英语搭配大辞典 = The Kenkyusha dictionary of English collocations Shichuan Fanzhilang zhu bian ; [Qin Hongwu ... Beijing Shi, Di 1 ban, Beijing Shi, 2006

Beijing: Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, 2005. — 1937 p. — ISBN 7-5600-5066-2. This dictionary is a collection of collocation phrases that indicates the conventional ties between words in English. It's a new dictionary that was developed further from "New Dictionary of English Collocations" published in 1958. The number of the examples included was increased from 200,000 to 380,000. Below is an example of an entry from this dictionary with some adverbial and prepositional collocations. **discreet** adj. Your remark was **hardly** discreet. / He is **invariably** discreet in his behavior. / He is **rarely** discreet in choosing his friends. / His behavior at the meeting was **thoughtfully** discreet. / You cannot be **too** discreet in choosing your marriage partner. / They were **tremendously** discreet in their reply to our offer. I tried to be discreet **about** the matter. | You should be more discreet **in** expressing yourself in public. / It was discreet **of** you to forward your opinions through him. | It might be discreet **of** you to bend a little to the prevailing wind.

The Civil War: A Narrative: Volume 3: Red River to Appomattox (Vintage Civil War Library) by Shelby Foote Vintage Books, Penguin Random House LLC, New York, 1986
Review"Here, for a certainty, is one of the great historical narratives of our century, a unique and brilliant achievement, one that must be firmly placed in the ranks of the masters... a stirring and stupendous synthesis of history." -- Van Allen Bradley, Chicago Daily News "A grand, sweeping narrative... will continue to be read and remembered as a classic of its kind." -- Richard N. Current, N.Y. Herald Tribune The Civil War: A Narrative Fredericksburg to Meridian "This, then, is narrative history -- a kind of history that goes back to an older literary tradition... The writing is superb ... one of the historical and literary achievements of our time." -- T. Harry Williams, Book World "The lucidity of the battle narratives, the vigor of the prose, the strong feeling for the men from generals to privates who did the fighting, are all controlled by a constant sense of how it happened and what it was all about. Foote has the novelist's feeling for character and situation, without losing the historian's scrupulous regard for recorded fact. The Civil War is likely to stand unequalled." -- Walter Millis --_Review_ "Here, for a certainty, is one of the great historical narratives of our century, a unique and brilliant achievement, one that must be firmly placed in the ranks of the masters... a stirring and stupendous synthesis of history." -- Van Allen Bradley, Chicago Daily News "A grand, sweeping narrative... will continue to be read and remembered as a classic of its kind." -- Richard N. Foote stays with the human strife and suffering, and unlike most Southern commentators, he does not take sides. In objectivity, in range, in mastery of detail in beauty of language and feeling for the people involved, this work surpasses anything else on the subject.... It stands alongside the work of the best of them."--_New Republic_

The New Economics Of India's Green Revolution: Income And Employment Diffusion In Rural Uttar Pradesh (food Systems And Agrarian Change) Rita Sharma, Thomas T. Poleman Ithaca, N.Y.: Cornell University Press, Food systems and agrarian change, Ithaca, N.Y, New York State, 1993
This book is a reappraisal of the effects of the Green Revolution in India's most important agricultural region. Through an examination of the changes that have occurred in Uttar Pradesh, Rita Sharma and Thomas T. Poleman show that the impact of technological change has varied over time, initially benefitting only resource-rich farmers but later bringing new opportunities to those less favorably endowed. The authors draw heartening conclusions. They maintain that the Green Revolution not only holds the potential for increasing food production at rates ahead of population growth; it also bids fair to help resolve India's far more perplexing employment problem.

Urban Europe, 1100-1700 Nicholas, David, 1939- Bloomsbury Academic; Bloomsbury, Houndmills, Basingstoke, Hampshire, New York, England, 2003
Reflecting the vigour of both urban and medieval history, this timely textbook by a leading scholar of urban studies is a broadly interdisciplinary work that breaks new ground by emphasising the links between the late medieval and early modern cities. Urban Europe, 1100-1700 : - Examines the common social, governmental, economic and intellectual roles played by most pre-modern cities - Views cities as originating in local market relations, then expanding with the growing complexity of their functions into regional centres of culture, government and exchange - Adopts an organic, evolutionary and environmental approach, particularly in its application of geographical systems to early urbanisation - Makes extensive use of maps and original source material to illustrate aspects of the urban experience David Nicholas' study will appeal to students and scholars of history, geography and urban studies. Sociologists and political economists will also value its demonstration of the continuing relevance of the thought of Max Weber, while urban planners will find its analysis of the rationality of pre-modern cities highly useful.

The Civil War: A Narrative: Volume 1: Fort Sumter to Perryville (Vintage Civil War Library) by Shelby Foote Vintage Books, a division of Random House, Penguin Random House LLC, New York, 1986
Amazon.com ReviewIn 1954, Shelby Foote was a young novelist with a contract to write a short history of the Civil War. It soon became clear, however, that he had undertaken a long-term project. Twenty years later Foote finally completed his massive and essential trilogy on the War Between the States. His three books are prose masterpieces with lively characterizations and gripping action. Although Foote never sacrifices the truth of what happened to his penchant for artistry, his skills as a novelist serve him well. Reading all three of these books will take some time, but they are worth the investment--especially if you, like Foote, have a touch of sympathy for the South's lost cause.

