Managing Breathlessness in Clinical Practice [recurso electrónico Sara Booth, Julie Burkin, Catherine Moffat, Anna Spathis (auth.) Springer London : Imprint : Springer, 10.1007/97, 2014
Breathlessness is increasingly recognised as a common, disabling symptom of many advanced diseases and one that is very difficult to treat. There is now an understanding that a multi-disciplinary approach to management can make a significant impact on the severity of the symptom improving both the patient’s and their carers’ quality of life. Breathlessness is one of the most difficult conditions that palliative care (and other clinicians who care for patients with advanced disease) have to treat. With the improvements in pain control, it is possibly now the most difficult symptom for clinicians to manage: many feel frustrated at not being able to give their patients better care.  Many patients and families are enduring terrible suffering. There has been little progress in improving the symptom, in spite of an increase in the amount of research and interest in it over the last twenty years. The Cambridge Breathlessness Intervention Service (CBIS) has been established since 2004 and is a research-based service which has being evaluated since its inception: its model of caring has been shaped by the patients and families who use it and the clinicians who refer to it. CBIS has firm evidence of its effectiveness with patients with breathlessness with both malignant and non-malignant disease. This book will help others to manage breathlessness in their day-to-day clinical practice and, if so desired, set up their own breathlessness service. There is a well-established website which can be used in conjunction with the book. The book is written to give practical help in the clinical management of breathlessness and written so that the information is easy to access in clinic, ward or home.

Protein-ligand Interactions : Methods and Applications Edwin A. Lewis, Kenneth P. Murphy (auth.), G. Ulrich Nienhaus (eds.) Humana Press, 10.1385/15, 2005
Molecular recognition and binding of ligands (atoms, ions, and molecules) by proteins with high sensitivity and selectivity is of central importance to essentially all biomolecular processes and of key importance for the basic and applied sciences. In Protein-Ligand Interactions: Methods and Applications, leading experts with hands-on experience describe in detail a broad selection of established and emerging techniques for studying the interaction between proteins and ligands, including bulk biochemical techniques, structure analysis, spectroscopy, single-molecule studies, and theoretical/computational tools. Among the highlights are surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and reflectometric biosensor approaches, high-throughput screening with confocal optics microscopy, single molecule fluorescence and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), crystallography of reaction intermediates, and time-resolved X-ray crystallography. The protocols follow the successful Methods in Molecular Biology series format, each offering step-by-step laboratory instructions, an introduction outlining the principle behind the technique, lists of the necessary equipment and reagents, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Cutting-edge and highly practical, Protein-Ligand Interactions: Methods and Applications offers novice and expert researchers alike a broad selection of powerful and widely applicable techniques that can be used to efficiently and successfully solve the task of characterizing protein-ligand interactions.

