Beijing, 2011
Annotation Millions have seen the movie and thousands have read the book but few have fully appreciated the mathematics developed by John Nash's beautiful mind. Today Nash's beautiful math has become a universal language for research in the social sciences and has infiltrated the realms of evolutionary biology, neuroscience, and even quantum physics. John Nash won the 1994 Nobel Prize in economics for pioneering research published in the 1950s on a new branch of mathematics known as game theory. At the time of Nash's early work, game theory was briefly popular among some mathematicians and Cold War analysts. But it remained obscure until the 1970s when evolutionary biologists began applying it to their work. In the 1980s economists began to embrace game theory. Since then it has found an ever expanding repertoire of applications among a wide range of scientific disciplines. Today neuroscientists peer into game players' brains, anthropologists play games with people from primitive cultures, biologists use games to explain the evolution of human language, and mathematicians exploit games to better understand social networks. A common thread connecting much of this research is its relevance to the ancient quest for a science of human social behavior, or "a Code of Nature," in the spirit of the fictional science of psychohistory described in the famous Foundation novels by the late Isaac Asimov. In A Beautiful Math, acclaimed science writer Tom Siegfried describes how game theory links the life sciences, social sciences, and physical sciences in a way that may bring Asimov's dream closer to reality

zlib/Technique/Oil and Gas Technologies/National Academies of Sciences Engineering and Medicine/Practices and Standards for Plugging Orphaned and Abandoned Hydrocarbon Wells: Proceedings of a Workshop_118972517.pdf
Practices and Standards for Plugging Orphaned and Abandoned Hydrocarbon Wells: Proceedings of a Workshop National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, Division on Engineering and Physical Sciences, Division on Earth and Life Studies, Board on Infrastructure and the Constructed Environment, Board on Earth Sciences and Resources National Academies Press, 10.17226/28035, 2025
When oil and gas production began in the 19th century in North America, standards and regulations for the drilling and plugging of wells had not yet been developed. Over time, many of these and other wells were abandoned - unplugged, or not plugged to modern standards, and have sat idle for an extended, possibly unknown, period of time.-These wells might not have been originally operated and maintained in accordance with existing statutes and regulations and, due to degradation over time and potential improper prior operations, they can emit methane, contaminate groundwater, and impact ecosystems, creating risks for both the environment and the public.-To explore and share the variety of existing procedures and standards for plugging orphaned and abandoned wells, including current best practices for well-plugging technologies, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a workshop on July 18-19, 2024. -Sponsored by the Department of the Interior's Orphaned Wells Program Office, the workshop included members of the federal government, state leaders, tribal representatives, industry experts, and other affected parties. This proceedings summarizes the presentation and discussion of the workshop.

Progress Toward Restoring the Everglades: The Tenth Biennial Review - 2024 Division on Earth and Life Studies, Water Science and Technology Board, Committee on Independent Scientific Review of Everglades Restoration Progress, National Academies of Sciences Engineering and Medicine, National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, Board on Environmental Studies and Toxicology National Academies Press, 10.17226/27875, 2025
The Florida Everglades is a treasured ecosystem, but the water quality, quantity, flow, and distribution have been dramatically degraded by drainage and infrastructure development during the past century. -A joint effort launched by the State and federal government in 2000, the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP) seeks to reverse the decline of the ecosystem. The National Academies have provided a biennial review of CERP since 2004. This tenth biennial report in the series highlights significant recent restoration progress and offers guidance in three areas: applying Indigenous Knowledge in project planning, using modeling tools for understanding the effects of climate change on the CERP, and strengthening adaptive management for CERP decision making. -Thanks to record state and federal investments in recent years, the pace of restoration implementation has reached historic levels and sizeable restoration benefits have been achieved. However, information on natural system restoration progress relative to CERP expectations continues to be difficult to find and interpret. -The report recommends modeling tools be applied to anticipate the effects of climate change, including temperature and precipitation, on CERP outcomes and to inform planning and management. Moving forward, consistent and meaningful engagement between CERP agencies and tribal nations is necessary to create a partnership where Indigenous Knowledge can be considered and applied in restoration decision-making. -Building expertise and a culture of adaptive management can help ensure continued restoration progress amid uncertainties and improve restoration outcomes through the incorporation of new information.

