zlib/History/Russian & Soviet History/Bernard Shaw/Fabianism and the Empire:: A Manifesto by the Fabian Society_83062482.epub
Fabianism and the Empire: : A Manifesto by the Fabian Society Bernard Shaw Patavium Publishing, 1, 2023
In 1900 Bernard Shaw completed the difficult task of drafting the Fabian's society position in the manifest Fabianism and the Empire. The society's progressive program advocated for socialist values, social justice and women rights. Against the background of these modern and leftist values though, the society's position on imperialism is somehow astonishing. One of the motives for its supportive stand on imperialism lies in the yet valid division they made between domestic and international politics. Edward Pease's The History of the Fabian society addresses the international system, for example under terms of efficiency and colonialism. According to him 'the only valid moral right to national possession is that the occupier is making adequate use of it for the benefit of the world community.' From the 'International Socialist point of view' national sovereignty and noninterference are not acceptable and the world must strive for an 'international civilization' according to socialist merits. Pease as well as Bernard Shaw in Fabianism and the Empire accept colonialism as a fact and furthermore they illustrate the Great Powers' advance as colonizers 'only [as] a question of time.'... Shaw points out two possible 'imperial policies' of which the second is 'a bureaucratic policy where the majority consists of colored natives.' This illustrates one of the policies the British attempted to implement in Sudan after their conquest of 1899. This paper will analyze various approaches of the British administrative in Sudan, as Indirect Rule and Native Administration. Beyond it, it will address the policy's aims and actual results with which the Sudanese had to cope and which still interfere greatly in the daily reality of Sudan. It will try to draw connection between the actual situation in Sudan, and especially in Darfur, and the colonial legacy of the British policies.

Miracle at El Alamein Richard McMillan Pickle Partners Publishing, null, null, 2019
Miracle at El Alamein, first published in 1943 as Mediterranean Assignment is British journalist Richard McMillan's first-hand account of World War Two in North Africa and Greece during 1940-1942. He was the first war correspondent to be licensed by the British Expeditionary Forces (BEF), and accompanied British forces in most of their campaigns in the European and African theaters of the war. He details the strategy, tactics, and on-the-ground fighting of Field-Marshal Montgomery's forces versus those of German General Erwin Rommel through the early set-backs to the final defeat of the Afrika Korps at El Alamein. McMillan's clear and descriptive writing make the conflict in the Mediterranean region understandable, while bringing to life the experiences of the fighting soldier as well. The role of Allied air forces and navies in the Mediterranean theater are also detailed, with vivid descriptions of the author's experiences while on-board aircraft or ships.McMillan, a long-time European United Press correspondent, later went on to land with British troops in the Normandy invasion France. While covering the assault on Cherbourg he was wounded in the back by shrapnel. After a short time in England to recovery he returned to France and reported on the liberation of Paris, and remained with Allied troops as they advanced on the Rhine and into Germany.

Germany in Defeat Percy Knauth, Pierre van Paassen Pickle Partners Publishing, INscribe Digital, Chicago, 2019
Germany in Defeat, first published in 1946, is the first hand, detailed account of Germany at the end of World War Two by Time correspondent Percy Knauth. The book details Knauth's travels across the war-ravaged country: from Berlin to concentration camps including Buchenwald and Salispilz, from Hitler's bunker to his mountain retreat (the Berghof at Berchtesgaden), and his interviews with German, American, and Russian military officials and German civilians. His visit to Hitler's underground bunker in Berlin just days after Hitler committed suicide is a fascinating story, and his description of Buchenwald provides a unique, chilling look at the conditions and workings of the Nazi death camp.Percy Knauth, an American who attended school in Germany, worked first for the Chicago Tribune in Berlin, then for the New York Times. In 1942, he was the Paris Bureau Chief for Time magazine, and spent the next 28 years working for Time-Life publications in Paris, Berlin and New York. He retired as European editor in 1970 to devote his time to writing. Knauth died in 1995 at the age of 80.

lgli/Arthur Chase - Murder of a Missing Man (2019, Phocion Publishing).azw3
Murder of a Missing Man Arthur M Chase Phocion Publishing, INscribe Digital, Chicago, 2019
Murder of a Missing Man, first published in 1934 as a Red Badge Book, is a ‘golden-age'murder mystery, set largely aboard a passenger train traveling across southwestern America. From the dustjacket: “In this new mystery, the author develops an ingenious and original case in which the identity of the victim is as much a mystery as the identity of the murderer. At the outset, the reader is introduced to a highly dramatic tragedy in a fashionable New York hotel. Pierre Leland, notorious playboy and bon vivant, is murdered. The circumstances of the crime are revealed. Next the scene shifts to a Pullman coach of a transcontinental express, bound across the Texas deserts to California. Another crime, brutal and sinister, is committed. What is the connection between these two? Who are the people on this train, isolated from police machinery? Characteristic of this popular author, the incidents of this swift-moving story are cleverly and vividly drawn. There is a wealth of humor and satire in the depiction of the varied individuals that find themselves drawn together on that ill-fated Pullman car. There is, too, an abundance of thrills and a professionally neat puzzle to keep the reader constantly guessing.”

