Yoga Studies in Five Minutes Theodora Wildcroft, Barbora Sojkova Equinox Publishing Ltd, in 5 Minutes
oga Studies in Five Minutes provides an accessible guide to the diverse and growing field of research into yoga as a social, historical and cultural phenomenon. Both leading scholars and innovative researchers offer 60 brief responses to questions that offer insights into the study of yoga, such as: Who was the first teacher of yoga? Is yoga Indian? What is parampara? Are there holy texts in yoga? What are the goals of yoga? Why do yogis hold their breath? The collection covers ancient history, modern developments, and contemporary issues, considers the diverse practices and philosophies of yoga in a range of contexts, and uses a range of approaches, from philology to anthropology to art history. The collection is useful for established scholars looking to broaden their understanding of this rapidly developing field, as well as for those new to the subject. The book is an ideal starting point for both independent study and the classroom.Theo Wildcroft, PhD, is a teacher, trainer, writer, and scholar, whose research considers the democratization of yoga post-lineage, and the evolving practice of teaching yoga for community health. She is the author of Post-Lineage Yoga: From Guru to #MeToo and co-editor of The Yoga Teacher's Survival Guide, an Associate Lecturer at the Open University, Visiting Lecturer at the University of Chester, and former Project Coordinator for the SOAS Centre of Yoga Studies. Barbora Sojkova holds a DPhil in Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (Sanskrit) from the University of Oxford where her research focused on human-animal relationships in Vedic Sanskrit literature. She works as an academic librarian at the All Souls College, Oxford, and as a Sanskrit cataloguer at the Bodleian Library, Oxford. She is a certified yoga teacher and trainer focusing on history and philosophy of yoga.

lgli/Playing God Belief and Ritual in the Muttappan Cult of North Malabar [547797].pdf
Playing God : belief and ritual in the Muttappan cult of North Malabar Theodore P. C. Gabriel Equinox Publishing Limited, Illustrated, PS, 2010
Playing God discusses the genre of rituals known as Teyyam extant in the North Malabar region of Kerala State, India. In this elaborately costumed ritual practitioners invoke the spirit of a deity into themselves that constitutes a splendid theophany in which, when the ritual process is over, the devotees are able to talk to the god and invoke his/her blessings and predictions of their future. This book concentrates on the cult of the Muttappan duo of gods, the most popular among the Teyyams of North Malabar. The Muttappan cult, though originating from worship of a forest god by tribal groups and untouchables of the hill districts of North Malabar, is not only popular in Kerala, but also attracts worshippers from all the castes and regions of South India. Playing God analyses the mythology and ritual praxis of the Muttappan cult and examines attempts to integrate the cult into a wider Hinduism by enunciating a new hermeneutic of the legend and rituals based on the Hindu Advaitic tradition. The book also discusses how the Teyyam ritual contrasts significantly with rituals and worship in Brahminical Hinduism. The popularity of the cult is a reflection of the changing relationships between castes in Kerala, involving a closer symbiosis and reflecting the urge by the untouchable groups of Kerala to gain a higher standing and acceptance in Keralan Hindu society. The rituals are rich in theological significance and symbolism, and have links to the performing arts of Kerala such as Kathakali and Ottam Tullal.

lgli/The Language Impact _ Evolution - System - Discourse.pdf
The Language Impact : Evolution -- System -- Discourse Alwin Frank Fill Equinox Publishing Limited, Annotated, 2010-12-31
The Language Impact is a transdisciplinary book which looks at language from the point of view of its effect on the world. The appearance of language on our planet is compared by the author to a natural event with far-reaching consequences which are still gaining in importance. This 'impact' of language on the earth is located in the book at three levels: The evolution of the human species; The language system; Discourse. The book is accordingly divided into three parts: each part shows in detail and with many examples to what extent language has had and still has a strong effect on individuals, societies and the earth in general. The book is a scholarly survey of the effects of language and discourse, which range from the first bonding talk 30,000 years ago to the effects of the internet in the 21st century A.D. The book covers a wide variety of topics. These include the phylogeny of language, Linguistic Relativity (Sapir/Whorf) and Linguistic Constructivism, Cognitive Linguistics as well as Critical Discourse Analysis and Discourse Strategies. All in all, 20 different topic areas are looked at from the point of view of language impact. The book could become the basic textbook for 'impact linguistics', a new branch of the study of language in which all the effects are explored which language and discourse have had so far, are having now and will have in the future.

Exploring College Writing: Reading, Writing and Researching across the Curriculum (FRAMEWORKS FOR WRITING) Daniel Melzer Equinox Publishing Limited, Frameworks for writing, Sheffield, 2011
Exploring College Reading, Writing and Researching across the Curriculum is a rhetoric for first-year and sophomore composition courses that uses a constructivist, ethnographic approach to introducing students to academic reading, writing, and researching. This text will be especially useful to composition instructors who wish to provide students with both a general overview of academic discourse and an introduction to the purposes, audiences, and genres of writing across disciplines. This textbook works from the premise that the best way to initiate students to academic discourse is to have them explore academic literacies using an ethnographic, fieldwork approach to their own institution. Students are cast in the role of researchers, exploring their own experiences as college writers and investigating writing in General Education and in their prospective majors. The book provides instructors and students sequences of engaging and exploratory "Writing to Learn" and "Learn by Doing" activities and formal, extended writing projects that ask students to interview professors, analyze writing assignments, and reflect on their own reading, writing, and researching processes and histories. These writing projects connect to students' interests, experiences, and goals and provide them with a sense of purpose and audience for writing. The organization of Exploring College Writing moves students from reflection to investigation. Part I of the book provides a broad introduction to academic reading, writing, and researching and introduces students to the rhetorical situations, genres, and common college thinking and writing strategies. Part I presents students with prompts that ask them to explore the similarities and differences between high school and college literacy and reflect on their own literacy histories. Part II asks students to think critically about their reading, writing, and researching processes and to explore strategies for college reading, writing, and researching processes. Part II includes prompts that ask students to explore college reading, writing, and researching processes and practice academic research and making academic arguments. Part III introduces students to writing across the curriculum and the idea of disciplines and discourse communities. Part IV asks students to investigate the reading, writing, and researching assigned in the General Education and major courses at their campus and to consider discipline-specific ways of writing and thinking. Unlike other textbooks Exploring College Writing uses authentic student and professional texts from across disciplines in a variety of genres such as lab reports, scholarly book reviews, ethnographies and case studies to guide and inspire the writing process.

