"Miracles of Rare Device" deals with the problems of creative anxiety as a major theme in Romantic and Victorian poetry. A study of the structure and imagery of major poems of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, it combines textual and suggestive evidence to support the premise that a major key to nineteenth century English poetry is an understanding of the poets concern with himself as artist and with his art. The study affirms the self-conscious "poem of the act of the mind" as an important phase in our poetic tradition. Chosen for close discussion Blake, "The Tyger"; Wordsworth, "Tintern Abbey"; Coleridge, "Frost at Midnight"; Tennyson, "Locksley Hall" and "Merlin and Vivien"; Arnold, "Empedocles on Etna"; and Browning, "Andrea del Sarto," "Pictor Ignotus," "Dis Aliter Visum," and "Saul." Each offers evidence that between 1790 and 1864, among major poets, there was a gradually intensifying loss of faith in the power of poetry and creativity. In eleven graceful chapters, "Miracles of Rare Device" takes up a theme of major importance in our poetic tradition. The only full-length study to consider this theme in both Romantic and Victorian poetry, it demonstrates the dramatic continuity of the poets concern for his image of himself as poet, and reveals how the structure and imagery of both Romantics and Victorians embody their deepest anxieties about their capabilities as artists. It has implications also for the continuance of the tradition in poetry of the twentieth century.

Imagining the end of life in post-Enlightenment poetry : voices against the void David James Gordon Gainesville, University Press of Florida, Gainesville, Florida, 2005

David Gordon studies the changing conception of one's own death by examining the work of some of the most important poets of the last two centuries. The turn from Enlightenment to Romanticism introduced a new conception of individual death that we would now call existential. As the power of religion waned and with it the consoling belief in an afterlife, writers--especially poets--began to think of death as nothingness, as void. Gordon identifies and analyzes in depth three major modes of literary response to this shifting sensibility that developed in successive waves during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries: opposing the void in bold confrontation, modifying the void by recasting some element of Christian tradition, and ultimately turning away from the afterlife as no longer meaningful to focus instead--with a subtler kind of consolation--on the difficult-to-imagine cessation of consciousness.   Marginalizing writers with decided stances such as Swinburne and at the opposite extreme Hopkins, Gordon highlights writers in whom the interaction of religious and secular pressures is most apparent. Drawing upon Wittgenstein, Freud, and Burke for his theoretical orientation, Gordon provides close readings of a score of poets from Wordsworth, Byron, Tennyson, and Dickinson through Yeats, Lawrence, and Stevens to Bishop, Larkin, and Graham. In the process he distinguishes between the familiar form of elegy and his own subject, a more circumscribed, self-reflective poem, and creates telling comparisons and connections across several centuries and cultures.   Comprehensive in scope and acute in its readings, Gordon's study will appeal to critics ofnineteenth- and twentieth-century poetry as well as to intellectual historians.

In the early 1890s, twelve poets and their guests met regularly at Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, a tavern off Fleet Street, as well as other rendezvous in order to discuss their work, offer mutual support, and share their poetry aloud. Included are generous selections from the work of all major poets, and a representation of the work of virtually every poet of significance, from Thomas Ashe at the beginning of the era to Charlotte Mew at its end. The work of Victorian women poets features very prominently, with extensive selections not only from canonical poets such as Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Christina Rossetti, but also from poets such as Augusta Webster for which high claims have recently been made by critics. The anthology reflects (and will contribute to) the ongoing reassessment of the canon that is central to English Studies today; in all, sixty-six poets are represented. The editors have included complete works wherever feasible — including the complete texts of Tennyson’s In Memoriam and of a number of other long poems. A headnote by the editors introduces the work of each poet, and each selection has been newly annotated. The inclusion of twenty-five selections of the poetic theory from the period is an important feature rounding out the anthology. This anthology is also available in a concise edition.