lgli/Across the Line - Albert Payson Terhune.epub
Across the Line Albert Payson Terhune; Anice Terhune Borodino Books, INscribe Digital, Chicago, 2018
Albert Payson Terhune was not only universally famous for his stories of the collies of Sunnybank: as readers of his The Son of God know, he was also of a deeply religious mind. Sometime before his death in February 1942, he made some rough notes for an article on a subject which had never ceased to concern him and which has absorbed the thoughts of human beings from time immemorial. As Rev. Dr. Sizoo remarks in the Foreword to this volume, "The human heart has always rebelled against the silence of death. Why should those whom we have loved and lost suddenly cease to be concerned about us and refuse to counsel and enhearten?... Are there any signals which flash back and forth? Do they know us? Can we speak with them? Are they concerned for us?" Anice Terhune, the author's wife, offers an affirmative answer to these questions in the notes and comments that form the greater part of the present book. Mrs. Terhune was the author of The Bert Terhune I Knew (1943) as well as of many short stories, articles, and of three novels among which are The Eyes of the Village and The White Mouse. Pianist, organist, and composer, she has published many books of children's songs. She was born in Hampden, Massachusetts, of an old New Jersey family, a direct descendant of Richard Stockton, signer of the Declaration of Independence.

The Secrets of Dr. Taverner Violet M. Firth (Dion Fortune) Pickle Partners Publishing, INscribe Digital, [San Francisco], 2016
Death hounds, shape shifters, and vampires are among the patients treated by the Holmes-like Dr. Taverner and his assistant Dr. Rhodes in this work of supernatural fiction by acclaimed spiritualist and occult writer Dion Fortune. First published in 1926, the adventures of Dr.Taverner and Dr. Rhodes take readers across the marshy moonlit fields of nightfall, hunting spirits and keeping watch over souls. Suffering from vampirism? Being stalked by a death hound? Haunted by past life debts? Family under a suicidal curse? From across the countryside patients and their desperate families come to seek treatment for unconventional diseases from an unconventional doctor. His secret? Treating the diseases of the occult. Though Fortune wrote The Secrets of Doctor Taverner as her first novel, she maintained that all the events were based on true occurrences. Many believe Taverner to be Fortune's own spiritual teacher, Dr. Moriarty, and Rhodes to be based on Fortune herself. An essential and fun read for anyone interested in the Western Mystery Tradition, Dion Fortune, the melding of medicine and magic, or just good old-fashioned paranormal fiction.

Hands of Mercy : The Story of Sister-Nurses in the Civil War Norah Smaridge Papamoa Press, INscribe Digital, [N.p.], 2018
<p>Six hundred nuns from twelve religious communities served as U.S. Army nurses during the Civil War. They served on the battlefield and gave their lives. A group of Sisters of Mercy traveling to St. Louis on a Union steamboat took fire from a Confederate gun battery and worked through it, tending the wounded. At Gettysburg one St. Joseph sister wiped the blood-covered face of a young soldier to discover that he was her 18 year-old brother. When the Sisters of Providence took over the military hospital in Indianapolis during the Civil War, they found that "it was dirty beyond belief. A scouring brigade was formed, and the nuns went down on their knees, scrubbing every inch of the stained and dirty floors. They washed walls and windows, threw out dirty mattresses, and soon had the wards clean and sweet-smelling. Next they set up kitchens, special diet kitchens, and a laundry."Soldiers, doctors, military officials, civilians—all learned to respect and admire the Sisters, who came to be known as the Sisters of Charity. In the years following the Civil War, nuns established 800 hospitals, the basis for a network of Catholic hospitals that now serves one in six patients, the largest private group in the U.S.This wonderful book by Norah Smaridge provides a glorious in-depth portrait of the many Sister-Nurses during the Civil War years.<br></p>

