The chapters in this book sharpen the focus on relationships between ethnicity, social class, and therapeutic practice. In so doing the authors explore answers to four interrelated questions: What do people want from their human services system? What do they actually get from them? How effective are various systems? When and under what conditions will people change to another system? The authors have carefully analyzed the data that have significant academic reliability and validity by drawing information from scholars in several fields of study that capture the essence of intrapersonal, interpersonal, intergroup, and organizational interactions. By identifying indigenous and foreign social values and practices, features of social systems that cause them to be similar and different from each other are discerned. Using two different approaches, the authors compare and contrast modern and traditional helping practices, which will help to identify and suggest alternative transcultural helping strategies when appropriate. Das Vorwort zu dem vor mehr als dreißig Jahren veröffentlichten Buch „Schwingungen“, das als dritter Band der neu begründeten Reihe „Leitfäden der angewandten Mathematik und - chanik“ (LAMM-Reihe) erschienen war, begann mit der Feststellung: Es besteht im deutschsprachigen Schrifttum kein Mangel an guten, ja ausgezeichneten Werken zur Schwingungslehre. Warum also soll das Bücherangebot auf diesem Gebiet noch vermehrt werden? Diese naheliegende Frage sei mit dem Hinweis beantwortet, dass für die vorliegende Zusammenstellung die Stoffauswahl und eine Beschränkung im Umfang entscheidend gewesen sind. Beides hängt eng mite- ander zusammen. Es sollte etwa die Stoffmenge gebracht werden, die in einer einsemestrigen Vorlesung bewältigt werden kann; gleichzeitig aber sollte ein nicht zu einseitig begrenzter Überblick gegeben w- den. Dieses Ziel verbot von vornherein jeden Gedanken an Vollständigkeit bezüglich der Ergebnisse der Schwingungslehre. Jedoch wurde eine gewisse Abrundung nicht nur hinsichtlich der Methoden, sondern auch bezüglich der wichtigsten Schwingungs-Erscheinungen angestrebt. Aus der Gliederung wird man erkennen, dass gegenüber anderen Büchern mit ähnlicher Zielsetzung gewisse Schwerpunktsversch- bungen vorgenommen wurden. Leitender Grundgedanke war eine Einteilung der Schwingungstypen nach dem Mechanismus ihrer Entstehung. Neben den autonomen Eigenschwingungen und selbsterregten Schwingungen wurden die heteronomen parametererregten und erzwungenen Schwingungen behandelt. In beide Bereiche übergreifend sind abschließend Koppelschwingungen dargestellt worden. Das Buch erlebte vier Auflagen, von denen die zweite bis vierte durch Korrekturen, Unfor- lierungen und Ergänzungen nur wenig gegenüber der ersten Auflage verändert worden sind.
