Ethnicity at Work Sandra Wallman (eds.) Macmillan Education UK, Studies in Ethnicity, First published, London, 1979
I am indebted to the contributors for allowing their separate efforts to appear in this collective form, for their generous response to my editorial demands and for their tolerance of the generalised interpretation which I have imposed on their material. Ultimate responsiblity for the volume is of course my own. It does not represent the views of the Social Science Research Council, nor does it necessarily reflect those of all members of the S.S.R.C. Research Unit in Ethnic Relations.

Identity at Work: Ethnicity, Food & Power in Malaysian Hospitality Industry Eric Olmedo (auth.) Springer-Verlag Singapur, 1. ed. 2015, Singapore, 2015
This book investigates the interface of ethnicity with occupation, empirically observed in luxury international hotels in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It employs the two main disciplines of anthropology and sociology in order to understand the root causes and meaning of ethnicity at work within the hospitality industry sector. More specifically, it observes social change in a multi-ethnic and non-secular society through an ethnographic study located in a micro organisation: the Grand Hotel. At the individual level, this research shows how identity shifts and transformation can be mediated through the consumption and manipulation of food at the workplace. In addition, it combines an ambitious theoretical discussion on the concept of ethnicity together with empirical data that highlights how ethnicity is lived on an everyday basis at a workplace manifesting the dynamics of cultural, religious and ethnic diversity. The book presents the quantitative and qualitative findings of two complementary surveys and pursues an interdisciplinary approach, as it integrates methodologies from the sociology of organisations with classic fieldwork methods borrowed from ethnology, while combining French and Anglo-Saxon schools of thoughts on questions of identity and ethnicity. The results of the cultural contact occurring in a westernised pocket of the global labour market {u2013} in which social practices derive from the headquarters located in a society where ethnicity is self-ascribed {u2013} with Malaysian social actors to whom ethnicity is assigned will be of particular interest for social scientists and general readers alike

Women and Work: Vol 6: Exploring Race, Ethnicity and Class (Women and Work: A Research and Policy Series) editors, Elizabeth Higginbotham, Mary Romero SAGE Publications, Incorporated, Women and Work: a Research and Policy Ser., 1, 1997
How race, ethnicity and social class shape the working lives, working conditions and wages of women is explored in this collection of original research articles. With the emphasis on women from non-white or working-class backgrounds, Women and Work assesses women's abilities to control their work environments, how they see themselves and their options in the work place. Throughout, the collection addresses such topics as the integration of work and family, women's vision of their own work and consciousness as employees, and women's resistance to exploitative and limiting work.

nexusstc/Working with Ethnicity, Race and Culture in Mental Health: A Handbook for Practitioners/c6ed41bac1f54b8b4690a1e85a476fbc.pdf
Working with Ethnicity, Race and Culture in Mental Health : A Handbook for Practitioners Hári Sewell Jessica Kingsley Publishers Ltd, 1, 2008
This is a book for practitioners essentially a self-training book but also one that could be used as a source of knowledge in a complex and controversial field. The author knows about the realities at the grass roots, how NHS mental health care is currently set up, what types of approach are practicable and what are not and more than all that he understands what busy practitioners may look for in a book called a handbook.' Extract from the Foreword by Dr Suman Fernando This book enables front line practitioners to understand why it is important to consider the specific needs of people from black and minority ethnic (BME) backgrounds in mental health settings. It offers practical guidance on how practitioners can take positive steps to improve the quality of their work and their relationships with BME service users, and ultimately how to improve their outcomes. By advocating the practice of recognizing the individuality of each service user, this book provides practitioners with the tools and information they need to work fairly and effectively. Case examples of organisations that have achieved a quality of delivery that is valued by BME people are included, along with exercises that help practitioners to make links between theory and their individual practice. It is invaluable reading for all those working on the front line in mental health.