The Empress Elizabeth of Austria Karl Tschuppik, Eric Sutton (traslator) Borodino Books, INscribe Digital, [N.p.], 2017
This is the English translation of the 1929 German language biography of Empress Elisabeth of Austria, by Austrian journalist and writer Karl Tschuppik.Elisabeth of Austria (1837-1898) was the wife of Emperor Franz Joseph I, and thus Empress of Austria, Queen of Hungary and Queen consort of Croatia and Bohemia.Born into Bavarian royalty, Elisabeth (“Sisi”) enjoyed an informal upbringing before marrying Franz Joseph at the age of sixteen. The marriage thrust her into the much more formal Habsburg court life, for which she was ill-prepared and which she found uncongenial. Early in the marriage she was at odds with her mother-in-law, Princess Sophie, who took over the rearing of Elisabeth's daughters, one of whom, Sophie, died in infancy. The birth of a male heir, Rudolf, improved her standing at court considerably, but her health suffered under the strain, and she would often visit Hungary for its more relaxed environment. She came to develop a deep kinship with Hungary, and helped to bring about the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary in 1867.The death of her only son Rudolf, and his mistress Mary Vetsera, in a murder-suicide tragedy at his hunting lodge at Mayerling in 1889 was a blow from which Elisabeth never recovered. She withdrew from court duties and travelled widely, unaccompanied by her family. She was obsessively concerned with maintaining her youthful figure and beauty, demanding to be sewn into her leather corsets and spending two or three hours a day on her coiffure. While travelling in Geneva in 1898, she was stabbed to death by an Italian anarchist named Luigi Lucheni who selected her because he had missed his chance to assassinate Prince Philippe, Duke of Orléans, and wanted to kill the next member of royalty that he saw.Elisabeth was the longest serving Empress-consort of Austria, at 44 years.

Totem Tales of Old Seattle : Legends and Anecdotes Gordon Newell; DON SHERWOOD Barakaldo Books, INscribe Digital, [N.p.], 2020
TOTEM TALES OF OLD SEATTLE is the gaudy, primitive and hilarious collection of tales, legends and anecdotes that brings to life a willful, fun-loving frontier—and a city that's never been tamed. "This is a rollicking tale that makes you regret you weren't around to see the actual happenings of a hundred years ago. Today, however, nothing could be more fun than Gordon Newell's approach to what might be called, in the broad sense, 'history.' In addition to the tremendous amount of material, there is probably the most wondrous humor one could find!" "A glorious, gaudy, wondrous recital of Seattle days and ways....the most readable, ribald, irreverent city history that has ever been written"—William Hogan, San Francisco Chronicle "Like the Seattle of old, the book is gaudy, bawdy and sly."—Marine Digest "This book makes of Seattle a city to fascinate the citizens of New Orleans, New York or Dubuque."—Seattle Post Intelligencer

No bugles for spies; : tales of the OSS Lt.-Col. Robert Hayden Alcorn Pickle Partners Publishing, INscribe Digital, [Place of publication not identified], 2017
The unvarnished behind-the-scenes tale of the OSS—and the incredibly daring men and women who put their lives at stake in the most dangerous game of all.“By mid-1942, after a Washington shuffle, the Office of Coordinator of information had become the Office of Strategic Services. By then, Colonel, later General,'Wild Bill'Donovan, the'Wizard of OSS', was'sitting stop a lusty, burgeoning, dynamic organization stamped with its own imprint'. The story of how that organization grew, the sort of operatives and methods it employed, the schemes and techniques of financing its activities, and the things it was able to accomplish for the war effort still makes exciting reading, even this many years after the war. Alcorn served with the organization from its earliest days, with Donovan both directly and indirectly; his observations would indicate that the man was nearly unique in his ability to grasp quantities of detail. While Alcorn does not leave out some mention of prima donnas and other undesirable; who occasionally cropped up, and he is moderately censorious of MacArthur's refusal to let OSS operate freely in the Pacific theatre, his overall picture is one of uncommon harmony for such a complex effort. The emphasis is on people, rather than techniques, he has a real grasp of how to project human-interest material. The thrills, chills, and tears are well balanced, and the effect is exhilarating.”—Kirkus Reviews“One of the best”—Detroit News“The thrills, chills, and tears are well balanced, and the effect is exhilarating.”

