Developing autonomous agent systems : a practical guide to designing, building, implementing and testing agent systems Michael Winikoff; Lin Padgham John Wiley & Sons, Incorporated, 1, 2004
**Build your own intelligent agent system...**Intelligent agent technology is a tool of modern computer science that can be used to engineer complex computer programmes that behave rationally in dynamic and changing environments. Applications range from small programmes that intelligently search the Web buying and selling goods via electronic commerce, to autonomous space probes. This powerful technology is not widely used, however, as developing intelligent agent software requires high levels of training and skill. The authors of this book have developed and tested a methodology and tools for developing intelligent agent systems. With this methodology (__Prometheus__) developers can start agent-oriented designs and implementations easily from scratch saving valuable time and resources. __Developing Intelligent Agent Systems__ not only answers the questions “what are agents?” and “why are they useful?” but also the crucial question: “how do I design and build intelligent agent systems?” The book covers everything a practitioner needs to know to begin to effectively use this technology - including an introduction to the notion of agents, a description of the concepts involved, and a software engineering methodology. Read on for: * a practical step-by-step introduction to designing and building intelligent agent systems. * a full life-cycle methodology for developing intelligent agent systems covering specification, analysis, design and implementation of agents. * __PDT: Prometheus Design Tool__ – software support for the __Prometheus__ design process. * the example of an electronic bookstore to illustrate the design process throughout the book. Electronic resources including the Prometheus Design Tool (PDT), can be found at: __http://www.cs.rmit.edu.au/agents/prometheus__ This book is aimed at industrial software developers, software engineers and at advanced undergraduate students. It assumes knowledge of basic software engineering but does not require knowledge of Artificial Intelligence or of mathematics. Familiarity with Java will help in reading the examples in chapter 10

Conversational Informatics: An Engineering Approach (Wiley Series in Agent Technology) Nishida, Toyoaki (editor) John Wiley & Sons, Ltd, Wiley Series in Agent Technology, Wiley Series in Agent Technology, 1, 2007
Conversational informatics investigates human behaviour with a view to designing conversational artifacts capable of interacting with humans in a conversational fashion. It spans a broad array of topics including linguistics, psychology and human-computer interaction. Until recently research in such areas has been carried out in isolation, with no attempt made to connect the various disciplines. Advancements in science and technology have changed this. Conversational Informatics provides an interdisciplinary introduction to conversational informatics and places emphasis upon the integration of scientific approaches to achieve engineering goals and to advance further understanding of conversation. It features a collection of surveys structured around four prominent research areas: conversational artifacts, conversational contents, conversation environment design and conversation measurement, analysis and modelling Conversational artifacts shows how synthetic characters or intelligent robots use eye gaze, gestures and other non-verbal communicators to interact. Conversational contents looks at developing techniques for acquiring, editing, distributing and utilising the contents that are produced and consumed in conversation. Conversation environment design explains techniques for creating intelligent virtual environments and for representing individuals within a virtual environment by monitoring and reproducing their non-verbal conversational behaviour. Conversation measurement, analysis and modelling demonstrate how conversational behaviour can be measured and analyzed. Conversational Informatics will be an invaluable resource for postgraduate students and researchers in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering as well as engineers and developers working in the field of automation, robotics and agents technology.Content: Chapter 1 Introduction (pages 1–18): Toyoaki Nishida Chapter 2 Conversational Agents and the Construction of Humorous Acts (pages 19–47): Anton Nijholt Chapter 3 Why Emotions should be Integrated into Conversational Agents (pages 49–67): Christian Becker, Stefan Kopp and Ipke Wachsmuth Chapter 4 More Than Just a Friendly Phrase: Multimodal Aspects of Polite Behavior in Agents (pages 69–84): Matthias Rehm and Elisabeth Andre Chapter 5 Attentional Behaviors as Nonverbal Communicative Signals in Situated Interactions with Conversational Agents (pages 85–102): Yukiko I. Orgueil Et Prejuges (French Edition) traduit de l'anglais par V. Leconte et Ch. Pressoir; préface de Virginia Woolf; note bibliographique par Jacques Roubaud Christian Bourgois Éditeur, Domaine Etranger, N° 1505, Paris, France, France, 1996
Pride and Prejudice is an 1813 novel of manners written by Jane Austen. The novel follows the character development of Elizabeth Bennet, the dynamic protagonist of the book who learns about the repercussions of hasty judgments and comes to appreciate the difference between superficial goodness and actual goodness. Mr. Bennet, owner of the Longbourn estate in Hertfordshire, has five daughters, but his property is entailed and can only be passed to a male heir. His wife also lacks an inheritance, so his family faces becoming very poor upon his death. Thus, it is imperative that at least one of the girls marry well to support the others, which is a motivation that drives the plot.