Racism in Danish Welfare Work with Refugees : Troubled by Difference, Docility and Dignity Marta Padovan-Özdemir, Trine Øland Routledge, Taylor et Francis Group, Routledge Research in Race and Ethnicity, 42, 2022
"This book explores contemporary Danish relations of colonial complicity in welfare work with newly arrived refugees 1978-2016 as recursive histories that reveal new shapes and shades of racism. Focussing on super- and subordination in helping relations of postcoloniality, the book displays the durability of coloniality and the workings of raceless racism in welfare work with refugees. Its main contribution is the excavation of stock stories of colour-blindness, potentialising and compassion, which help welfare workers invest in burying that which keeps haunting welfare work with refugees, i.e., modern ghosts of difference, docility and dignity. The book dismantles the global myth of the Danish benevolent, universalistic welfare state and it is of interest to every scholar and student, who wants to make inquiries about Danish exceptionalism and the hidden interaction between past and present, the visible and invisible in Danish welfare work with refugees"-- Provided by publisher

Building a Healthy Multi-ethnic Church: Mandate, Commitments and Practices of a Diverse Congregation (Jossey-Bass Leadership Network Series) Mark DeYmaz; foreword by George Yancey Jossey-Bass; Jossey-Bass/John Wiley, Jossey-Bass Leadership Network Series, 1, 2007
This book makes a very important and challenging contribution to contemporary thinking about church life and health. If heaven is going to be filled with people of diverse ethnicities and languages, shouldn't we be practising for that now? Have most churches nowadays somehow forgotten the lessons learnt by the early church in the book of Acts about welcoming the Gentiles into their congregations? According to DeYmaz, a healthy multi-ethnic church has seven core commitments. These are: embrace dependence; take intentional steps; empower diverse leadership; develop cross-cultural relationships; pursue cross-cultural competence; promote a spirit of inclusion; and mobilise for impact. Many of the larger churches in Melbourne including Syndal Baptist Church have been heading down the multi-ethnic path for some years, with Chinese and other Asian-language congregations; however DeYmaz's preferred model involves fully integrated multi-lingual worship services, rather than separate services in separate languages. When a church makes a deliberate choice to be multi-ethnic, it is definitely not making the easiest available choice. It needs to be ready for plenty of conflict and intercultural misunderstanding. It won't necessarily be the fastest growing church in town, and it might scare away some people. But a multi-ethnic church does seem to be more reflective of God's plan for the church than a mono-ethnic church.

nexusstc/Class and Other Identities: Gender, Religion, and Ethnicity in the Writing of European Labour History/22ec7552a4d98b8b97af8b72249d5fc4.pdf
Class and Other Identities: Gender, Religion, and Ethnicity in the Writing of European Labour History (International Studies in Social History, 2) Lex Heerma van Voss; Marcel van der Linden; John Belchem Berghahn Books, Incorporated, International Studies in Social History Ser., 1, 2002
With the onset of a more conservative political climate in the 1980s, social and especially labour history saw a decline in the popularity that they had enjoyed throughout the 1960s and 1970s. This led to much debate on its future and function within the historical discipline as a whole. Some critics declared it dead altogether. Others have proposed a change of direction and a more or less exclusive focus on images and texts. The most constructive proposals have suggested that labour history in the past concentrated too much on class and that other identities of working people should be taken into account to a larger extent than they had been previously, such as gender, religion, and ethnicity. Although class as a social category is still as valid as it has been before, the questions now to be asked are to what extent non-class identities shape working people's lives and mentalities and how these are linked with the class system. In this volume some of the leading European historians of labour and the working classes address these questions. Two non-European scholars comment on their findings from an Indian, resp. American, point of view. The volume is rounded off by a most useful bibliography of recent studies in European labour history, class, gender, religion, and ethnicity.

Asylum seekers, social work and racism 2015 Shepard Masocha (auth.) Palgrave Macmillan UK Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan, Springer Nature, [Basingstoke], 2015
This book analyses social work through the concept of 'xenoracism' to challenge the outdated concepts of racism that still pervade social work. It illustrates how, through their discursive practices, social workers are able to counteract the dominant anti asylum seeking discourses. Asylum seeking continues to be a highly emotive and politically charged issue. This book analyses social work through the concept of 'xenoracism' to challenge the outdated concepts of racism that still pervade social work. Using discourse analysis, it explores how language is used to construct asylum seekers in specific ways within social workers' narratives. It illuminates how the deployment of specific linguistic resources legitimates these constructs by rendering them as reasonable and acceptable ways of viewing asylum seekers. Asylum Seekers, Social Work and Racism demonstrates how racist discourse and exclusionary tendencies can occur without reference to overt forms of racism that are based on biological categorisations. Significantly, Masocha illustrates how social workers can counteract these exclusionary tendencies through their discursive practices. In demonstrating the complexities and ever-shifting contours of exclusionary discourse, it will be of great interest for researchers, students and practitioners alike