Women in Antiquity Charles Theodore Seltman Pickle Partners Publishing, INscribe Digital, [N.p.], 2018
<p>WOMEN IN ANTIQUITY is mainly about women in those Mediterranean civilisations which are the root of ours. After touching on the life of women in Palaeolithic and Neolithic times, Dr. Seltman comes to the first urban civilisations in Mesopotamia and Egypt, where the exaltation of women was bound up with the religious attitude towards love-goddesses and mother-goddesses. He discusses nudity and the wearing of clothes; fertility rites and sacred prostitution; heroines of the Bible; the cult of Isis. Fascinating pages deal with the women of Minoan Crete and of the Heroic Age (as described by Homer and confirmed by archaeological discoveries). A chapter on Sparta refers to the custom of exposing feeble infants, the annual flagellation of boys, the athletic prowess of girls, and the social and sexual codes. Coming to Athens, he appraises slavery and gives an imaginary Socratic dialogue to show how a 5th-century Athenian would have felt about some of our present Western ideas. This leads to the question: "Why is our modern world so preoccupied with sex and sin?" Dr. Seltman tells of the false 19th-century concepts of Athenian life and the position of women, discusses the hetairai ('girl-friends'), and contrasts the attitudes of Aristophanes and Plato to women. A chapter entitled "The New Woman" deals with girl athletes as typified by the story of Atalanta. Then we see how women fared in the Hellenistic Age and in the time of the Roman Republic and Empire. The final chapters show how anti-feminism was developed by the Fathers of the Church and frankly discuss monasticism and celibacy. The book is fully documented, and the carefully chosen illustrations are exceptionally interesting.<br></p>

The Tide in the Attic Aleid Van Rhijn Muriwai Books, INscribe Digital, [Place of publication not identified], 2017
First published in its original Dutch version in 1953, this is the English translation of Een helicopter daalde, which tells the story of a family in the Netherlands caught up in the middle of the 1953 North Sea flood disaster, brought on by a heavy storm that occurred on the night of Saturday, 31 January 1953 and morning of Sunday, 1 February 1953. The floods struck the Netherlands, Belgium, England and Scotland.A combination of a high spring tide and a severe European windstorm over the North Sea caused a storm tide; the combination of wind, high tide, and low pressure led to a water level of more than 5.6 metres (18.4 ft) above mean sea level in some locations. The flood and waves overwhelmed sea defences and caused extensive flooding. The Netherlands, a country with 20% of its territory below mean sea level and 50% less than 1 metre (3.3 ft) above sea level and which relies heavily on sea defences, was worst affected, recording 1,836 deaths and widespread property damage. Most of the casualties occurred in the southern province of Zeeland.Although this book is classed as a children's novel, it will appeal to readers from eight to eighty years old.

Damon Runyon Favorites Damon Runyon; Walter Winchell Papamoa Press, INscribe Digital, [N.p.], 2018
MASTER OF THE MAIN STEM!Here are some stories by Damon Runyon—the man who, according to Walter Winchell, knows more about the Roaring Forties than any other writing man. Included are many of the stories that have made him famous. There are “Little Miss Marker,” “The Hottest Guy in the World,” and “Madame La Gimp,” who went Hollywood and became the celebrated Lady for a Day.You'll enjoy meeting some of Mr. Runyon's friends, socially. You'll like Harry the Horse and Spanish John and Little Isadore—hard characters, perhaps, but they would be hurt if you called them kidnapers. Then there's Big False Face, the Beer Baron. The police sent him to college at a place called Auburn, N. Y., and he also did post-graduate work at Ossining and Dannemora. And you'll meet Princess O'Hara and Goldberg, her horse, named after a guy who runs a delicatessen store on Tenth Avenue, and Last Card Louie, and The Brain himself. A veritable banquet is contained in these pages for all those who like their Runyon straight.

THE STORY, TOLD LARGELY BY HIMSELF, OF MARSHAL TITO OF YUGOSLAVIA—THE MAN WHOM STALIN MOST HATES AND FEARS THE FIRST BIG HOLE in the iron curtain was cut in 1948 by Marshal Tito and the Yugoslavian people when they walked out of the Cominform, defying Stalin, the Red Army, and Moscow’s secret police. This was the first rebellion of a Soviet satellite state. It is not likely to be the last. Here is the only authentic inside story of this decisive moment in modern history, told in the context of Tito’s life, with about forty per cent of the text in Tito’s own words, recorded by one of his closest friends. Here is the story of Tito’s personal relations with Stalin, how the leaders of the Communist world would drink and talk and joke with each other, how Stalin felt about the Communists in Greece and China, the true stories of Dimitrov, Gomulka, Anna Pauker and the fierce struggle for power which goes on among the rulers of the Communist world. No other man has seen this world on the top level and survived to tell it. It is told here in the exciting story of the life of an itinerant machinist who wandered around Europe, Russia and the revolutionary movement until Hitler’s attack on his country in 1941 threw him into leadership of the Yugoslav Partisan Army.

