Reflections on Native-Newcomer Relations : Selected Essays Miller, J.R. University of Toronto Press Scholarly Publishing Division, 2004 jan 31
__Reflections on Native-Newcomer Relations__ opens up for discussion a series of issues in Native-newcomer history. It addresses all the trends in the discipline of the past two decades and never shies from showing their contradictions, as well as those in the author's own thinking as he matured as a scholar.

Chapter Seven. Whither Autonomous Motherhood? Choice And Constraint Autonomous Motherhood?, 2015
I would have loved to have a much more normal life with a partner and a couple of kids, but that was not an option that ever came for me. 1 This book has explored the conditions under which women undertake and execute a decision to parent without a partner and without the genetic father. In our introductory chapter, we posed several questions, including whether this choice is now just one of various lifestyle options; whether a woman's choice is supported by the state and society; whether children are served well by this choice; the extent to which any single mothering can be truly "autonomous"; and, finally, whether single mothers by choice are, per se, transgressive. We also complicated the concept of "choice" by identifying the numerous factors that can constrain and shape women's choices, including familial and heterosexual ideologies, as well as economic difficulties. In addition, we explored the concept of relational autonomy in order to distance our analysis from a liberal individualist concept of autonomy and to highlight the extent to which all individuals are almost inevitably reliant on relationships. These relationships may be with family members, with other individuals such as friends, with state officials, or with social networks. They can be positive or negative in their impact on the individuals involved. While our book has focused on motherhood, it is clear that the ability of children to thrive and develop is especially dependent on positive relationships with the adults in their lives and the quality of support in

3. Heidegger and the Conservative Revolution University of Toronto Press, Heidegger and the Question of National, 2007
Heidegger's 'Rector's Address' has drawn perhaps inordinate attention in recent years, particularly as evidence of Heidegger's 'involvement' in National Socialism -which it undoubtedly offers. The interpretations of Ott, Rockmore, Philipse, Köchler, and Fritsche, among others, are typical in the sense that they implicate Heidegger in the totalitarian designs of National Socialism, even if they allow that Heidegger's version of Nazism was not necessarily racist, and that it was, in fact, unorthodox in its entire tendency. 1 Yet the philosophical grounds of Heidegger's invocation of the fundamental interrelation of Volk, work service, and science in the Address remain insufficiently clarified by these interpretations. In what follows, I propose to show that Heidegger's deconstruction and retrieval of Aristotle, in particular, prepare the way for his understanding of Volk in its relation to the historicity of science, and that, consequently, the Address reflects some of the central theses of Heidegger's thought, and is not merely an opportunistic response to the political situation of 1933.

"Widely acknowledged as a major turning point in the history of visual depictions of war, Francisco de Goya's renowned print series The Disasters of War remains a touchstone for serious engagement with the violence of war and the questions raised by its artistic representation. The Art of Witnessing provides a new account of Goya's print series by taking readers through the forty-seven prints he dedicated to the violence of war. Drawing on facets of Goya's artistry rarely considered together before, the book challenges the notion that documentary realism and historical testimony were his primary aims. Michael Iarocci argues that while the depiction of war's atrocities was central to Goya's project, the lasting power of the print series stems from the artist's complex moral and aesthetic meditations on the subject. Making novel contributions to longstanding debates about historical memory, testimony, and the representation of violence, The Art of Witnessing tells a new story, print by print, to highlight the ways in which Goya's masterpiece extends far beyond conventional understandings of visual testimony."-- Provided by publisher

Frontmatter University of Toronto Press, After Suburbia, 2022
Suburbia presents a cross-section of state-of-the-art scholarship in critical global suburban research and provides an in-depth study of the planet's urban peripheries to grasp the forms of urbanization in the twenty-first century.Based on cutting-edge conceptual thought and steeped in richly detailed empirical work conducted over the past decade, After Suburbia draws on research from Asia, Africa, Australia, Europe, and the Americas to showcase comprehensive global scholarship on the urban periphery. Contributors explicitly reject the traditional centre-periphery dichotomy and the prioritization of epistemologies that favour the Global North, especially North American cases, over other experiences. In doing so, the book strongly advances the notion of a post-suburban reality in which traditional dynamics of urban extension outward from the centre are replaced by a set of complex contradictory developments. After Suburbia examines multiple centralities and diverse peripheries which mesh to produce a surprisingly contradictory and diverse metropolitan landscape.

