nexusstc/Characterisation of displacement cascade damage in Cu/sub 3/Au produced by fusion-neutron irradiation/18ccc350c9e3e05454addb1db7fe89be.pdf
Characterisation of displacement cascade damage in Cu/sub 3/Au produced by fusion-neutron irradiation C A English Affiliation: UKAEA Atomic Energy Research Establishment, Harwell. Metallurgy Div.; M L Jenkins; M A Kirk Affiliation: Oxford Univ. (UK). Dept. of Metallurgy and Science of Materials Institute of Physiscs Publishing, CRC Press (Unlimited), Bristol [England], 2001
As the selection of material for particular engineering properties becomes increasingly important in keeping costs down, methods for evaluating material properties also become more relevant. One such method examines the geometry of grain boundaries, which reveals much about the properties of the material.Studying material properties from their geometrical measurements, The Measurement of Grain Boundary Geometry provides a framework for a specialized application of electron microscopy for metals and alloys and, by extension, for ceramics, minerals, and semiconductors. The book presents an overview of the developments in the theory of grain boundary geometry and its practical applications in material engineering. It also covers the tunneling electron microscope (TEM), experimental aspects of data collection, data processing, and examples from actual investigations. Each step of the analysis process is clearly described, from data collection through processing, analysis, representation, and display to applications. The book also includes a glossary of terms.Exploring both the experimental and analytical aspects of the subject, this practical reference guide is essential for researchers and students involved in material properties, whether in physics, materials science, metallurgy, or physical chemistry.

ia/strangenessnucle0000apct.pdf
Strangeness nuclear physics : proceedings of the APCTP Workshop (SNP'99), Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea, 19-22 February 1999 Il-t Cheon; Toshio Motoba; Hong Seung-woo World Scientific Publishing Company, World Scientific Publishing Company, Singapore, 2000
The unique role of strangeness in nuclear physics has recently attracted much attention, from both the theoretical and experimental viewpoints. This is due not only to the broad spectrum of possible hadron many-body systems with strangeness, but also to the fact that strangeness gives us an opportunity to study fundamental baryon-baryon interactions in a new perspective. Our knowledge of this subject has widened as the scope of hypernuclear experiments has expanded from strangeness exchange and the associated production reactions to hypernuclear weak decays, β decays, cascade hypernuclei, double-Λ events, electroproduction of strangeness, etc. This trend will be accelerated by the full operation of new laboratories such as TJLab, COSY, DAΦNE, JHF, MAMI, and others. Various aspects of those important and exciting topics are discussed in this book in order to get a perspective of this fast developing area of nuclear physics.

lgli/dvd69/Suzuki Y., Totsuka Y. Neutrino Physics and Astrophysics[c] Proceedings of the XVIII International Conference on Neutrino[..] 1998 (1999)(en)(560s).pdf
Neutrino physics and astrophysics : proceedings of the XVIII International Conference on Neutrino Physics and Astrophysics, Takayama, Japan, 4-9 June 1998 edited by Y. Suzuki, Y. Totsuka North Holland, July 1, 1999
The scientific program of these important proceedings was arranged to cover most of the field of neutrino physics. In light of the rapid growth of interest stimulated by new interesting results from the field, more than half of the papers presented here are related to the neutrino mass and oscillations, including atmospheric and solar neutrino studies. Neutrino mass and oscillations could imply the existence of a mass scale many orders of magnitudes higher than presented in current physics and will probably guide scientists beyond the standard model of particle physics.<br>

