Reframing Institutional Logics : Substance, Practice and History Mutch, Alistair; Taylor & Francis (CAM), Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), New York, 2019
"How are we to characterise the context in which organisations operate? The notion that organisational activity is shaped by institutional logics has been influential but it presents a number of problems. The criteria by which institutions are identified, the conflation of institutions with organisations, the enduring nature of those institutions and an exaggerated focus on change are all concerns that existing perspectives do not tackle adequately. This book uses the resources of historical work to suggest new ways of looking at institutional logics. It builds on the work of Roger Friedland who has conceived of institutional logics being animated by adherence to a core substance that is immanent in practices. Development of this idea in the context of organisation theory is supported by ideas drawn from the work of the social theorist Margaret Archer and the broader resources of the philosophical tradition of critical realism. Institutions are seen to emerge over time from the embodied relations of humans to each other and to the natural world on which they depend for material existence. Once emergent, institutions develop their own logics and endure to form the context in which agents are involuntarily placed and that conditions their activity. The approach adopted offers resources to 'bring society back in' to the study of organisations. The book will appeal to graduate students who are engaging with institutional theory in their research. While she situates her work in relation to recent concepts of literary influence, West is focused less on the psychology of the poets than on the poetry itself. She explores how elements such as the development of imagery and the choice of poetic form, often learnt from earlier poets, are intimately related to poetic purpose. Thus on one level, her book explores how the second-generation Romantic poets reacted to the beliefs and ideals of the first, while on another it addresses the larger question of how poets become poets, by returning the work of one writer to the literary context from which it developed. Her book is essential reading for specialists in the Romantic period and for scholars interested in theories of poetic influence.</p>

In early November 1976 a workshop on the Philosophy of Wilfrid Sellars was held at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacks burg, Virginia. Sponsored by the Department of Philosophy and Religion, the College of Arts and Sciences and the Research Division of the University and organized by Professor Joseph C. Pitt, its aim was to provide a forum in which views of Professor Sellars could be discussed by a group of scholars fully acquainted with this work. Aside from the twelve invited participants, the workshop was attended by interested parties from as far away as Canada. The papers contained in the volume rep resent the results of the discussions held that weekend. With two excep tions the contents are extensively rewritten and revised versions of infor mal talks and presentations. (Rosenberg's paper is here in its original complete version. Rottschaefer was unable to attend. ) This collection is not then the proceedings but the final product derived from work initiated that weekend. The papers reftect both the spirit of the workshop and the work of Professor Sellars in that they represent the fruits of an intense and multi-faceted dialogue. Professor Sellar~' presence and whole hearted participation left us all with more than enough food for thought and a deepened appreciation of both the man and his philosophy. Einführung Bewerber antworten in Vorstellungsgesprächen nicht einfach spontan und unreflektiert. Die Antworten werden oftmals überlegt und taktisch gegeben. Diese Tendenz verstärkt sich durch die inflationär anwachsende Zahl von Ratgebern für Bewerber. Man muss davon ausgehen, dass so gut wie jeder qualifizierte Bewerber vorbereitet zum Vorstellungsgespräch kommt. Wie sinnvoll und realitätsangemessen diese Form der Vorbereitung ist, ist dabei eine andere Frage. Die zentrale These dieses Buches lautet: Bewerber verhalten sich in Vorstellungsgesprächen nicht „natürlich“, nicht „spontan“, sie reagieren (bewusst oder unbewusst) nicht so, wie sie sich „normalerweise“ verhalten w- den, sondern in einer mehr oder weniger verzerrten Art und Weise. Das schränkt die Validität des Vorstellungsgespräches stark ein. Die Qualität hängt aber auch stark von der Kompetenz des Interviewers ab. Seitens des Interviewers ist ein solches Gespräch nicht einfach. Oftmals wird man als Interviewer, insbesondere als Fachbereichsvertreter, völlig unvor- reitet mit diesem Thema konfrontiert. Das Vorstellungsgespräch erscheint auf den ersten Blick relativ einfach, man muss sich (anscheinend) nur mit dem Bewerber zusammensetzen und mit ihm reden.
