Toward Consilience : The Bioneurological Basis of Behavior, Thought, Experience, and Language Gerald A. Cory Jr. (auth.) Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2000, 2012
The present work is the second in a series constituting an extension of my doctoral thesis done at Stanford in the early 1970s. Like the earlier work, The Reciprocal Modular Brain in Economics and Politics, Shaping the Rational and Moral Basis ofOrganization, Exchange, and Choice (Plenum Publishing, 1999), it may also be considered to respond to the call for consilience by Edward O. Wilson. I agree with Wilson that there is a pressing need in the sciences today for the unification of the social with the natural sciences. I consider the present work to proceed from the perspective of behavioral ecology, specifically a subfield which I choose to call interpersonal behavioral ecology th Ecology, as a general field, has emerged in the last quarter of the 20 century as a major theme of concern as we have become increasingly aware that we must preserve the planet whose limited resources we share with all other earthly creatures. Interpersonal behavioral ecology, however, focuses not on the physical environment, but upon our social environment. It concerns our interpersonal behavioral interactions at all levels, from simple dyadic one-to-one personal interactions to our larger, even global, social, economic, and political interactions. Toward a Cognitive Classical Linguistics : the Embodied Basis of Constructions in Greek and Latin Mocciaro, Egle ;Short, William Michael (eds.) De Gruyter Open Poland, 2019 dec 31
This volume gathers a series of papers that bring the study of grammatical and syntactic constructions in Greek and Latin under the perspective of theories of embodied meaning developed in cognitive linguistics. Building on the momentum currently enjoyed by cognitive-functional approaches to language within the field of Classics, its contributors adopt, in particular, a ‘constructional’ approach that treats morphosyntactic constructions as meaningful in and of themselves. Thus, they are able to address the role of human cognitive embodiment in determining the meanings of linguistic phenomena as diverse as verbal affixes, discourse particles, prepositional phrases, lexical items, and tense semantics in both Greek and Latin. Public Sphere and Experience: Toward an Analysis of the Bourgeois and Proletarian Public Sphere (Theory and History of Literature) Oskar Negt and Alexander Kluge; foreword by Miriam Hansen; translated by Peter Labanyi, Jamie Owen Daniel, and Assenka Oksiloff University of Minnesota Press, Theory and history of literature ;, v. 85, Minneapolis, Minnesota, 1993
The “public sphere” is a key concept in political discourse, designating a space for political action. But is this a single authoritative and universal space in which various positions compete for recognition, or does it consist of multiple local spaces spread over diverse collectivities? In Kluge and Negt’s groundbreaking book they examine the material conditions of experience in an arena that had previously figured only as an abstract term: the media of mass and consumer culture. With a new, up-to-date introduction from Alexander Kluge. ** Review Oskar Negt is an award-winning filmmaker, a TV producer, theorist and editor, and owner of the Development Company for Television Production and Cairos Film Company. A student of Theodor Adorno and assistant to Jurgen Habermas, he is now Professor of Sociology at the University of Hannover. Alexander Kluge is one of the major German fiction writers of the late-20th century as well as film-maker, director, screenwriter and an important social critic. A contemporary of Theodor Adorno, he has won almost every German literary award, including the triennial Adorno prize in 2009. About the Author Alexander Kluge is one of the major German fiction writers of the late twentieth century as well as filmmaker, director, screenwriter and an important social critic. The German term Öffentlichkeit encompasses a variety of meanings that elude its English rendering as "public sphere." Like the latter, it implies to a spatial concept, the social sites or arenas where meanings are articulated, distributed, and negotiated, as well as the collective body constituted by and in this process, "the public." But Öffentlichkeit also denotes an ideational substance or criterion-"glasnost" or openness (which has the same root in German, "offen")-that is produced both within these sites and in larger, deterritorialized contexts; the English word "publicity" grasps this sense only in its historically alienated form. In the dialectical tension between these two senses, Negt and Kluge develop their concept of Öffentlichkeit as the "general horizon of social experience.