nexusstc/Sixty Years of Double Beta Decay: From Nuclear Physics to Beyond Standard Model/f761daa27ee3408804f347fd1f387e47.pdf
Sixty years of double beta decay : from nuclear physics to beyond standard model particle physics Hans Volker Klapdor-Kleingrothaus World Scientific Publishing Company, Hardcover, 2001
Nuclear double beta decay is one of the most promising tools for probing beyond-the-standard-model physics on beyond-accelerator energy scales. It is already now probing the TeV scale, on which new physics should manifest itself according to theoretical expectations. Only in the early 1980s was it known that double beta decay yields information on the Majorana mass of the exchanged neutrino. At present, the sharpest bound for the electron neutrino mass arises from this process. It is only in the last 10 years that the much more far-reaching potential of double beta decay has been discovered. Today, the potential of double beta decay includes a broad range of topics that are equally relevant to particle physics and astrophysics, such as masses of heavy neutrinos, of sneutrinos, as SUSY models, compositeness, leptoquarks, left-right symmetric models, and tests of Lorentz symmetry and equivalence principle in the neutrino sector. Double beta decay has become indispensable nowadays for solving the problem of the neutrino mass spectrum and the structure of the neutrino mass matrix — together with present and future solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillation experiments. Some future double beta experiments (like GENIUS) will be capable to be simultaneously neutrino observatories for double beta decay and low-energy solar neutrinos, and observatories for cold dark matter of ultimate sensitivity. This invaluable book outlines the development of double beta research from its beginnings until its most recent achievements, and also presents the outlook for its highly exciting future.

Controversy and Consensus: Nuclear Beta Decay 1911 - 1934 (Science Networks. Historical Studies) Carsten Jensen; Finn Aaserud; Helge Kragh; Erik Rüdinger; Roger H Stuewer Basel ; Boston, Mass.: Birkhäuser Verlag, Springer Nature, [Place of publication not identified], 2012
To all four of us, Carsten was the best possible friend and colleague. To Finn, he was a fellow student in the history of science for several years at the Niels Bohr Institute; to Relge, he was a welcome resource for personal and intellectual interac tion in an otherwise less than fertile environment for the history of science; Roger was Carsten's friend and advisor, not least in the development of the dissertation on which the present book is based; and as director of the Niels Bohr Archive, Erik was his main advisor in his historical work. Because he was the person closest to Carsten's work on his Ph. D. dissertation on the history of beta decay, on which the present book is based, it is only fitting that Erik stands as single author of the words in Carsten's memory at the very beginning of this book. Before his untimely death shortly after the completion of the Ph. D. disser tation, Carsten had himself plans to develop the dissertation into a book. Being a true perfectionist, he wanted to rework the manuscript substantively, especially with regard to relating it to the broader discussion among historians of science. Charged Particle and Photon Interactions with Matter : Recent Advances, Applications, and Interfaces Yoshihiko Hatano, Yosuke Katsumura, A. Mozumder, Editors CRC Press LLC, 1, 2010
Building on Mozumder’s and Hatano’s Charged Particle and Photon Interactions with Matter: Chemical, Physicochemical, and Biological Consequences with Applications (CRC Press, 2004), Charged Particle and Photon Interactions with Matter: Recent Advances, Applications, and Interfaces expands upon the scientific contents of the previous volume by covering state-of-the-art advances, novel applications, and future perspectives. It focuses on relatively direct applications used mainly in radiation research fields as well as the interface between radiation research and other fields. The book first explores the latest studies on primary processes (the physical stage), particularly on the energy deposition spectra and oscillator strength distributions of molecules interacting with charged particles and photons. Other studies discussed include the use of synchrotron radiation in W-value studies and the progress achieved with positrons and muons interacting with matter. It then introduces new theoretical studies on the physicochemical and chemical stages that describe the behavior of electrons in liquid hydrocarbons and the high-LET radiolysis of liquid water. The book also presents new experimental research on the physicochemical and chemical stages with specific characteristics of matter or specific experimental conditions, before covering new experimental studies on the biological stage. The last set of chapters focuses on applications in health physics and cancer therapy, applications to polymers, the applications and interface formation in space science and technology, and applications for the research and development of radiation detectors, environmental conservation, plant breeding, and nuclear engineering. Edited by preeminent scientists and with contributions from an esteemed group of international experts, this volume advances the field by offering greater insight into how charged particles and photons interact with matter. Bringing together topics across a spectrum of scientific and technological areas, it provides clear explanations of the dynamic processes involved in and applications of interface formation.