Crossing the Ethnic Divide: The Multiethnic Church on a Mission (Aar Academy Series) Kathleen Garces-Foley IRL Press at Oxford University Press, An American Academy of Religion Book, 2007
While religious communities often stress the universal nature of their beliefs, it remains true that people choose to worship alongside those they identify with most easily. Multiethnic churches are rare in the United States, but as American attitudes toward diversity change, so too does the appeal of a church that offers diversity. Joining such a community, however, is uncomfortable-worshippers must literally cross the barriers of ethnic difference by entering the religious space of the ethnically "other." Through the story of one multiethnic congregation in Southern California, Kathleen Garces-Foley examines what it means to confront the challenges in forming a religious community across ethnic divisions and attracting a more varied membership.

Tell Me the Dream Again: Reflections on Family, Ethnicity, and the Sacred Work of Belonging Tasha Jun, Alia Joy Tyndale House Publishers, 2023
“This mesmerizes.” — Publishers Weekly starred review “I’ve always felt unfit as a Korean but somehow too Korean everywhere else.” Tasha Jun has always been caught between worlds: American and Korean, faith and doubt, family devotion and fierce independence. As a Korean American, she wandered between seemingly opposing worlds, struggling to find a voice to speak and a firm place for her feet to land. The world taught Tasha that her Korean normal was a barrier to belonging—that assimilation was the only way she would ever be truly accepted. But if that were true, did that mean God had made a mistake in knitting her together? Told with tender honesty and compelling prose, Tell Me the Dream Again is a memoir-in-essays exploring what it means to be biracial in America today the joy and healing that comes with embracing every part of who we are, and how our identity in Christ is tightly woven with the unique colors, scents, and culture he’s given us. We are not outsiders to God. When we let all the details of ourselves unfold—when we embrace who we were divinely knit together to be—this is when we’ll fully experience his perfect love.

Gender, Work and Social Control: A Century of Disability Benefits (Palgrave Socio-Legal Studies) Jackie Gulland Palgrave Macmillan UK, Imprint Palgrave Macmillan, Palgrave Macmillan socio-legal studies, 1st ed. 2019, London, 2019
This book uses previously unknown archive materials to explore the meaning of the term ‘incapable of work’ over a hundred years (1911–present). Nowadays, people claiming disability benefits must undergo medical tests to assess whether or not they are capable of work. Media reports and high profile campaigns highlight the problems with this system and question whether the process is fair. These debates are not new and, in this book, Jackie Gulland looks at similar questions about how to assess people’s capacity for work from the beginning of the welfare state in the early 20th century. Amongst many subject areas, she explores women’s roles in the domestic sphere and how these were used to consider their capacity for work in the labour market. The book concludes that incapacity benefit decision making is really about work: what work is, what it is not, who should do it, who should be compensated when work does not provide a sufficient income and who should be exempted from any requirement to look for it. Erscheinungsdatum: 18.07.2019

