Reading God's handwriting : poems Philip C. Kolin St. Simons Island, Georgia: Kaufmann Publishing, St. Simons Island, Georgia, Georgia, 2012
In his new volume Reading God s Handwriting Philip Kolin has once again heard the whisper of God s word with the ear of his heart and given poetic expression to the timeless value of that word. His writing reflects a sense of reverence that seeks to distill the Divine Word of God and assimilate it into his very being. In the monastic tradition this process is called lectio divina. Such words take up their dwelling and have meaning only in the repetitive process of a hearing that leads to a listening, a pondering, and then, after assimilation, is given expression in the life and activity of the individual. As if praying, Philip has taken it one step farther and given expression in poetic words of profound insight and readability. One who has familiarity with the Bible, the Word of God, will read his poems with delight and will relish the sense of oneness between the writer and the word he has written. His poems offer a treasure of insight and could easily be used as a resource for personal prayer and lectio.-- Abbot Cletus Meagher, O.S.B. St. Bernard Abbey, Cullman, Alabama

Mysteries and Stations in the Manner of Ignatius Pavel Chichikov Kaufmann Publishing, St. Simons Island, Georgia, August 15, 2005
These Christian poems of meditation help every reader anticipate the joyful goal at the end of the journey. The Stations of the Cross are way-points along Jesus' path of sacrifice, suffering, and death. We go with Him even to the Tomb. Afterward, there is a garden, and a gardener who is the ascending Christ, our Lord and God. The Mysteries of the Rosary help us to relive His life, from before its beginning in Nazareth to His destiny in the eternal Kingdom. By prayerful attentiveness we come to share more fully in the life, works, death, and resurrection of the Son of Man.

As the wife of a frequently absent slaveholder and public figure, Anna Matilda Page King (1798-1859) was the de facto head of their Sea Island plantation. This volume collects more than 150 letters to her husband, children, parents, and others. Untypically, she was also schooled by her father in all aspects of plantation management, from seed cultivation to building construction. That grounding would serve her well. By 1842 her husband's properties were seized, owing to debts amassed from crop failures, economic downturns, and extensive investments in land, enslaved workers, and the development of the nearby port town of Brunswick. Anna and her family were sustained, however, by Retreat, the St. Simons Island property left to her in trust by her father. With the labor of fifty bondpeople and their increase she was to strive, with little aid from her husband, to keep the plantation solvent.

A valuable record of King's many roles, from accountant to mother, from doctor to horticulturist, the letters also reveal much about her relationship with, and attitudes toward, her enslaved workers. Historians have yet to fully understand the lives of plantation mistresses left on their own by husbands pursuing political and other professional careers. Anna Matilda Page King's letters give us insight into one such woman who reluctantly entered, but nonetheless excelled in, the male domains of business and agriculture.

St. Simons Island, Georgia (Images of America Series) Pat Morris, Patricia Morris Arcadia Publishing, Images of America: a history of American life in images and texts, Charleston, S.C, 2003

From the days of early tribes that hunted and fished to the tourists who later relaxed on the beaches, St. Simons Island has been part of the changing landscape of Georgia's coast. When Gen. James E. Oglethorpe established Fort Frederica to protect Savannah and the Carolinas from the threat of Spain, it was, for a short time, a vibrant hub of British military operations. During the latter part of the 1700s, a plantation society thrived on the island until the outbreak of the War Between the States. Never returning to an agricultural community, by 1870 St. Simons re-established itself with the development of a booming timber industry. And by the 1870s, the pleasant climate and proximity to the sea drew visitors to St. Simons as a year-round resort. Although the causeway had brought large numbers of summer people to the island, St. Simons remained a sleepy little place with only a few hundred permanent residents until 1941.

The Everglades : river of grass by Marjory Stoneman Douglas; illustrated by Robert Fink St. Simons Island, GA: Mockingbird Books, Rev. ed, St. Simons Island, GA, 1986 printing, ©1947
Before 1947, when Marjory Stoneman Douglas named the Everglades a “river of grass,” most people considered the area a worthless swamp. She brought the world’s attention to the need to preserve the Everglades. In the Afterword of this edition, Michael Grunwald gives an update of what has happened to the Everglades since then. Grunwald points out that in 1947 the government was in the midst of establishing the Everglades National Park and turning loose the Army Corps of Engineers to control floods—both of which seemed like saviors for the Glades. But neither turned out to be the answer. Working from the research he did for his book, The Swamp, Grunwald offers an account of what went wrong and the many attempts to fix it, beginning with Save Our Everglades, which Douglas declared was “not nearly enough.” Grunwald then lays out the intricacies (and inanities) of the more recent and ongoing CERP, the hugely expensive Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan.

Reel and Rout Monks, Robert A. G., 1933- Saint Simons Island [Ga.]: Brook Street Press, Saint Simons Island [Ga.], Georgia, 2004
REEL AND ROUT is a timely novel that exposes the backroom and boardroom shenanigans that plague corporations and that have led to a daily dose of headlines and scandals. From Enron to Global Crossing to ImClone we are inundated with the suspicion that all is not right with the business world. Filled with colorful New York lawyers, inept trustees, avaricious bankers, and even a few devoted public servants who care about more than the latest sex scandal, REEL AND ROUT is a tale of greed gone wild but in a world where some try to accomplish good. The protagonist, Cedric "Drive" Rhodes, is the aging South African CEO of the worlds most powerful media company and he is anxious to do one last deal. Over the years he has taken his experience in the family newspaper business, a stint in Hollywood, and in television to sculpt a global powerhouse that is both feared and admired. Drive believes he is the smartest CEO who ever lived and this deal will prove it. He will do the impossible. He will acquire, in a hostile takeover, a beloved corporate icon, THE AMERICAN OBSERVER, at one time the most widely read and translated magazine in the world. But THE AMERICAN OBSERVER has fallen on bad times. Circulation is down, revenues are diminished, and the stock price has plummeted. With a cadre of colorful characters, Drive Rhodes goes to work on the most challenging of transactions a foreigner taking over an American institution. Robert Monks has spent his career in public service and business advocating for responsible behavior from all parties involved in the global corporation executives, board members, and shareholders large and small. This lifetime of experience has been brilliantly translated into a novel that is insightful and persuasive.