The United States and the world face serious threats to nuclear stability and peace, now and in the coming decades. Within the nuclear arena, U.S. policy makers will need to make strategic decisions related to nuclear risks to assist with long-term planning as well as responding in real time to unanticipated events. The occurrence of unanticipated nuclear events is expected to increase as more countries develop, expand, or field nuclear energy capability; more countries consider development of nuclear weapon capability and new nuclear weapon states emerge; and nuclear weapon states expand their nuclear arsenals.-At the request of the Department of Defense, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine established and managed the Committee on Risk Analysis Methods for Nuclear War and Nuclear Terrorism to explore U.S. government methods for assessing nuclear war and nuclear terrorism risks and how those assessments are used to develop strategy and policy. This publication is the unclassified Phase 2 version of the final classified report. Risk Analysis Methods for Nuclear War and Nuclear Terrorism: Phase II builds on an earlier Phase I unclassified report. This book expands upon the use of analytical methods to assess the risks of nuclear terrorism and nuclear war and the role such approaches may play in U.S. security strategy.

Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Wildland Fires: Toward Improved Monitoring, Modeling, and Management: Proceedings of a Workshop National Academies of Sciences Engineering and Medicine; Division on Earth and Life Studies; Polar Research Board; Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources; Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate; Committee on Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Wildland Fires Toward Improved Monitoring Modeling and Management?a Workshop National Academies Press, 10.17226/27473, 2024
Climate change is fundamentally changing ecosystems and their fire conditions, and the 2023 fire season highlighted the urgency of developing and implementing solutions to address wildland fires. Wildland fires transfer carbon between the land and the atmosphere through emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs), along with other gasses and particles. Though fires can be a natural part of healthy, evolving ecosystems, large, uncontrolled wildland fires can have devastating consequences to human health, communities, and biodiversity. Human-driven changes in wildland fire regimes have the potential to increase GHG emissions at a scale that could inhibit global efforts to achieve net-zero GHG emissions in the coming decades.-The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a workshop on September 13-15, 2023, to identify opportunities to improve measurements and model projections of GHG emissions from wildland fires and discuss management practices that could be incorporated into current and future action plans. Participants emphasized the importance of learning from historic and current Indigenous fire management practices and centering Indigenous voices and leadership across all stages of fire management. Different global ecosystems - particularly temperate, boreal, and tropical biomes - have been impacted by climate and land use changes where historical fire regimes and the carbon balance have been disrupted.

Nutrient Requirements of Fish and Shrimp National Research Council, Division on Earth and Life Studies, Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources, Committee on the Nutrient Requirements of Fish and Shrimp National Academies Press, Washington, D.C, 2011
Aquaculture now supplies half of the seafood and fisheries products consumed worldwide and is gaining international significance as a source of food and income. Future demands for seafood and fisheries products can only be met by expanded aquaculture production. Such production will likely become more intensive and will depend increasingly on nutritious and efficient aquaculture feeds containing ingredients from sustainable sources. To meet this challenge, Nutrient Requirements of Fish and Shrimp provides a comprehensive summary of current knowledge about nutrient requirements of fish and shrimp and supporting nutritional science. This edition incorporates new material and significant updates to information in the 1993 edition. It also examines the practical aspects of feeding of fish and shrimp. Nutrient Requirements of Fish and Shrimp will be a key resource for everyone involved in aquaculture and for others responsible for the feeding and care of fish and shrimp. It will also aid scientists in developing new and improved approaches to satisfy the demands of the growing aquaculture industry.

Strengthening post-hurricane supply chain resilience : observations from Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, Policy and Global Affairs, Office of Special Projects, Committee on Building Adaptable and Resilient Supply Chains After Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria Washington, D.C.: The National Academies Press, Consensus study report of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, Medicine, Washington, DC, 2020
"Resilient supply chains are crucial to maintaining the consistent delivery of goods and services to the American people. The modern economy has made supply chains more interconnected than ever, while also expanding both their range and fragility. In the third quarter of 2017, Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria revealed some significant vulnerabilities in the national and regional supply chains of Texas, Florida, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. The broad impacts and quick succession of these three hurricanes also shed light on the effectiveness of the nation's disaster logistics efforts during response through recovery. Drawing on lessons learned during the 2017 hurricanes, this report explores future strategies to improve supply chain management in disaster situations. This report makes recommendations to strengthen the roles of continuity planning, partnerships between civic leaders with small businesses, and infrastructure investment to ensure that essential supply chains will remain operational in the next major disaster. Focusing on the supply chains food, fuel, water, pharmaceutical, and medical supplies, the recommendations of this report will assist the Federal Emergency Management Agency as well as state and local officials, private sector decision makers, civic leaders, and others who can help ensure that supply chains remain robust and resilient in the face of natural disasters."-- Publisher's website

