within the stream of history. While attending to the material world, these case studies explicate the manner in which the tangible and intangible, the material and the meaningful, are constantly entwined and co-constituted.

The Katangese gendarmes and war in Central Africa : fighting their way home erik kennes, Miles Larmer Indiana University Press : Made available through hoopla, 2018
A history of the 1960s unrecognized state’s army and their role in Central Africa’s political and military conflicts. Erik Kennes and Miles Larmer provide a history of the Katangese gendarmes and their largely undocumented role in many of the most important political and military conflicts in Central Africa. Katanga, located in today’s Democratic Republic of Congo, seceded in 1960 as Congo achieved independence, and the gendarmes fought as the unrecognized state’s army during the Congo crisis. Kennes and Larmer explain how the ex-gendarmes, then exiled in Angola, struggled to maintain their national identity and return “home.” They take readers through the complex history of the Katangese and their engagement in regional conflicts and Africa’s Cold War. Kennes and Larmer show how the paths not taken at Africa’s independence persist in contemporary political and military movements and bring new understandings to the challenges that personal and collective identities pose to the relationship between African nation-states and their citizens and subjects. “A fascinating story which is tied to the colonial development of Katanga province, cold war politics in Central Africa, the crisis of the postcolonial state in the Congo, and the interregional politics in the Great Lakes area.” —Georges Nzongola-Ntalaja, University of North Carolina “A major contribution to our understanding of postcolonial politics in Africa more broadly and sheds light on the survival of militias over time and forms of subnationalism emerging from regional consciousness.” —M. Crawford Young, University of Wisconsin, Madison

What My Last Man Did (Blue Light Books) andrea lewis Indiana University Press : Made available through hoopla, 2019
Short stories about the history of an American family: "As memorable and winning a pair of sisters as I have come across in contemporary literature." —Pam Houston, author of Deep Creek How are our lives shaped by the difficult choices of our parents and even grandparents? How will our own choices direct the future for our children? Following generations of one family across nearly a century, each of Andrea Lewis's intertwined short stories evokes an intense sense of place and time, from New Orleans in 1895 to Grand Isle, Louisiana, during the hurricane of 1901 and on to London during the Olympic Games of 1948. The people in these ten vivid, engaging tales face tragedy and real-world catastrophic events—war, hurricanes, the Great Depression, racial tension—in their pursuit of love, family, and belonging. Each character struggles to discover and preserve his or her identity and dreams while grappling with the expectations of family and culture and trying to cope with loss. Some succeed, some compromise, and some fail—but all have a traceable impact on a story to come.

Happily Ever After : The Romance Story in Popular Culture Catherine M Roach; hoopla digital Indiana University Press : Made available through hoopla, Indiana University Press, Bloomington, 2016
<P>"Find your one true love and live happily ever after." The trials of love and desire provide perennial story material, from the Biblical Song of Songs to Disney's princesses, but perhaps most provocatively in the romance novel, a genre known for tales of fantasy and desire, sex and pleasure. Hailed on the one hand for its women-centered stories that can be sexually liberating, and criticized on the other for its emphasis on male/female coupling and mythical happy endings, romance fiction is a multi-million dollar publishing phenomenon, creating national and international societies of enthusiasts, practitioners, and scholars. Catherine M. Roach, alongside her romance-writer alter-ego, Catherine LaRoche, guides the reader deep into Romancelandia where the smart and the witty combine with the sexy and seductive to explore why this genre has such a grip on readers and what we can learn from the romance novel about the nature of happiness, love, sex, and desire in American popular culture.</P>

Gardening in the Lower Midwest : A Practical Guide for the New Zones 5 and 6 Diane Heilenman; hoopla digital Indiana University Press : Made available through hoopla, Open Road Integrated Media, Inc., Bloomington, IN, 1994
“A common-sense handbook for gardeners” who live in the plant hardiness zones of the Midwest with extreme temperature swings ( HortScience ). Garden columnist Diane Heilenman helps novice and experienced gardeners cope in the difficult and trying climate of the areas she labels Zombie Zones, where wild temperature swings are normal—“specifically, upper Kentucky; all of Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois; lower Iowa; all of Missouri; and the lower parts of Wisconsin and Michigan” ( Library Journal ). She shows how to create gardens appropriate for the region and how to select flowers, plants, trees, and shrubs that will be happy—and in turn make us happy. A gifted thinker who grapples with what it means to garden in our time, Heilenman has produced a book that “will help slacken the stress level that gardening was never meant to bring” ( HortScience ). “[Heilenman] gets to the heart, the soul and the humor shared by all in the gardening world . . . both a practical reference and an inspiration.”— The Herald-Times (Bloomington, IN) “Presents basic gardening techniques and personal plant preferences in a breezy writing style.”— Library Journal