Neutron Cross Sections, Volume 1: Neutron Resonance Parameters and Thermal Cross Sections, Part A represents the fourth edition of what was previously known as BNL-325, Neutron Cross Sections, Volume 1. This three-chapter book provides the extensive list of detailed individual resonance parameters for each isotope. The first chapter deals with the thermal cross sections and average resonance parameters, as well as the physics of thermal and resonance neutrons, with particular emphasis on evaluation methods. This chapter also includes tables of standards of capture cross sections and scattering lengths, and commonly used nuclear physics formulas. The second chapter covers the direct or valence capture and the Brink-Axel treatment of electric dipole radiation. These topics are followed by a discussion on spin-dependent scattering lengths that are of interest to solid state. The third chapter describes the Maxwellian 30-keV capture cross sections that are of importance to studies of nucleosynthesis and age of the universe. This chapter also examines the s- and p-wave average radiative widths and gamma-ray strength functions that are required in capture cross section measurements. This book will appeal to nuclear and astrophysicists.

Beta beams : neutrino beams Mats Lindroos & Mauro Mezzetto Imperial College Press ; Distributed by World Scientific Pub. Co, Illustrated, 2009-09-01
"The beta-beam concept for the generation of electron neutrino beams was first proposed by Piero Zucchelli in 2002. The idea created quite a stir, challenging the idea that intense neutrino beams only could be produced from the decay of pions or muons in classical neutrino beams facilities or in future neutrino factories. The concept initially struggled to make an impact but the hard work by many machine physicists, phenomenologists and theoreticians over the last five years has won the beta-beam a well-earned position as one of the frontrunners for a possible future world laboratory for high intensity neutrino oscillation physics. This is the first complete monograph on the beta-beam concept. The book describes both technical aspects and experimental aspects of the beta-beam, providing i) students and scientists with an insight into the possibilities offered by beta-beams; ii) facility designers with a starting point for future studies; and iii) policy makers with a comprehensive picture of the limits and possibilities offered by a beta-beam."--Jacket

The Nature of Light: What is a Photon? (Optical Science and Engineering Series) Chandra Roychoudhuri; A.F. Kracklauer; Kathy Creath Boca Raton: CRC Press, CRC Press (Unlimited), Boca Raton, 2008
Focusing on the unresolved debate between Newton and Huygens from 300 years ago, The Nature of Light: What is a Photon? discusses the reality behind enigmatic photons. It explores the fundamental issues pertaining to light that still exist today. Gathering contributions from globally recognized specialists in electrodynamics and quantum optics, the book begins by clearly presenting the mainstream view of the nature of light and photons. It then provides a new and challenging scientific epistemology that explains how to overcome the prevailing paradoxes and confusions arising from the accepted definition of a photon as a monochromatic Fourier mode of the vacuum. The book concludes with an array of experiments that demonstrate the innovative thinking needed to examine the wave-particle duality of photons. Looking at photons from both mainstream and out-of-box viewpoints, this volume is sure to inspire the next generation of quantum optics scientists and engineers to go beyond the Copenhagen interpretation and formulate new conceptual ideas about light-matter interactions and substantiate them through inventive applications.

Muon Spin Rotation, Relaxation, and Resonance: Applications to Condensed Matter (International Series of Monographs on Physics, 147) by Alain Yaouanc, Pierre Dalmas de Réotier OUP Oxford, Oxford University Press USA, Oxford [England], 2011
Primarily intended for postgraduate students and researchers in the fields of condensed matter science, chemical physics and material science, who plan to use the muon spin rotation, relaxation amd resonance (μSR) techniques, this book combines for the first time a detailed discussion of the physical information contained in the measured polarisation functions with real-life examples taken from the literature. It is divided in three main parts. The first part presents some typical results of the application of μSR and explains the basic principles involved. The second part is the core of this book. It presents a comprehensive discussion of the measured polarisation functions. In the third part we analyse in four chapters selected examples taken from the following fields: diffusion properties of muon and muonium, magnetism, superconductivity, and muonium centres in materials. The book is completed by an epilogue and eight appendices.