Thought and experience : themes in the philosophy of mind. Book 4 Imagination and creativity Sean Crawford; Carolyn Price; Alex Barber; Michael Beaney; Keith Frankish; Open University Open University Worldwide, AA308, Thought and experience : themes in the philosophy of mind -- bk. 4, AA308, Thought and experience : themes in the philosophy of mind -- bk. 4., Second edition., Milton Keynes, England, 2010
This Book Deals With The Nature Of Consciousness. Many Philosophers And Psychologists Today Believe That The Mind Is A Physical Phenomenon, Whose Processes Can Be Explained In Scientific Terms. Consciousness Presents The Biggest Challenge To This View (the So-called 'hard Problem' For A Science Of The Mind). Can The Physical Sciences Really Explain The Nature Of Conscious Experience-the Way It Feels To Have A Throbbing Headache, Or See A Sunset, Or Smell Freshly Ground Coffee? Or Is There More To These Experiences Than A Physical Account Can Ever Capture? If Consciousness Is Non-physical, Then It Is Hard To See How It Can Have Effects Within The Physical World. But If It Is Physical, Then Why Does It Seem So Different From Other Physical Phenomena? And What Physical Processes Does It Involve? Is The Feel Of A Conscious Experience Just A Matter Of What It Represents? Does Consciousness Involve A Form Of Inner Awareness? Finally, Could It Be That Our View Of Consciousness Is Mistaken? Do We Need To Rethink Some Of Our Fundamental Assumptions About It? These Questions Go To The Heart Of Our Conception Of Ourselves And Our Place In The Universe, And Are The Subject Of Vigorous Debate Among Contemporary Philosophers.

Beyond Individualism : Toward a New Understanding of Self, Relationship, and Experience Gordon Wheeler GICPress ; Distributed by Analytic Press, 1 edition, May 1, 2000
In this pathbreaking and provocative new treatment of some of the oldest dilemmas of psychology and relationship, Gordon Wheeler challenges the most basic tenet of the West cultural tradition: the individualist self. Characteristics of this self-model are our embedded yet pervasive ideas that the individual self precedes and transcends relationship and social field conditions and that interpersonal experience is somehow secondary and even opposed to the needs of the inner self. Assumptions like these, Wheeler argues, which are taken to be inherent to human nature and development, amount to a controlling cultural paradigm that does considerable violence to both our evolutionary self-nature and our intuitive self-experience. He asserts that we are actually far more relational and intersubjective than our cultural generally allows and that these relational capacities are deeply built into our inherent evolutionary nature. His argument progresses from the origins and lineage of the Western individualist self-model, into the basis for a new model of the self, relationship, and experience out of the insights and implications of Gestalt psychology and its philosophical derivatives, deconstructivism and social constructionism. From there, in a linked series of experiential chapters, each of them a groundbreaking essay in its own right, he takes up the essential dynamic themes of self-experience and relational life: interpersonal orientation, meaning-making and adaptation, support, shame, intimacy, and finally narrative and gender, culminating in considerations of health, ethics, politics, and spirit. The result is a picture and an experience of self that is grounded in the active dynamics of attention, problem solving, imagination, interpretation, evaluation, emotion, meaning-making, narration, and, above all, relationship. By the final section, the reader comes away with a new sense of what it means to be human and a new and more usable definition of health.

Language and human nature : toward a grammar of interaction and discourse Harvey B. Sarles University Of Minnesota Press, Studies in semiotics ;, v. 13., Minneapolis, Minnesota, 1985
Language and Human Nature was first published in 1977 as After Metaphysics: Toward a Grammar of Interaction and Discourse and was reissued under the present title in 1985. Language, in Western thought, is the major metaphor for all that we consider truly and uniquely human. It is what separates us from other species and makes human society possible. Language has been taken to be an aspect of the mind -- the seat of logic, rationality, and objectivity; study of language has focused on its formal aspects -- structure and grammar. In recent years, language has come to seem an independent object, unconnected to either our bodies or the world around us. In Language and Human Nature, Harvey Sarles challenges those views of language; his aim is to explore the foundation of the concept of language and to suggest alternative ways of thinking about both language and what is human in human nature. The subjects of these fourteen essays range from the unexamined assumptions embedded in the academic discipline of language study, to the dynamics of facial expression, to the question of whether an extraterrestrial being could discover human language; but two themes emerge: First, the Western notion of language historically has been used to justify or defend particular political, religious, and metaphysical theories. Its use as the definition of "humanness" has profound implications for our relations with those excluded -- other species, and humans with impaired language ability. Second, the focus on the mind has led to a narrow definition of language that ignores the enormous communicative power of the body. Recognition of the body's role allows language to be defined more broadly as communication and interaction. The reification of language in the traditional approach, Sarles argues, has severely limited research and has led to static formulations of linguistic and social problems. Language and Human Nature was first published in