White Squaw : The True Story of Jennie Wiley Arville Wheeler Pickle Partners Publishing, INscribe Digital, [N.p.], 2016
THE TRUE STORY OF JENNIE WILEY—WHITE SQUAW Thomas and Jennie Wiley lived on Walker's Creek in Bland County, Virginia. In 1789 a small band of Indians attacked the Wiley cabin and killed Jennie's three older children and her brother. Jennie was taken captive along with her baby son. Quickly the Indians and their captives moved westward into what is now Kentucky. Jennie's only hope for herself and her child was to keep pace with her captors. The Indians moved northwest into the Big Sandy Valley of Kentucky. Unable to cross the flooded Ohio River, they retreated to a series of winter camps in present-day Carter, Lawrence and Johnson (Kentucky) Counties. With only a rock bluff for shelter Jennie spent the winter laboring as a slave. After almost a year in captivity Jennie escaped, miraculously evading pursuit as she made her way to a small settlement at Harman's Station on John's Creek where settlers helped her return to her husband. The author Arville Wheeler was inspired to write this book because his grandmother told him the story of Jennie Wiley when he was a child.

Licensed for Murder john Rhode @mystery_books_ar, 1958
Licensed for Murder , first published in 1958, is part of the series of mysteries featuring private detective Dr. Priestley. Author John Rhode, a pen name of Cecil Street (1884-1964), was a prolific writer of mostly detective novels, publishing more than 140 books between 1924 and 1961. Licensed for Murder concerns the new managers of an English country inn, who, during the inn's renovation, discover the grisly, burned remains of a man behind corrugated sheeting in the inn's main fireplace. With the man's identity impossible to determine, Superintendent Jimmy Waghorn calls on the now elderly Dr. Priestley for much needed assistance in solving this gruesome case of murder. Noted American mystery critic Anthony Boucher praised Licensed for Murder, writing in the New York Times that the "detection is competent; the murders have novelty and ingenuity to recommend them; and the background details on the management of a village inn are fascinating. Slow and heavy, but kind of nice."

Nine Men In Gray Charles L. Dufour Golden Springs Publishing, INscribe Digital, [N.p.], 2015
In this volume of biographical essays, all vividly written, extensively researched, Charles L. Dufour recounts the lives of nine Confederate officers, who served their cause with dedication, skill and bravery. “Porter Alexander is not a household name today, but he should be remembered as one of Robert E. Lee’s most valuable officers. Bold and imaginative, Alexander was an artillerist whose service was requested by every Confederate army commander. He and eight other “men in gray” come to life in vivid sketches by Charles L. Dufour. Singled out are Dick Taylor, the handsome son of former president Zachary Taylor who led the Louisiana Brigade; Turner Ashby, an expert horseman whose death in battle typified the doomed gallantry of the Rebels; Pat Cleburne of the Army of Tennessee, who was called “the Stonewall of the West”; “Savez” Read, a navy man who terrorized the Atlantic seaboard in a one-gun sailing vessel; Willie Pegram, a shy Virginian who was a bold cannoneer; Lucius B. Northrop, whose abrasive personality complicated his task of feeding the army; William Mahone, whose ferocious fighting spirit belied his bantam size; and Henry Hotze, who served brilliantly as a Confederate agent and propagandist.”-Print ed.

Speaking of Pianists Abram Chasins Burtyrki Books, INscribe Digital, [Place of publication not identified], 2020
The pianist, composer, music director of WOXR, contributor to the Saturday Review collects his reminiscences- and reactions stimulated by piano playing and piano music. So that his clavichord is well-tempered not only by his knowledge and feeling for its music, but also by his own association with many performers. He re-establishes Josef Hofmann as a great pianist and a greatly loved teacher; Rachmaninoff, the communicable and sumptuous melodist; Schnabel and Godowsky; the courtly Paderewski and the ebullient Rubinstein; Wanda Landowski and Backhaus, Gieseking and Serkin, Casadesus and Horowitz are all in this gallery of greats. He writes also of interpretation and teaching, of the ruthless stranglehold of concert management, of hi fidelity and its ""high fatality"" to the quality of recorded performances, and there is a substantial section of commentaries on particular works and composers- chiefly classical... Informed, but informally presented music appreciation which the general listener will enjoy- along with the contact with many concert pianists and the anecdotal asides (Kirkus Review)