lgli/Mixed Methods Research in Language Teaching and Learning.pdf
Mixed Methods Research in Language Teaching and Learning A Mehdi Riazi; Equinox Publishing Equinox Publishing; Equinox Publishing Limited, First published, Sheffield ; Bristol, 2017
Mixed Methods Research (mmr), Where Quantitative And Qualitative Methods Are Combined In The Collecting And Analysing Of Research Data, Is Gaining Increasing Prominence And Utility Across A Range Of Academic Disciplines Including Applied Linguistics And Language Teaching And Learning. This Volume Is The First To Examine Mmr In Language Teaching And Learning And How Such A Methodology Works In Practice. The Book Brings Together All The Main Topics Related To Mmr In One Place And Attempts To Elaborate On And Discuss Them In Plain Language To Help Researchers Better Understand And Use The Methodology. In Addition To Detailed Discussion Of The Theoretical (for Example, The Worldviews Underlying Mmr) And Practical (purposes, Designs, Data Collection And Analysis), The Book Presents A Framework For Analyzing Mmr (frammr) Studies. In The Third Section Of The Book Where Frammr Is Presented, Eight Published Mmr Articles Addressing Different Topics In Language Teaching And Learning Are Analysed And Eight More Are Suggested To Be Analysed By The Readers Using Frammr. Another Salient Feature Of The Book Is Chapter 7 In Which Writing Mmr Proposals Is Discussed. The Chapter Should Be Of Particular Interest To Postgraduate And Doctoral Students As Well As Early Career Researchers Who Will Be Preparing Thesis And/or Research Proposals. Given The Scarcity Of Resources On Mmr In Applied Linguistics In General, And Language Teaching And Learning In Particular, The Current Volume Can Fill This Gap To A Great Extent. Attempt Has Been Made To Present A Coherent And Transparent Discussion Of Sometimes Confusing Mmr Issues And Topics. As A Newly Developed Research Methodology, Mmr Poses Its Own Challenges To Researchers. These Challenges Are Also Discussed In Different Chapters Of The Book So That Researchers Can Consider Them When Planning For And Implementing Mmr Projects.

lgli/Conflicts in Interpretation.pdf
Conflicts in Interpretation (Advances in Optimality Theory) Petra Hendriks, Helen de Hoop, Irene Kraemer, Henriette de Swart, Joost Zwarts Equinox Publishing Limited, Advances in optimality theory, London, 2010
Conflicts in Interpretation applies novel methods of constraint interaction, derived from connectionist theories and implemented in linguistics within the framework of Optimality Theory, to core semantic and pragmatic issues such as polysemy, negation, (in)definiteness, focus, anaphora, and rhetorical structure. It explores the hypothesis that a natural language grammar is a set of potentially conflicting constraints on forms and meanings. Moreover, it hypothesizes that competent language users not only optimize from an input form to the optimal output meaning for this form, or vice versa, but also consider the opposite direction of optimization, thus taking into account the speaker as a hearer and taking into account the hearer as a speaker. The book aims to show that such a bidirectional constraint-based grammar sheds new light on the relation between form and meaning, within a sentence as well as across sentence boundaries, within a single language as well as across languages, and within competent adult language users as well as during language development. An important dimension of the book is the structured investigation of issues at the interface of semantics with syntax and pragmatics, such as the effects of distinguishing between speaker's perspective and hearer's perspective in comprehension and production, stable and instable patterns of form and meaning across languages, and the development of a coherent pattern of form and meaning in children. The book will be of interest to any researcher or advanced student in linguistics, cognitive science, language typology, or psycholinguistics who is interested in the capacity of our human mind to map meaning onto form, and form onto meaning.

nexusstc/Philosophical Perspectives on Modern Qur'ānic Exegesis: Key Paradigms and Concepts/2ff49c4d8c3ab54510bd76b06f979a90.pdf
Philosophical Perspectives on Modern Qur'ānic Exegesis: Key Paradigms and Concepts Massimo Campanini Equinox Publication, 1, 2016
This book explores the possibility of a hermeneutics of the Qur'an. It starts from the presupposition that the Qur'an can be studied as a philosophical book. Thus the analysis is theoretical more than historical. Many philosophers commented the Qur'an and many supported their theories by resorting to the Qur'an. Thinkers like Fakhr al-Din al-Razi connected traditional theology and philosophy in their Qur'anic commentary. Others like Nasr Abu Zayd used philosophy to deconstruct the Qur'an paving the way for a modern humanistic hermeneutics. This book tries to go a step further: it aims to offer a path within the Qur'an that - through philosophy - leads to a fresh understanding of fundamental tenets of Islamic thought, most importantly tawhid - God's oneness - and to a fresh reading of the Qur'anic text. This book applies the phenomenological and ontological hermeneutics of Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger to the study of the Qur'an going far beyond Annemarie Schimmel's phenomenological approach that is neither philosophical nor properly phenomenological (in Husserl's sense).