The Systemic View as a Basis for Philological Thought (Studies in Slavic, Baltic, and Eastern European Languages and Cultures) Mikhail Rybakov; Olʹga Ivanovna Valentinova; Sergey Preobrazhenskii; Vladimir Nikiforovič Denisenko; Walker R. Thompson; Nicolas Jansens; Olga Barash Lexington Books/Fortress Academic, Studies in Slavic, Baltic, and Eastern European languages and cultures, Lanham, Maryland, 2021
In The Systemic View as a Basis for Philological Thought, Olga Valentinova, Vladimir Denisenko, Sergey Preobrazhenskii, and Mikhail Rybakov explore the interrelation of language material, structure, and functions in various subjects of philological research, such as grammatical systems of language, semantics, linguistic personality, literary text, and formal aspects of verse. Their systemic approach is rooted in the theories of Wilhelm von Humboldt and his followers, including Russian scholars Alexander Potebnya, Gustav Shpet, and more recently Gennadii Prokop'evichMel'nikov (1928-2000). The authors use the concept of systematicity as an opportunity to see the studied whole in development, to show and explain the functional interaction of linear and supra-linear connections, to explain their interdependence, and to predict further changes within the system. This book displays the scientific potential of the systemic approach to linguistics and related spheres, employing the framework of systematicity to revise the modern trends of philology and to map out an alternative paradigm for linguistic and philological thought that could restore the status of philology as a holistic science.ISBN : 9781793647719

The Cognitive Basis of Institutions: A Synthesis of Behavioral and Institutional Economics (Perspectives in Behavioral Economics and the Economics of Behavior) Shinji Teraji Academic Press, Incorporated, Perspectives in behavioral economics and the economics of behavior, London, United Kingdom, 2018
Societies display large differences in economic performance. The institu- tional characteristics of societies underlie these differences. From a cognitive viewpoint, this book asks: what are institutions and how do they evolve? The book highlights some basic mechanisms of interaction between mental phe- nomena and institutions. Understanding institutions is ultimately about understanding how we think. Institutions are a matter of the mind. The mind is not a completely exter- nal object of analysis. Behavioral decision theory can enhance the analysis of institutional features. Since institutions are composed of individuals who are subject to heuristics and biases, institutions and their decision-making rules can either magnify or mitigate the impact of heuristics and biases. Furthermore, in an institutional position, its decision-making rules and proce- dures may themselves lead to the emergence and reinforcement of heuristics and biases. Institutional structures are complex: individual elements are inter- dependent and self-organizing. Past experience is encapsulated in institu- tional rules. By following rules, individuals reduce their uncertainty about the possible outcomes that their social interactions can bring about. Institutions then become uncertainty-reducing devices.

nexusstc/Applied Behavior Science in Organizations: Consilience of Historical and Emerging Trends in Organizational Behavior Management/08e5178725db9decc7b5c7454fceff51.pdf
Applied Behavior Science in Organizations : Consilience of Historical and Emerging Trends in Organizational Behavior Management Ramona A. Houmanfar (editor), Mitch Fryling (editor), Mark P. Alavosius (editor) Taylor & Francis Group; Routledge, Behavior science, 1st, London :, 2021
__Applied Behavior Science in Organizations__ provides a compelling overview of the history of Organizational Behavior Management (OBM) and the opportunity it presents for designing and managing positive work environments that can in turn have a positive impact on society. The book brings together leading experts from industry and research settings to provide an overview of the historical approaches in Organizational Behavior Management. It begins with an introduction to recognized practices in OBM and the applications of fundamental principles of behavior analysis to a variety of performance problems in organizational settings. The book then highlights how organizational practices and consumers’ behavior combine in a complex confluence to meet an organization’s goals and satisfy consumer appetites, whilst often unintentionally affecting the wellbeing of organizational members. It argues that the science of behavior has a responsibility to contribute to the safety, health and wellbeing of organizational members, consumers of organizational products, and beyond. Finally, the book recognizes the essential role of organizations in initiating, shaping, and sustaining the development of more nurturing and reinforcing work environments, through discussion of the need for innovation while adapting and responding to growing social upheaval, technological advances, and environmental concerns, alongside crises in the global economy, health, education, and environment. Showcasing emerging work by internationally recognized scholars on the application of behavior science in organizations, the book will be an essential read for all students and professionals of Organizational Behavior Management, as well as those interested in using organizational applications to create new models of management.

