Biological Systematics : The State of the Art
Alessandro Minelli (auth.)
Springer Netherlands, 1 edition, September 30, 1994
To some potential readers of this book the description of Biological System atics as an art may seem outdated and frankly wrong. For most people art is subjective and unconstrained by universal laws. While one picture, play or poem may be internally consistent comparison between different art products is meaningless except by way of the individual artists. On the other hand modern Biological Systematics - particularly phenetics and cladistics - is offered as objective and ultimately governed by universal laws. This implies that classifications of different groups of organisms, being the products of systematics, should be comparable irrespective of authorship. Throughout this book Minelli justifies his title by developing the theme that biological classifications are, in fact, very unequal in their expressions of the pattern and processes of the natural world. Specialists are imbibed with their own groups and tend to establish a consensus of what constitutes a species or a genus, or whether it should be desirable to recognize sub species, cultivars etc. Ornithologists freely recognize subspecies and rarely do bird genera contain more than 10 species. On the other hand some coleopterists and botanists work with genera with over 1500 species. This asymmetry may reflect a biological reality; it may express a working practicality, or simply an historical artefact (older erected genera often contain more species). Rarely are these phenomena questioned. Erscheinungsdatum: 30.09.1994

Biological Systematics : Principles and Applications
Randall T. Schuh & Andrew van Zandt Brower
Cornell Univercity Press, 2009 Mar
Biological Systematics: Principles and Applications draws equally from examples in botany and zoology to provide a modern account of cladistic principles and techniques. It is a core systematics textbook with a focus on parsimony-based approaches for students and biologists interested in systematics and comparative biology. In this new and thoroughly revised edition, Randall T. Schuh and Andrew V. Z. Brower cover a wide range of topics: the history and philosophy of systematics and nomenclature; the mechanics and methods of analysis and evaluation of results; the practical applications of results and wider relevance within biological classification, biogeography, adaptation and coevolution, biodiversity, and conservation; and new software applications.Updated to reflect the exponential growth in the use of DNA sequence data in systematics, the second edition of Biological Systematics features new data techniques and a notable increase in the number of examples from molecular systematics that will be of interest to students increasingly involved in molecular and genetic work.ISBN : 9780801447990

The development of biological systematics : Antoine-Laurent de Jussieu, nature, and the natural system
Peter Francis Stevens
Columbia University Press, 0, PS, 1994

A reevaluation of the history of biological systematics that discusses the formative years of the so-called natural system of classification in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Shows how classifications came to be treated as conventions; systematic practice was not linked to clearly articulated theory; there was general confusion over the "shape" of nature; botany, elements of natural history, and systematics were conflated; and systematics took a position near the bottom of the hierarchy of sciences.

Columbia University Press

Biological systematics : the state of the art
Alessandro Minelli
Chapman and Hall, 1st ed., London, New York, England, 1993
Biological Systematics provides a critical overview of the state of the art in biological systematics and presents a broad perspective of the subject, covering its history, theory and practice. The most improtant current theoretical issues are reviewed with the emphasis on the species concept, the methodology of phylogenetic reconstruction and contrasting views on the relationships between phylogenetics and systematics. A large part of the book is devoted to a review of the current state of taxonomy of the main groups, concluding with a discussion of evolutionary patterns.

Biological Systematics: History and Theory
Igor Ya. Pavlinov
CRC Press, Species and Systematics, 1, 2021
This volume reviews the historical roots and theoretical foundations of biological systematics in an approachable text. The author outlines the structure and main tasks of systematics. Conceptual history is characterized as a succession of scientific revolutions. The philosophical foundations of systematic research are briefly reviewed as well as the structure and content of taxonomic theories. Most important research programs in systematics are outlined. The book includes analysis of the principal problematic issues as "scientific puzzles" in systematics. This volume is intended for professional taxonomists, biologists of various specialties, students, as well as all those interested in the history and theory of biology and natural sciences. Key Features * Considers the conceptual history of systematics as the framework of evolutionary epistemology * Builds a hierarchically organized quasi-axiomatic system of taxonomic theory * Contends that more reductionist taxonomic concepts are less objective * Supports taxonomic pluralism by non-classic philosophy of science as a normal condition of systematics * Documents that "taxonomic puzzles" result from conflict between monistic and pluralistic attitudes Related Titles de Queiroz, K. et al., eds. __Phylonyms: A Companion to the PhyloCode__ (ISBN 978-1-1383-3293-5) Sigwart, J. Biological systematics : the state of the art
Alessandro Minelli
Springer, 1st ed., London, New York, England, 1993
"Biological Systematics" provides a critical overview of the state of the art in biological systematics and presents a broad perspective of the subject, covering its history, theory and practice.