Dancing in Dreamtime (Break Away Book Club Edition) Scott Russell Sanders Indiana University Press : Made available through hoopla, Open Road Integrated Media, Inc., Bloomington and Indianapolis, 2016
Fans today may be surprised to learn Scott Russell Sanders was previously one of the brightest science-fiction newcomers of the 1980s. In Dancing in Dreamtime, he returns to his roots, exploring both inner and outer space in a speculative collection of short stories. At a time when humankind faces unprecedented, global-scale challenges from climate change, loss of biodiversity, dwindling vital resources, and widespread wars, this collection of planetary tales will strike a poignant chord with the reader. Sanders has created worlds where death tolls rise due to dream deprivation, where animals only exist in mechanical form, and where poisoned air forces people to live in biodomes. Never before has Sanders's writing been so relevant and never before have the lessons in these stories been so important.

All Things Are Possible: The Healing and Charismatic Revivals in Modern America (Encounters) Harrell, David Edwin, Jr Indiana University Press : Made available through hoopla, 1979 Jan
“The first book to tell the story of the enterprisers who have personal followings . . . a missing link in the chain of American religious movements.”—Martin E. Marty, author of October 31, 1517: Martin Luther and the Day that Changed the World Written by a Professor Emeritus at Auburn University, this is the first objective history of the great revivals that swept the country after World War II. It tells the story of the victories and defeats of such giants of the revival as William Branham, Oral Roberts, Jack Coe, T. L. Osborn, and A. A. Allen. It also tells of the powerful evangelists who carried on the revival, including Robert Schambach and Morris Cerullo. Those who lived through the great revivals of the 1950s and 1960s will be thrilled to read about those exciting days, and those interested in the religious history of the United States need to read this book to see what has led us up to this present moment in time. “Harrell has obviously attended countless rallies, read sheafs of literature, and personally interviewed many of the principals. He . . . tell[s] the story in a largely biographical format. This makes for lively reading.”—The New York Times Book Review “A book about healing revivalists that takes them seriously and treats them fairly.”—Journal of Southern History “Will be a definitive work for some years to come.”—Reviews in American History “Will attract readers interested in the reasons behind the various fat and lean periods among revivalists.”—Publishers Weekly “Harrell’s book will doubtless be the definitive work on the subject for a long while—who else will wade through Healing Waters and Miracle Magazine with such fastidious care?”—Kirkus ReviewsISBN : 9780253013422

