A History in Sum: 150 Years of Mathematics at Harvard (1825 - 1975) Steve Nadis and Shing-Tung Yau (Authors) Harvard University, Department of Sanskrit & Indian Studies, Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 2013
In the twentieth century, American mathematicians began to make critical advances in a field previously dominated by Europeans. Harvard's mathematics department was at the center of these developments. A History in Sum is an inviting account of the pioneers who trailblazed a distinctly American tradition of mathematics--in algebraic geometry and topology, complex analysis, number theory, and a host of esoteric subdisciplines that have rarely been written about outside of journal articles or advanced textbooks. The heady mathematical concepts that emerged, and the men and women who shaped them, are described here in lively, accessible prose. The story begins in 1825, when a precocious sixteen-year-old freshman, Benjamin Peirce, arrived at the College. He would become the first American to produce original mathematics--an ambition frowned upon in an era when professors largely limited themselves to teaching. Peirce's successors--William Fogg Osgood and Maxime Bôcher--undertook the task of transforming the math department into a world-class research center, attracting to the faculty such luminaries as George David Birkhoff. Birkhoff produced a dazzling body of work, while training a generation of innovators--students like Marston Morse and Hassler Whitney, who forged novel pathways in topology and other areas. Influential figures from around the world soon flocked to Harvard, some overcoming great challenges to pursue their elected calling. A History in Sum elucidates the contributions of these extraordinary minds and makes clear why the history of the Harvard mathematics department is an essential part of the history of mathematics in America and beyond. ** Review This book tells the tale of how mathematics developed at Harvard--and by extension in the United States--since early days. It is filled with fascinating stories about some of the legendary names of modern mathematics. Both fans of mathematics and readers curious about the history of Harvard will enjoy it. (Edward Witten, Professor of Physics, Institute for Advanced Study) A History in Sum is a beautiful tribute to a beautiful subject, one that illuminates mathematics through the lens of some of its most remarkable practitioners. The authors' love of mathematics shines through every chapter, as they use accessible and spirited language to describe a wealth of heady insights and the all-too-human stories of the minds that discovered them. There is perhaps no better book for immersion into the curious and compelling history of mathematical thought. (Brian Greene, Professor of Mathematics & Physics, Columbia University) The book is written in a leisurely style, the scope is remarkably broad, and the topics covered are explained astonishingly well. Once I started the book, I simply couldn't put it down and I was ecstatic to easily understand important mathematics far from my own research interests. (Joel Smoller, Professor of Mathematics, University of Michigan) A History in Sum contains a wealth of good stories, stories that go to the heart of the development of mathematics in this country. The authors succeed in humanizing and enlivening what might otherwise be a dry treatment of the subject. (Ron Irving, Professor of Mathematics, University of Washington) Nadis and Yau are very successful at bringing some of the major figures in American mathematics to life. A History in Sum is a genuine and valuable addition to the world of mathematical biography. (Paul Lockhart, author of Measurement ) A triumph! I know of no other book like A History in Sum . Nadis and Yau offer a delightfully lucid introduction to the dazzling and heroic ideas of twentieth-century mathematics--and the colorful personalities and stories behind them. (Steven Strogatz, author of The Joy of X: A Guided Tour of Math, from One to Infinity ) The development of American mathematics, and American education more generally, cannot be told without an account of Harvard University…Though a department history seems like a parochial exercise, Harvard’s mathematics department’s history is much bigger and well worth the read. (J. McCleary Choice 2014-05-01) [An] interesting history of mathematics at Harvard…The book starts from the mid-19th century, when mathematics came into being as an area of study at Harvard University. It reveals a myriad of personalities who have contributed to its prestige as a centre of mathematical research. It portrays life at Harvard from around 1825 to times of the great depression and the years following the 2nd World War. More importantly, it provides meaningful insight into all sorts of mathematical topics. (Peter Ruane Mathematical Association of America Reviews 2013-12-11) The remarkable result is an account, at a consistently clear, non-specialist level, of a wide swath of modern mathematics. (Albert C. Lewis Mathematical Reviews (starred review) 2014-06-01) [The authors] treat mathematics of ever-increasing theoretical difficulty with hands that manage deftly…to reveal the spirit, the excitement, and the dynamics of the mathematical endeavor at the cutting edge of research. (Karen Hunger Parshall Canadian Journal of History 2014-10-01) The story of the Harvard mathematics department’s growth into one of the world’s premier centers of mathematical research is of interest not only in its own right but as a microcosm of the development of the larger American mathematical community. A collaboration between a scientific journalist ( Nadis ) and an eminent Harvard mathematician ( Yau ) has now brought us a very readable account of this history. (Gerald B. Folland American Mathematical Monthly 2015-05-01) Yau and Nadis succeed admirably in making clear how Harvard has long served as a magnet, attracting some of the world’s best mathematicians and thus making it an exciting place to be, a melting pot of mathematical activity. (Joseph W. Dauben Isis 2015-06-01) About the Author Steve Nadis is a freelance science writer living in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Shing-Tung Yau, a Fields Medal winner, is William Caspar Graustein Professor of Mathematics and former chair of the Mathematics Department at Harvard University.