Handbook of Family Diversity edited by David H. Demo, Katherine R. Allen, Mark A. Fine Oxford University Press, USA, New York, New York State, 2000
The Status Of The American Family Has Been The Topic Of Considerable Debate In Recent Years. As Demographic Changes Make Our Country More Multicultural And As New Types Of Families Continue To Form And Become More Common, It Is Essential For Sociologists, Social Workers, Family Researchers, And Psychologists To Understand The Full Range Of Diversity In American Families. However, To Varying Extents, African American Families, Latino Families, Asian American Families, Poverty-stricken And Near-poor Families, Lesbian And Gay Families, Single-parent Families, And Stepfamilies Have Been Marginalized From Mainstream Scholarship. As A Result, Students Taking Courses On Families Are Typically Not Exposed To The Experiences Of These Groups. The Handbook Of Family Diversity Fills This Gap In Scholarship By Providing A Comprehensive Discussion Of Several Key Dimensions Where Families Differ: Race, Socioeconomic Status, Family Structure, Sexual Orientation, And Gender. It Is Designed To Inform And Broaden The Debate Among Students, Family Scholars, Practitioners, And Policymakers As To What Constitutes A Family And How Families Should Function. Featuring Commissioned Chapters By Prominent Scholars From A Variety Of Fields, The Handbook Of Family Diversity Discusses Different Types Of Families From Widely Varying Social And Economic Backgrounds. These Authoritative Yet Highly Readable Essays Discuss Important Public Policy Issues Pertaining To Family Diversity And Describe The Everyday Realities Of Family Interactions--the Tensions And Dynamics Of Intimacy, Support, Control, Communication, And Conflict. Multiple Disciplinary, Theoretical, And Methodological Perspectives Are Presented Throughout The Volume, Providing Evidence That There Is No Unified Or Monolithic Perspective On Families. Emphasizing The Most Current And Cutting Edge Knowledge On Family Diversity, The Handbook Of Family Diversity Sets A New Standard For Research In This Important And Vital Area Of Study. Pt. I. Learning with Women in Jail : Creating Community-Based Participatory Research Jill McCracken Springer International Publishing, SpringerBriefs in Anthropology, SpringerBriefs in Anthropology, 1, 2019
In this monograph, the ethical implications of engaging in research with vulnerable populations is explored and demostrates how Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR) both enhances the research while addressing these ethical complexities. Although CBPR encompasses different levels of community engagement, in general, the participants, or co-researchers, are involved in the formulation of the research questions and methodologies because they are central to the conversation about what should be researched and how. Participants are directly involved in formulating the study problems and finding solutions, and usually the goal is to create social change that can be applied to and potentially transform the community. __Learning with Women in Jail: Creating Community Based Participatory Research__ documents the research process to better understand the causes for incarceration and recidivism. The study used a (CBPR) framework so that the people who had directly experienced incarceration would lead the research as much as possible, from framing the research questions and methodologies to data capture and analysis.

The Polemics of C.L.R. James and Contemporary Black Activism Ornette D. Clennon (auth.) Springer International Publishing : Imprint : Palgrave Macmillan, 1st ed. 2017, 2016
This book draws on case examples of contemporary black activism in South Manchester and contrasts them with events that surrounded C.L.R. James and his activism between 1935 and 1950. In doing so, the author considers what Brexit, the Labour Party and Theresa May’s audit on racism in the UK have in common with the wartime decline of the British Empire, the rise and fall of the trade unions and the Italian invasion of Ethiopia. Clennon dialogues with James’ theoretical frameworks around capitalism, neoliberalism and post-colonialism, and uses this creative interplay of ideas to help make sense of contemporary events and issues of social justice from a UK ethnic minority perspective. Using Fanon, Gordon, Marx and Chakrabarty amongst others, the study explores James’ take on dialectical materialism and uses this as an ongoing analytical tool throughout the volume with which he weaves an uneasy path between post-colonial and post-Marxist theories. __The Polemics of C.L.R. James and Contemporary Black Activism__ will be of interest to students and scholars across a range of social science disciplines, including sociology, cultural studies, education and black studies.

Women Miners in Developing Countries : Pit Women and Others Martha Macintyre, Kuntala Lahiri-Dutt Taylor and Francis, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), London, 2017
Contrary to their masculine portrayal, mines have always employed women in valuable and productive roles. Yet, pit life continues to be represented as a masculine world of work, legitimizing men as the only mineworkers and large, mechanized, and capitalized operations as the only form of mining. Bringing together a range of case studies of women miners from past and present in Asia, the Pacific region, Latin America and Africa, this book makes visible the roles and contributions of women as miners. It also highlights the importance of engendering small and informal mining in the developing world as compared to the early European and American mines. The book shows that women are engaged in various kinds of mining and illustrates how gender and inequality are constructed and sustained in the mines, and also how ethnic identities intersect with those gendered identities.