Biological Systematics: History and Theory (Species and Systematics)
Igor Ya Pavlinov; ProQuest (Firme)
Florida : CRC press, Taylor & Francis group, Species and systematics, First edition, Boca Raton ; London ; New York, 2021
Basic questions in paleontology : geologic time, organic evolution, and biological systematics
Otto H. Schindewolf; translated by Judith Schaefer; edited and with an afterword by Wolf-Ernst Reif; with a foreword by Stephen Jay Gould.
Chicago: University of Chicago Press, Chicago, London, England, 1993

Now available in English for the first time, Basic Questions in Paleontology is a landmark work in twentieth-century evolution and paleontology. Originally published in German in 1950, Schindewolf's book was highly controversial for its thoroughgoing anti-Darwinism, but today his ideas are remarkably relevant to current research in evolutionary biology.

[This book] would rank number one on my list of items awaiting translation from the history of twentieth-century evolutionary theory.—Stephen Jay Gould

Booknews

English translation of a 1950 text on paleontology by the influential German paleontologist, Otto Schindewolf. Schindewolf's anti-Darwin arguments of catastrophic events and mass extinction drew some scorn from neo-Darwinian evolutionists who stressed gradual change over time. Current research, however, suggests Schindewolf had a point. Thoughtfully introduced by Stephen Jay Gould, this controversial volume should rekindle the fires of debate. Annotation c. The development of biological systematics : Antoine-Laurent de Jussieu, nature, and the natural system
Peter Francis Stevens
New York: Columbia University Press, New York, New York State, 1994

A reevaluation of the history of biological systematics that discusses the formative years of the so-called natural system of classification in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Shows how classifications came to be treated as conventions; systematic practice was not linked to clearly articulated theory; there was general confusion over the "shape" of nature; botany, elements of natural history, and systematics were conflated; and systematics took a position near the bottom of the hierarchy of sciences.

Columbia University Press

Taxonomic nomenclature : what's in a name : history and theory
Igor Ya Pavlinov; Igorʹ I︠A︡kovlevich Pavlinov
Florida : CRC press, Taylor & Francis group, CRC Press (Unlimited), Boca Raton, FL, 2021
This book suggests an in-depth look at nomenclature in systematics instead of providing another "instruction for use" of various Codes of nomenclature. The focus is on ideas of what taxonomic nomenclature is as a part of the professional language of systematics considered in its full historical and conceptual scope. Basic concepts of nomenclature are outlined, and their development characterized; a hierarchy of fundamental principles of nomenclature are summarized; and the relationship between taxonomic nomenclature and taxonomic theory discussed. This book is addressed to those who would like to go beyond the boundaries of existing Codes to look at the subject from a more general, mostly theoretical standpoint. Key Features - Provides a review of the role of nomenclature in systematics - Reviews the conceptual scope and historical contexts of nomenclature - Analyzes fundamental principles of nomenclature - Outlines the historical development of nomenclature - Reviews the rules of nomenclature in botany, zoology, microbiology, and horticulture Related Titles Mishler, B. Nontarget Effects of Biological Control
L. E. Ehler (auth.), Peter A. Follett, Jian J. Duan (eds.)
Springer US : Imprint : Springer, 1st ed. 2000, New York, NY, 2000
__Nontarget Effects of Biological Control__ is the first book of its kind. The environmental safety of biological control has come under scrutiny due to several areas of concerns: the irreversibility of alien introductions, the prevalence of host switching to innocuous native or beneficial species, dispersal of the biocontrol agent to new habitats away from croplands, and the lack of research on the efficacy and impact of biocontrol attempts. The debate has been strongly polarized between conservationists and biological control practitioners. __Nontarget Effects of Biological Control__ proposes that retrospective analyses of systems in place in which nontarget effects are now documented or suspected provide the necessary information for planning and evaluating future releases to reduce risk. The book presents case histories of past biological control introductions from island and continental ecosystems.