What the Buddha Thought (Oxford Centre for Buddhist Studies Monographs) Richard F. Gombrich Equinox Publishing Limited, Oxford Centre for Buddhist Studies monographs, London, Oakville, Conn, England, 2009
In What the Buddha Thought, Richard Gombrich argues that the Buddha was one of the most brilliant and original thinkers of all time. Intended to serve as an introduction to the Buddha’s thought, and hence even to Buddhism itself, the book also has larger aims: it argues that we can know far more about the Buddha than it is fashionable among scholars to admit, and that his thought has a greater coherence than is usually recognised. It contains much new material. Interpreters both ancient and modern have taken little account of the historical context of the Buddha’s teachings; but by relating them to early brahminical texts, and also to ancient Jainism, Gombrich gives a much richer picture of the Buddha’s meaning, especially when his satire and irony are appreciated. Incidentally, since many of the Buddha’s allusions can only be traced in the Pali versions of surviving texts, the book establishes the importance of the Pali Canon as evidence. The book contains much new material. The author stresses the Buddha’s capacity for abstraction: though he made extensive use of metaphor, he did not found his arguments upon it, as earlier thinkers had done. He ethicized and radically reinterpreted older ideas of karma (human action) and rebirth. Similarly, building on older texts, he argued for the fundamental importance of love and compassion, and analysed fire as a process which could stand as a model for every component of conscious experience. Morally, the Buddha’s theory of karma provided a principle of individuation and asserted each individual’s responsibility for his own destiny. To make the book completely accessible to the general reader, the author provides an introductory section of ‘Background Information,’ for easy reference.

nexusstc/Understanding Allomorphy: Perspectives from Optimality Theory/6117a6535b40d7ed47866b7035f0ee18.pdf
Understanding Allomorphy: Perspectives from Optimality Theory (Advances in Optimality Theory) Eulàlia Bonet; Joan Mascaró; Maria-Rosa Lloret Equinox Publishing Limited, Advances in optimality theory, 1. publ., 2015
This volume is a collection of original contributions to the study of lexical allomorphy, with a focus on Optimality Theory’s distinctive take on this topic. The chapters provide an up-to-date perspective on the advances in our understanding of allomorphy which Optimality Theory has been able to secure (in comparison with rule-based Generative Phonology). They also consider a number of important allomorphy questions which Optimality Theory has helped raise and address (e.g. the nature of inputs, the role of paradigms, the interaction of phonology with other modules of grammar, lexical storage vs computation, degrees of phonological (ir)regularity, subcategorization vs markedness). The contributors form an international array of linguists from North America and Europe. A broad variety of languages serve as the empirical base for the volume, either in detailed case studies (e.g. Burushaski, Catalan, English, French, Italian, Moroccan Arabic, Sahaptin) or in encompassing typological surveys. The volume is aimed at professional linguists with an interest in phonology, morphology, and the lexicon. With its broad coverage of allomorphy issues, the book’s content will also lend itself to courses in phonology and morphology for advanced undergraduates and graduate students.

Ritual And Religious Belief: A Reader (critical Categories In The Study Of Religion) Graham Harvey; Harvey, Graham New York: Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), London, 2017
The study of ritual and how it relates to beliefs and ideas is of central importance in our understanding of the world. Rituals can become divorced from beliefs and religious believers regarded as simply'going through the motions'.'Ritual and Religious Belief: A Reader'presents the full range of scholarly thinking on ritual and ritualizing as they relate to belief. It questions the assumption that belief should take precedence over outward behaviour and engages with questions such as: how are rituals related to performance; are politics ritualized; and is there a difference between rituals and etiquette? This comprehensive volume brings together material by eminent scholars from across the centuries, ranging from Martin Luther's sacramental dialogues to the life and routine patterns of Zen Buddhist Temples and the relationship between magic, religion and science. It will be of interest to all those engaged in the study of the dynamics between ritual and belief.

Origin and evolution of languages : approaches, models, paradigms Bernard Laks; Serge Cleuziou; Jean-Paul Demoule; Pierre Encrevé Equinox Publishing Limited, Illustrated, PS, 2008
<p>Origin and Evolution of Languages has a strong interdisciplinary flavor designed to highlight the true complexity of the debates in the field. Many of the models and theories conjectured can only receive their validation from a convergence of arguments developed across disciplines. The book underscores this dimension by including contribution from disciplines that have been wary, traditionally, of extending beyond their borders&#58; linguistics (different branches thereof), philosophy, history and prehistory, archaeology, anthropology, genetics and computer-modelling. The presentation is intended to encompass both the agreements and disjunctures characteristic of the field and insisted on laying open propositions that clearly differ from, and even enter into contradiction with, one another. While several teams of researchers active in the fields of genetics, linguistics, anthropology and archaeology have come up with new proposals in favor of the 'New Synthesis,' many competing hypotheses and models continue to be explored in areal linguistics, language contact, wave-like diffusion. On the anthropological scene, criticisms of the monogenetic model have set up new debates and counter-arguments. Approaching the issue of the origin and evolution of human languages within a Darwinian paradigm remains problematic. On the archaeological scene, not all reconstructions are proving compatible with current models for the circulation of techniques, myths and cultures. On the linguistic scene, raising again the issue of the origin / evolution of humankind and of languages in an evolutionary, cognitive, social and cultural perspective or in terms of generational transmission and acquisition, may induce a reconsideration of linguistic theories in search of universals as well as most theories of change and variation. All contributors are world-renowned experts in their domain.</p>

Analysing: Casual Conversation (Equinox Textbooks and Surveys in Linguistics) Eggins, Suzanne, Slade, Diana Equinox Publishing (UK); Equinox Publishing, Equinox textbooks and surveys in linguistics, Pbk. ed, London, 2004
<p>Analysing Casual Conversation, first published in 1997 by Cassell, develops a systematic model for the analysis and description of casual conversation in English. Working through authentic examples of casual conversations involving participants differing in age, gender, ethnicity and socio-economic class, the authors argue that despite its sometimes aimless appearance and apparently unstructured content, casual conversation is a highly structured activity and plays a critical role in the social construction of reality. Drawing on insights from sociology, linguistics and critical semiotics, the book equips readers with the analytic skills to describe the layers of structure and critical interpretive frameworks to explain the 'social work' that goes on through chat. Suzanne Eggins is Senior Lecturer in the School of English, University of New South Wales, Sydney Diana Slade is Professor of Applied Linguistics in the Faculty of Education at the University of Technology, Sydney.</p>