Memories of Migration: Gender, Ethnicity, and Work in the Lives of Jewish and Italian Women in New York, 1870-1924 (S U N Y Series on Women and Work) (Suny Series in Women and Work) Kathie Friedman-Kasaba State University of New York Press, S U N Y Series on Women and Work, 1996
Offers a comparative historical study of women’s migration from Russia and Italy to New York at the turn of the 20th century. Taking an interdisciplinary and global perspective, the book examines the causes and consequences of women’s migration, contrasting the adaptation experiences of Jewish and Italian women. "The author provides a brilliant integration of world-system, migration, race and gender literature to recast the experiences of women migrants/immigrants. This is a first-rate synthesis and pathbreaking analysis of a broad literature that will have an impact across sociology, history, demography, social work, etc. This is a major contribution to world-system and gender studies where world-system researchers have for the most part ignored women's lives and for gender researchers who have ignored global economic contexts." -- Kathryn Ward, Southern Illinois University at Carbondale "The book is highly readable, comprehensive, and more importantly, lively for an introduction to the experience of immigrant women at the turn of the century. It provides both general and specific information for American and European scholars from a variety of disciplines, such as women's studies, political science, history, economics, and sociology. The feminist interpretations of the issues and problems involving the international movement of female workers is a major strength of this book." -- Joyce Tang, University of Vermont The migrant has been designated the central or defining figure of the 20th century. Yet, for much of this period, research and theory have centered on adult men as representative, ignoring women's part in international migration. Weaving together history, theory, and immigrant women's own words, Memories of Migration reveals women's multifaceted participation in the mass migrations from eastern and southern Europe to the United States at the turn of the century. By focusing on women's responses to Americanization organizations, coethnic community networks, and income-producing opportunities, this book provides rich insight into the sources of immigrant women's distinct fates in America.

The Celts : The Construction of a Myth Malcolm Chapman St. Martin's Press, Springer Nature, London, 1992
The Celts are commonly considered to be one of the great peoples of Europe, with continuous racial, cultural and linguistic genealogy from the Iron Age to the modern-day "Celtic fringe". This book shows, in contrast, that the Celts, as they have been known and understood over two thousand years, are simply the "other" of the dominant cultural and political traditions of Europe. It is this continuous "otherness" which lends them apparent continuity and substance. Modern social anthropology, Celtic studies, literary and historical evidence, and the author's own fieldwork in Brittany and Scotland, are brought together in demonstration of this.

Supplementary Schools and Ethnic Minority Communities : A Social Positioning Perspective Amanda Simon Palgrave Macmillan UK : Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan, 1st ed, Place of publication not identified, 2018
This book provides a unique perspective into the world of supplementary schooling, exploring both the social positioning of these schools and the ethnic minority communities they serve. The author presents a close examination of the establishment and functioning of supplementary schools which offers a fresh and novel insight into acculturation processes. Drawing on empirical data gathered from staff interviews, classroom observations and interactive recordings, this book explores the operation of supplementary schools as sites of identity construction where the community identities are preserved, defended, renegotiated and reconstructed. The various modes of construction are indicative of the acculturation experiences of ethnic minority communities and the ways in which these communities negotiate residence in one country whilst having roots in another. This book therefore offers a revealing conceptualization of supplementary schools, not merely as educational spaces, but socio-political enterprises that are situated within and respond to various historical, social and political contexts. This pioneering work will appeal to students and scholars in the fields of education, migration and identity. Erscheinungsdatum: 07.06.2018

Chinese Aid and African Development: Exporting Green Revolution (International Political Economy Series) Deborah Bräutigam (auth.) Palgrave Macmillan UK, International political economy series, New York, New York State, 1998
## Preface Early in the 1960s, Chinese Prime Minister Zhou Enlai pronounced the African continent 'ripe for revolution.' At that time, most analysts predicted that China would be exporting its rural-based 'red revolution' to Africa. Instead, the most enduring legacy of Chinese involvement in rural Africa may well be the 'green revolution': the thousands of hectares of irrigated rice now cultivated by farmers in dozens of African countries. This study had its origins in an effort to document and analyze China's foreign aid in rural Africa. Although it is taken for granted that foreign aid involves the introduction (or 'export') of sometimes revolutionary practices and ideas -the 'software' of change -there has been much less analysis of the ways in which domestic ideas about development held by particular donor countries translate into distinctive approaches to development assistance. Likewise, the tendency for the evaluation of foreign aid efforts to focus primarily on technical, cultural, and economic aspects of projects, leaving out the political context, limits an important source of influence on the outcome of foreign aid, and the degree to which new ideas about development take hold in developing countries. It is my hope that this book will not only fill an important gap in the literature on China and Africa by providing the first detailed examination of Chinese aid, but also that it will contribute to the important debate on the role of foreign aid in African agricultural development. Although the first round of efforts to export the green revolution to Africa have largely been judged a failure, at least with regard to rice, this study suggests that with better institutional support and stronger states, the green revolution may yet be a viable path for those parts of rural Africa where irrigation appears to be technologically and, on paper, economically feasible. This book has benefited from several grants that enabled me to interview rice farmers and African officials, talk with the Chinese about their aid program, and conduct research in the archives of Ministries of

