Arts and Science at Toronto : A History, 1827-1990 Brown, Craig University of Toronto Press, 2012 jan 31

The University of Toronto’s Faculty of Arts and Science is older than the university itself. Chartered in 1827 as King’s College, it officially opened in 1843 with four professors and twenty-seven students. In this lively and engaging book, Robert Craig Brown vividly recounts the 150-year history of the faculty’s staff, students, and achievements.

Brown takes readers on a sweeping journey though the development and growth of the faculty through wartime and peace, depression and prosperity. He covers teaching and research in the vast array of subjects offered, administrative and financial concerns, and the Faculty’s significant contributions to higher education in Canada. Throughout, Brown traces how the faculty evolved past its early defining traits of elitism and exclusivity to its current form – a remarkably diverse body with students of all ages, backgrounds, and academic interests.

Freedom and Responsibility in the University : Report of the Presidential Committee on Rights and Responsibilities of Members of York University York York University University of Toronto Press, Scholarly Publishing Division, 1970 dec 31

Under the chairmanship of one of Canada’s most distinguished jurists, this committee has set out an important and universal statement of values relating to the rights of the individual and the university. It abandons the traditional university relationship to the student of in loco parentis, and considers faculty and students alike as "willing individuals, capable of judgement," responsible for their conduct and its consequences. The report considers how these principles may be applied in such areas as activity by staff and students; membership in organized groups; residences; university campus publications; use of university property; university security services; administrative response to disorder and danger of violence; and due process within the university. In today’s atmosphere of protest and response, this report should be standard reference on all campuses.

nexusstc/Founding Moment: Church, Society, and the Construction of Trinity College/d01c85dc05838d3ef7b6103c3b9a5c78.pdf
The founding moment : church, society and the construction of Trinity College William Westfall ACP - McGill Queen's University Press, McGill-Queen's Studies in the History of Religion; 48, 2002
"In The Founding Moment William Westfall details the founding of Trinity College, telling the story of an important group of Anglicans who tried to respond creatively to the powerful social forces reshaping English-speaking Canada in the middle of the nineteenth century. He explores the motives, goals, and social and religious ideas that were behind the creation of this important institution of higher education, explaining the reasons Trinity was founded, the role it played in Canadian society, and the way its founding doctrines were transformed into a functioning college. He also challenges the social and educational views of the founders, giving voice to those who did not share the founders' vision and criticized the course the college was determined to pursue. These dissenting voices help us understand the problems the new college faced and the steps a new generation of leadership would take to point the college in a new direction, and define a very different relationship with the modern world."--Résumé de l'éditeur

Friedland: Notes To the University of Toronto: A History Martin L. Friedland University of Toronto Press, Heritage Ser., 1, 2002

Two histories of the University of Toronto have been published, one in 1906 and one in 1927. Since the latter volume appeared, no comprehensive history of the University has been published. Given the size of the University and the complexity of the task, this is not entirely surprising. But, after sixty-six years, this gap in the intellectual history of Canada has been filled, and we are delighted to announce publication, in March of 2002, of Martin Friedland’s new history of one of Canada’s most important educational and cultural institutions.

The author of several books on legal history, Professor Friedland brings to this task an accomplished eye and ear and a status as a long time member of the University community. Professor Friedland’s text is accompanied by over 200 maps, drawings and photographs.

Published to coincide with the University’s 175th anniversary, The University of Toronto: A History tells the story of the university in the context of the history of the nation of which it is a part, weaving the stories of the people who have been a part of this institution – people who make up a who’s who in the history of Canada.

Anyone who attended the University or who is interested in the growth of Canada’s intellectual heritage will enjoy this compelling and magisterial history.

The University of Toronto, Ont. : a history Friedland, Martin University of Toronto Press, 2002 jan 31

The University of Toronto is Canada's leading university and one of Canada's most important cultural and scientific institutions. Covering the history of the University from its origins as King's College in 1827 to the present, Martin Friedland weaves together personalities, events, and intellectual ideas to create a scholarly, yet highly readable history that includes major figures such as Northrop Frye and Marshall McLuhan, and dramatic events such as the admission of women in the 1880s, the University College fire of 1890, the University's contributions during the First and Second World Wars, and the student protests of the 1960s.

In researching and writing the book Friedland drew on archival records, private diaries, oral interviews, and a vast quantity of secondary literature. He also drew on his own knowledge of the University as a student in the 1950s, and later as a faculty member and dean of law who was involved in some of the issues he discusses.

The history of the University of Toronto as described by Friedland is intimately connected with events outside the University. Transitions in Canadian society such as that from the early dependence on Great Britain and fear of the United States to the present dominance of American culture and ideas can be seen mirrored in the University. One can also trace the affects of the two World Wars, the Cold War, and the Vietnam War. As Canadian society and culture developed and changed through the latter half of the twentieth century, do too did the university: this university's history is the history of Canada and all Canadians.

The first history of the university in seventy-five years, The University of Toronto: A History will be published to coincide with the University's 175th anniversary. Anyone who attended the University or who is interested in the growth of Canada's intellectual heritage will enjoy this compelling and magisterial work.

In the histories of the University of Toronto which have been written to date women are conspicuous in their absence. It must be stressed that the present book is not intended to stand as a full-scale history of women at the University of Toronto. It is, rather, a preliminary attempt to gather together some of the materials of fundamental significance to women's experience at this University.

Halfway up Parnassus: A Personal Account of the University of Toronto, 1932-1971 (Heritage) Claude Thomas Bissell University of Toronto Press, 1, 1974
Halfway up Parnassus is a personal account of the University of Toronto with particular emphasis on the period when Dr. Bissell was its president, from 1958 to 1971. The first half of that period was the flowering of the old, self-confident university, with its established patterns of government, and its untroubled constituents. The second half saw the slow, powerful emergence of a new university, uncertain of itself and its role, seeking to find a form for democratic aspirations—not, however, without some dramatic confrontations with left-wing students. Nowhere in Canada was the process more sharply defined than at the University of Toronto. This book records that process from the point of view of a major participant. It is also intended as a series of portraits of major academic figures and as an intimate recollection of a society that is passing away. It is not a philosophical book about education, but a human document—an attempt to render the tone of academic society, and in this account Dr. Bissell has combined, to great effect, autobiography, descriptive narration, and historical analysis. Someone to Teach Them : York and the Great University Explosion, 1960 -1973 John T. Saywell University of Toronto Press, Scholarly Publishing Division, University of Toronto Press, Toronto, 2008
From the early 1960s to the 1970s, the province of Ontario witnessed an explosion in university enrolment. So dramatic was the increase that there were neither the institutions nor the faculty in place to meet the demand. In response, a dozen new universities from Trent in the southeast to Lakehead in the northwest were established, and faculty had to be recruited wherever they could be found. It was the events and developments of this decade, many argue, that created the university system that exists in Ontario today. Someone to Teach Them is an insider's account of this period as told by historian John T. Saywell. As Dean of Arts at York University from 1963 to 1973, Saywell witnessed the expansion of the university from 500 students in 1963 to 7000 by 1970, and the many changes it took to accommodate such a change. York managed to recruit the necessary faculty, he writes, but the large number of American instructors led to a radical attack on the so-called Americanization of the universities. Saywell also elucidates the adverse effect that the reduction of government funding and enrolment had on the administration of the university in the 1970s. Featuring many of the elements of personal memoir, this is also a thoroughly researched account of a critical decade for the history of education in Ontario.