Measurements of Neutrino Mass: Volume 170 International School of Physics 'Enrico Fermi' (Proceedings of the International School of Physics 'enrico Fermi' Course) edited by F. Ferroni and F. Vissani, directors of the course, and C. Brofferio = Misure della massa del neutrino : rendiconti della Scuola internazionale di fisica "Enrico Fermi", Varenna sul Lago di Como, Villa Monastero, 17-27 June 2008 / a cura di F. Ferroni e F. Vissani, diretori del corso, e di C. Brofferio IOS Press ; Società italiana di fisica, IOS Press, Amsterdam, 2009
This volume offers a valuable insight into various aspects of the ongoing work directed at measuring neutrino mass. It took twenty years to refute the assertions of Bethe and Peierls that neutrinos were not observable, but it has since been realized that much can be learnt from these particles. The moral is, as Fiorini argues here, that the study of neutrinos was and remains demanding but rewarding. Subjects addressed in this volume include clarifying the meaning of the Klapdor-Kleingrothaus results, probing the Majorana nature of neutrinos, observing lepton number violating effects for the first time, studying the end point of the spectrum in the search for neutrino masses and speculating whether it is possible to measure neutrino masses in cosmology. Lectures are enriched with rich historical overviews and valuable introductory material. Attention is also given to theoretical topics such as the evolution of the concept of mass in particle physics, a status report on neutrino oscillations and current discussion on neutrino masses. The reader is further reminded that neutrino masses may also have some bearing on the very origin of the matter among us, and have many deep links with other important lines of current physics research. nexusstc/Photonic Crystals: Towards Nanoscale Photonic Devices/04b4b580273f427907ee2e664d530f32.djvu
Photonic crystals : towards nanoscale photonic devices Jean-Michel Lourtioz, Henri Benisty, Vincent Berger, Jean-Michel Gerard, Daniel Maystre, Alexei Tchelnokov, P.de Fornel, Dominique Pagnoux Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg, 1 edition, December 31, 1999
Just like the periodical crystalline potential in solid-state crystals determines their properties for the conduction of electrons, the periodical structuring of photonic crystals leads to envisioning the possibility of achieving a control of the photon flux in dielectric and metallic materials. The use of photonic crystals as a cage for storing, filtering or guiding light at the wavelength scale thus paves the way to the realisation of optical and optoelectronic devices with ultimate properties and dimensions. This should contribute toward meeting the demands for a greater miniaturisation that the processing of an ever increasing number of data requires. **Photonic Crystals intends to provide students and researchers from different fields with the theoretical background needed for modelling photonic crystals and their optical properties, while at the same time presenting the large variety of devices, from optics to microwaves, where photonic crystals have found applications. As such, it aims at building bridges between optics, electromagnetism and solid-state physics.** This book was written by six specialists of nanophotonics, and was coordinated by Jean-Michel Lourtioz, head of the Institut d'?lectronique Fondamentale in Orsay and coordinator of the French Research Network in Nanophotonics.

Neutron Scattering Methods And Studies (chemical Engineering Methods And Technology) Michael J Lyons; ProQuest (Firm) Nova Science Publishers, Incorporated, Chemical Engineering Methods and Technology, 1, 2011
Neutron scattering encompasses all scientific techniques whereby the deflection of neutron radiation is used as a scientific probe. Neutrons readily interact with atomic nuclei and magnetic fields from unpaired electrons, making a useful probe of both structure and magnetic order. Neutron Scattering falls into two basic categories - elastic and inelastic. This book presents research in the study of neutron scattering, including neutron diffuse scattering measurements from ionic crystals and metal crystals; small angle scattering analysis of virus-like particles for biomedical diagnostic assays; the structure and properties of different proteins by small angles neutrons scattering; neutron scattering methods in the investigation of the SC lipid membrane structure; and neutron scattering from solutions of biological macromolecules.

MUON PHYSICS VOLUME 3 CHEMISTRY AND SOLIDS VERNON W.HUGHES,G.S.WU Academic Press, Incorporated, Elsevier Ltd., New York, 1975
Muon Physics, Volume III: Chemistry and Solids explores muon chemistry and muons in matter, with emphasis on positive muons and muonium in matter; mesomolecular processes induced by muons; and depolarization of negative muons. The interaction of muonic atoms with the medium is also discussed. This volume is comprised of a single chapter divided into three sections and begins with a discussion on the interactions of positive muons and muonium with matter, especially their precession, depolarization, deceleration, and thermalization. A phenomenological description of the production and behavior of polarized positive muons is offered, and the qualitative behavior of the muon spin in muonium is considered along with its evolution in quasi-free muonium. The next section focuses on mesomolecular processes induced by mesons, paying particular attention to successive stages of stopping and absorption of negative mesons. The results of an experimental study of mesoatomic and mesomolecular processes in hydrogen are presented, together with theoretical calculations. Finally, the depolarization of negative muons and the interaction of muonic atoms with the medium are discussed. This book is written primarily for physicists as well as students and researchers in physics.