Race Work: The Rise of Civil Rights in the Urban West (Race and Ethnicity in the American West) Matthew C. Whitaker University of Nebraska Press ; Combined Academic [distributor, Race and ethnicity in the American West, Lincoln, Nebraska, 2005
Nearly sixty years ago, Lincoln and Eleanor Ragsdale descended upon the isolated, somewhat desolate, and entirely segregated city of Phoenix, Arizona, in search of freedom and opportunity—a move that would ultimately transform an entire city and, arguably, the nation. Race Work tells the story of this remarkable pair, two of the most influential black activists of the post–World War II American West, and through their story, supplies a missing chapter in the history of the civil rights movement, American race relations, African Americans, and the American West. Matthew C. Whitaker explores the Ragsdales’ family history and how their familial traditions of entrepreneurship, professionalism, activism, and “race work” helped form their activist identity and placed them in a position to help desegregate Phoenix. His work, the first sustained account of white supremacy and black resistance in Phoenix, also uses the lives of the Ragsdales to examine themes of domination, resistance, interracial coalition building, race, gender, and place against the backdrop of the civil rights and post–civil rights eras. An absorbing biography that provides insight into African Americans’ quest for freedom, Race Work reveals the lives of the Ragsdales as powerful symbols of black leadership who illuminate the problems and progress in African American history, American Western history, and American history during the post–World War II era. Class, ethnicity and state in the polarized metropolis : : putting wacquant to work / John Flint; Ryan Powell Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan, 1st ed. 2019, Cham, 2019
Loïc Wacquant is one of the most influential sociological theorists of the contemporary era with his research and writings resonating widely across the social sciences. This edited collection critically responds to Wacquant's distinct approach to understanding the contemporary urban condition in advanced capitalist societies. It comprises chapters focused on Europe and North America from leading international scholars and new emergent voices, which chart new empirical, theoretical and methodological territory. Pivoting on the relationship between class, ethnicity and the state in the (re-)making of urban marginality, the volume takes stock of Wacquant's body of work and assesses its value as a springboard for rethinking urban inequality in polarizing times. Heeding Wacquant's call for constant theoretical critique and development in understanding dynamic urban relations and processes, the contributions challenge, develop and refine Wacquant's framework, while also synthesizing it with other perspectives and bringing it into dialogue with new areas of inquiry. How can Wacquant's work aid the empirical understanding of today's complex urban inequalities? And how can empirical investigation and theoretical synthesis aid the development of Wacquant's framework? The diverse contributors to the collection ask these, and other, searching questions - and Wacquant responds to this critique in the final chapter. This book will be of interest to scholars engaged in understanding the drivers, contexts, and potential responses to contemporary urban marginality. John Flint is Professor of Town and Regional Planning and Head of the Department of Geography at the University of Sheffield, UK. He was previously Head of the Department of Urban Studies and Planning, University of Sheffield, UK. Ryan Powell is Reader in Urban Studies in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at the University of Sheffield, UK, with research interests in the broad areas of urban marginality, urban governance and the stigmatisation of "outsider" groups. His academic background and orientation is multidisciplinary and cuts across urban studies, sociology, geography, politics and criminology.

Watch This! : The Ethics and Aesthetics of Black Televangelism Jonathan L. Walton New York University Press, Religion, Race, and Ethnicity; 1, 2009
An analysis of African American televangelists as cultural icons Through their constant television broadcasts, mass video distributions, and printed publications, African American religious broadcasters have a seemingly ubiquitous presence in popular culture. They are on par with popular entertainers and athletes in the African American community as cultural icons even as they are criticized by others for taking advantage of the devout in order to subsidize their lavish lifestyles. For these reasons questions abound. Do televangelists proclaim the message of the gospel or a message of greed? Do they represent the "authentic" voice of the black church or the Christian Right in blackface? Does the phenomenon reflect orthodox "Christianity" or ethnocentric "Americaninity" wrapped in religious language? Watch This! seeks to move beyond such polarizing debates by critically delving into the dominant messages and aesthetic styles of African American televangelists and evaluating their ethical implications.