Delivering processing instruction in classrooms and in virtual contexts : research and practice Alessandry G. Benati, James F. Lee Equinox Publishing Limited, 1. publ, London, 2007
"Processing Instruction (PI) is an approach to grammar instruction for second language learning. It derives its name from the fact that the instruction (both the explicit explanation as well as the practices) attempt to influence, alter, and/or improve the way learners process input. PI contrasts with traditional grammar instruction in many ways, most principally in its focus on input whereas traditional grammar instruction focuses on learners' output. The greatest contribution of PI to both theory and practice is the concept of 'structured input', a form of comprehensible input that has been manipulated to maximise learners' benefit of exposure to input." "This volume focuses on a new issue for PI, the role of technology in language learning, It examines empirically the differential effects of delivering PI in classrooms with an instructor and students interacting (with each other and with the instructor) versus on computers to students working individually. It also contributes to the growing body of research on the effects of PI on different languages as well as different linguistic items: preterite/imperfect aspectual contrast and negative informal commands in Spanish, the subjunctive of doubt and opinion in Italian, and the subjunctive of doubt in French. Further research contributions are made by comparing PI with other types of instruction, specifically, with meaning-oriented output instruction."--BOOK JACKET

Philosophy and the End of Sacrifice: Disengaging Ritual in Ancient India, Greece and Beyond (The Study of Religion in a Global Context) Peter Jackson; Anna-Pya Sjödin; Equinox Publishing Equinox Publishing (Indonesia), The study of religion in a global context, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, 2016
"This volume addresses the means and ends of sacrificial speculation by inviting a selected group of specialists in the fields of philosophy, history of religions, and indology to examine philosophical modes of sacrificial speculation - especially in Ancient India and Greece - and consider the commonalities of their historical raison d'etre. Scholars have long observed, yet without presenting any transcultural grand theory on the matter, that sacrifice seems to end with (or even continue as) philosophy in both Ancient India and Greece. How are we to understand this important transformation that so profoundly changed the way we think of religion (and philosophy as opposed to religion) today? Some of the complex topics inviting closer examination in this regard are the interiorisation of ritual, ascetism and self-sacrifice, sacrifice and cosmogony, the figure of the philosopher-sage, transformations and technologies of the self, analogical reasoning, the philosophy of ritual, vegetarianism, and metempsychosis"-- Page 4 de la couverture

lgli/Whys and Therefores - A Rational Look at the English Language.pdf
Whys & Therefores : A Rational Look at the English Language Rutherford, William E. Equinox Publishing Limited, Illustrated, US, 2011
Whys & Therefores aids the reader in arriving at generalizations for the shape of the English language: words, grammar, meaning, sound and spelling. The format adopted throughout is that of a light-hearted ongoing Socratic dialogue between a mentor and a pupil. The intended effects of such activity are: awareness of what it means to 'know' a language; reliance upon native-language intuition; discovery of what one didn't know that one already 'knows' about the language; use of ungrammaticality as an investigative tool; healthy questioning of received facts about language from so-called experts; and usefulness of language play. Whys & Therefores can be read as a book, listened to on the accompanying CD, dipped into at random, expanded upon, even acted out. The language phenomena treated therein are indexed and tabbed to the dialogues where they are discussed, making Whys & Therefores a valuable source of reference. Whys & Therefores is intended as an entertaining yet serious do-it-yourself book about aspects of English language form and meaning. However, it will also prove useful to schools as classroom material to be further exploited by the instructor in free-range dialogue form, and to institutions offering teacher training in rational-based instructional procedures for English language education in the schools.

Technomad: Global Raving Countercultures (studies In Popular Music) Graham St John Equinox Publishing (Indonesia), Studies in Popular Music, 1, 2009
<p>A cultural history of global electronic dance music countercultures, Technomad explores the pleasurable and activist trajectories of post-rave. The book documents an emerging network of techno-tribes, exploring their pleasure principles and cultural politics. Attending to sound system culture, electro-humanitarianism, secret sonic societies, teknivals and other gatherings, intentional parties, revitalisation movements and counter-colonial interventions, Technomad investigates how the dance party has been harnessed for transgressive and progressive ends, for manifold freedoms. Seeking freedom from moral prohibitions and standards, pleasure in rebellion, refuge from sexual and gender prejudice, exile from oppression, rupturing aesthetic boundaries, re-enchanting the world, reclaiming space, fighting for "the right to party", and responding to a host of critical concerns, electronic dance music cultures are multivalent sites of resistance. Drawing on extensive ethnographic, netogaphic and documentary research, Technomad details the post-rave trajectory through various local sites and global scenes, with each chapter attending to unique developments in the techno counterculture&#58; e.g. Spiral Tribe, teknivals, psytrance, Burning Man, Reclaim the Streets, Earthdream. The book offers an original nuanced theory of resistance to assist understanding of these developments. This cultural history of hitherto uncharted territory will be of interest to students of cultural, performance, music, media, and new social movement studies, along with enthusiasts of dance culture and popular politics.</p>

Fantasy And Belief: Alternative Religions, Popular Narratives, And Digital Cultures (approaches To New Religions) Danielle Kirby Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), Abingdon, Oxon, 2014
"Religion and spirituality are being transformed in our late modern and secularising times. New forms of belief proliferate, often notable for not being limited to traditional systems of reference or expression. Increasingly, these new religions present worldviews which draw directly upon popular culture - or occulture - in fiction, film, art and the internet. Fantasy and Belief explores the context and implications of these types of beliefs through the example of the Otherkin community. The Otherkin are a loosely-affiliated group who believe themselves to be in some way more than just human, their non-humanity often rooted in the characters and narratives of popular fantasy and science fiction. Challenging much current sociological thinking about spirituality and consumption, Fantasy and Belief reveals how popular occulture operates to recycle, develop, and disseminate metaphysical ideas, and how the popular and the sacred are combining in new ways in today's world." -- Publisher's description.