Telling the Evolutionary Time: Molecular Clocks and the Fossil Record (The Systematics Association special volume series)
Philip C. J. Donoghue, M. Paul Smith
CRC Press I Llc, Systematics Association Special Volumes, Baton Rouge, 2003
Understanding the timing of major evolutionary events is important, not only in itself, but critical also to our understanding of the tempo and implied mechanism of evolutionary change. Molecular clock analyses indicate that many major groups are twice as old, or more, than a literal reading of the fossil record indicates. This has led to the suggestion that special mechanisms of evolutionary change must operate in the establishment of such groups and, by implication, the fossil record records only the latter half of evolutionary history. Despite considerable introspection few paleontologists are prepared to agree that the fossil record is so incomplete, arguing instead that our understanding of the 'molecular clock' is far from complete. This book represents a discussion between molecular biologists and paleontologists, in which they investigate the significance of competing sources of data, explain the nature of molecular clocks and the fossil record, and attempt to develop compromise models that incorporate conflicting opinions. These are presented as a series of case studies dealing with many of the most important groups of complex organisms.Research scientists and advanced undergraduates across the field of evolutionary biology will find Telling Evolutionary Time: Molecular Clocks and Fossil Record a stimulating volume, bringing new insight and perspective to a thorny debate.

Biological Consequences of Plate Tectonics: New Perspectives on Post-Gondwana Break-up–A Tribute to Ashok Sahni (Vertebrate Paleobiology and Paleoanthropology)
Guntupalli V.R Prasad; Rajeev Patnaik; SpringerLink (Online service)
Springer International Publishing : Imprint: Springer, Vertebrate Paleobiology and Paleoanthropology, Vertebrate Paleobiology and Paleoanthropology, 1, 2020
This book recognizes and celebrates the contributions of Professor Ashok Sahni to the field of paleontology. Prof. Sahni established a School of Vertebrate Palaeontology at Panjab University, Chandigarh, India, where he trained many of today’s vertebrate paleontologists of India. The book covers topics on evolutionary patterns, macroevolutionary events, origination and radiation events, changes in physical environments & climate and their implications for biodiversity dynamics, intercontinental affinities and biogeographic connections in a plate tectonic framework. The book begins by exploring India in the age of the dinosaurs, discussing new fossil remains from the Jurassic Era, then moves through the Cretaceous and Eocene to provide a picture on faunal and floral changes in Gondwanaland in the context of plate tectonics. Furthermore, the book explores the evolutionary patterns and biotic dispersals that resulted from the northward drift of Indian plate during the Cretaceous and its collision with Asia in the Eocene. The respective chapters reveal the role of plate tectonics and climate in shaping the geographical distribution of plants and animals in Gondwana, specifically in India, as well as the post-India/Asia collision implications for biodiversity changes and biogeography in the region’s continental environments. Given its scope, the book will appeal to vertebrate paleontologists, evolutionary biologists, and paleobiogeographers.

Biocontrol Potential and Its Exploitation in Sustainable Agriculture : Volume 2: Insect Pests
T. C. Narendran (auth.), R. K. Upadhyay, K. G. Mukerji, B. P. Chamola (eds.)
Springer Science + Business Media, LLC, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2001, 2012-10-28
Plant based Biotechnology has come to represent a means of mitigating the problems of global food security in the twenty first century. Products and processes in agriculture are increasingly becoming linked to science and cutting edge technology, to enable the engineering of what are in effect, designer plants. One of the most successful, non chemical approaches to pest management and disease control, which seeks a solution in terms of using living organisms to regulate the incidence of pests and and pathogens, providing a `natural control' while still maintaining the biological balance with the ecosystem. This volume, describes the various biological agents used to control insect pests of a variety of crops. Readers may also be interested in __Volume 1: Crop diseases, Weeds and Nematodes__, published in December 2000, ISBN 0-306-46460-8.

Solanaceae and convolvulaceae : secondary metabolites : biosynthesis, chemotaxonomy, biological and economic significance : (a handbook)
Eich, Eckart.
Springer Spektrum. in Springer-Verlag GmbH, A Handbook, 1, 2008
1. 1 Philosophy and Aims of this Book 1. 1. 1 The Large Solanales Families as a Topic Solanales are from the Mid-Cretaceous (stem node age: 106 my; crown node age: 100 my) (Bremer et al. 2004). Solanaceae and Convolvulaceae are sisters represe- ing the two large families of this order. Their last common ancestor lived about 70 my ago (Durbin et al. 2000). The main objective of the author is to focus on aspects of our extensive knowledge of secondary metabolites in the plant kingdom in order to account for the specific competitiveness and productivity of these two large Solanales families. To this end, it has been necessary to take a bird’s-eye view of 200 years of phytochemical research on the Solanales, since first scientific reports with regard to both families were published in the early nineteenth century. Due to an almost complete lack of phytochemical reports (one single exception) on species of the three remaining, very small families of the order (see Chap. 2), they have not been considered. 1. 1. 2 General Role of the Secondary Metabolism for a Specific Characterization and Classification of Plant Taxa While traditional systematics generally focused on morphologic-anatomical char- ters of plants, in some cases chemotaxonomic aspects with regard to low molecular secondary metabolites were also considered. However, plant biochemistry and chemotaxonomy normally played a minor role in classification.