Progress Toward Restoring the Everglades: The Eighth Biennial Review - 2020 National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, Division on Earth and Life Studies, Water Science and Technology Board, Committee on Independent Scientific Review of Everglades Restoration Progress, Board on Environmental Studies and Toxicology The National Academies Press, Consensus study report, Washington, DC, 2021
"During the past century, the Everglades, one of the world's treasured ecosystems, has been dramatically altered by drainage and water management infrastructure to improve flood management, urban water supply, and agricultural production. The remnants of the original Everglades now compete for water with urban and agricultural interests and are impaired by contaminated runoff from these two sectors. The Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP), a joint effort launched by the state and the federal government in 2000, seeks to reverse the decline of the ecosystem. The multibillion-dollar project was originally envisioned as a 30- to 40-year effort to achieve ecological restoration by reestablishing the natural hydrologic characteristics of the Everglades, where feasible, and to create a water system that serves the needs of both the natural and the human systems of South Florida. In establishing the CERP, Congress also requested that an independent scientific review be conducted on progress toward restoration with biennial reports. The National Academies' Committee on Independent Scientific Review of Everglades Restoration Progress has provided biennial reviews of restoration progress and advice on scientific and engineering issues that may impact progress since 2004. This eighth study of the series describes substantive accomplishments over the past 2 years and reviews developments in research, monitoring, and assessment that inform restoration decision making. Progress Toward Restoring the Everglades: The Eighth Biennial Review - 2020 also reviews the recently developed Combined Operational Plan, which is a prerequisite for CERP progress in the central Everglades, and examines issues facing the northern and southern estuaries, including priorities for science to support restoration decision making." -- Provided by publisher

The Use of Dispersants in Marine Oil Spill Response National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, Division on Earth and Life Studies, Board on Environmental Studies and Toxicology, Ocean Studies Board, Committee on the Evaluation of the Use of Chemical Dispersants in Oil Spill Response The University of South Carolina Press, Consensus study report, Columbia, South Carolina, 2020
xii, 328 pages : 26 cm "Whether the result of an oil well blowout, vessel collision or grounding, leaking pipeline, or other incident at sea, each marine oil spill will present unique circumstances and challenges. The oil type and properties, location, time of year, duration of spill, water depth, environmental conditions, affected biomes, potential human community impact, and available resources may vary significantly. Also, each spill may be governed by policy guidelines, such as those set forth in the National Response Plan, Regional Response Plans, or Area Contingency Plans. To respond effectively to the specific conditions presented during an oil spill, spill responders have used a variety of response options--including mechanical recovery of oil using skimmers and booms, in situ burning of oil, monitored natural attenuation of oil, and dispersion of oil by chemical dispersants. Because each response method has advantages and disadvantages, it is important to understand specific scenarios where a net benefit may be achieved by using a particular tool or combination of tools. This report builds on two previous National Research Council reports on dispersant use to provide a current understanding of the state of science and to inform future marine oil spill response operations. The response to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon spill included an unprecedented use of dispersants via both surface application and subsea injection. The magnitude of the spill stimulated interest and funding for research on oil spill response, and dispersant use in particular. This study assesses the effects and efficacy of dispersants as an oil spill response tool and evaluates trade-offs associated with dispersant use."-- Includes bibliographical references 1, Introduction -- 2, Fate and transport -- 3, Aquatic toxicology and biological effects -- 4, Human health considerations -- 5, Tools for decision making -- 6, Comparing response options -- 7, Research and decision-making tools -- References -- Appendixes This activity was supported by the American Petroleum Institute (#2016-110715), the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (#M15PC00004/M17PD00027), Clean Caribbean and Americas, the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine's Gulf Research Program, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (#EP-C-14-005, TO# 17). Why Indoor Chemistry Matters (Consensus Study Report) National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine; Division on Earth and Life Studies; Board on Chemical Sciences and Technology; Committee on Emerging Science on Indoor Chemistry The National Academies Press, Consensus study report, Washington, DC, 2022
"People spend the vast majority of their time inside their homes and other indoor environments where they are exposed to a wide range of chemicals from building materials, furnishings, occupants, cooking, consumer products, and other sources. Despite research to date, very little is known about how exposures to indoor chemicals across complex chemical phases and pathways affect human health. The COVID-19 pandemic has only increased public awareness of indoor environments and shed light on the many outstanding questions about how best to manage chemicals indoors. This report identifies gaps in current research and understanding of indoor chemistry and new approaches that can be applied to measure, manage, and limit chemical exposures. Why Indoor Chemistry Matters calls for further research about the chemical transformations that can occur indoors, pathways and timing of indoor chemical exposure, and the cumulative and long-term impacts of exposure on human health. Research priorities should consider factors that contribute to measurable environmental health disparities that affect vulnerable populations, such as the age, location, and condition of buildings that can alter exposures to indoor chemicals"-- Provided by publisher