Treasure Island (Everyman's Library Children's Classics) Robert Louis Stevenson; Mervyn Peake London: Everyman's Library Children's Classics, Everyman's Library Children's Classics Series, New ed, London, c1992
Traditionally considered a coming-of-age story, Treasure Island is an adventure tale known for its atmosphere, characters and action, and also as a wry commentary on the ambiguity of morality — as seen in Long John Silver — unusual for children's literature then and now. It is one of the most frequently dramatized of all novels. The influence of Treasure Island on popular perceptions of pirates is enormous, including treasure maps marked with an "X", schooners, the Black Spot, tropical islands, and one-legged seamen carrying parrots on their shoulders

Don Quijote De La Mancha / Don Quixote Man of La Mancha (Coleccion Libros de Bolsillo) Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra Editorial Juventud, S.A., Clásicos, 17th ed, Barcelona, ©2003
---------- *The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha* known simply as *Don Quixote* is a Spanish novel by Miguel de Cervantes, originally published in two parts, in 1605 and 1615 and considered a founding work of Western literature. It's often said to be the first modern novel. The novel has been labelled by many well-known authors as the "best novel of all time" and the "best and most central work in world literature". Don Quixote is also one of the most-translated books in the world and one of the best-selling novels of all time.

Wuthering Heights Bronte˜, Emily, 1818-1848 Alfred A. Knopf/Everyman's Library, Editions vary, New York, 1991, 1847
One of the most powerful and original novels of English literature, Wuthering Heights is more than just a story of lbve. It is a story of grand passion, of devotion, and of retribution. It is the story of two families of the Yorkshire moors and the adopted foundling, named Heathcliff, who one day lands among them. Heathcliff, a darkly handsome boy of fiery temperament, is raised among the windblown moors of Wuthering Heights by a family farmers, the Earnshaws. Heathcliff quickly becomes a favorite of Mr. Earnshaw, inciting the jealousy of his son, Hindley Earnshaw. The younger Earnshaw's cruelty will in turn spark a lifelong vow of vengeance from the intense, feral Heathcliff. At Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff also meets the beautiful, spirit- ed Catherine Earnshaw. From mischievous childhood playmates, the two grow to recognize that they are soul mates, but theirs is not an easy love. Their twinned tempestuous natures prove t(X) explosive for a conventional happy ending. Their fractious bond forms the seed of this remarkable work of imagination. Some 150 years after Wuthering Heights was first published, its power and rough beauty still fascinate readers. Its exploration of both the radiant and darker flames of human passion still rings true. Emily Bronté (1818-1848) was born in Yorkshire, England, the fifth child of an Irish clergyman and a mother who died of cancer when Emily was three. After two daughters died at boarding school, their father brought Emily and Charlotte home. The three Bronté sisters turned to novel writing, but Emily's Wuthering Heights initially failed to gain an audience. She died at the age of thirty without seeing the success of her book. --back cover

Die Abenteuer des Tom Sawyer. Mark Twain. Mit einem Nachw. von Sybil Gräfin Schönfeldt Cecilie Dressler Verlag, Dressler-Klassiker, Neuausg, Hamburg, 2002
Mark Twain created the memorable characters Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn drawing from the experiences of boys he grew up with in Missouri. Set by the Mississippi River in the 1840's, it follows these boys as they get into predicament after predicament. Tom's classic whitewashing of the fence has become part of American legend, and the book paints a nostalgic picture of life in the middle of the nineteenth century. Tom runs away from home to an island in the river, chases Injun Joe and his treasure, and even gets trapped in a cave for days with Becky Thatcher. The book is one of Twain's most beloved stories.

Adventures of Don Quixote de la Mancha Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra New York, Dodd, Mead & co., New York, Unknown, 1962
---------- *The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha* known simply as *Don Quixote* is a Spanish novel by Miguel de Cervantes, originally published in two parts, in 1605 and 1615 and considered a founding work of Western literature.