International advances in the ecology, zoogeography, and systematics of mayflies and stoneflies : [proceeding of the 2004 international joint meeting, XI International Conference on Ephemeroptera, XV International Symposium on Plecoptera, 22-29 August 2004
F. Richard Hauer, Robert L. Newell, Jack Arthur Stanford (eds.)
University of California Press, University of California publications in entomology, v. 128, Berkeley, ©2008
The purpose of this volume is to encourage and facilitate focused research and provide a forum for scholarly exchange about the status of Mayfly and Stonefly science. Professor John Brittain, whose research is focused on freshwater entomology, especially egg development and life cycle strategies of Ephemeroptera and Plecoptera, presents a chapter reflecting on the quality of mayflies as good indicators of global warming and the quality of streams and lakes. Professor Emeritus Andrew Sheldon, whose interests have encompassed community and population ecology of aquatic animals over a span of more than 40 years, especially insects and fishes, explores topics of Scale and Hierarchy and the Ecology of Plecoptera, discussing how studies emphasizing scale and perspective reveal importance of stoneflies to ecosystems. Other topics cover a broad base of disciplines including morphology, physiology, phylogeny, taxonomy, ecology and conservation. The chapters have been compiled into three sections for this volume: Ecology, Zoogeography and Systematics.

Techniques in Molecular Systematics and Evolution (Studies in Rhetoric and Communication (Paperback))
edited by Rob DeSalle, Gonzalo Giribet, Ward Wheeler
Birkhäuser; Birkhäuser Basel, Springer Nature, Basel, 2013
The amount of information that can be obtained by using molecular techniques in evolution, systematics and ecology has increased exponentially over the last ten years. The need for more rapid and efficient methods of data acquisition and analysis is growing accordingly. This manual presents some of the most important techniques for data acquisition developed over the last years. The choice and justification of data analysis techniques is also an important and critical aspect of modern phylogenetic and evolutionary analysis and so a considerable part of this volume addresses this important subject. The book is mainly written for students and researchers from evolutionary biology in search for methods to acquire data, but also from molecular biology who might be looking for information on how data are analyzed in an evolutionary context. To aid the user, information on web-located sites is included wherever possible. Approaches that will push the amount of information which systematics will gather in the Erscheinungsdatum: 01.04.2002

Origins of Biogeography: The role of biological classification in early plant and animal geography (History, Philosophy and Theory of the Life Sciences Book 13)
Malte Christian Ebach (auth.)
Springer Netherlands, Imprint Springer. Springer Netherlands ; Imprint Springer, History, Philosophy and Theory of the Life Sciences, History, Philosophy and Theory of the Life Sciences 13, 1, 2015
This book presents a revised history of early biogeography and investigates the split in taxonomic practice, between the classification of taxa and the classification of vegetation. It moves beyond the traditional belief that biogeography is born from a synthesis of Darwin and Wallace and focuses on the important pioneering work of earlier practitioners such as Zimmermann, Stromeyer, de Candolle and Humboldt. Tracing the academic history of biogeography over the decades and centuries, this book recounts the early schisms in phyto and zoogeography, the shedding of its bonds to taxonomy, its adoption of an ecological framework and its beginnings at the dawn of the 20th century. This book assesses the contributions of key figures such as Zimmermann, Humboldt and Wallace and reminds us of the forgotten influence of plant and animal geographers including Stromeyer, Prichard and de Candolle, whose early attempts at classifying animal and plant geography would inform later progress. The Origins of Biogeography is a science historiography aimed at biogeographers, who have little access to a detailed history of the practices of early plant and animal geographers. This book will also reveal how biological classification has shaped 18 th and 19 th century plant and animal geography and why it is relevant to the 21 st bio geographer.