Alternatives Unincorporated: Earth Ethics from the Grassroots (Cross Cultural Theologies) George Zachariah Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), Abingdon, Oxon, 2014
The victims of environmental destruction are often sidelined in eco-theology and environmental discourse. Movements for ecological justice fail to take into account the voice of those at the grassroots. 'Alternatives Unincorporated' presents an environmental ethics that begins with those on the margins. Using the key example of the Narmada Dam in India and the popular resistance movement which built up against the project, the book examines the collective action of subaltern communities in caring for their local environment. The book frames these movements as theological texts that inform a life-affirming earth ethics. The aim of the book is to challenge prevailing social and ecological dynamics and to affirm the interconnectedness of social justice and environmental action.

Everyday readers : reading and popular culture Collinson, Ian Equinox Publishing Limited, London, Oakville, Conn, England, 2009
<p><p>book Reading Often Seems To Function As A Barometer Of Cultural Vitality. For Those Who Wish To Argue That We Live In A Dumbed-down Age, The Alleged Decline In Book Reading Often Becomes The Benchmark Of Falling Cultural Standards. Although Pessimistic Critics And Commentators May Shout That The Time Of The Book Is Over, As They Have Since The Fifteenth Century, Millions Of Readers Worldwide Are Not Listening To Them. Despite The Allure Of Television And The Internet, Book Reading Remains A Popular Activity. However, Despite The Huge Global Audiences For Books, It Is Surprising That The Complexity Of Everyday Book Culture Is Not Readily Comprehended. To The Apparently Simple And Perennial Question&#58; 'what Do People Do With Books?', This Research Offers A Sophisticated Response That Goes Beyond The Narrow Perception That Reading Is Solely The Consumption Of Narrative. It Combines A Number Of Different Academic Approaches (cultural Geography And Sociology; Literary And Cultural Studies; And Cultural History) In Order To Better Understand The Complex Nature Of Readers' Everyday Encounters With Their Books. Through The Use Of An Ethnographic Method, Which Grounds The Analysis Firmly In The Experience Of Real Embodied Readers, This Work Reveals The Rich Textures Of Everyday Reading Culture. It Demonstrates How Seemingly Mundane Acts Of Popular Reading Are, In Fact, Complex Performances Enabled And Curtailed Simultaneously By Three Cultural Economies&#58; The Spatio-temporal, The Social And The Textual. While The Consumption Of Narrative (often Thought To Be An Entirely Adequate Definition Of Reading) Remains Significant, It Is Only A Single Element In An Everyday Reading Practice That Is, As This Book Shows, Anything But Ordinary.</p>

Culture and gender of voice pitch : a sociophonetic comparison of the Japanese and Americans Ikuko Patricia Yuasa Equinox Publishing Ltd, London, Oakville, CT, England, 2008
The major task of this book is a sociophonetic exploration of voice pitch characteristics of speakers across the cultures of Japan and America. This volume makes a cogent argument for the socio-cultural role of voice pitch in the expression of emotion and politeness and how culture and gender can intersect with each other. The book tenders acoustic phonetic evidence (as well as discourse analyses) in construing how an individual's voice pitch modulation utilized in conversational speech is reflected in this intersection as it demonstrates several methodological innovations crucial for sociophonetic research. Observations of people's voice pitch commonly made impressionistically not only contribute to this prosodic feature's perceptual stereotypes, but also inform us about our attitudes towards certain voice pitch characteristics. This volume includes an extensive review of these impressionistic remarks and acoustic phonetic investigations of voice pitch initiated in the early 20th century in the two nations, the latter of which contributed to both confirming and reconsidering the former. The volume further alludes to how attitudinal differences between these cultures were found to surface in the acoustically measured voice pitch modulation patterns obtained for this volume, stressing that voice pitch is capable of revealing various socio-cultural aspects of human behaviors.

"A History of Potters and Pottery in Ancient Jerusalem surveys four thousand years of pottery production and presents fresh, totally unexpected information, using technical and analytical methods. It provides a study of ancient pottery of Jerusalem from the earliest settlement to the medieval city and brings to light important aspects that cannot be discovered by the commonly accepted morphological pottery descriptions." "New insights include the discovery that third millennium B.C.E. pottery appears to have been produced by nomadic families, Middle Bronze Age ceramics were made by professional potters in the Wadi Refaim, the pottery market of the Iron Age II pottery cannot be closely dated and was still produced during the first centuries after the exile, and the new shapes were made by Greek immigrant potters." "This book also contains a chapter on the systematics of ceramic studies and numerous notes about the potters themselves."--Jacket.

Jesus Beyond Nationalism : Constructing the Historical Jesus in a Period of Cultural Complexity edited by Halvor Moxnes, Ward Blanton, and James G. Crossley Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), [Place of publication not identified], 2016
The study of Jesus has rarely looked at its own scholarly context, at how the representation of Jesus might be shaped by those who study him. 'Jesus beyond Nationalism' examines how - since the beginnings of historical Jesus studies in the nineteenth century - representations of Jesus have been used to promote hegemonic or mono-cultural views. The ideology behind such representation has operated to deny difference in society, difference in terms of race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality. Examining depictions of Jesus in a range of contexts - from the Russian Christ and Jesus as 'Holy Anarchist' to Jesus in Muslim thought - Jesus Beyond Nationalism reveals the politics behind the ways in which Jesus has been constructed and presented.