The Civil War a Narrative: Fredericksburg to Meridian Foote, Shelby Random House, Incorporated, Civil war generals, 1, 1st Vintage books ed, New York, 1986
Amazon.com Review This beautifully written trilogy of books on the American Civil War is not only a piece of first-rate history, but also a marvelous work of literature. Shelby Foote brings a skilled novelist's narrative power to this great epic. Many know Foote for his prominent role as a commentator on Ken Burns's PBS series about the Civil War. These three books, however, are his legacy. His southern sympathies are apparent: the first volume opens by introducing Confederate President Jefferson Davis, rather than Abraham Lincoln. But they hardly get in the way of the great story Foote tells. This hefty three volume set should be on the bookshelf of any Civil War buff. --John Miller Product Description Foote's comprehensive history of the Civil War includes three compelling volumes: Fort Sumter to Perryville, Fredericksburg to Meridian, and Red River to Appomattox. Collected together in a handsome boxed set, this is the perfect gift for any Civil War buff. Fort Sumter to Perryville "Here, for a certainty, is one of the great historical narratives of our century, a unique and brilliant achievement, one that must be firmly placed in the ranks of the masters." —Van Allen Bradley, Chicago Daily News "Anyone who wants to relive the Civil War, as thousands of Americans apparently do, will go through this volume with pleasure.... Years from now, Foote's monumental narrative most likely will continue to be read and remembered as a classic of its kind." —_New York Herald Tribune Book Review _ Fredericksburg to Meridian "This, then, is narrative history—a kind of history that goes back to an older literary tradition.... The writing is superb...one of the historical and literary achievements of our time." —_The Washington Post Book World _ "Gettysburg...is described with such meticulous attention to action, terrain, time, and the characters of the various commanders that I understand, at last, what happened in that battle.... Mr. Foote has an acute sense of the relative importance of events and a novelist's skill in directing the reader's attention to the men and the episodes that will influence the course of the whole war, without omitting items which are of momentary interest. His organization of facts could hardly be bettered." —_Atlantic _ Red River to Appomattox "An unparalleled achievement, an American Iliad, a unique work uniting the scholarship of the historian and the high readability of the first-class novelist." —Walker Percy "I have never read a better, more vivid, more understandable account of the savage battling between Grant's and Lee's armies.... Foote stays with the human strife and suffering, and unlike most Southern commentators, he does not take sides. This final volume of Shelby Foote’s masterful narrative history of the Civil War brings to life the military endgame, the surrender at Appomattox, and the tragic dénouement of the war—the assassination of President Lincoln.   Features maps throughout.   "An unparalleled achievement, an American Iliad, a unique work uniting the scholarship of the historian and the high readability of the first-class novelist." —Walker Percy   “To read this chronicle is an awesome and moving experience. History and literature are rarely so thoroughly combined as here; one finishes this volume convinced that no one need undertake this particular enterprise again.” —Newsweek   “In objectivity, in range, in mastery of detail, in beauty of language and feeling for the people involved, this work surpasses anything else on the subject. . . . Written in the tradition of the great historian-artists—Gibbon, Prescott, Napier, Freeman—it stands alongside the work of the best of them.” —The New Republic   “The most written-about war in history has, with this completion of Shelby Foote’s trilogy, been given the epic treatment it deserves.” —Providence Journal

The Civil War: A Narrative : Volume 2: Fredericksburg to Meridian Foote, Shelby Vintage Books, a division of Random House, Penguin Random House LLC, New York, 1986
Focused on the pivotal year of 1863, the second volume of Shelby Foote's masterful narrative history brings to life the Battle of Gettysburg and Grant's Vicksburg campaign and covers some of the most dramatic and important moments in the Civil War. Includes maps throughout.'This, then, is narrative history—a kind of history that goes back to an older literary tradition.... The writing is superb...one of the historical and literary achievements of our time.'—The Washington Post Book World'Mr. Foote has an acute sense of the relative importance of events and a novelist's skill in directing the reader's attention to the men and the episodes that will influence the course of the whole war, without omitting items which are of momentary interest. His organization of facts could hardly be better.'—Atlantic'Though the events of this middle year of the Civil War have been recounted hundreds of times, they have rarely been re-created with such vigor and such picturesque detail.'—The New York Times Book Review'The lucidity of the battle narratives, the vigor of the prose, the strong feeling for the men from generals to privates who did the fighting, are all controlled by constant sense of how it happened and what it was all about. Foote has the novelist's feeling for character and situation, without losing the historian's scrupulous regard for recorded fact. The Civil War is likely to stand unequaled.'—Walter Mills

The Civil War: A Narrative: Volume 1: Fort Sumter to Perryville (Vintage Civil War Library) Foote, Shelby Vintage Books, a division of Random House, Penguin Random House LLC, New York, 1986
This first volume of Shelby Foote's classic narrative of the Civil War opens with Jefferson Davis’s farewell to the United Senate and ends on the bloody battlefields of Antietam and Perryville, as the full, horrible scope of America’s great war becomes clear. Exhaustively researched and masterfully written, Foote’s epic account of the Civil War unfolds like a classic novel.    Includes maps throughout.   "Here, for a certainty, is one of the great historical narratives…a unique and brilliant achievement, one that must be firmly placed in the ranks of the masters."—Van Allen Bradley, Chicago Daily News "A stunning book full of color, life, character and a new atmosphere of the Civil War, and at the same time a narrative of unflagging power. Eloquent proof that an historian should be a writer above all else." —Burke Davis "To read this great narrative is to love the nation—to love it through the living knowledge of its mortal division. Whitman, who ultimately knew and loved the bravery and frailty of the soldiers, observed that the real Civil War would never be written and perhaps should not be. For me, Shelby Foote has written it.... This work was done to last forever." —James M. Cox, Southern Review

The Civil War: A Narrative: Volume 3: Red River to Appomattox (Vintage Civil War Library) Foote, Shelby Vintage Books, Penguin Random House LLC, New York, 1986

Amazon.com Review In 1954, Shelby Foote was a young novelist with a contract to write a short history of the Civil War.
