This open-end treatise on methods concerning protein separation had its beginning in an American Chemical Society symposium entitled "Con­ temporary Protein Separation Methods" which was held in Atlantic City, New Jersey in September 1974. The purpose of the symposium-and subse­ quently of the present work-was to review the available modern techniques and underlying principles for achieving one of the very important tasks of experimental biology, namely the separation and characterization of proteins present in complex biological mixtures. Physicochemical characterization was covered only as related to the parent method of fractionation and there­ fore involved mostly mass transport processes. Additionally, the presentation of methods for gaini. ng insight into complex interacting protein profiles was considered of paramount importance in the interpretation of separation patterns. Finally, specific categories of proteins (e. g. , chemically modified, deriving from a specific tissue, conjugated to different moieties, etc. ) require meticulous trial and selection andjor modification of existing methodology to carry out the desired separation. In such cases, the gained experience provides valuable guidelines for further experimentation. Although powerful techniques exist today for the separation and related physicochemical characterization of proteins, many biological fractionation problems require further innovations. It is hoped that the description in the present treatise of some of the available separation tools and their limitations will provide the necessary integrated background for new developments in this area.

Los amados muertos (The loved dead) es un relato de terror del escritor norteamericano Howard Phillip Lovecraft, escrito en 1923 con la colaboración de C.M. Eddy. A pesar de no ser una de las mejores producciones de Lovecraft, Los amados muertos es un relato destacable, especialmente en su narrativa, mucho menos densa y barroca de lo habitual. Quizás esta moderación en las formas fue producto de Eddy, aunque en los momentos centrales del cuento se puede intuir la mano inconfundible del genio de Providence.La publicación de Los amados muertos trajo grandes polémicas debido a narrar la historia de un asesino en serie con características sádicas y necrofílicas. Además la narración de algunas escenas de afición hacia los muertos como la que encuentran al protagonista acostado con un cadáver desnudo, llevó a que la obra incluso llegara a prohibirse, no obstante esto pudo haber sido por tratar un tabú casi prohibido en la sociedad norteaméricana de aquella época lo que llevó a parte de la población, la gran mayoría padres, a no considerarla apta para sus hijos. Esta historia comienza con el personaje principal, cuyo nombre no es revelado en la historia, que aparentemente su suerte es la de estar condenado al encierro por su afición hacia lo muerto, según él mismo dice. Luego comienza a contar la historia de su vida y el porqué de la situación en que se encuentra, donde se da a conocer como era de niño, adolescente y luego adulto. En todas estas etapas se observa una persona fría, sin intereses comunes al resto de los demás pues en su niñez no le interesaba jugar con los otros niños, ni hacer amigos en este y posteriores cursos de su vida por lo que empieza a poseer tendencias hacia el aislamiento desde temprana edad. Su vida infantil según dice, se desarrolló en Fenham y fue marcada por trágicos sucesos, la muerte de su abuelo, madre y padre respectivamente todos estos a edad temprana y es con estos hechos que comienza su verdadera afición hacia la muerte, llegando a sentir un amor óptimo hacia los muertos y todo lo relacionado con la muerte ya fuese olor, cementerios, paisajes macabros entre otras cosas, desarrollando una avanzada necrofilia. Esto lo lleva a trabajar como empleado de una compañía de pompas fúnebres situada en Bayboro, un pueblo ubicado a 50 km de Fenham. En Bayboro comete disímiles asesinatos que le provocaban cierto placer, después se ve obligado a irse cuando el jefe de la compañía lo descubre durmiendo con un cadáver completamente desnudo, después de esto participa en la primera guerra mundial, y luego vuelve a donde había trabajado antes ya que el jefe de la compañía había muerto. En este punto comienza a matar de nuevo, pero se vuelve más descuidado por lo que es descubierto y se ve obligado a huir pero en su fuga estrangula a una familia, lo que da la prueba definitiva, sus huellas dactilares en el cuello de sus más recientes víctimas, después de tanto correr por un pantano cerca de su comunidad natal, pasando hambre, sed y con su aprensión cerca decide unirse con los muertos que tanto ama, por lo que se suicida cortándose las venas con su cuchilla de afeitar.

Eran aproximadamente las doce de la noche cuando Henry Bond, con un gesto sombrío y una laxitud de nervios tremenda, se entregaba a la tarea de cerrar la cantina, mientras Odile, su mujer, no menos tensa que él, recogía el servicio y se disponía a ponerlo en orden. La cantina estaba situada a no mucha distancia de la estación de Santa Rosa, en el estado de Nuevo México. El lugar, si no muy importante en vecindario, si lo era en su sistema ferroviario, ya que en dicho poblado se cruzaban cuatro líneas muy importantes, pues desde allí se podía viajar a cualquier ciudad del Estado, porque los cuatro ramales que partían de allí formaban una estrella de cuatro puntas diagonales, estratégicamente situadas. El poblado más importante y más próximo a Santa Rosa era Tucumcary, pero lo mismo se podía ir desde allí a Las Vegas, Santa Fe, Alburquerque, Roswell, que a las diversas divisorias.

Publicado en 1977 es su segundo libro. ¿Se lo decimos al presidente?, que trataba sobre el intento de asesinato de un hipotético presidente norteamericano llamado Ted Kennedy desató la ira de Jackie Onassis, su editora norteamericana en Viking Press, Archer logró que la viuda de Kennedy renunciara a la editorial mientras su libro entraba en imprenta sin que le cambiara una coma. Estados Unidos había visto caer asesinados a dos Kennedy, y dentro de siete días moriría el tercero si no se descubría antes a los conspiradores. No quedaban más que dos soluciones: encontrar a los culpables, o encerrar al Presidente en la Casa Blanca hasta el fin de su mandato. Todo lo demás era inútil.
