This book is devoted to nonlocal theory of nonlinear oscillations. The frequency methods of investigating problems of cycle existence in multidimensional analogues of Van der Pol equation, in dynamical systems with cylindrical phase space and dynamical systems satisfying Routh-Hurwitz generalized conditions are systematically presented here for the first time. To solve these problems methods of Poincaré map construction, frequency methods, synthesis of Lyapunov direct methods and bifurcation theory elements are applied. V.M. Popov's method is employed for obtaining frequency criteria, which estimate period of oscillations. Also, an approach to investigate the stability of cycles based on the ideas of Zhukovsky, Borg, Hartmann, and Olech is presented, and the effects appearing when bounded trajectories are unstable are discussed. For chaotic oscillations theorems on localizations of attractors are given. The upper estimates of Hausdorff measure and dimension of attractors generalizing Doudy-Oesterle and Smith theorems are obtained, illustrated by the example of a Lorenz system and its different generalizations. The analytical apparatus developed in the book is applied to the analysis of oscillation of various control systems, pendulum-like systems and those of synchronization. Audience: This volume will be of interest to those whose work involves Fourier analysis, global analysis, and analysis on manifolds, as well as mathematics of physics and mechanics in general. A background in linear algebra and differential equations is assumed.

In the field known as "the mathematical theory of shock waves," very exciting and unexpected developments have occurred in the last few years. Joel Smoller and Blake Temple have established classes of shock wave solutions to the Einstein Euler equations of general relativity; indeed, the mathematical and physical con sequences of these examples constitute a whole new area of research. The stability theory of "viscous" shock waves has received a new, geometric perspective due to the work of Kevin Zumbrun and collaborators, which offers a spectral approach to systems. Due to the intersection of point and essential spectrum, such an ap proach had for a long time seemed out of reach. The stability problem for "in viscid" shock waves has been given a novel, clear and concise treatment by Guy Metivier and coworkers through the use of paradifferential calculus. The L 1 semi group theory for systems of conservation laws, itself still a recent development, has been considerably condensed by the introduction of new distance functionals through Tai-Ping Liu and collaborators; these functionals compare solutions to different data by direct reference to their wave structure. The fundamental prop erties of systems with relaxation have found a systematic description through the papers of Wen-An Yong; for shock waves, this means a first general theorem on the existence of corresponding profiles. The electronic properties of normal metals have been under active study for several decades. In the 1950s and 1960s most investigations sought to describe the Fermi surfaces of metals. These studies were based on experimental data obtained as a re sult of numerous observations of particular phenomena responsive to the structure of the electronic spectra of metals and thus to band-structure calculations [lJ. The high-frequency properties of metals were also actively studied. These investiga tions were initiated by the development of the theory of the anomalous skin effect [2J. Later, significant achievements were reached in studies of the high-frequency properties of metals in the presence of an applied magnetic field. Cyclotron res onance in a parallel magnetic field [3], electromagnetic waves in metals [4]-[6J, size effects [7J, [8], Doppler shifted cyclotron resonance, and dopplerons [9], [10] were predicted in theoretical studies and repeatedly observed in experiments. This offered new scope for analysis of the properties of the electron system of metals. The main results of theoretical and experimental studies of the electronic charac teristics of metals performed during this period are expounded in several books and review articles (see, e. g. , [11]-[14], [16]). Great progress was also achieved in studies of the interaction between an elec tron system and the ultrasonic waves propagating in metals. At low temperatures (T < 10 K) the electrons produce a strong effect on the dispersion and attenuation of ultrasound waves. Erscheinungsdatum: 31.10.2012