Rituelen Cees Nooteboom De Bezige Bij, 1980
The Good Soldier Ford Madox/ Guerrero, Marciano (INT) Ford CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform, Place of publication not identified, 2014
Using pre-First World War Europe as its stage, The Good Soldier is the unforgettable story of Edward Ashburnham, his wife Leonora, and their friends, John and Florence Dowell. The eponymous Good Soldier, Edward embodies upper-class English values but behind closed doors carries on a long-running affair with Florence. When Florence’s husband, John, discovers the affair, he sets in motion a series of events both tragic and unavoidable. Drawing on events from his own life, Ford Madox Ford’s The Good Soldier resonates with themes of love and betrayal that are as relevant in modern times as they were when the novel was published in 1915. The Good Soldier is ranked on Modern Library’s 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century, and has been adapted for television and radio. Gezond Met Zonlicht / Druk 1 Moritz, Andreas Ankh-Hermes B.V., Uitgeverij, 2010
E. Topophrenia: Place, Narrative, and the Spatial Imagination (The Spatial Humanities) Robert T. Tally, Jr. Indiana University Press, Open Road Integrated Media, Inc., Bloomington, Indiana, 2019
What is our place in the world, and how do we inhabit, understand, and represent this place to others? Topophrenia gathers essays by Robert Tally that explore the relationship between space, place, and mapping, on the one hand, and literary criticism, history, and theory on the other. The book provides an introduction to spatial literary studies, exploring in detail the theory and practice of geocriticism, literary cartography, and the spatial humanities more generally. The spatial anxiety of disorientation and the need to know one's location, even if only subconsciously, is a deeply felt and shared human experience. Building on Yi Fu Tuan's "topophilia" (or love of place), Tally instead considers the notion of "topophrenia" as a simultaneous sense of place-consciousness coupled with a feeling of disorder, anxiety, and "dis-ease." He argues that no effective geography could be complete without also incorporating an awareness of the lonely, loathsome, or frightening spaces that condition our understanding of that space. Tally considers the tension between the objective ordering of a space and the subjective ways in which narrative worlds are constructed. Narrative maps present a way of understanding that seems realistic but is completely figurative. So how can these maps be used to not only understand the real world but also to put up an alternative vision of what that world might otherwise be? From Tolkien to Cervantes, Borges to More, Topophrenia provides a clear and compelling explanation of how geocriticism, the spatial humanities, and literary cartography help us to narrate, represent, and understand our place in a constantly changing world. ** Review With Topophrenia Robert Tally discerns, first, how literature invents and produces space, and second, what the creative imagination does with space. These become the ground of a critical praxis addressing the conditions of the world in which we live. Blending close analysis with dialectics, Tally's book is a compelling study of the complex relations of literature and geography. (Tom Conley, author of An Errant Eye: Poetry and Topography in Early Modern France ) Tally writes tersely and elegantly of the Odyssey, The Divine Comedy, of Moby-Dick (notably ‘The Chart’ sequence), Ulysses, Tolkein’s ‘middle worlds,’ and, soon after, Thomas More and of the relation of utopia to fantasy and science fiction. If space belongs to the form and purpose of the novel, it also applies to Topophrenia in general. ... Ambitious in scope, the strength of Topophrenia is found in how it makes its case. (Peta Mitchell, author (with Jane Stadler and Stephen Carleton) of Imagined Landscapes: Geovisualizing Australian Spatial Narratives ) About the Author Robert T. Tally Jr. is Professor of English at Texas State University. His books include Fredric Jameson: The Project of Dialectical Criticism ; Utopia in the Age of Globalization : Space, Representation, and the World System ; and Spatiality .