At home on St. Simons Price, Eugenia Atlanta, Ga. : Peachtree Publishers, 1st ed., Atlanta, Ga, Georgia, 1981
v, 90 pages : 24 cm The millions who have read Eugenia Price's novels know that central to each of her stories is a strong, deeply rooted sense of place, and readers quickly fall in love with Price's settings. For thirty years, faithful readers followed Price to the vivid worlds of her Georgia trilogy, her Florida trilogy, her Savannah quartet, and her many other novels. Her stories of local people and the homes where their stories unfold easily become familiar, loved places. "That a house, a locale, is central to all my novels, makes good sense," Ms. Price believed. "I am and have always been almost overly sensitive to the house, the place in which I live. Finding St. Simons Island changed my very lifeits tempo, its basic simple quality, even my own capacity for lasting relationships." In this book, Eugenia Price shares with her worldwide reading public some of what life was like during the first years in which she and her best friend and fellow writer, Joyce Blackburn, were becoming Islanders. "These short pieces," she said, "include my observations day by day of what it was like at last to be at home on St. Simons. We were learning how to be neighbors, after so many years of complex life in the huge northern city of Chicago; learning how to care deeply for people with whom, at first glance, we had little in common. We were understanding what it really meant to come home." Eugenia Price, called by many St. Simons' own "beloved invader," here shows readers those early years as they were being lived. Her cherished St. Simons Memoir was written from memory and notes in old desk calendars, but At Home on St. Simons illuminates some of the experiences which most shaped and changedEugeniawritten as they occurred In the opening chapter, Ms. Price attempts to explainalmost as though to herselfwhy, in the face of such drastic change on the small, once provincial island on the Georgia coast , she is still at home on St. Simons. Her emotional connection to the island and her sense of place absorb local St. Simons readers as well as those who have never seen the island firsthand Millions have read Eugenia Price's books, which have been translated into more than fifteen languages. The formative, poignant moments related in At Home on St. Simons bring a universal appeal to this singular volume that retraces the beginning of Price's real-life love for St. Simons Island

Voices From St. Simons: Personal Narratives Of An Island's Past (real Voices, Real History) edited by Stephen Doster John F Blair Pub; John F. Blair, Winston-Salem, N.C, North Carolina, 2008
Mile for mile, St. Simons Islandone of Georgias Golden Islesboasts as much history as any community on the East Coast. Originally an Indian hunting ground, it has been occupied or invaded by Spanish missionaries, British settlers, planters and their slaves, the Union army, the United States Navy, and developers and tourists. The seventeen narratives in Voices from St. Simons represent an oral archaeological dig, writes editor Stephen Doster. Many of those interviewed are descendants of masters and slaves. Surprisingly, they speak of racial issues with greater compassion than bitterness. But the volume encompasses much more than that. Here, the people of the Golden Isles recall waving farewell to Paul Redfern when his airplane took off from a sandy beach on his ill-fated attempt to outdo Charles Lindbergh. They describe jumping into a fast boat and riding to the rescue of merchant sailors torpedoed by a German U-boat. They tell of playing childhood sportsand dominating the competitionalongside future NFL legend Jim Brown, who was raised on St. Simons. They remember piloting the ship that, due to a helmsmans error, hit the Sidney Lanier Bridge, causing one of the worst such disasters in American history. In some respects, the narratives reveal a plot of ground that time forgot, Doster writes. They present the reflections of a cross-section of ordinary people who lived during extraordinary times. Stephen Doster was born in 1959 in Kingston-Upon-Thames, England, and moved with his parents and four siblings to St. Simons Island, Georgia, in the early 1960s. His ties to the island date to the early 1900s, when his fathers family vacationed there before the construction of a mainland causeway. His grandparents permanently moved to St. Simons in the 1940s, building on the grounds where a Spanish mission once stood. Growing up on the island, Doster remembers the place as a Mayberry with tides, where he and neighborhood kids played baseball on the beach, sneaked into a resort hotel pool after football practices, and explored the islands woods and tidal creeks. His early recollections include seeing navy hurricane hunters fly over the Atlantic in search of storms before the days of satellites, viewing open Indian graves during an archaeological dig, evacuating the island at Hurricane Doras approach, and returning to the destruction left in its wake. After graduating from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1983, Doster headed to Nashville, Tennessee where he has lived and worked since. Though he has been a resident of Nashville for over 20 years, St. Simons has always been close to his heart. In 2002, John F. Blair published his debut novel, Lord Baltimore, about a young mans journey on the Georgia coast between Savannah and St. Simons. Voices from St. Simons is essentially Dosters effort to preserve the legacy of the area. For decades, he heard local residents utter the famous sentiment that someone should have recorded so-and-sos recollections before she died. Reading the obituary of a former elementary school teacher inspired him to set up face-to-face and telephone interviews that began his oral archaeological dig. Doster works at Vanderbilt University and lives in Nashville with his wife, Anne.

– Historical Novels Society