TOWARD A HISTORY OF JEWISH THOUGHT the soul, resurrection, and the afterlife;the soul, resurrection, and the afterlife Zachary Alan Starr; Lightning Source (Tier 4), Lightning Source (Tier 4), Eugene, Oregon, 2020
"The work is a history of Jewish beliefs regarding the concept of the soul, the idea of resurrection, and the nature of the afterlife. The work describes these beliefs, accounts for the origin of these beliefs, discusses the ways in which these beliefs have evolved, and explains why the many changes in belief have occurred. Views about the soul, resurrection, and the afterlife are related to other Jewish views and to broad movements in Jewish thought; and Jewish intellectual history is placed within the context of the history of Western thought in general. That history begins with the biblical period and extends to the present time"--Back cover

nexusstc/Class and Property in Marx’s Economic Thought: Exploring the Basis for Capitalism/456fdf05c59dbf5a36a7f8eed32cab14.pdf
Class and Property in Marx's Economic Thought: Exploring the Basis for Capitalism (Routledge Frontiers of Political Economy) Jorgen Sandemose Routledge, Taylor & Francis Group, Taylor & Francis (Unlimited), Abingdon, Oxon, 2018
"This book presents the capitalist system as a function of the interaction of the three basic classes in the capitalist social formation. Through this, it shows how the corresponding conflicts and clashes of interests between those classes -- industrial capitalists, wage labourers and landed proprietors -- are unavoidable for understanding contemporary economic structures. Analysing these economic structures in relation to the forms of property ownership, as well as the typical processes of production connected with them, the author points out how Karl Marx's theory of the capitalist social formation is closely connected with the emergence and existence of a national money market. At the same time, the book places a special emphasis on Marx's theory of ground rent and modern landed property, an aspect misinterpreted by many authors; and through an evaluation of the most important Marxian categories regarding the analysis of the world market and its development, further emphasis is placed on the concept of differences in labour intensity between nations. This evaluation illustrates how the main categories of capital, wage labour and landed property acquire a completely different internal relation in poor countries compared to Western capitalist societies. Class and Property in Marx's Economic Thought aims at exposing a method for analysing contemporary capitalism through focusing on the basic relations of population groups in the capitalist social formation. It will be of interest to students and researchers within the field of economics, as well as other social sciences" -- From the publisher

<p>""The unsurpassed heuristic work of medieval German studies - indispensable for all medieval disciplines including even the history of medicine. The work not only extensively documents the current state of research within the defined framework, the changes in the articles between Vol. 1 and Vol. 11 reveal how research and presentation methods have become more precise. In its organisation, the work carries on from the first edition (1933-1955); it is, however, broader in scope and has been completely reworked by numerous international scholars to represent (and often to establish) the present state of research.<br></p><p>The term 'literature' as used here encompasses all writing with the exception of archival records, and thus includes not only 'belles-lettres' but also practical and occasionally ecclesiastical, legal, historical, scientific, medical, technical and commercial texts. The dictionary contains all known authors writing in German with their works, a broad selection of authors from the German language area writing in Latin, and all prominent anonymous works. Less prominent German anonymous works are included in articles on representative manuscript collections, on the reception of important Latin authors from Antiquity and the Middle Ages in translation, quotation and glossaries, and in some cases feature in wide-ranging thematic overviews. In all the articles, particular importance is attached to an account of the transmission of the works.<br></p>