upload/motw_shc_2025_10/shc/Combined and Uneven Development - Sharae Deckard.pdf
Combined and Uneven Development: Towards a New Theory of World-Literature (Postcolonialism Across the Disciplines LUP) Sharae Deckard; Nicholas Lawrence; Neil Lazarus; Graeme Macdonald; Upamanyu Pablo Mukherjee; Benita Parry; Stephen Shapiro Liverpool University Press, Liverpool University Press / Books, Liverpool, 2015
The ambition of this book is to resituate the problem of 'world literature', considered as a revived category of theoretical enquiry, by pursuing the literary-cultural implications of the theory of combined and uneven development. This theory has a long pedigree in the social sciences, where it continues to stimulate debate. But its implications for cultural analysis have received less attention, even though the theory might be said to draw attention to a central -perhaps the central - arc or trajectory of modern(ist) production in literature and the other arts worldwide. It is in the conjuncture of combined and uneven development, on the one hand, and the recently interrogated and expanded categories of 'world literature' and 'modernism', on the other, that this book looks for its specific contours. In the two theoretical chapters that frame the book, the authors argue for a single, but radically uneven world-system; a singular modernity, combined and uneven; and a literature that variously registers this combined unevenness in both its form and content to reveal itself as, properly speaking, world-literature. In the four substantive chapters that then follow, the authors explore a selection of modern-era fictions in which the potential of their method of comparativism seems to be most dramatically highlighted. They treat the novel paradigmatically, not exemplarily, as a literary form in which combined and uneven development is manifested with particular salience, due in no small part to its fundamental association with the rise of capitalism and its status in peripheral and semi-peripheral societies as a 'modernising' import. The peculiar plasticity and hybridity of the novel form enables it to incorporate not only multiple literary levels, genres and modes, but also other non-literary and archaic cultural forms - so that, for example, realist elements might be mixed with more experimental modes of narration, or older literary devices might be reactivated in juxtaposition with more contemporary frames.

The Medium Is the Monster : Canadian Adaptations of Frankenstein and the Discourse of Technology Mark A. McCutcheon Athabasca University Press, Athabasca University Press, Edmonton, Alberta, 2018
"Technology, a word that emerged historically first to denote the study of any art or technique, has come, in modernity, to describe advanced machines, industrial systems, and media. McCutcheon argues that it is Mary Shelley's 1818 novel Frankenstein that effectively reinvented the meaning of the word for modern English. It was then Marshall McLuhan's media theory and its adaptations in Canadian popular culture that popularized, even globalized, a Frankensteinian sense of technology. The Medium Is the Monster shows how we cannot talk about technology-that human-made monstrosity-today without conjuring Frankenstein, thanks in large part to its Canadian adaptations by pop culture icons such as David Cronenberg, William Gibson, Margaret Atwood, and Deadmau5. In the unexpected connections illustrated by The Medium Is the Monster, McCutcheon brings a fresh approach to studying adaptations, popular culture, and technology."-- Provided by publisher