Neutrino physics remains one of the most exciting fields of fundamental physics today. The neutrino's position at the intersection of particle physics, astrophysics, and nuclear physics ensures continuing interest in the subject. Major activities at accelerators like Fermilab, KEK and CERN, in addition to underground facilities like Gran Sasso, Kamioka and Sudbury, continue to enhance our understanding of the origins and properties of neutrinos, and their implications for the Standard Model and cosmology. Neutrino Physics provides an up to date and comprehensive introduction to the subject as well as an invaluable resource for researchers in physics and astrophysics. Starting with a brief historical overview the author proceeds to review fundamental neutrino properties, the neutrino mass question, and their place within and beyond the Standard Model. The final chapters examine the role of neutrinos in modern astroparticle physics, cosmology and the dark matter problem. The book concludes with a summary of the current status of neutrino physics and the implications of recent results. Written to be accessible to readers from different backgrounds in nuclear, particle or astrophysics and with a detailed reference list, this title will be essential for any researcher or advanced student who needs to understand modern neutrino physics. Neutron Scattering (Volume 44) (Experimental Methods in the Physical Sciences, Volume 44) Felix Fernandez-Alonso, David L. Price Amsterdam: ElsevierAcademic Press, Elsevier Ltd., San Diego, CA, 2013
This work covers in some detail the application of neutron scattering to different fields of physics, materials science, chemistry, biology, the earth sciences and engineering. Its goal is to enable researchers in a particular area to identify aspects of their work in which neutron scattering techniques might contribute, conceive the important experiments to be done, assess what is required to carry them out, write a successful proposal for one of the major user facilities, and perform the experiments under the guidance of the appropriate instrument scientist. The authors of the various chapters take account of the advances in experimental techniques over the past 25 years--for example, neutron reflectivity and spin-echo spectroscopy and techniques for probing the dynamics of complex materials and biological systems. Furthermore, with the third-generation spallation sources recently constructed in the United States and Japan and in the advanced planning stage in Europe, there is an increasing interest in time-of-flight techniques and short wavelengths. Correspondingly, the improved performance of cold moderators at both reactors and spallation sources has extended the long-wavelength capabilities. Chapter authors are pre-eminent in their field Seminal experiments are presented as examples Provides guidance on how to plan, execute and analyse experiments

th This workshop was the 15 in a series that addresses the subject of the dynamics of nuclear reactions. These workshops are dedicated to the concept that bringing together scientists from diverse areas of nuclear reactions promotes the vibrant exchange of ideas. This workshop hosted presentations from experimentalists and theorists, intermediate energy to ultrarelativistic energies, and final results to recent speculations. Many of these scientists would not normally be exposed to the work done in other subfields. Thus the Winter Workshop on Nuclear Dynamics plays a unique role in information exchange and the stimulation of new ides. The field of nuclear dynamics has a bright future. New accelerators are being planned and completed around the world. New detectors are being constructed. New models and theories are being developed to describe these phenomena. The Winter Workshop on Nuclear Dynamics will continue to promote this lively and compelling field of research. WOLFGANG BAUER AND GARY D. WESTFALL v Previous Workshops The following table contains a list of the dates and locations of the previous Winter Workshops on Nuclear Dynamics as well as the members of the organizing committees. The chairpersons of the conferences are underlined.

Neutron Cross Sections, Volume 1B: Neutron Resonance Parameters and Thermal Cross Sections Part B: Z=61-100 (Neutron Cross Sections, Vol 1) Said F. Mughabghab (Auth.) Academic Press; Saunders College Publishing/Harcourt Brace, Neutron cross sections, 1, [4. Aufl.], 1984