Statistical methods in language and linguistic research Pascual Cantos Gómez Equinox Pub. Ltd; Equinox Publishing, 1, 2013
Statistical Methods in Language and Linguistic Research illustrates with numerous examples how quantitative methods can most fruitfully contribute to linguistic analysis and research. It does not intend to offer an exhaustive presentation of all statistical techniques available to linguistics, but to demonstrate the contribution that statistics can and should make to linguistic studies. This book shows how quantitative methods and statistical techniques can supplement qualitative analyses of language. It attempts to present some mathematical and statistical properties of natural languages, and introduces some of the quantitative methods which are of the most value in working empirically with texts and corpora, illustrating the various issues with numerous examples and moving from the most basic descriptive techniques to decision-taking techniques and to more sophisticated multivariate statistical language models. The Bible and the Environment: Towards a Critical Ecological Biblical Theology (Biblical Challenges in the Contemporary World) David G. Horrell Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), London, 2014
The biblical and Christian traditions have long been seen to have legitimated and encouraged humanity's aggressive domination of nature. Biblical visions of the future, with destruction for the earth and rescue for the elect, have also discouraged any concern for the earth's future or the welfare of future generations. But we now live in a time when environmental issues are at the centre of political and ethical debate. What is needed is a new reading of the biblical tradition that can meet the challenges of the ecological issues that face humanity at the beginning of the third millennium.'The Bible and the Environment'examines a range of biblical texts - from Genesis to Revelation - evaluating competing interpretations. The Bible provides a thoroughly ambivalent legacy. Certainly, it cannot provide straightforward teaching on care for the environment but nor can it simply be seen as an anti-ecological book. Developing an'ecological hermeneutic'as a way of mediating between contemporary concerns and the biblical text,'The Bible and the Environment'presents a way of productively reading the Bible in the context of contemporary ecology.

Delivering the word : preaching and exegesis in the western christian tradition; ed. by william john edited by William John Lyons and Isabella Sandwell Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), London, 2014
Biblical texts have been used consistently in sermons throughout Christian history. Preachers have transformed the texts into an aural experience, using them to evangelize, educate, edify, exhort, or even terrify, their audiences. Sermons have enabled Scripture to be communicated to people from a wide range of social backgrounds.'Delivering the Word'examines the power of preaching and its reception across two millennia of homilies: from St Paul, Origen, Chrysostom, Augustine and Hildegard of Bingen to Jonathan Edwards, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Aimee Semple McPherson, and Chris Brain. In its exploration of the impact of the sermon on the interpretation of Scripture,'Delivering the Word'will be of interest to students of biblical and religious studies.

Behavioral Archaeology: Principles and Practice (Equinox Handbooks in Anthropological Archaeology) Michael Brian Schiffer; with the assistance of Kacy L. Hollenback and contributions by James M. Skibo and William H. Walker Equinox Publishing Ltd, Equinox handbooks in anthropological archaeology, London, Oakville [Conn.], England, 2010
This book is a synthesis of the fundamental method and theory of behavioral archaeology, organized in terms of the temporal order in which general topics have been addressed. The development of key ideas is recounted in relation to the historical contexts in which they emerged. Among the major topics addressed are philosophy of science and the scientific method, artifacts and human behavior, archaeological inference, formation processes of the archaeological record, technological change, behavioral change, and human communication. Case studies make clear the relevance of behavioral method and theory for the everyday practice of archaeology. Not only has behavioral archaeology successfully elucidated the nature of archaeological inference and demonstrated the importance of dealing with formation processes in every aspect of archaeological research, but it also furnishes a highly original approach for studying and explaining behavioral and technological change. The main message of the book is that behavioral archaeology, which privileges the study of people-artifact interactions at every scale, furnishes a coherent, mature, and still-developing program for conducting archaeological research in any society, past or present.

Numen, Old Men: Contemporary Masculine Spiritualities And The Problem Of Patriarchy (gender, Theology And Spirituality) Joseph Gelfer Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), London, 2009
Since the early 1990s there have been various movements designed to encourage'masculine spirituality'. All these movements share a concern that spirituality has become too feminine and that men's experiences of the spiritual are being marginalized. The task of masculine spirituality is to promote'authentic'masculine characteristics within a spiritual context. Numen, Old Men examines these characteristics to argue that masculine spirituality is thinly veiled patriarchy. The mythopoetic, evangelical, and Catholic men's movements are shown to promote a hetero-patriarchal spirituality by appealing to either combative and oppressive neo-Jungian archetypes or biblical models of man as the leader of the family. Numen, Old Men examines spiritualities that aim to honour and transcend both the masculine and feminine, and offers gay spirituality as an example of masculine spirituality that resists patriarchy.

Rethinking Hindu Identity (Religion in Culture) Dwijendra Narayan Jha Routledge, Religion in culture, Hoboken, 2014
Recent years have seen the emergence of a virulent version of Hindu nationalism and fundamentalism in India under the banner of Hindutva. This xenophobic movement has obfuscated and mystified the notion of Hindu identity and reinforced its stereotypes. Its arguments range from the patently unscientific - humankind was created in India, as was the first civilisation - to historical whitewash: Hinduism has continued in one, unchanged form for 5000 years; Hinduism has always been a tolerant faith.'Rethinking Hindu Identity'offers a corrective based on a deep and detailed reading of Indian history. Written in a riveting style, this study provides a fresh history of Hinduism - its practices, its beliefs, its differences and inconsistencies, and its own myths about itself. Along the way, the book systematically demolishes the arguments of Hindu fundamentalism and nationalism, revealing how the real history of Hinduism is much more complex.