Herman Melville (Critical Lives) Kevin J. Hayes Reaktion Books, Limited, Reaktion Books Ltd., London, 2017
Herman Melville is hailed as one of the greats—if not __the__ greatest—of American literature. Born in New York in 1819, he first achieved recognition for his daring stylistic innovations, but it was __Moby-Dick__ that would win him global fame. In this new critical biography, Kevin J. Hayes surveys Melville’s major works and sheds new light on the writer’s unpredictable professional and personal life. Hayes opens the book with an exploration of the revival of interest in Melville’s work thirty years after his death, which coincided with the aftermath of World War I and the rise of modernism. He goes on to examine the composition and reception of Melville’s works, including his first two books, __Typee__ and __Omoo__, and the novels, short fiction, and poetry he wrote during the forty years after the publication of __Moby-Dick__. The political thought of Henry David Thoreau : privatism and the practice of philosophy Jonathan McKenzie University Press of Kentucky, Lexington, Kentucky, 2016
Today, Henry David Thoreau's status as one of America's most influential public intellectuals remains unchallenged. Recent scholarship on Thoreau has highlighted his activism as a committed antislavery reformer and proto-environmentalist whose life became a seminal model for the image of the liberal conscience. While modern scholars have firmly established Thoreau's relevance, their focus on his public activism has undervalued the complexity and range of his contributions to American political thought and has neglected crucial facets of his philosophy regarding democratic citizenship. In The Political Thought of Henry David Thoreau, Jonathan McKenzie analyzes not only Thoreau's well-known works but also his journals and correspondence to provide a fresh portrait of the Sage of Walden as a radical individualist. This new account examines the influence that ancient philosophers, particularly the Stoics, had on Thoreau and demonstrates his importance as one of the best modern interpreters of Socrates's vision of the self. McKenzie also argues that Thoreau's own political life was shaped by a theory of privatism that encouraged both a radical simplification of one's commitments and regular engagement in experiments that plumbed life for its most essential values. Shunning grand abstractions and cosmopolitanism in favor of the wonders of daily life, Thoreau's work provides a critique of political and social life that seeks to restore the wholeness of the human subject by rescuing it from the clutches of public concerns. Indeed, McKenzie's nuanced, provocative analysis reveals Thoreau as a multifaceted philosopher who brilliantly wrestled with the complexities of ethical participation in modern democracy. Citizenship, Inequality, and Difference: Historical Perspectives (The Lawrence Stone Lectures, 9) Frederick Cooper Princeton University Press, Princeton University Press, Princeton, New Jersey, 2018
A succinct and comprehensive history of the development of citizenship from the Roman Empire to the present day Citizenship, Inequality, and Difference offers a concise and sweeping overview of citizenship's complex evolution, from ancient Rome to the present. Political leaders and thinkers still debate, as they did in Republican Rome, whether the presumed equivalence of citizens is compatible with cultural diversity and economic inequality. Frederick Cooper presents citizenship as "claim-making"--the assertion of rights in a political entity. What those rights should be and to whom they should apply have long been subjects for discussion and political mobilization, while the kind of political entity in which claims and counterclaims have been made has varied over time and space. Citizenship ideas were first shaped in the context of empires. The relationship of citizenship to "nation" and "empire" was hotly debated after the revolutions in France and the Americas, and claims to "imperial citizenship" continued to be made in the mid-twentieth century. Cooper examines struggles over citizenship in the Spanish, French, British, Ottoman, Russian, Soviet, and American empires, and he explains the reconfiguration of citizenship questions after the collapse of empires in Africa and India. He explores the tension today between individualistic and social conceptions of citizenship, as well as between citizenship as an exclusionary notion and flexible and multinational conceptions of citizenship. Citizenship, Inequality, and Difference is a historically based reflection on some of the most fundamental issues facing human societies in the past and present. * World General Modern Civilization History Cover 1 Title 4 Copyright 5 CONTENTS 6 Preface 8 INTRODUCTION Citizenship and Belonging 14 CHAPTER 1 Imperial Citizenship from the Roman Republic to the Edict of Caracalla 40 CHAPTER 2 Citizenship and Empire—Europe and Beyond 54 CHAPTER 3 Empires, Nations, and Citizenship in the Twentieth Century 106 CONCLUSION Citizenship in an Unequal World 156 Notes 164 Index 208