Class, ethnicity and state in the polarized metropolis : : putting wacquant to work / John Flint, Ryan Powell Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan, 1st ed.

The second edition of The Routledge Companion to Race and Ethnicity offers readers a broad overview of scholarly exploration of the ways that humans have organized themselves (and have been organized) according to racial and ethnic divisions. More than 80 scholars from around the world and representing multiple academic traditions contribute entries to this accessible yet sophisticated volume that addresses contemporary issues in historical context. The first half of the book challenges readers to grapple with some of the most controversial aspects of categorization, prejudice and discrimination through focused chapters ranging from the notion of Whiteness to the supposed biological rationale for racial categorization. The second half is comprised of 70 shorter entries on specialized concepts, persons and groups that are crucial to understanding these issues. Taken as a whole, this volume provides a broad, multi-disciplinary and global overview of issues that continue to provide challenges to notions of equality and justice. Beyond UN Subcontracting sheds light, through a series of post-Cold War case studies, on whether one United Nations' efforts both to devolve responsibility for security to regional institutions and the delivery of some of their services to international nongovernmental organisations are a step toward or away from better global governance. nexusstc/Ethnicity, Equality of Opportunity, and the British National Health Service/b622469d896f8afbcc10d3b4a2c1b15f.epub
Ethnicity, Equality of Opportunity, and the British National Health Service Paul Iganski; David Mason; English National Board for Nursing, Midwifery, and Health Visiting Ashgate Publishing; Ashgate Pub Ltd, Aldershot, Hants, England, ©2002
"This title was first published in 2002: Numerous reports have identified the serious problems of under-representation of, and discrimination against, minority ethnic groups in the British NHS. It is widely argued that this both raises issues of social justice and undermines the quality of service to minority ethnic patients. Nowhere are these problems more acute than among the largest occupational group in the NHS - nurses. This book reports the results of research carried out for the English National Board for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting to evaluate NHS equal opportunities policy. Drawing on additional original research involving interviews with key policy actors, this fascinating book examines the prospects for a national strategy linking the business and justice cases for the delivery of greater equity in employment and service delivery."--Provided by publisher

Handbook of Race-Ethnicity and Gender in Psychology [recurso electrónico Marie L. Miville, Angela D. Ferguson (eds.) Springer-Verlag New York, 1st ed. 2014, New York, NY, 2014
Multicultural aspects of psychology have received some attention in the literature in the last decade. A number of texts currently address these significant concerns, for example, Counseling the Culturally Different (Sue & Sue, 2008); Handbook of Multicultural Counseling ( Poterotto et l., 2009); and Handbook of Multicultural Counseling Competencies (Pope-Davis & Coleman, 2005). In their most recent editions, several of these books address more nuanced complexities of diversity, for example, the intersections of gender or social class with race-ethnicity. Meanwhile, other texts have addressed gender issues in psychology (Handbook of Counseling Women, Counseling Men), with some attention paid to racial-ethnic and other diversity concerns. Clearly the progression of scholarship in this field reflects the importance of incorporating multiple aspects of diversity within psychology. However, no book currently exists that fully addresses the complexities of race-ethnicity and gender together. Better understanding of the dual impact of race-ethnicity and gender on psychological functioning may lead to more effective conceptualizations of a number of mental health issues, such as domestic violence, addictions, health-related behaviors and achievement. Exploring the impact of race-ethnicity and gender also may provide a broader understanding of self-in-community, as this affects individuals, families and other social groups and work and career development. Topics of interest may include identity development, worldviews and belief systems, parenting styles, interventions for promoting resilience and persistence and strategies for enhancing more accurate diagnostic and treatment modalities. TodayOCOs world is comprised of multiple and intersecting communities that remain in need of psychological models and interventions that support and promote both individual and collective mental health. We believe that utilizing unidimensional conceptual models (e.g. focusing solely on race-ethnicity or gender) no longer adequately addresses psychological concerns that are dynamic, complex and multi-faceted. The proposed Handbook will focus on timely topics which historically have been under-addressed for a number of diverse populations."