Harvard Guide To American History, Volumes I And Ii: Revised Edition Frank Freidel; Frank Burt Freidel; Richard K. Showman The Belknap Press of Harvard University Press, Rev. ed. Frank Freidel, editor, with the assistance of Richard K. Showman., Cambridge, Mass, Massachusetts, 1974
<p>The <i>Harvard Guide</i> has a long and distinguished history in the annals of reference works. First prepared in 1896 by Albert Bushnell Hart and Edward Charming, it was a unique scholarly tool. Revised in 1912 by Hart, Charming, and Frederick Jackson Turner, the Guide carried its entries through 1910 and became the standard text.</p> <p>In 1954 the <i>Harvard Guide to American History</i> appeared, prepared and edited by members of the History Department of Harvard: Oscar Handlin, Arthur Meier Schlesinger, Samuel Eliot Morison, Frederick Merk, Arthur Meier Schlesinger, Jr., and Paul Herman Buck. A one-volume compendium, the Guide became a classic in historical studies and won a place in every important library—both public and private—of American history.</p> <p>Now twenty years later, Frank Freidel, Charles Warren Professor of American History at Harvard, and Richard K. Showman, of the Rhode Island Historical Society, have made the Guide, once more, the most essential reference book for historians. Their work was sponsored by the Charles Warren Center for the Study of American History at Harvard.</p> <p>This thoroughly revised, comprehensive guide to American history reflects the explosive growth in historical publications and materials in the past two decades, and the expanding interests of American historians.</p> <p>About one third of the entries are new. These not only represent the surge of books and articles during the last generation, but also reflect new areas of history. The brief topical sections in the last edition have grown into a three-hundred-page coverage of economic, social, and intellectual history. Demography, social structure, ethnicity, and the new urban and cultural dimensions of history find a place. Colonial history receives both topical and chronological treatment in an all-inclusive section. United States history since 1759, primarily political and diplomatic, appears in the familiar chronological form.</p> <p>Enlarged and up-to-date sections cover research methods and material. There are practical suggestions on research, writing, and publication, and extensive citation of finding aids and bibliographies to introduce the user to collections of printed materials, public documents, microform, manuscripts, and archives. The section on care and editing of manuscripts, long standard on the subject, appears unchanged; other sections, such as those on automated data retrieval, quantitative techniques, and oral history, reflect innovations in the historian's craft.</p> <p>The new <i>Guide</i> has been recast in columnar form to make it easier to locate references and includes crossreference by pages and sections to facilitate faster use.</p>

lgli/MMB/MMB vol.305 Nienhaus G.U. (ed.) Protein-ligand interaction Methods and Applications (Humana Press, 2005)(ISBN 1588293726)(537s).pdf
Protein'Ligand Interactions: Methods and Applications (Methods in Molecular Biology, 305) Edwin A. Lewis, Kenneth P. Murphy (auth.), G. Ulrich Nienhaus (eds.) HUMANA PRESS INC., Methods in Molecular Biology, Methods in Molecular Biology 305, 1, 2005
The protocols follow the successful Methods in Molecular BiologyTM series format, each offering step-by-step laboratory instructions, an introduction outlining the principle behind the technique, lists of the necessary equipment and reagents, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Cutting-edge and highly practical, Protein-Ligand Interactions: Methods and Applications offers novice and expert researchers alike a broad selection of powerful and widely applicable techniques that can be used to efficiently and successfully solve the task of characterizing protein-ligand interactions.

Extending Educational Change : International Handbook of Educational Change Andy Hargreaves (auth.), Andy Hargreaves (eds.) Springer Netherlands : Imprint: Springer, International handbook of educational change (2005 ed.), 1st ed. 2005, Dordrecht, 2005
ANDY HARGREAVES Department of Teacher Education, Curriculum and Instruction Lynch School of Education, Boston College, MA, U.S.A. ANN LIEBERMAN Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, Stanford, CA, U.S.A. MICHAEL FULLAN Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto, Canada DAVID HOPKINS Department for Education and Skills, London, U.K. This set of four volumes on Educational Change brings together evidence and insights on educational change issues from leading writers and researchers in the field from across the world. Many of these writers, whose chapters have been specially written for these books, have been investigating, helping initiate and implementing educational change, for most or all of their lengthy careers. Others are working on the cutting edge of theory and practice in educational change, taking the field in new or even more challenging directions. And some are more skeptical about the literature of educational change and the assumptions on which it rests. They help us to approach projects of understanding or initiating educational change more deeply, reflectively and realistically. Educational change and reform have rarely had so much prominence within public policy, in so many different places. Educational change is ubiquitous. It figures large in Presidential and Prime Ministerial speeches. It is at or near the top of many National policy agendas. Everywhere, educational change is not only a policy priority but also major public news. Yet action to bring about educational change usually exceeds people's understanding of how to do so effectively. Erscheinungsdatum: 14.10.2005