The Shape of the Ruins : A Novel Juan Gabriel Vasquez; Anne McLean Penguin Publishing Group, Penguin Random House LLC, New York, New York, 2018
A sweeping tale of conspiracy theories, assassinations, and twisted obsessions — the much anticipated masterpiece from Juan Gabriel Vásquez. The Shape of the Ruins is a masterly story of conspiracy, political obsession, and literary investigation. A man is arrested at a museum in Colombia for attempting to steal the bullet-ridden suit of an assassin. The incident barely makes the news though the political murder this assassin committed years before set off riots that ushered in a decade of bloody civil war in the country — "La Violencia" — a time that still echos throughout Colombia. Soon this theft takes on greater meaning as it becomes a thread in a widening web of popular obsessions with conspiracy theories and the truth; and it haunts the people who feel that only they know the real truth behind these killings. This novel explores the darkest moments of a country's past and brings to life the hidden characters who have...

Knowledge Games: How Playing Games Can Solve Problems, Create Insight, and Make Change (Tech.edu: A Hopkins Series on Education and Technology) Karen Schrier Johns Hopkins University Press, Johns Hopkins University Press, Baltimore, 2016
Are games the knowledge-producers of the future? Imagine if new knowledge and insights came not just from research centers, think tanks, and universities but also from games, of all things. Video games have been viewed as causing social problems, but what if they actually helped solve them? This question drives Karen Schriers Knowledge Games , which seeks to uncover the potentials and pitfalls of using games to make discoveries, solve real-world problems, and better understand our world. For example, so-called knowledge gamessuch as Foldit , a protein-folding puzzle game, SchoolLife , which crowdsources bullying interventions, and Reverse the Odds , in which mobile game players analyze breast cancer dataare already being used by researchers to gain scientific, psychological, and humanistic insights. Schrier argues that knowledge games are potentially powerful because of their ability to motivate a crowd of problem solvers within a dynamic system while also tapping into the innovative data processing and computational abilities of games. In the near future, Schrier asserts, knowledge games may be created to understand and predict voting behavior, climate concerns, historical perspectives, online harassment, susceptibility to depression, or optimal advertising strategies, among other things. In addition to investigating the intersection of games, problem solving, and crowdsourcing, Schrier examines what happens when knowledge emerges from games and game players rather than scientists, professionals, and researchers. This accessible book also critiques the limits and implications of games and considers how they may redefine what it means to produce knowledge, to play, to educate, and to be a citizen.

The age of progress, 1871-1929 Tim McNeese Lorenz Educational Press;Milliken Publishing, 2002
(1871-1929) The Age of Progress covers the latter decades of the 19th century and the early years of the 20th. Building on the advances of the industrial revolution, this "post-revolutionary" period is similarly defined by remarkable technological and industrial innovation. An era of firsts--steel bridges, sewing machines, bicycles, typewriters, radios, automobiles, airplanes, electric light bulbs, the telephone, photography, and the first motion picture--the Age of Progress gave birth to unprecedented modes of productivity, transportation, and communication. Thomas Alva Edison, Wilbur and Orville Wright, and Charles Darwin are among the historic figures discussed. Special emphasis is given to the sociology of industrial advancement--most notably the development of leisure. Challenging map exercises and provocative review questions encourage meaningful reflection and historical analysis. Tests and answer keys included

T.S. Eliot Colin MacCabe Northcote House Publishers, Liverpool University Press, Liverpool University Press / Books, Devon, 2006
T.S. Eliots's life took him from the United States to England, from philosophy to poetry and from modern scepticism to traditional Christianity. Colin MacCabe's study places Eliot's poetry in the context of these journeys and uses Eliot's life to illuminate his poetry. This poetry, although very modest in quantity, remains one of the great artistic triumphs of the English language. In his ironic accounts of adolescent desire in'The Love Song of Alfred Prufrock'and'Portrait of a Lady', he performs masculine self-doubt with a pathos and wit that has yet to be surpassed in poem, book or song. But these early poems can seem like mere exercises beside the astonishing achievements of'Gerontion'and'The Wasteland', poems which defined a generation and which broke the mould in English verse to allow a symphony of despairing voices to bear witness to the destruction in Europe. Finally, in'Four Quartets'he forges an original form and a compelling tone to hymn both religious belief and national destiny as England faced defeat at the hands of Germany.