How to Understand Everything: Consilience: A New Way to See the World Tom Beakbane Beakbane Publishing, 1, PT, 2021
Are you sometimes puzzled by how people behave? There is a new way to understand human beings — and everything else. It’s known as consilience . Consilience is a new paradigm that reveals how things self-organize from the bottom up – in contrast to how we think and communicate, which is from the top down. This new paradigm exposes the realities of human nature on both personal and collective levels revealing the overlap between different domains of life: family, health, business, technology, politics, and spirituality. Consilience will help you see things differently – and make people less puzzling. Set off on a mind-altering journey with Tom Beakbane, president of Beakbane: Brand Strategies & Communications Inc. , who has helped generate over $5 billion in brand value for his clients, and discover a new way to see the world.

Sources Of Consciousness: The Biophysical And Computational Basis Of Thought The Biophysical and Computational Basis of Thought Herbert Sydney Green, Terry T. Triffet World Scientific Publishing Company, Advanced Series in Neuroscience, Advanced Neuroscience (Book 5), 1997
The phenomenon of consciousness has long been one of the great mysteries of life, perhaps because it is inexplicable in terms of the deterministic theories of classical science. Today there is some consensus that the key to the understanding of the workings of the mind should be sought in the area of indeterministic quantum mechanics, but until recently there has been little substantial progress in unravelling the mystery. This book is the culmination of several decades of research by the authors in the physical sciences, neurosciences and computer sciences, with comprehensive summaries and references to related work by many other scientists, and presents important advances toward solving the problem. Written for the most part in plain language but supported by appropriate symbolism, the book is truly interdisciplinary, designed for the needs of a wide variety of students and scholars.-- Publisher description

Public sphere and experience : toward an analysis of the bourgeois and proletarian public sphere Alexander Kluge, Oskar Negt, Miriam Hansen Verso Books, Penguin Random House LLC (Publisher Services), London, 2016
Toward a Concrete Philosophy: Heidegger and the Emergence of the Frankfurt School (Signale: Modern German Letters, Cultures, and Thought) Mikko Immanen Cornell University Press and Cornell University Library, Signale : modern German letters, cultures, and thought, Ithaca [New York, 2020
Toward a Concrete Philosophy explores the reactions of Theodor Adorno, Max Horkheimer, and Herbert Marcuse to Martin Heidegger prior to their dismissal of him once he turned to the Nazi party in 1933. Mikko Immanen provides a fascinating glimpse of the three future giants of twentieth-century social criticism when they were still looking for their philosophical voices. By reconstructing their overlooked debates with Heidegger and Heideggerians, Immanen argues that Adorno, Horkheimer, and Marcuse saw Heidegger's 1927 magnum opus, Being and Time , as a serious effort to make philosophy relevant for life again and as the most provocative challenge to their nascent materialist diagnoses of the discontents of European modernity. Our knowledge of Adorno's "Frankfurt discussion" with "Frankfurt Heideggerians" remains anecdotal, even though it led to a proto-version of Dialectic of Enlightenment 's idea of the entwinement of myth and reason. Similarly, Horkheimer's enthusiasm over Heidegger's legendary post–World War I lectures and criticism of Being and Time have escaped attention almost entirely. And Marcuse's intriguing debate with Heidegger over Hegel and the origin of the problematic of "being and time" has remained uncharted until now. Reading these debates as fruitful intellectual encounters rather than hostile confrontations, Toward a Concrete Philosophy offers scholars of critical theory a new, thought-provoking perspective on the emergence of the Frankfurt School as a rejoinder to Heidegger's philosophical revolution.

Religious and Poetic Experience in the Thought of Michael Oakeshott Glenn Worthington
Much of the scholarly attention attracted by Michael Oakeshott’s writings has focused upon his philosophical characterisation of the relations that constitute moral association in the modern world. A less noticed, but equally significant, aspect of Oakeshott’s moral philosophy is his account of the type of person (or persona) required to enter into and enjoy moral association. Oakeshott’s best known characterisation of the persona best suited to moral association occurs in his identification of a ‘morality of the individual’. The book argues that Oakeshott’s characterisations of religious and poetic experience provide a more detailed account of the type of persona that emerged in response to what it perceived as an invitation to participate in moral association in the modern world.