The concept of a UCC was first introduced into the national political debate by leaders of the women's movement in 1940. 28 The All India Women's Conference (AIWC) was a national women's organization founded in 1927; it soon became one of the most prominent women's groups. It was primarily concerned with lobbying government on issues of women's education, suffrage, employment, and personal law reform. See the discussion in chapter 2, above. There were only fifteen women members of the Constituent Assembly. There were no Muslim women represented in the Constituent Assembly.

Chapter One Gordon Murray University of Toronto Press, The Heartbeat of Innovation, 2022
Motto: "It ticketh and ticketh forever, until it ticketh no more." Murray Becomes a Surgeon Many of the great figures at the University of Toronto grew up on farms in small-town Ontario, and Murray was no exception. He was born in 1894 in a farmhouse near Paris, Ontario, and went to high school in Stratford. Gordon's father, John Murray, a Scotsman, arrived in Canada in 1873. Of Gordon Murray's home environment, Bigelow said, "His mother was probably the profound influence in Gordon Murray's life. She must have been a remarkable woman, with unusual imagination and knowledge and a never-ceasing interest in nature. She always had time to demonstrate its wonders first-hand to her children." 1 She was also a resourceful woman. When two-year-old Gordon fell and lacerated his scalp, "In spite of swooning remonstrances from onlookers, she produced the sewing basket, selected a fine stout needle with a good-sized eye, put in a number 20 cotton thread, and placed both in a pan of boiling water." Holding the screaming young Gordon between her knees, "she proceeded to repair the damaged epidermis ... with a neat running mattress suture." 2 The family doctor, who inspected things the next day, gave her a thumbs up -and for the rest of his life Gordon rather proudly bore the scar. And the curiosity about the wonders stuck. As Murray was growing up on the farm, he had a neighbour whose horse kept falling over, always on the same side. As neurosurgeon Bill Keith (who knew Murray when Keith was an intern and Murray a resident) tells the story, "One day Gord heard that the horse was dead and had been buried. He went and dug up the head and examined the brain and found that there

Medieval authors adopted prophetic roles within their works because the prophet is an authoritative but intermediary figure. Although the prophetic subject position allowed authors to imply their own importance, it also allowed them to acknowledge external sources of inspiration. I suspect that most medieval authors would appreciate the sentiment of the contemporary, formal "Acknowledgments" section, even if its execution is considerably less artful than their own methods of acknowledging others. I myself appreciate the opportunity to thank the people who helped me write this book.I would like to acknowledge Blair and Barbara Labatt's generous financial support of the five-year Labatt Scholar fund, which allowed me to conduct manuscript research and attend conferences to develop the ideas in this book. I also appreciate the support of the Cecelia Jacobs Endowment in British Literature, which helped to fund this book's publication. I am grateful to Robert W. Barrett, Lynn Staley, Karen Fresco, and Martin Camargo for their useful feedback on this project at its earliest stages. True to character, Charles D. Wright also selflessly offered his prompt and thorough input on my drafts of chapter 1. Robert Adams magnanimously read drafts of chapter 2 and shared valuable insights on William Langland's historical contexts. I am also indebted to Andrew Rabin for helping me polish various portions of the first two chapters and to R.F. Yeager for sharing his input on the Vox clamantis portions of chapter 3. I have been blessed with a generous mentor in Dominique Battles, who provided advice on chapter 4 and moral support throughout the process of writing this book.Eric Weiskott serendipitously organized a conference session about medieval prophecy at the International Congress on Medieval Studies at just the right moment for me to share and revise some of the ideas in this book, and he has since invited me to multiple conference sessions