Translated Christianities: Nahuatl and Maya Religious Texts (Latin American Originals) Mark Z. Christensen The Pennsylvania State University Press, Pennsylvania State University Press, University Park, Pennsylvania, 2014
Beginning in the sixteenth century, ecclesiastics and others created religious texts written in the native languages of the Nahua and Yucatec Maya. These texts played an important role in the evangelization of central Mexico and Yucatan. Translated Christianities is the first book to provide readers with English translations of a variety of Nahuatl and Maya religious texts. It pulls Nahuatl and Maya sermons, catechisms, and confessional manuals out of relative obscurity and presents them to the reader in a way that illustrates similarities, differences, and trends in religious text production throughout the colonial period. The texts included in this work are diverse. Their authors range from Spanish ecclesiastics to native assistants, from Catholics to Methodists, and from sixteenth-century Nahuas to nineteenth-century Maya. Although translated from its native language into English, each text illustrates the impact of European and native cultures on its content. Medieval tales popular in Europe are transformed to accommodate a New World native audience, biblical figures assume native identities, and texts admonishing Christian behavior are tailored to meet the demands of a colonial native population. Moreover, the book provides the first translation and analysis of a Methodist catechism written in Yucatec Maya to convert the Maya of Belize and Yucatan. Ultimately, readers are offered an uncommon opportunity to read for themselves the translated Christianities that Nahuatl and Maya texts contained.

Strategic Occidentalism : On Mexican Fiction, the Neoliberal Book Market, and the Question of World Literature Ignacio M. Sanchez Prado Northwestern University Press, Chicago Distribution Center (CDC Presses), Evanston, Illinois, 2018
__Strategic Occidentalism__ examines the transformation, in both aesthetics and infrastructure, of Mexican fiction since the late 1970s. During this time a framework has emerged characterized by the corporatization of publishing, a frictional relationship between Mexican literature and global book markets, and the desire of Mexican writers to break from dominant models of national culture. In the course of this analysis, Ignacio M. Sánchez Prado engages with theories of world literature, proposing that “world literature” is a construction produced at various levels, including the national, that must be studied from its material conditions of production in specific sites. In particular, he argues that Mexican writers have engaged in a “strategic Occidentalism” in which their idiosyncratic connections with world literature have responded to dynamics different from those identified by world-systems or diffusionist theorists. __Strategic Occidentalism__ identifies three scenes in which a cosmopolitan aesthetics in Mexican world literature has been produced: Sergio Pitol’s translation of Eastern European and marginal British modernist literature; the emergence of the Crack group as a polemic against the legacies of magical realism; and the challenges of writers like Carmen Boullosa, Cristina Rivera Garza, and Ana García Bergua to the roles traditionally assigned to Latin American writers in world literature.

Passport to hell : how I survived sadistic prison guards, corrupt officials and hardened criminals in Spain's toughest prisons Sandra Gregory; Terry Daniels Summersdale Publishers Ltd - Row, Vearsa, Chichester, 2013
"Qué es esto? Qué es esto? Es cocaína!" I couldn't speak a word of Spanish but I understood the word 'cocaína' and knew that I was in a lot of trouble. I should have been paralysed with fear but it didn't seem real. I was only twenty-three.' In 1997, English holidaymaker Terry Daniels was wrongfully accused of smuggling a million pounds worth of cocaine from Brazil to Spain. Although she didn't know it then, her companion had been paid by a judge and two police officers to transport the class A drugs. Charged with drug trafficking, she was eventually granted bail but suffered a near-fatal brain haemorrhage. Once she recovered, the Spanish authorities granted her the right to return to the UK. She assumed that her ordeal was over, but it had only just begun. Five years after her arrest, Terry moved to Northern Ireland where, after giving a friend a spare key to her house, she awoke one morning to the anti-terrorist police breaking down her door. Firearms and a pipe bomb were discovered in a cupboard. Terry was arrested and although she was found not guilty, the Spanish authorities requested that she return to Spain. In 2005 she was sentenced to ten years in a maximum-security Spanish prison. She repeatedly pleaded her innocence and was eventually granted a royal pardon and released in January 2009. This is the hard-hitting account of her fight for justice, a page-turning memoir of an ordinary woman who survived and triumphed over remarkable misfortune.