Evaluation of Novel Inhibitors of ACC Oxidase Possessing Cyclopropyl Moiety V. Dourtoglou; E. Koussissi; K. Petritis Springer Netherlands : Imprint: Springer, Biology and Biotechnology of the Plant Hormone Ethylene II, 1999
Ethylene production is inhibited by several new structural analogues of amino cyclopropane carboxylic acid (ACC), without an amine function in the Cl position. The Substituted Cyclopropane Carboxylic Acids (SCCA) require a minimal cyclopropane ring but no amine function to exhibit inhibition. Ethylene inhibition was essayed on tomato discs, and on partially purified ACC oxidase from apple fruits. These new inhibitors possess a cyclopropane ring and a substituant (R2) in the C2 position. First results showed that the amount of ethylene inhibition is strongly correlated to the chemical structure of (R2, R5) and to the presence or not of a carboxylic function in the CI position of the cyclopropane ring. To evaluate the nature of inhibition, kinetic studies were made using partially purified ACC oxidase from apple fruits. From all the inhibitors tested the best results were obtained using transphenyl cyclopropane carboxylic acid and cyclopropane I, I dicarboxylic acid.

Empirical Studies of Environmental Policies in Europe Klaus Conrad, Tobias F. N. Schmidt (auth.), John W. Maxwell, Jürgen von Hagen (eds.) Springer US, ZEI Studies in European Economics and Law, ZEI Studies in European Economics and Law 3, 1, 2000
John W. Maxwell and Jiirgen von Hagen Kelley School of Business, Indiana University; ZEI, University of Bonn, Indiana University, and CEPR Prior to the 1970's, economic studies of the natural environment were chiefly concerned with the optimal extraction of natural resources such as oil, coal, and timber. This focus reflected the commonly held belief that the natural environmental was sufficient to sustain the world's population in relative comfort (at least in developed nations) and was "there for the taking". By the late 1960's, however, the spectacular levels of economic growth that had taken place since the Second World War began to exact a visible toll on the natural environment. This visibility prompted growing concern for the environment among activists, government officials, academics and the pUblic. This concern has followed a general upward, though cyclic, trend to the present day. Remarkable events during this trend include the issuing of the Brundtland report, and the world environmental summits help in Rio and Kyoto. Concern for the natural environment has impacted the discipline of economics, resulting in the birth of the field of environmental economics that has recently eclipsed in popularity its parent field of natural resource economics. Biology and Biotechnology of the Plant Hormone Ethylene II P. John, E. A. Reynolds, A. G. Prescott, A.-D. Bauchot (auth.), A. K. Kanellis, C. Chang, H. Klee, A. B. Bleecker, J. C. Pech, D. Grierson (eds.) Springer Netherlands : Imprint: Springer, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1999, 2012
The inflorescence of the monoecious maize plant is unique among the Gramineae in the sharp separation of the male and female structures. The male tassel at the terminus of the plant most often sheds pollen before the visual appearance of the receptive silks of th the female ear at a lateral bud, normally at the 10 leaf [I]. Earlier studies examined the ontogeny of the growing tissues beginning with the embryo in the kernel through to the obvious protuberances of the growing point as the kernel germinates. The differentiated developing soon-to-become tassel and the lateral bulges that develop into the ears on the lateral buds become apparent very early in the germinating kernel [2, 3, 46]. A certain number of cells are destined for tassel and ear development [8]. As the plant develops, there is a phase transition [\3, 16] from the vegetative lateral buds to the reproductive lateral buds. This change in phase has been ascribed to genotypic control as evidenced in the differences among different genotypes in the initiation of the reproductive [I]. The genetic control of tassel and ear initiation has been gleaned from anatomical observations. Lejeune and Bernier [I2] found that maize plants terminate the initiation of additional axillary meristems at the time of tassel initiation. This would indicate that the top-most ear shoot is initiated on the same day as the initiation of tassel development and this event signals the end of the undifferentiated growing point.

Macht des Vertrauens : Perspektiven und aktuelle Herausforderungen im unternehmerischen Kontext Philipp Friebe (auth.), Jens Vollmar, Roman Becker, Isabella Hoffend (eds.) Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden : Imprint: Springer Gabler, 1, 2013