Conclusion: Chekhov’s Ghosts University of Toronto Press, Writing Fear, 2022
Ghosts, as we all know, are a superstition, the product of undeveloped intelligence, but Vaksin, nonetheless, pulled the blanket over his head and closed his eyes more tightly.Anton Chekhov, "Nerves" Anton Chekhov is not known for ghost stories. His one noted foray into the genre is "The Black Monk" ("Chernyi monakh," 1894), a story about a scholar, Andrei Kovrin, who is visited by a ghostly monk who convinces him he is a genius and destined for greatness. "The Black Monk" contains a plethora of canonical gothic tropes. Kovrin returns to the estate of his former guardian and teacher, Pesotsky, which is described as "gloomy and severe" (угрюмый и строгий). 1 The estate's gothic qualities are highlighted as the description continues, denoting the unsociable gleam of the pond. Introducing a hint of incest to the story, Kovrin is encouraged to and eventually decides to marry Pesotsky's daughter, Tanya, who had been like a sister to him in childhood. The most gothic element of the story is the ghost, a long-dead (or possibly never living) monk who visits the hero multiple times. The first scenes take place in a mysterious orchard at night (with curling tendrils of smoke from fires to dispel frost around the trees), and the appearance of the black monk further reinforces the suggestive atmosphere:A monk in black robes, with gray hair and black brows, arms crossed over his breast, swept past ... His bare feet did not touch the ground. Having raced ahead three fathoms [about twenty feet], he looked back at Kovrin, nodded his head, and smiled at him gently but at the same time slyly. But what a pale, frightfully pale, thin face! Starting to grow again, he flew Conclusion: Chekhov's Ghosts

Chapter Eighteen Perfusionists University of Toronto Press, The Heartbeat of Innovation, 2022
You can't do bypass surgery without a perfusionist. The story goes that a drummer with the Jimmy Dorsey Band was among the earliest perfusionists. Dick Weisel, cardiac surgeon at TGH, said that his father, an academic cardiac surgeon named Wilson Weisel in Milwaukee, used to play trumpet in the 1930s with some of the big bands of the era. He would come down from Milwaukee to Chicago to jam with them. "After they were finished on Saturday, he would bring the drummer up to Milwaukee, because the guy was good with his hands. He ran the pump, and he became a founding member of the American Academy of Perfusion. His name was Ace Adams." 1 Indeed, Ace Adams became the director in the early 1970s of the St. Luke's School of Perfusion in Milwaukee.Perfusion had an even earlier beginning in Toronto. At TGH on 10 January 1958, Bigelow, Key, and Heimbecker "performed the first successful open-heart surgery in Toronto when they closed an ASD on a twenty-five-year-old female utilizing the commercially available Travenol bubble oxygenator." 2 Daniel Stanford, a young technologistengineer, was the first perfusionist at the TGH. Bigelow disliked Stanford and dismissed him.Life in the early days of perfusion was not the simplest. Barrie Fairley, who was administering the anesthetic, recalled of one operation, "Bigelow was standing with the heart cannulated and the pump behind him primed and ready to go. When he told the technician to start, [the technician] delayed taking off the arterial line clamp and one of the latex hoses split and came apart. Blood was spraying at several litres a minute up and down Bigelow's back, then his front when he turned, shouting at the technician, 'Danny, what are you doing?' The technician coolly picked up an unsterile piece of tubing that was there by chance, stopped the pump, switched the tubing and restarted -all in a