In Search Of Solutions: The Problem Of Religion And Conflict (religion And Violence) Clinton Bennett Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), London, 2008
Religion has played a role in conflict throughout history, with religious scriptures often being used to justify violence. In Search of Solutions evaluates the role of religion in Northern Ireland, Bosnia and Israel-Palestine. The book argues that religion has a tendency towards conflict and that peace is best guaranteed when human individuals commune directly with the divine without the mediation of organized religions. Different approaches to the reading of scriptures are introduced, drawing on post-modern theory. In Search of Solutions will be invaluable for the student seeking a clear overview of both the theory and the practice of religion in conflict resolution.

Jonah's World: Social Science and the Reading of Prophetic Story (BibleWorld) Handy, Lowell K. Taylor & Francis, PT, 2008
The story of Jonah, often read as a simple children's story, is a multifaceted and elaborate narrative with serious intent. Treating the biblical book as a fictitious story based on real locations and recognizable persons, 'Jonah's World' examines the background to the story and draws on social science approaches to describe its imaginative world. The book explores the geography, theology, myth, human characters, natural landscape, and the ideology behind the story to uncover a vision of reality shaped by literary technique. Jonah's World will be invaluable to students and scholars seeking a new approach to the reading of this colourful text.

Notes from the Fortune-Telling Parrot: Islam and the Struggle for Religious Pluralism in Pakistan (Comparative Islamic Studies) David Pinault Equinox Publishing Limited, Comparative Islamic studies, Comparative Islamic studies, London, Oakville, CT, England, 2008
This book explores the richness of Pakistans religious landscape, giving attention to a number of topics: Shia flagellation processions, Urdu-language pulp fiction, streetside rituals involving animals (pariah-kites and fortune-telling parrots), and the use of sorcery to contend with the jinns that are believed to infest cities such as Lahore. Uniting these topics is an investigation of how Islamist politicians seek to eradicate sectarian diversity and repress localized forms of Muslim folk practices in the name of a standardized, uniform, and globalized version of Islam. The book looks at forms of resistance to this Islamist globalization, such as collaborative efforts by Christian, Hindu, and Muslim human-rights activists to repeal Pakistans notorious blasphemy law and assert the worth of religious pluralism.

Resurrecting Erotic Transgression: Subjecting Ambiguity In Theology (gender, Theology And Spirituality) Anita Monro Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), London, 2006
'Resurrecting Erotic Transgression' presents a feminist theological methodology based on the work of Julia Kristeva. This methodology provides the means for 'subjecting ambiguity', bringing to theology a recognition of the multiplicity of language and identity. A method of 'poetic reading' is proposed with a three stage process: articulation of the dualities present in and around a focal discourse; subversion of these dualities through a range of strategies; and the re-presentation of the discourse emphasising its ambiguous nature. The hermeneutical method of 'poetic reading' is explored in relation to three biblical texts and an image of the 'otherness' of God as whore.

Sociology of Religion for Generations X and Y Adam Possamai U.s.a.: Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), Abingdon, Oxon, 2014
Generations X and Y are plugged into the contemporary world of consumption, popular culture, and the internet. These generations treat knowledge and belief as a more flexible concept, often focusing on the practical rather than the theoretical and often drawing on conflicting sources in both popular and cyber culture. Their approach to religious belief and practice requires a new way of studying the sociology of religion. 'Sociology of Religion for Generations X and Y' examines key world religions - Buddhism, Christianity and Islam - as well as newer religious groups, such as Scientology, New Age, Witchcraft and online communities such as Jediism and Matrixism. The book covers a range of key concepts: secularisation and modernisation, re-enchantment, the 'McDonaldisation' of society, and the easternisation of the west. Each chapter opens with a case study from popular culture or the internet which takes the reader to the heart of the topic being discussed. Employing both classical sociological theory and contemporary critical theory, 'Sociology of Religion for Generations X and Y' explains where contemporary religion and spirituality are coming from, where they are now, and where they are going.

Defining Buddhism(s): A Reader (Critical Categories in the Study of Religion) edited by Karen Derris and Natalie Gummer Routledge, First Edition, 2007
'Defining Buddhism(s)' explores the multiple ways in which Buddhism has been defined and constructed by both Buddhists and scholars. In recent decades, scholars have become increasingly aware of their own role in the construction of how Buddhism is represented - a process in which multiple representations of Buddhism compete with and complement one another. The reader brings together key essays by leading scholars to examine the central methods and concerns of Buddhism. The essays aim to illuminate the challenges involved in defining historical, social, and political contexts and reveal how definitions of Buddhism have always been contested.

Secularism and Biblical Studies (BibleWorld) Roland Boer (eds.) Equinox Pub. Ltd; Routledge, Bible world (London, England), London, 2014
What is secular biblical criticism? Each of the essays gathered in this collection seeks to answer this disarmingly simple question. Rather than take up a position (which I do in my manifesto a little later), in this introduction I seek to map out some of the issues at stake. The issues fall into two groups: those that swirl around the terms secularism and secularization, and then those that explore the nature of biblical criticism.

Holy Terror : Understanding Religion and Violence in Popular Culture Eric S Christianson; Christopher Hugh Partridge Routledge, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), [Place of publication not identified], 2016
The authors of religious scriptures had little difficulty enhancing sacred narratives with the rhetoric of violence. The phenomenon continues in the habitual linkage of violence and religion in contemporary film, music and literature. 'Holy Terror' brings together scholars of religious studies, biblical studies, film studies and sociology to examine the social function of violence in popular discourse. The book questions how violent rhetoric shapes belief and values, how audience empathy with violent protagonists can be understood, and the significance of the association of violence with particular religious groups and ideas. A range of phenomena are analysed, including terrorism in Scripture, apocalyptic texts in film and violence in sport.