After Its Kind : The first and last word on evolution, 4th ed. Byron C. Nelson, Th. M. Pickle Partners Publishing, INscribe Digital, [N.p.], 2017
The pages of this book are the product of years of study of a Bible-lover who has gone through the fiery furnace of skepticism and has come out firmly convinced of the scientific trustworthiness of the first chapter of the Book of Genesis. In this book are contained the conclusions of an examining and weighing of evidences and arguments for and against the theory of evolution which began when, as a young man in the University of Wisconsin, the author's Christian faith was almost destroyed by the wave of evolutionary philosophy and pseudo-science that has swept over the universities and colleges of our land. The incentive to write these pages was a desire to give to others the benefit of the author's personal experience. Having been fortunate or unfortunate enough to have been caught early in life in the maelstrom of religious uncertainty that catches so many in our day, due to the widespread discussion of evolution, and having been driven by a desire to know the truth, cost what it may, to follow every important evolutionary argument to its end, and then having finally concluded that nothing is so scientific as the Bible statement “after its kind,” the author believed that a work on the subject of evolution by him might meet the needs of some others who were undergoing an experience like his.

The Sod-house Frontier, 1854-1890 : A Social History of The Northern Plains: From the Creation of Kansas and Nebraska to The Admission of The Dakotas [Illustrated Everett Newfon Dick Barakaldo Books, INscribe Digital, [N.p.], 2020
"A hundred years ago the great prairie region now comprising the states of Kansas, Nebraska, and North and South Dakota was regarded as unfit for human habitation. As late as the middle of the last century the maps of the United States included it within 'The Great American Desert,' and successive waves of migration passed it by for what seemed more hospitable lands farther west. But now these prairie states, so completely ignored at first, have become one of the richest sections of the land, the agricultural heart of the country, and the seat, moreover, of a distinctive culture within the general American frame. The background of this culture, the conditions, problems, and struggles of pioneer life on the Sod-House Frontier from 1854 to 1890, is the theme of this important and fascinating book. In vivid detail, enriched with the fruit of exhaustive research, the author tells where the settlers came from, how they traveled, how they located themselves and built new homes, how they founded towns and industries, what hardships and calamities they endured, how they lived and worked and amused themselves, how democracy functioned among them, how they provided for education and developed social and political institutions. Here also are picturesque accounts of builders and outlaws, homesteaders and claim-jumpers, bankers and horse thieves, preachers and teachers, doctors and medicine men, lawyers and politicians - in short, the whole motley throng that made up frontier society. Here, too, is the epic story of the famers' triumph over hostile Indians, of how they withstood the menace of prairie fires, droughts, blizzards, and grasshoppers. Every page reveals some new and interesting aspect of frontier life, and the whole book bears the stamp of authenticity and sympathy in recreating the arduous days of a vanished era." Illustrated with 31 period drawings and photographs.

We Prisoners of War : Sixteen British Officers and Soldiers Speak From a German Prison Camp Tracy Strong Pickle Partners Publishing, INscribe Digital, Chicago, 2019
We Prisoners of War: Sixteen British Officers and Soldiers Speak from a German Prison Camp , first published in 1941, is a collection of brief essays written by POWs held in Germany during the early days of World War II. As noted in the Preface: Two years after the outbreak of hostilities, more than four million men are prisoners of war. They are living behind barbed-wire fences in all parts of the world ... What thoughts are in the minds of these captured men? We Prisoners of War is a partial answer to this question. These sixteen essays were originally submitted in an essay contest suggested by a Y.M.C.A. secretary who visits the camps regularly. They were not intended for publication or the eyes of the censor. Because of their unique insight into the minds of those facing despair “in a sea of stagnant idleness,” they are being printed in the interest of the prisoners themselves. Although these prisoners are shut in behind barbed wire in southern Germany, it is interesting to note the influence upon their thoughts of the life of the villages outside the wire. A bright carpet in a cottage, the visitors in the local beer garden, the glorious view of the Alps as seen through the barred windows, as well as the clanging of the church bells, the singing of the birds, and the memory of the young choirmaster, Mozart, who lived there—these are the prisoner's food for thought.