Making the Nonprofit Sector in the United States: A Reader (Philanthropic Studie) edited with introductions by David C. Hammack Indiana University Press : Made available through hoopla, Indiana University Press, Bloomington, Ind, 1998
<P>"It is a delight to seen an anthology on nonprofit history done so well."—Barry Karl, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University</P><P>"This is a volume that everyone concerned about nonprofits—scholar, practitioner, and citizen—will find useful and illuminating."—Peter Dobkin Hall, Program on Non-Profit Organizations<br/>Yale Divinity School</P><P>"A remarkable book."—Robert Putnam, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University</P><P>[One to come from John Simon, School of Law, Yale University by Jan. 13th and others are being solicited.] </P><P>Unique among nations, America conducts almost all of its formally organized religious activity, and many cultural, arts, human service, educational, and research activities through private nonprofit organizations. Though partially funded by government, as well as by fees and donations, American nonprofits have pursued their missions with considerable independence. Many have amassed remarkable resources and acquired some of the most impressive hospital, university, performing arts, and museum facilities in the world. While some have amassed large endowments, many that surpass one billion dollars, there are also hundreds of thousands of small nonprofits, most with no tangible resources at all.<br/> <br/>How did the United States come to rely so heavily on nonprofits? Why has it continued to do so? What purposes do Americans seek to advance through nonprofits? How have Americans sought to control them? How have nonprofits been effected by the growth of government in the twentieth century? These questions suggest the complexity of the history of nonprofits in the United States. To help explore that history, this reader presents some of the classic documents in the development of the nonprofit sector along with important interpretations by recent scholars. The selections can be considered a representative part of a single extended conversation by the men and women who have taken part in the effort to define America and the American dream, even as they shaped what we now call the nonprofit sector. The statements by participants in the growth and development of the nonprofit sector are accompanied by essays written by historians and social scientists that provide concise surveys of important issues and periods. The essays give voice to those whose contributions to the American debate about voluntary associations and private institutions would otherwise be difficult to find or comprehend.</P><P>The selections can be considered a representative part of a single extended conversation by the men and women who have taken part in the effort to define America and the American dream, even as they shaped what we now call the nonprofit sector. Shifting Sands : The Restoration of the Calumet Area Kenneth J Schoon; hoopla digital Indiana University Press : Made available through hoopla, Illustrated, FR, 2016
<P>The location of one of the most diverse national parks in the United States, Northwest Indiana's Calumet area is home to what was at one time widely known as the most polluted river in the entire country. Calumet's advantageous location at the southern tip of Lake Michigan encouraged broadscale conversion of Indiana wilderness into an industrial base that once included the world's largest steel mill, largest cement works, and largest oil refinery. Thousands of tons of hazardous waste were dumped in and around the rivers with no thought for how it would affect the region's water, land, and air. However, a remarkable change of attitude has resulted in the rejuvenation of an area once rich in natural diversity and the creation of a National Park that brings in more than two million visitors a year, contains beautiful greenways and blueways, and provides safe recreation for nearby residents. A community-wide effort, the cleanup of this area is nothing short of remarkable. In this Indiana bicentennial book, Ken Schoon introduces the reader to the Calumet area's unique history and the residents who banded together to save it.</P>

Hallow This Ground (Break Away Books) Colin Rafferty Break Away Book Club Edition, Indiana University Press, Bloomington, 2015
Beginning outside the boarded-up windows of Columbine High School and ending almost twelve years later on the fields of Shiloh National Military Park, Hallow This Ground revolves around monuments and memorials—physical structures that mark the intersection of time and place. In the ways they invite us to interact with them, these sites teach us to recognize our ties to the past. Colin Rafferty explores places as familiar as his hometown of Kansas City and as alien as the concentration camps of Poland in an attempt to understand not only our common histories, but also his own past, present, and future. Rafferty blends the travel essay with the lyric, the memoir with the analytic, in this meditation on the ways personal histories intersect with History, and how those intersections affect the way we understand and interact with Place.

Germans on the Kenyan Coast : Land, Charity, and Romance Nina Berman Indiana University Press : Made available through hoopla, Open Road Integrated Media, Inc., Bloomington, 2017
Diani, a coastal town on the Indian Ocean, is significantly defined by a large European presence that has spurred economic development and is also supported by close relationships between Kenyans and European immigrants and tourists. Nina Berman looks carefully at the repercussions that these economic and social interactions have brought to life on the Kenyan coast. She explores what happens when poorer and less powerful members of a community are forced to give way to profit-based real estate development, what it means when most of Diani s schools and water resources are supplied by funds from immigrants, and what the impact of mixed marriages is on notions of kinship and belonging as well as the economy. This unique story about a small Kenyan town also recounts a wider tale of opportunity, oppression, resilience, exploitation, domination, and accommodation in a world of economic, political, and social change."

Turtles as Hopeful Monsters: Origins and Evolution (Life of the Past) Olivier Rieppel Indiana University Press : Made available through hoopla, Illustrated, 2017
<P>Where do turtles hail from? Why and how did they acquire shells? These questions have spurred heated debate and intense research for more than two hundred years. Brilliantly weaving evidence from the latest paleontological discoveries with an accessible, incisive look at different theories of biological evolution and their proponents, Turtles as Hopeful Monsters tells the fascinating evolutionary story of the shelled reptiles. Paleontologist Olivier Rieppel traces the evolution of turtles from over 220 million years ago, examining closely the relationship of turtles to other reptiles and charting the development of the shell. Turtle issues fuel a debate between proponents of gradual evolutionary change and authors favoring change through bursts and leaps of macromutation. The first book-length popular history of its type, this indispensable resource is an engaging read for all those fascinated by this ubiquitous and uniquely shaped reptile.</P>

