Placing Iran's 'tribal problem' in its historical context, Tribal Politics in Iran provides an overall assessment on the impact of this crucial period on the character of tribe-state relations in Iran to the end of Pahlavi rule and in the Islamic Republic. It analyzes the political and socio-economic factors undermining tribal politics under the regime of Reza Shah, and examines the division which took place regarding the 'tribal problem'. The author argues that on the one hand, it lead to modern ethnic nationalism and on the other, detribalization and absorption into wider class or ideology-based organizations happened. Looking particularly at the land reform of the early 1960s, and the revolution of 1979, Cronin also discusses the final disappearance of the khans as a political force and the rise of a new tribal leadership loyal to and dependent upon the regime. This text presents an introduction to the application of the finite ele ment method to the analysis of heat transfer problems. The discussion has been limited to diffusion and convection type of heat transfer in solids and fluids. The main motivation of writing this book stems from two facts. Firstly, we have not come across any other text which provides an intro duction to the finite element method (FEM) solely from a heat transfer perspective. Most introductory texts attempt to teach FEM from a struc tural engineering background, which may distract non-structural engineers from pursuing this important subject with full enthusiasm. We feel that our approach provides a better alternative for non-structural engineers. Secondly, for people who are interested in using FEM for heat transfer, we have attempted to cover a wide range of topics, presenting the essential the ory and full implementational details including two FORTRAN programs. In addition to the basic FEM heat transfer concepts and implementation, we have also presented some modem techniques which are being used to enhance the accuracy and speed of the conventional method. In writing the text we have endeavoured to keep it accessible to persons with qualifications of no more than an engineering graduate. As mentioned earlier this book may be used to learn FEM by beginners, this may include undergraduate students and practicing engineers. However, there is enough advanced material to interest more experienced practitioners.

The subject of this book is probabilistic number theory. In a wide sense probabilistic number theory is part of the analytic number theory, where the methods and ideas of probability theory are used to study the distribution of values of arithmetic objects. This is usually complicated, as it is difficult to say anything about their concrete values. This is why the following problem is usually investigated: given some set, how often do values of an arithmetic object get into this set? It turns out that this frequency follows strict mathematical laws. Here we discover an analogy with quantum mechanics where it is impossible to describe the chaotic behaviour of one particle, but that large numbers of particles obey statistical laws. The objects of investigation of this book are Dirichlet series, and, as the title shows, the main attention is devoted to the Riemann zeta-function. In studying the distribution of values of Dirichlet series the weak convergence of probability measures on different spaces (one of the principle asymptotic probability theory methods) is used. The application of this method was launched by H. Bohr in the third decade of this century and it was implemented in his works together with B. Jessen. Further development of this idea was made in the papers of B. Jessen and A. Wintner, V. Borchsenius and B. Erscheinungsdatum: 09.12.2010

Nuclear physics applications in medicine and energy are well known and widely reported. The Nuclear Physics Division of the EPS represents scientists from all branches of nuclear physics across Europe. The work of Ludwig Boltzmann (1844-1906) consists of two kinds of writings: in the first part of his active life he devoted himself entirely to problems of physics, while in the second part he tried to find a philosoph 1 ical background for his activities in and around the natural sciences. Most scientists are much more aware of his creative work in physics than of his digressions on the meaning and structure of science. I think in the present case the reason is not so much that most scientists are usually almost entirely occupied with their trade, because Boltzmann's philosophical work is also concerned with the (natural) sciences. I rather believe that the quality and consistency of Boltzmann's purely scientific work is of a more appealing nature than his less structured considerations on human activity in science and in life in general. 2. I think that it may be appropriate for the readers of this anthology to say a few words on the main findings of Boltzmann in physics, since in the end their 'philosophical' inlpact has been larger than the effect of his later writings. Moreover some knowledge of his scientific achievements can be helpful for the understanding and appreciation of the essays printed in this book, which almost all stem from Boltzmann's philosophical period. Boltzmann was one of the main protagonists - at least in continental Europe - of atomistics for explaining the phenomena of physics.