The Capture of Attu: A World War II Battle as Told By the Five Men Who Fought There Lt. Robert J. Mitchell Pickle Partners Publishing, INscribe Digital, [Place of publication not identified], 2017
<p>This book attempts to put the reader on the battlefield with the ground soldier. Men who fought on Attu, officers and enlisted men, told their stories to Lieutenant Robert J. Mitchell of the 32nd Infantry, one of the regiments engaged. Lieutenant Mitchell was wounded during the latter stage of the battle and while convalescing wrote the accounts which are now published as Part Two of the book. These stories tell of the discomforts and perils, the failures and successes, the fear and courage, the many fights between small groups and the occasional humor, of which battle consists. In preparing these accounts for publication, every effort has been made to keep them as nearly as possible in the exact form in which they were written down by Lieutenant Mitchell; consequently, a minimum of editorial changes has been made.Part One, written by Sewell T. Tyng, is an introduction in the form of a connected narrative of events leading up to the invasion of the Aleutian island of Attu and a detailed account of the battle which resulted in the capture of Attu by American forces. This narrative is based on official sources and on material collected by Captain Nelson L. Drummond, Jr., Field Artillery, formerly of the Alaska Defense Command. Captain Drummond visited Attu shortly after the battle, studied the terrain, and interviewed participants of all ranks. The volume has been prepared in the War Department under the supervision of the Military Intelligence Division. Aerial photographs are by the 11th Air Force; battle photographs are by the U.S. Army Signal Corps; and terrain feature photographs are by Captain Drummond, assisted by Private First Class A. E. Johnson, 50th Engineer Regiment. The panoramic sketch is based on an original by the 50th Engineer Regiment.<br></p>

Couching at the Door D. K. Broster Pickle Partners Publishing : Made available through hoopla, INscribe Digital, [N.p.], 2016
In this collection of dark, supernatural tales the esteemed author D. K. Broster gave full reign to her vivid imagination. Sometimes—as in "The Window" or "The Pestering," or "All Soul's Day"—these are what we might call 'explainable' ghost stories: apparitions or hauntings whose origin is to be found in some violent or unjust action in the past. Other stories, "Couching at the Door" and "From the Abyss," have little or no explanation, even in supernatural terms. Add to these an elegant reworking of the Persephone myth, "The Taste of Pomegranates," the downright bloodthirsty "Clairvoyance," and the psychological studies, "The Promised Land" and "The Pavement" which so well merit the heading 'Madness and Obsession', and you have a collection to disturb and unsettle the strongest nerves. Literary historian Jack Adrian describes Couching at the Door as "a pure masterwork, one of the most satisfying weird collections of the century".

Factors Affecting Joint Cooperation During The Civil War LCDR Timothy R. Hanley USN Golden Springs Publishing, United States, 2015
This study is a historical analysis of selected joint Army Navy operations conducted along the East Coast during the American Civil War. It begins with a description of the ante-bellum conditions of the Army and Navy and the organizational structure of the War and Navy Departments. Three joint operations are analyzed; the Fort Sumter Relief Expedition of 1861, the Port Royal Expedition of 1862, and the Charleston Campaign of 1863. In none of the joint operations covered by this study was there a unified command structure between the Army and Navy. Mutual support between the services was dependent upon voluntary cooperation between the respective service commanders. This study determines what factors influenced the degree of cooperation between the service commanders of joint operations during the Civil War. Many of the factors which either facilitated or hindered joint cooperation during that time could affect contemporary joint operations, particularly in the early stages before a unified command structure is established. An appreciation of those factors is both helpful in understanding the outcome of Civil War joint operations as well as providing some insight into the problems faced by contemporary commanders in a joint environment.

Mamma's Boarding House John Dennis Fitzgerald Pickle Partners Publishing, INscribe Digital, [N.p.], 2018
Mamma always had a way of treating everyone as a member of her own family, of giving warmth and comfort and love to people who had known little but loneliness and misfortune. And in the rugged Utah town of Adenville in the early years of this century, there were many who needed her compassion and generosity. So when Papa died and her own children were grown, it was natural for Mamma to open her home to others. Among her boarders were Sarah Martin, angular and tight-lipped, a schoolteacher who took to smoking cigars to win the man she loved...Alonzo Strang, a retired sea captain whose last heroic voyage was in a rowboat...the fastidious faro dealer, Floyd Thompson, who started going to church again so that he could stay at Mamma's dining table...Mr. Hackett, Papa's successor as editor of the Advocate, a bachelor so solitary he had almost forgotten how to live with others...and Judge Gibson, competing against the memory of a dead man for Mamma's love. Continuing his family reminiscences from the best-selling Papa Married a Mormon, John D. Fitzgerald presents a spirited picture of a frontier community. Adenville was a town where a gunfighter shot out his last battle strapped to a lamppost...where the townspeople singing Rock of Ages saved a man from being lynched...where a red-headed artist won his sweetheart in a mad chase across the Utah desert...and where honest conniving staved off an Indian raid. There are moments of suspense as the townspeople rescue a child from his deranged grandfather...moments of hilarity as a pig named Beatrice the Beautiful plays the part of Cupid...moments of terror as a vicious bully menaces the entire town...and many scenes of warm and affectionate family life in Mamma's boarding house. A poignant, humorous and exciting saga, illuminated by Mamma's radiant generosity and tolerance, Mamma's Boarding House is a worthy successor to the highly-praised Papa Married a Mormon.