<<A>> Jewish guide in the Holy Land how Christian pilgrims made me Israeli Jackie Feldman Indiana University Press : Made available through hoopla, Indiana University Press, Bloomington, IN, 2016
<P>For many Evangelical Christians, a trip to the Holy Land is an integral part of practicing their faith. Arriving in groups, most of these pilgrims are guided by Jewish Israeli tour guides. For more than three decades, Jackie Feldman—born into an Orthodox Jewish family in New York, now an Israeli citizen, scholar, and licensed guide—has been leading tours, interpreting Biblical landscapes, and fielding questions about religion and current politics. In this book, he draws on pilgrimage and tourism studies, his own experiences, and interviews with other guides, Palestinian drivers and travel agents, and Christian pastors to examine the complex interactions through which guides and tourists "co-produce" the Bible Land. He uncovers the implicit politics of travel brochures and religious souvenirs. Feldman asks what it means when Jewish-Israeli guides get caught up in their own performances or participate in Christian rituals, and reflects on how his interactions with Christian tourists have changed his understanding of himself and his views of religion.</P>

nexusstc/Popobawa: Tanzanian Talk, Global Misreadings/ac285f29daaf5983485c350a11b29302.epub
Popobawa : Tanzanian Talk, Global Misreadings Katrina Daly Thompson Indiana University Press : Made available through hoopla, Open Road Integrated Media, Inc., Bloomington and Indianapolis, 2017
"Bravely takes on . . . not the legendary shapeshifting creature spoken about sporadically on the Swahili coast of Tanzania, but rather popobawa discourse." — The Journal of Modern African Studies Since the 1960s, people on the islands off the coast of Tanzania have talked about being attacked by a mysterious creature called Popobawa, a shapeshifter often described as having an enormous penis. Popobawa's recurring attacks have become a popular subject for stories, conversation, gossip, and humor that has spread far beyond East Africa. Katrina Daly Thompson shows that talk about Popobawa becomes a tool that Swahili speakers use for various creative purposes such as subverting gender segregation, advertising homosexuality, or discussing female sexuality. By situating Popobawa discourse within the social and cultural world of the Swahili Coast as well as the wider world of global popular culture, Thompson demonstrates that uses of this legend are more diverse and complex than previously thought and provides insight into how women and men communicate in a place where taboo, prohibition, and restraint remain powerful cultural forces. "While Popobawa surely belong to one of the most interesting African legends, Katrina Daly Thompson, instead of asking where the story originated, asks about how people talk about this trickster and what these conversations really mean." —Claudia Boehme, University of Trier "A well-researched and well-documented addition to the body of knowledge on local legends and their global manifestations." — Journal of Folklore Research "Thompson's movement between local and global discourses demonstrates the importance of a phenomenon that could otherwise be viewed as exotic ethnographic trivia, while her theoretical orientation makes the text as relevant to linguistic anthropologists as to African studies scholars." — African Studies Review

**"A fascinating mix of fact, history, self-confession, self-accusation, and self-forgiveness—a diary of both emotional relationships and travel." —__Pasatiempo__**This classic account of self-discovery and railroad life describes Linda Grant Niemann's travels as an itinerant brakeman on the Southern Pacific. combines travelogue, Wild West adventure, sexual memoir, and closely observed ethnography. A Berkeley Ph.D., Niemann turned her back on academia and set out to master the craft of railroad brakeman, beginning a journey of sexual and subcultural exploration and traveling down a path toward recovery from alcoholism. In honest, clean prose, Niemann treks off the beaten path and into the forgotten places along the rail lines, finding true American characters with colorful pasts—and her true self as well.**"Ma[kes] the railroad experience come alive with all its grit, danger, romance, and general outrageousness . . . Possibly the finest book I've ever read about the actual experience of working on the railroad." —Trains Magazine****"Niemann has a taut, lyrically restrained but vividly descriptive style, with an observational vigilance befitting a brakeman's mindset, and her narrative clips along like a boxcar rolling through the yard." —__Bloom Magazine__****"A remarkable adventure tale, the occupational odyssey of the Ph.D. in literature who immerses herself in blue-collar America." —__Library Journal__**