Hypothermia meant you had eight to ten minutes -maximum -to operate while the heart was stilled, before body tissues began to die from lack of oxygen. Bigelow said, "To violate this time frame might cause permanent brain damage or death. To keep the surgeon well informed of time, our anaesthetist would call out the minutes. He usually affected a mounting crescendo in announcing minutes eight, nine, and ten to stir up the surgeon. It was a rare outlet for the thespian that lurks in all anaesthetists and surgeons in the operating 'theatre.' There was no shortage of suspense and drama." 1 Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Bulges in the abdominal portion of the aorta were not infrequent and were often fatal: "50% die of rupture 6 months after they are first diagnosed," was the wisdom. "Many of these are symptomless and diagnosed on routine examination." 2 They had always been the bane of surgery. But how about patching into the aneurysm a vein that has been reversed? As early as 1950 Don Wilson and Bill Bigelow were adopting Murray's technique of reversing the saphenous vein in operation, this time on the big artery in the pit of the knee (the popliteal artery). Yet aneurysms in the abdominal portion of the aorta were more challenging because they could instantly rupture, bleeding the patient out in minutes. And there had been no good means of repairing them. Instead, the bulging portion was simply removed.

Preface University of Toronto Press, German Social Democracy through British Eyes, 2022
Written during the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020, this book is about a political movement, Social Democracy, that many Germans in the nineteenth century regarded as a scourge on society. That "scourge" emerged from a tiny germ after mid-century, it mutated repeatedly in the face of efforts to combat it, and it changed prevailing assumptions about how class relations, democratic institutions, and global solidarities thrive or break down. Before the First World War, as a response to persecution and other forms of exclusion, Social Democrats in Germany practised self-isolation -not by choice but of necessity. They created for themselves a vast network of working-class cultural associations where they could escape the condescension or hostility of the middle and upper classes. There were integrative tendencies too: workers who supported the Social Democratic Party (SPD) 1 were proud of Germany's place in the world and they were ready to defend it if attacked. They also sought social respectability, often adopting bourgeois manners and dress codes. Yet they were kept apart, at a distance, by more privileged and powerful segments of society, who thought that socialists, like the Jews, still had to demonstrate good intentions and assimilate more successfully before they were welcomed as fully equal partners in society and political life. In the meantime, isolation and containment remained the order of the day. Freeing up society too soon, opening the door to "the reds," foretold consequences too dark to imagine. After the fighting stopped in 1918, bourgeois Europeans recalibrated their retrospective lenses, but still they could not easily fit Social Democracy into the image of a pre-war belle époque.

Chapter Three. Egalitarianism and Status Hierarchy University of Toronto Press, Cooperation and Social Justice, 2022
It is standard practice in sociological research on class and inequality to refer to members of what are conventionally known as the "lower classes" using the slightly euphemistic term "low-SES individuals." SES is an acronym that stands for "socioeconomic status," and it is used in recognition of the fact that social stratification is based upon much more than just economic standing (i.e., income or wealth). The "socio-" prefix is a catchall, which is usually operationalized by specifying education level and occupational status. These are meant to approximate something more ephemeral, or at least difficult to measure, which is the amount of "social status" that an individual possesses. 1 We all understand this notion of status implicitly, on the basis of our own lives and social relationships, but it is very difficult to articulate explicitly. Status is, in our society, an informally maintained system of ranking, or of dominance, based on an invidious comparison between individuals. There is no single basis for this ordering, although there are strong correlations between individual positions in the rankings, because high standing in one dimension can often be parlayed into improvements in some other. 2 (To take just one example, physical attractiveness is an important source of status, both directly, through the psychological effects it has on others, but also indirectly, because it can be used to obtain greater wealth, influence, and opportunity. And so if one compares the difference in average level of physical attractiveness between, say, the members of an expensive tennis club and the customers at a Walmart store, the contrast is dramatic. 4 ) Social status is also closely tied to self-esteem, because the categories under which individuals evaluate their own qualities are typically contrastive, such that thinking one is "good" in some way usually amounts to thinking that one is "better than" certain other people.