Up from Liberalism William F. Buckley Jr.; Senator Barry M. Goldwater Pickle Partners Publishing, INscribe Digital, [N.p.], 2016
William Frank Buckley Jr.'s third book, originally published in 1959, is an urbane and controversial attack on the manners and meaning of American Liberalism in the 1950s. His thesis is that the leading American liberals can be shown, in their speeches and statements, in the tacit premises that underlie their words and deeds, to be suffering from a long, but definable list of social and philosophical prejudices. "Up From Liberalism" examines the root assumptions of the Liberalism of his era and asks the startling question: do the actions of prominent liberalism derive from the attributes of Liberalism? "This book of mind and heart, wit and eloquence, by the chief spokesman for the young conservative revival in this country, must be read and understood, to understand what is going on in America."—Senator Barry Goldwater "A guide for Americans who want to stay free in a country where pressures against individual freedom are coming from every direction."—Charleston Nines & Courier "He is at top form...clear and penetrating...A slashing attack against the thinking of today's pseudo-liberals."—Colorado Springs Gazette Telegraph "The most exciting book of the Fall."—New York Mirror "Mr. Buckley is one of the most articulate of the critics of today's liberalism and deserves to be heard."—Washington Star "Buckley brilliantly excoriates a philosophy he calls liberalism."—Newsweek "A skilled debater, a trenchant stylist...a man of agile and independent mind...He belongs in the great American tradition of protest and he deserve his audience."—New York Herald Tribune

The Hell Bomb William L. Laurence Pickle Partners Publishing, INscribe Digital, [Place of publication not identified], 2018
In April 1945, Pulitzer Prize-winning U.S. science journalist William L. Laurence was summoned to the secret Los Alamos laboratory in New Mexico by General Leslie Groves to serve as the official historian of the Manhattan Project. In this capacity he also served as author of many of the first official press releases about nuclear weapons, including some delivered by the Department of War and President Harry S. Truman. Laurence was the only journalist present at the Trinity test in July 1945, and beforehand prepared statements to be delivered in case the test ended in a disaster which killed those involved. As part of his work related to the Project, he also interviewed the airmen who flew on the mission to drop the atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima, Japan. Laurence himself flew aboard the B-29 The Great Artiste, which served as a blast instrumentation aircraft, for the atomic bombing of Nagasaki. He visited the Test Able site at Bikini Atoll aboard the press ship, ‘Appalachian,’ for the bomb test on July 1, 1946. In his book The Hell Bomb, Laurence warns about the use of a cobalt bomb—a form of hydrogen bomb that, at the time of first publication in 1951, was still an untested device—which was engineered to produce a maximum amount of nuclear fallout. “I FIRST heard about the hydrogen bomb in the spring of 1945 in Los Alamos, New Mexico, where our scientists were putting the finishing touches on the model-T uranium, or plutonium, fission bomb. I learned to my astonishment that, in addition to this work, they were already considering preliminary designs for a hydrogen-fusion bomb, which in their lighter moments they called the “Super-duper” or just the “Super.” “I can still remember my shock and incredulity when I first heard about it [...]. Could anything be more powerful, I found myself thinking, than a weapon that, on paper at least, promised to release an explosive force of 20,000 tons of TNT?....”

Critical Thinking : an Introduction to Logic and Scientific Method. Black, Max Muriwai Books, INscribe Digital, [N.p.], 2018
I Have Tried To Make This Book An Argument, Not A Catalogue Of Dogmas. Its Ideal Reader Will Find Himself Constantly Asking Questions, For Which He Will Insist On Finding His Own Answers. To Avoid Wasting His Time, I Have Made The Fullest Use Of Authentic Illustrations From Newspapers, Books, And Other Contemporary Sources. One Of The Wisest Things Ever Said About Our Subject Is That “logic, Like Whiskey, Loses Its Beneficial Effect When Taken In Too Large Doses.” While Bearing This Constantly In Mind, I Have Also Aimed At A High Level Of Accuracy And The Inclusion Of Nothing That Would Have To Be Unlearnt At A More Advanced Level Of Study. This Book Could Never Have Been Written Without The Help Of The Students To Whom I Have Lectured On Logic And Scientific Method. My Chief Obligations Are To Them. Logic Ought To Be Easy, Interesting, And Enjoyable. This Book Will Have Been Successful If It Helps Some Readers To Find It So.—prof. Max Black