Language, Cognition and Space: The State of the Art and New Directions (Advances in Cognitive Linguistics) edited by Vyvyan Evans and Paul Chilton Equinox Publishing Limited, Advances in cognitive linguistics, 1. publ, London, 2010
Spatial perception and cognition is fundamental to human abilities to navigate through space, identify and locate objects, and track entities in motion. Moreover, research findings in the last couple of decades reveal that many of the mechanisms humans employ to achieve this are largely innate, providing abilities to store cognitive maps for locating themselves and others, locations, directions and routes. In this, humans are like many other species. However, unlike other species, humans can employ language in order to represent space. The human linguistic ability combined with the human ability for spatial representation apparently results in rich, creative and sometimes surprising extensions of representations for three-dimensional physical space. The present volume brings together over 20 articles from leading scholars who investigate the relationship between spatial cognition and spatial language. The volume is fully representative of the state of the art in terms of language and space research, and points to new directions in terms of findings, theory, and practice.

Structured Worlds: The Archaeology of Hunter-Gatherer Thought and Action (Approaches to Anthropological Archaeology) Aubrey Cannon; Society for American Archaeology Meeting (69th : 2004 : Montreal, Quebec) Routledge, Approaches to Anthropological Archaeology, 1, 2014
Hunter-gatherer societies are constrained by their environment and the technologies available to them. However, until now the role of culture in foraging communities has not been widely considered. 'Structured Worlds' examines the role of cosmology, values, and perceptions in the archaeological histories of hunter-fisher-gatherers. The essays examine a range of cultures - Mesolithic Europe, Siberia, Jomon Japan, the Northwest Coast, the northern Plains, and High Arctic of North America - to show the role of conceptual frameworks in subsistence and settlement, technology, mobility, migration, demography, and social organization. Spanning from the early Holocene period to the present day, 'Structured Worlds' draws on archaeology and ethnography to explore the role of beliefs, ritual, and social values in the interaction between foragers and their physical and social landscape. Material culture, animal bones and settlement patterns show that the behaviours of hunter-gatherers were shaped as much by cultural concepts as by material need.

Argonauts of the Desert: Structural Analysis of the Hebrew Bible (Copenhagen International Seminar) Philippe Wajdenbaum Routledge, Copenhagen International Seminar, 2014
'Argonauts of the Desert' presents a revolutionary new commentary on the Bible and its origins, arguing that most biblical stories and laws were inspired by Greek literature. From Genesis to Kings, the books of the Bible may have been written by a single author, a Hellenized Judean scholar who used Plato's ideal state in The Laws as a primary source. As such, biblical Israel is a recreation of that twelve tribes State and the stories surrounding the birth, life and death of that State were inspired by Greek epics. Each chapter presents the biblical material and compares this to the Greek or Roman equivalents, discussing similarities and differences.

Egalitarian Revolution in the Savanna: The Origins of a West African Political System (Approaches to Anthropological Archaeology) Stephen A. Dueppen Equinox Pub. Ltd.; Routledge, 1, PS, 2012
Many West African societies have egalitarian political systems, with non-centralised distributions of power. 'Egalitarian Revolution in the Savanna' analyses a wide range of archaeological data to explore the development of such societies. The volume offers a detailed case study of the village settlement of Kirikongo in western Burkina Faso. Over the course of the first millennium, this single homestead extended control over a growing community. The book argues that the decentralization of power in the twelfth century BCE radically transformed this society, changing gender roles, public activities, pottery making and iron-working. 'Egalitarian Revolution in the Savanna' will be of interest to students of political science, anthropology, archaeology and the history of West Africa.

Near Eastern Tribal Societies During the Nineteenth Century: Economy, Society and Politics Between Tent and Town (Approaches to Anthropological Archaeology) Eveline J. van der Steen Equinox Publishing (UK), Approaches to anthropological archaeology Near Eastern tribal societies during the nineteenth century, Hoboken, 2014
This volume provides an in-depth study of tribal life in the Near East in the 19th century, exploring how tribes shaped society, economy and politics in the desert, as well as in villages and towns. Until the First World War Near Eastern society was tribally organized. Particularly in the Levant and the Arabian peninsula, where the Ottoman empire was weak, large and powerful tribes such as Anaze, Beni Sakhr and Shammar interacted and competed for control of the land, the people and the economy. The main sources for this study are travel accounts of 19th century adventurers and explorers. Their travels, on horseback, on camel or on foot opened a fascinating window on a world with an ideology that was fundamentally different from their own, often Victorian background. One chapter is dedicated to oral traditions in the region, from heroic epics to short poems, which lets the tribes and tribe members themselves speak, giving a voice to the tribal frame of mind. Evidence of tribal organization as a driving force in society can be found in documents and sometimes in the archaeological record from the Bronze Age onwards. While a straight comparison between ancient and subrecent tribal communities is fraught with difficulties and must be treated with caution, a better understanding of 19th century tribal ethics and customs provides useful insights into the history and the power relations of a more distant past. At the same time it may help us understand some of the underlying causes for the present conflicts afflicting the region.

Dawn of the Metal Age: Technology and Society During the Levantine Chalcolithic (Approaches to Anthropological Archaeology) Jonathan M. Golden, Jonathan Michael Golden Acumen / Routledge, Approaches to Anthropological Archaeology, 20140
The fifth millennium BCE was a period of rapid social change. One of the key factors was the developments in technology which led to the rise of the metals industry. Archaeological finds from sites dating to the Chalcolithic period indicate the production and use of copper. 'Dawn of the Metal Age' examines a range of sites - from copper mines in Jordan and Israel to the villages of the northern Negev where copper was produced in household workshops, to a series of cave burials where a range of luxury metal goods were buried with the elite members of Chalcolithic society. Ancient technology is reconstructed from the archaeological evidence, which also illuminates the changing economic, social, religious and political environment of the time.
