Die »Zeitschrift für spekulative Physik« wurde von F. W. J. Schelling herausgegeben und erschien in den Jahren 1800-1801 in zwei Bänden. Neben Schelling veröffentlichten hier seine Schüler Henrik Steffens und Carl August Eschenmayer. Sie diente der Verbreitung und Diskussion der von Schelling inaugurierten Naturphilosophie des Deutschen Idealismus, die seit einiger Zeit erneut an Aktualität gewonnen hat und enthält grundlegende Texte zu diesem Thema wie z. B. Schellings »Allgemeine Deduktion des dynamischen Prozesses«, welche eine systematische Theorie der Materie bietet, seine Abhandlung »Über den wahren Begriff der Naturphilosophie«, in der Schelling den eigenen Ansatz der Naturphilosophie gegenüber der Transzendentalphilosophie herausstellt, sowie Eschenmayers Aufsatz »Spontaneität = Weltseele oder das höchste Prinzip der Naturphilosophie«, der sich mit Schellings Ansatz kritisch auseinandersetzt. Der bedeutendste Beitrag ist die im zweiten Band enthaltene »Darstellung meines Systems der Philosophie« aus der Feder von Schelling, mit der die Periode der Identitätsphilosophie begann. Die Edition beruht auf Vorarbeiten zu den entsprechenden Bänden der historisch-kritischen Ausgabe der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften. Die von Schelling stammenden Texte des Erstdrucks wurden mit dem Abdruck in dessen »Sämmtlichen Werken« kollationiert und wichtige Varianten sowie die Anmerkungen, Zusätze und Korrekturen aus dem Handexemplar des Verfassers im textkritischen Apparat verzeichnet. Primary cultures of astrocytes and neurons are frequently used to investigate metabolic properties of these two important brain cell types. Here we describe methods to generate primary cultures that are highly enriched in astrocytes or cerebellar granule neurons. These cultures are good model systems to investigate the basal metabolism of astrocytes and neurons as well as metabolite export from these cells. As examples for such studies, we describe here in detail the robust practical procedures that we use to investigate cellular glucose consumption and lactate production as well as the cellular contents and the export of glutathione from cultured brain cells. In this context we also describe some viability assays that are useful to confi rm that a given experimental treatment is not toxic for cultured neural cells.

Lynch syndrome (LS) is the most common cause of inherited colorectal cancer, a disease with a high mortality rate. An estimated 37,000 of diagnosed colorectal cancer cases worldwide are attributed to Lynch syndrome each year. Intensive cancer screening, with early initiation and frequent follow-up, can reduce colorectal cancer incidence and mortality in LS patients. This book provides an up-to-date overview on the genetic and epigenetic basis of Lynch syndrome. It evaluates clinical features of the disease and critically comments on molecular tools available for identifying mutations responsible for Lynch syndrome; in addition the importance of functional assays that can help clarify the clinical nature of identified mutations is also discussed. The book also focuses on challenges in genetic counselling of at-risk individuals and discusses related ethical issues. The purpose of the book is to give a concise knowledge base for the broader scientific and medical community, including genetic counselors, in order to improve awareness on the potential impact that the diagnosis of LS has on treatment, management and surveillance of LS patients.