xv, 409 pages : 23 cm Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), are a set of more than 30 health disorders associated with both the temporomandibular joints and the muscles and tissues of the jaw. TMDs have a range of causes and often co-occur with a number of overlapping medical conditions, including headaches, fibromyalgia, back pain and irritable bowel syndrome. TMDs can be transient or long-lasting and may be associated with problems that range from an occasional click of the jaw to severe chronic pain involving the entire orofacial region. Everyday activities, including eating and talking, are often difficult for people with TMDs, and many of them suffer with severe chronic pain due to this condition. Common social activities that most people take for granted, such as smiling, laughing, and kissing, can become unbearable. This dysfunction and pain, and its associated suffering, take a terrible toll on affected individuals, their families, and their friends. Individuals with TMDs often feel stigmatized and invalidated in their experiences by their family, friends, and, often, the health care community. Misjudgments and a failure to understand the nature and depths of TMDs can have severe consequences -- more pain and more suffering -- for individuals, their families and our society. Temporomandibular Disorders: Priorities for Research and Care calls on a number of stakeholders -- across medicine, dentistry, and other fields -- to improve the health and well-being of individuals with a TMD. This report addresses the current state of knowledge regarding TMD research, education and training, safety and efficacy of clinical treatments of TMDs, and burden and costs associated with TMDs. The recommendations of Temporomandibular Disorders focus on the actions that many organizations and agencies should take to improve TMD research and care and improve the overall health and well-being of individuals with a TMD.-- Includes bibliographical references Intro -- FrontMatter -- Reviewers -- Contents -- Preface -- Summary -- 1 Introduction -- 2 Definitions and Scope: What Are TMDs? -- 3 Individual and Societal Burden of TMDs -- 4 State of the Science on TMDs -- 5 Caring for Individuals with a TMD -- 6 Improving TMD Health Care: Practice, Education, Access, and Coverage -- 7 Improving Patient, Family, and Public Education and Awareness About TMDs -- 8 Next Steps and Recommendations -- Appendix A: Workshop and Open Session Agendas -- Appendix B: Committee Biographical Sketches

Reflecting sunlight : recommendations for solar geoengineering research and research governance National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine; Policy and Global Affairs; Division on Earth and Life Studies; Committee on Science, Technology, and Law; Committee on Developing a Research Agenda and Research Governance Approaches for Climate Intervention Strategies that Reflect Sunlight to Cool Earth; Board on Atmospheric Sciences and Climate The National Academies Press, Consensus study report, Washington, DC, 2021
"Climate change is creating impacts that are widespread and severe for individuals, communities, economies, and ecosystems around the world. While efforts to reduce emissions and adapt to climate impacts are the first line of defense, researchers are exploring other options to reduce warming. Solar geoengineering strategies are designed to cool Earth either by adding small reflective particles to the upper atmosphere, by increasing reflective cloud cover in the lower atmosphere, or by thinning high-altitude clouds that can absorb heat. While such strategies have the potential to reduce global temperatures, they could also introduce an array of unknown or negative consequences. This report concludes that a strategic investment in research is needed to enhance policymakers' understanding of climate response options. The United States should develop a transdisciplinary research program, in collaboration with other nations, to advance understanding of solar geoengineering's technical feasibility and effectiveness, possible impacts on society and the environment, and social dimensions such as public perceptions, political and economic dynamics, and ethical and equity considerations. The program should operate under robust research governance that includes such elements as a research code of conduct, a public registry for research, permitting systems for outdoor experiments, guidance on intellectual property, and inclusive public and stakeholder engagement processes." -- Provided by publisher