A Name for Herself Selected Writings, 1891 1917 L. M. Montgomery; Benjamin Lefebvre University of Toronto Press, University of Toronto Press, Toronto, 2018
<P>Years before she published her internationally celebrated first novel, <I>Anne of Green Gables</I>, L.M. Montgomery (1874–1942) started contributing short works to periodicals across North America. While these works consisted primarily of poems and short stories, she also experimented with a wider range of forms, particularly during the early years of her career, at which point she tested out several authorial identities before settling on the professional moniker "L.M. Montgomery."</P> <P><EM>A Name for Herself: Selected Writings, 1891–1917</EM> is the first in a series of volumes collecting Montgomery’s extensive contributions to periodicals. Leading Montgomery scholar Benjamin Lefebvre discusses these so-called miscellaneous pieces in relation to the works of English-speaking women writers who preceded her and the strategies they used to succeed, including the decision to publish under gender-neutral signatures. Among the highlights of the volume are Montgomery’s contributions to student periodicals, a weekly newspaper column entitled "Around the Table," a long-lost story narrated first by a woman trapped in an unhappy marriage and then by the man she wishes she had married instead, and a new edition of her 1917 celebrity memoir, "The Alpine Path." Drawing fascinating links to Montgomery’s life writing, career, and fiction, this volume will offer scholars and readers alike an intriguing new look at the work of Canada’s most enduringly popular author.</P>