Pink 2.0 : Encoding Queer Cinema on the Internet Noah A. Tsika Indiana University Press : Made available through hoopla, Open Road Integrated Media, Inc., Bloomington, 2016
"In an era where digital media converges with new technologies that allow for cropping, remixing, extracting, and pirating, a second life for traditional media appears via the internet and emerging platforms. Pink 2.0 examines the mechanisms through which the internet and associated technologies both produce and limit the intelligibility of contemporary queer cinema. Challenging conventional conceptions of the internet as an exceptionally queer medium, Noah A. Tsika explores the constraints that publishers, advertisers, and content farms place on queer cinema as a category of production, distribution, and reception. He shows how the commercial internet is increasingly characterized by the algorithmic reduction of diverse queer films to the dimensions of a highly valued white, middle-class gay masculinity--a phenomenon that he terms "Pink 2.0." Excavating a rich set of online materials through the practice of media archaeology, he demonstrates how the internet's early and intense associations with gay male consumers (and vice versa) have not only survived the medium's dramatic global expansion but have also shaped a series of strategies for producing and consuming queer cinema. Identifying alternatives to such corporate and technological constraints, Tsika uncovers the vibrant lives of queer cinema in the complex, contentious, and libidinous pockets of the internet where resistant forms of queer fandom thrive" -- From the publisher.

Katanga, located in today's Democratic Republic of Congo, seceded in 1960 as Congo achieved independence and the gendarmes fought as the unrecognized state's army during the Congo crisis. Kennes and Larmer explain how the ex-gendarmes, then exiled in Angola, struggled to maintain their national identity and return "home." They take readers through the complex history of the Katangese and their engagement in regional conflicts and Africa's Cold War. Kennes and Larmer show how the paths not taken at Africa's independence persist in contemporary political and military movements and bring new understandings to the challenges that personal and collective identities pose to the relationship between African nation-states and their citizens and subjects.

Remixing the Classroom: Toward an Open Philosophy of Music Education (Counterpoints: Music and Education) Randall Everett Allsup; hoopla digital Indiana University Press : Made available through hoopla, Counterpoints : music and education, Counterpoints (Bloomington, Ind.), Indiana, 2016

Boomer: Railroad Memoirs (Railroads Past and Present) Linda Grant Niemann; introduction by Leslie Marmon Silko Railroads Past and Present (Pa, Railroads past and present, Indiana University Press pbk. ed., Bloomington, Indiana, 2011
**"A fascinating mix of fact, history, self-confession, self-accusation, and self-forgiveness--a diary of both emotional relationships and travel." --__Pasatiempo__** This classic account of self-discovery and railroad life describes Linda Grant Niemann's travels as an itinerant brakeman on the Southern Pacific. __Boomer__ combines travelogue, Wild West adventure, sexual memoir, and closely observed ethnography. A Berkeley Ph.D., Niemann turned her back on academia and set out to master the craft of railroad brakeman, beginning a journey of sexual and subcultural exploration and traveling down a path toward recovery from alcoholism. In honest, clean prose, Niemann treks off the beaten path and into the forgotten places along the rail lines, finding true American characters with colorful pasts--and her true self as well. **"Ma[kes] the railroad experience come alive with all its grit, danger, romance, and general outrageousness . . . Possibly the finest book I've ever read about the actual experience of working on the railroad." --Trains Magazine****"Niemann has a taut, lyrically restrained but vividly descriptive style, with an observational vigilance befitting a brakeman's mindset, and her narrative clips along like a boxcar rolling through the yard." --__Bloom Magazine__****"A remarkable adventure tale, the occupational odyssey of the Ph.D. in literature who immerses herself in blue-collar America." --__Library Journal__**

Beyond Boundaries: Rethinking Music Circulation in Early Modern England (Music and the Early Modern Imagination) Linda Phyllis Austern Assoc; Candace Bailey; Amanda Eubanks Winkler Indiana University Press : Made available through hoopla, Music and the early modern imagination, Bloomington, Indiana, 2017
"English music studies often apply rigid classifications to musical materials, their uses, their consumers, and performers. The contributors to this volume argue that some performers and manuscripts from the early modern era defy conventional categorization as "amateur" or "professional," "native" or "foreign." These leading scholars explore the circulation of music and performers in early modern England, reconsidering previously held ideas about the boundaries between locations of musical performance and practice."--Page 4 de la couverture