Stronger Food and Drug Regulatory Systems Abroad National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine; Health and Medicine Division; Board on Global Health; Committee on Stronger Food and Drug Regulatory Systems Abroad; Catherine E. Woteki; Gillian J. Buckley Washington, DC: National Academies Press, National Academies Press, Washington, DC, 2020
xviii, 224 pages : 23 cm Ensuring the safety of food and the quality and safety of medicines in a country is an important role of government, made more complicated by global manufacturing and international trade. By recent estimates, unsafe food kills over 400,000 people a year, a third of them children under 5, mostly in low- and middle-income countries; every year poor quality medicines cause about 70,000 excess deaths from childhood pneumonia and roughly 8,500 to 20,000 malaria deaths in sub-Saharan Africa alone. The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) Office of Global Policy and Strategy is charged with improving capacity of the agency's foreign counterpart offices and increasing understanding of the importance of regulatory systems for public health, development, and trade. At the request of the FDA, this study sets out a strategy to support good quality, wholesome food and safe, effective medical products around the world. Its goal is to build on the momentum for strengthening regulatory systems and to set a course for sustainability and continued progress. Impacts of public policy on the freight transportation system National Research Council. Transportation Research Board.; National Cooperative Freight Research Program.; Estados Unidos. Department of Transportation. Research and Innovative Technology Administration.; ICF International (Firm); Delcan Corporation.; Cheval Research (Firm) Transportation Research Board of the National Academies, Ncfrp national cooperative freight research program report, Washington, DC, 2011
104 p. : 28 cm "This report describes the numerous ways that government policy decisions can affect the freight system and, in turn, how understanding the differing concerns and priorities of governments is crucial to better consideration of the potential impacts of public policy. Using interviews with industry experts and an extensive review of documents, the research identifies current and recent policy issues with potential freight system impacts, evaluates the magnitude of the impacts, and assesses the extent to which the impacts were unexpected. Among the types of impacts identified were (1) changes in costs and revenues to freight carriers and shippers, (2) changes in freight volumes or shifts in mode, (3) changes in freight service quality, and (4) changes to freight system operations and safety. The research will promote a better understanding at all levels of government of the complex relationships inherent in public policy and foster appreciation for how public policies affect the freight transportation system NCFRP report 6 (revised): "Impacts of Public Policy on the Freight Transportation System" replaces NCFRP Report 6 of the same title, previously distributed. Revisions have been made to two sections of the report, "Truck Size and Weight Rules" in Chapter 4 and "Operations and Maintenance Policy" in Chapter 6."--pub. desc At head of title: National Cooperative Freight Research Program Sponsored by the Research and Innovative Technology Administration Includes bibliographical references (p. 96-101)