Nagorno-Karabakh and the Lachin Corridor Crisis 15(1) Alexander Alvarez, Adam Muller, Jennifer E. Rich, Henry Theriault Bedross Der Matossian Armen T. Marsoobian Karena Avedissian Geoffrey Robertson Ani Garabed Ohanian Lindsey Snell Genocide Studies International, Genocide Studies International, 15(1), 15(1), 2023
In the first issue of Genocide Studies International, founding editor Herb Hirsch pre- sented a sharp critique of the field of Genocide Studies and urged scholars to take a more compassionate, active, and practical approach in our work. He wrote: ...we might conclude that one thing should take prominence above all else— something reflected in the Hippocratic Oath: do no harm. ... there is a minimal policy that should be adopted on the way to more important and inclusive ones: we should help those who are hungry and sick and try to stop the violence.1 This special issue, dedicated to the Azerbaijani blockade of the Lachin Corridor, takes up Hirsch’s plea by highlighting the gross violations of the human rights of Armenians of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic2 (NKR), casting a critical eye on the current responses (or lack thereof) from the international community and offering practical steps toward the worthy goal of doing no harm. The independent area of the NKR, home to 120,000 Armenians, is surrounded by the territory of Azerbaijan. There is only one route that connects the Armenian Republic with the NKR—that connects families and friends, that carries everything from basic supplies to lifesaving medications—the Lachin Corridor. For over six months (at the time of this writing), the government of Azerbaijan and its proxies have blockaded the Lachin Corridor, effectively strangling the Armenian community in the NKR. This has resulted in preventable deaths due to dramatic shortages of food, medicine, and energy, and denial of medical care. The situation unfolding in the NKR is outlined in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) order issued in response to Armenia’s case against Azerbaijan for imposition of the blockade and other human rights violations.3 The ICJ order issued in February 2023 is a positive step forward, though a more careful reading suggests that it does not go far enough. It includes a legally binding requirement that Azerbaijan actively work to ensure free movement in both directions along the Lachin Corridor, refuting the false assertions made by the Azerbaijani government that there is, already, freedom of movement throughout this vital passage. In this way, the order seemingly upholds the right of free movement out of—and back into—one’s country, implying that the NKR functions as an independent state vis-à-vis Azerbaijan. While it is likely that few international legal experts would see this as de facto recognition of the independence of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, the application of law in this way seems to derive from the fact that Nagorno-Karabakh, given the facts presented to the ICJ, does in fact function as an independent state, particularly vis-à-vis Azerbaijan. However, while the ICJ decision might seem to be a significant victory for human rights, we contend that this view ought to be tempered by the fact that the blockade of the Lachin Corridor continues. Moreover, the ICJ’s order comprises provisional measures rather than a final decision—despite the abundance of evidence that supports a final determination in favor of Armenia. On the whole, the order gives the impression that the ICJ has intervened to support human rights while, practically speaking, it is a political dodge that allows the court to postpone or avoid decisive action. Of course, more important than an interpretation of the contents of the ICJ order is an analysis of its effectiveness. Despite the legally binding nature of the order, Azerbaijan has not only continued to maintain the blockade, but has increased its severity by setting up a military checkpoint and engaging in military aggression against Armenians in both the NKR and the Republic of Armenia. We see Azerbaijan’s flagrant disregard of the ICJ order as a direct effect of regional and global indifference. Even when members of the international community have spoken out against the blockade, their words have not been accompanied by meaningful action. Fur- thermore, most—if not all—of the world’s governing bodies have maintained a relativist approach to the situation, ignoring the growing asymmetry of power and obscuring the reality that Azerbaijan is the unprovoked aggressor. Even when the situation has been seen as a conflict rather than as a one-sided human rights catastrophe, though, there has been no meaningful intervention. Ultimately, there is not a single international player helping NKR Armenians survive. The question, then, must be: Why is there such profound global indifference? Part of the answer is that contemporary Armenians, especially in the NKR, are plagued by denial of the 1915 Armenian Genocide and the constant effort it takes to overcome this denial.4 Fun- damentally, many non-Armenians seem to feel that they have already done enough. They have already argued on behalf of Armenia against genocide denial and are not interested in supporting Armenians against even more mass human rights violations and violence against them. This is partly because it is “easier” to recognize the unambiguousness of genocide, especially when it occurred a century ago, than it is to take a stand against the mass oppression and violence that is currently unfolding and, once again, trending toward genocide. Another part of the answer lies in the real effects of genocide on targeted groups. The 1915 genocide reduced the global Armenian population by half, and created conditions that complicated rebuilding the Armenian community: families were fractured, women of child-bearing age were abducted, education was cut short, and Armenians were forced or coerced to eschew their cultural identity. There is an argument to be made that had Armenia been supported in the wake of the genocide, it would now function as a re- gional power and, as such, experience relative safety from the malevolence of Azerbaijan.5 Instead, Armenia suffers from profound geopolitical weakness and an uncomfortable dependence on Russia for protection. And so, whether one sees the actions of Azerbaijan today as extensions of, or distinct from, the 1915 genocide, the contemporary impact of the genocidal past is perhaps the most significant factor rendering Armenians here and now vulnerable to the destruction of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic and, quite possibly, Armenia itself. It is easy—comfortable, acceptable, even—for the world to overlook contemporary violence perpetrated against Armenians because of the violence perpetrated against them in the past. It is as if we collectively decided to accept the death and dispersion of Armenians; at the very least, we have normalized it. There is no mass outcry from the political superpowers, no pressure put on the government of Azerbaijan to cease the stranglehold they have on the NKR. The blockade of the Lachin Corridor barely, if at all, registers in the consciousness of the global populace. We cannot help but think that, had Armenians not been subjected to genocide in the past, the world community would find their current plight far more urgent. The articles within this special issue of Genocide Studies International are written by a diversity of scholars, journalists, and activists who approach the crisis of the Lachin Corridor blockade from unique perspectives. All of these contributions lean into the opportunity for the global community to do the right things for the right reasons. They adhere to the “minimal policy” that Herb Hirsch argued for a decade ago, namely the view that “we should help those who are hungry and sick and try to stop the violence.”

1 Martin Heidegger’s Thinking and Japanese Philosophy Kōichi Tsujimura; Martin Heidegger University of Toronto Press, Heidegger’s Being, 2022
Most honored Professor Heidegger! Most honored Mrs. Heidegger! Honorable Mayor Schühle! Ladies and Gentlemen! It is a great honor not only for me alone but also for Japanese philosophy that I may deliver an address here today at the celebration of the 80th birthday of our great thinker. For this opportunity, I very sincerely thank those who have organized this celebration. The reason that this honorable task has been given to me, an unknown Japanese, is presumably that I, a Japanese student of Heidegger, am coming from afar, if I may say so. Yet in the background of this coming from afar lies quite a long path, along which up until now many Japanese have tried, indeed are trying more and more today, to come into the nearness of the place where the thinking of our master sojourns. For this reason, please allow me to recall briefly some important predecessors along this path.