Applicable To Multiple Disciplines, The Decoding The Disciplines Paradigm Offers A Radically New Model For Helping Students Respond To The Challenges Of College And Provides A Framework For Understanding Why Students Find Academic Life So Arduous. Gardening in the Lower Midwest : A Practical Guide for the New Zones 5 and 6 Diane Heilenman; hoopla digital Indiana University Press : Made available through hoopla, Encounters: Explorations in Folklore and Ethnomusicology, 1994
"A common-sense handbook for gardeners" who live in the plant hardiness zones of the Midwest with extreme temperature swings ( HortScience ). Garden columnist Diane Heilenman helps novice and experienced gardeners cope in the difficult and trying climate of the areas she labels Zombie Zones, where wild temperature swings are normal—"specifically, upper Kentucky; all of Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois; lower Iowa; all of Missouri; and the lower parts of Wisconsin and Michigan" ( Library Journal ). She shows how to create gardens appropriate for the region and how to select flowers, plants, trees, and shrubs that will be happy—and in turn make us happy. A gifted thinker who grapples with what it means to garden in our time, Heilenman has produced a book that "will help slacken the stress level that gardening was never meant to bring" ( HortScience ). "[Heilenman] gets to the heart, the soul and the humor shared by all in the gardening world . . . both a practical reference and an inspiration."— The Herald-Times (Bloomington, IN) "Presents basic gardening techniques and personal plant preferences in a breezy writing style."— Library Journal

Pioneers of the Hardwood : Indiana and the Birth of Professional Basketball Todd Gould Indiana University Press : Made available through hoopla, Open Road Integrated Media, Inc., Bloomington, 1998
As fire is to prairie or water to fish, so is basketball part of the natural environment in Indiana. Round ball, or Hoosier Hysteria is so much a part of the state's heritage that many people believe basketball was invented in Indiana. Naismith's game is a virtual religion in the state. While everyone knows about the growth of basketball in high schools and in college, the story of Indiana's role in the development of professional basketball has not been told before. It is a fascinating, passionate, lively story of men who loved the game and were willing to play for nickels, of raucous fans, local heroes, and love of the game. Growing out of an award-winning documentary, Pioneers of the Hardwood tells the story of the growth of professional basketball in Indiana in the good old barnstorming days. Gould covers the Indianapolis Em-Roes, the Fort Wayne Pistons (later the Detroit Pistons), the Indianapolis Kautskys, and the Indianapolis Olympians. He sets his story within the context of the times and also discusses some of the teams that the local heroes competed against, including the famous New York Celtics (the original Celtics) and the gifted Harlem Rens, the first all black professional team. The book is based on extensive research as well as revealing interviews with former players John Wooden, collegiate all-American Ralph Beard, Pat Malaska, Frank Baird, and others. Indiana teams were frequently "world champions." The Fort Wayne Pistons dominated professional basketball for a number of years. Pioneers of the Hardwood is an essential part of the story of the growth of professional basketball in the first half of this century. As Gould puts it, "Before stars such as Larry Bird or Oscar Robertson, before the high-priced basketball shoe advertisements, and before the success of the NBA, before the Indiana Pacers, the forefathers of professional basketball forged a remarkable legacy as unlikely and as magical as a last-second shot spells a championship. Under primitive conditions, these fabled sportsmen laid a hardwood foundation for others to follow." This is their story.

Africa Must Be Modern : A Manifesto Olúfẹ́mi Táíwò (Olufemi Taiwo) Indiana University Press : Made available through hoopla, Indiana University Press, Bloomington, Indiana, 2014
<P>In a forthright and uncompromising manner, Olúfémi Táíwò explores Africa's hostility toward modernity and how that hostility has impeded economic development and social and political transformation. What has to change for Africa to be able to respond to the challenges of modernity and globalization? Táíwò insists that Africa can renew itself only by fully engaging with democracy and capitalism and by mining its untapped intellectual resources. While many may not agree with Táíwò's positions, they will be unable to ignore what he says. This is a bold exhortation for Africa to come into the 21st century.</P>