State Resources For Financing Transportation Programs (synthesis Of Highway Practice) research sponsored by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration Washington: Transportation Research Board, National Research Council, National cooperative highway research program; Synthesis of highway practice, Washington, 1979
In Recent Years, The States Have Faced A Crisis In The Provision Of Transportation Facilities And Services. Some Of The Reasons For This Crisis Are: A Revenue Base That Is Not Responsive To Inflation; A Relative Slowdown In Motor Fuel Consumption, The Principal Present Source Of Revenue; Soaring Costs; Greater Sensitivity To Social And Political Pressures; And Increasing Demands For Transportation Facilities And Services. Improvements In Motor Vehicle Fuel Efficiency And Conversion To New Energy Sources Will Worsen The Situation. One Of The Strengths Of Current Transportation Financing--the Dedication Of Highway Funds--has Contributed To The Difficulties Many States Are Facing. Dedication Has Tended To Isolate Highway Financing From The Mainstream Of Policy Making, Shielding It From The Attention Of Legislative Bodies And Preventing Revenue Problems From Receiving Early Deliberation And Action. User Charges Are Employed Widely By The States To Defray Highway Costs.^ In Recent Years, This Financing System Has Fallen Prey To Inflation, And States Have Looked More Eagerly To Other Revenue Sources. The Discussion Here Identifies These Potential Revenues And Their Relative Merits And Demerits. The Criteria For Appraising The Quality Of A Tax Structure Include: Equitable Distribution Of The Burden, Minimal Interference With Economic Decisions In Otherwise Efficient Markets, And Efficient And Nonarbitrary Administration. A Diverse State And Local Tax Structure Tends To Minimize Tax Competition Between Jurisdictions. A Combination Of Financing May Be Preferable To Reliance Completely On Either General Tax Subsidy Or Total Benefit Financing. A Judicious Combination Of The Two Methods Might Promote Equity And Minimize Excess Burden. An In- Depth Review Of Both User Financing And General Taxation Has Turned Up No Hidden Revenue Fountain To Rescue States From Difficulties In Providing For Transportation Needs.^ On The Positive Side, No Flaws Were Revealed In Current Methods Of Financing Of Such Nature And Magnitude That Appropriate Revenue Levels Cannot Be Achieved. Revenue Issues Pertain Mainly To The Distribution Of The Burden. What Appears To Be Needed Is An Institutional Framework That Will Facilitate Timely Adjustments In The Revenue Structure. The Many Issues Involved In Transportation Financing Are Complex, And Much Pertinent Information Gathered For This Synthesis Could Not Be Included. The Material Not Included Has Been Published By The University Of California (l), And Readers Desiring A More Detailed Discussion Of This Subject Are Referred Thereto. Research Sponsored By The American Association Of State Highway And Transportation Officials, In Cooperation With The Federal Highway Administration. Includes Bibliographical References.

Factors, Trends, And Guidelines Related To Trip Length (national Cooperative Highway Research Program. Report) [by] Salvatore J. Bellomo, Robert B. Dial, and Alan M. Voorhees [Washington] Highway Research Board, National Research Council, National Cooperative Highway Research Program. Report, 89, Report (National Cooperative Highway Research Program) ;, 89., [Washington], District of Columbia, 1970
Knowledge of the characteristics of trip length is needed to determine future urban travel demands. Trip length changes are analyzed on small geographic parts of metropolitan areas, such as traffic districts. Hypotheses stating the relationship between trip length and influencing factors were formulated and tested. These tests were made through a correlation analysis of changes in the mean trip length and changes in related factors in two medium-sized urban areas (Sioux City, Iowa and Reading, Pennsylvania) of about 100,000 population, one large metropolitan area of about 3,500,000 population (Detroit), and a simulation study of the work trip for a city of about 2,500,000 people

Aging and disability : beyond stereotypes to inclusion : proceedings of a workshop Forum on Aging, Disability, and Independence; Board on Health Sciences Policy; Health and Medicine Division; Division of Behavioral and Social Sciences and Education; National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine The National Academies Press, Washington, DC, 2018
Many different groups of people are subject to stereotypes. Positive stereotypes (e.g., “older and wiserâ€) may provide a benefit to the relevant groups. However, negative stereotypes of aging and of disability continue to persist and, in some cases, remain socially acceptable. Research has shown that when exposed to negative images of aging, older persons demonstrate poor physical and cognitive performance and function, while those who are exposed to positive images of aging (or who have positive self-perceptions of aging) demonstrate better performance and function. Furthermore, an individualâ€TMs expectations about and perceptions of aging can predict future health outcomes. To better understand how stereotypes affect older adults and individuals with disabilities, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, with support from AARP, convened a public workshop on October 10, 2017. This publication summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.

Expanding Biofuel Production: Sustainability and the Transition to Advanced Biofuels: Summary of a Workshop National Research Council, Patricia Koshel, Kathleen Mcallister National Academies Press, Sustainability science and technology, Washington, D.C, 2010
"While energy prices, energy security, and climate change are front and center in the national media, these issues are often framed to the exclusion of the broader issue of sustainability--ensuring that the production and use of biofuels do not compromise the needs of future generations by recognizing the need to protect life-support systems, promote economic growth, and improve societal welfare. Thus, it is important to understand the effects of biofuel production and use on water quality and quantity, soils, wildlife habitat and biodiversity, greenhouse gas emissions, air quality, public health, and the economic viability of rural communities."