The assassination of Robert F. Kennedy : the conspiracy and coverup William W. Turner, Jonn G. Christian Basic Books, 0002, 2006
Around midnight shortly after claiming victory in the California presidential primary on June 5, 1968, Senator Robert Kennedy walked into a deadly spray of gunfire. Immediately the Los Angeles Police Department concluded that the assassin, Sirhan Sirhan, had acted alone. The FBI conducted a parallel inquiry and concurred. And the vast majority of the American people accepted their opinion. In this compelling book—mysteriously suppressed on its initial publication—former FBI agent William Turner and investigative reporter Jonn Christian expose convincing evidence that Sirhan did not act alone. Based on more than ten years of intensive research, Turner and Christian raise serious questions about RFK’s murder: •What was the virtually apolitical Sirhan’s motive? •Why, if Sirhan was standing in front of his victim, were the fatal wounds in the back of Kennedy’s head? •Why were there too many spent bullets (some the wrong size) for Sirhan’s gun? •Did the LAPD discredit witnesses, try to make them alter their stories, and destroy key records? •Was Sirhan, in fact, a “Manchurian Candidate,” programmed through hypnosis either to kill Kennedy or divert attention while others did the job? The Assassination of Robert F. Kennedy makes the case that the murder of RFK, and the subsequent police and government investigations, bear all the hallmarks of the conspiracy surrounding the assassination of John F. Kennedy and the resulting Warren Commission. It is a fascinating and chilling reexamination of the tragic events that undoubtedly changed the course of American history.

Mad Men, Mad World : Sex, Politics, Style, and the 1960s Lauren M. E. Goodlad, Lilya Kaganovsky, Robert A. Rushing Duke University Press Books, Duke University Press, Durham and London, 2013
Since the show's debut in 2007, __Mad Men__ has invited viewers to immerse themselves in the lush period settings, ruthless Madison Avenue advertising culture, and arresting characters at the center of its 1960s fictional world. __Mad Men, Mad World__ is a comprehensive analysis of this groundbreaking TV series. Scholars from across the humanities consider the AMC drama from a fascinating array of perspectives, including fashion, history, architecture, civil rights, feminism, consumerism, art, cinema, and the serial format, as well as through theoretical frames such as critical race theory, gender, queer theory, global studies, and psychoanalysis. In the introduction, the editors explore the show's popularity; its controversial representations of race, class, and gender; its powerful influence on aesthetics and style; and its unique use of period historicism and advertising as a way of speaking to our neoliberal moment. __Mad Men, Mad World__ also includes an interview with Phil Abraham, an award-winning __Mad Men__ director and cinematographer. Formless formation : vignettes for the end of this world Sandra Ruiz, Hypatia Vourloumis Autonomedia, Minor Compositions, 2021
Formless Formation is an experimental project conceived and co-authored by two performance theorists working in critical aesthetics and political thought. The book is an insurgent revolt, walking side by side with plural and planetary anticolonial forces organizing against debt, expropriative extractive capital, environmental catastrophe, and the militarized policing of people and borders. It is in direct conversation with all Indigenous, Black, Brown, ecological, queer, diasporic movements and struggles against capitalist predatory formations across time and space. Through shared resonances across differing aesthetic life-worlds and solidarities that bypass the nation-state, Ruiz and Vourloumis bring to the forefront performative and aesthetic practices and methods that address current and future social organizing.

The political thought of Henry David Thoreau : privatism and the practice of philosophy Jonathan McKenzie The University Press of Kentucky, Lexington, Kentucky, 2016
The artist's reality : philosophies of art Mark Rothko, Christopher Rothko, Kate Prizel Rothko Yale University Press, Yale University Press, New Haven, Conn, 2004

One of the most important artists of the twentieth century, Mark Rothko (1903–1970) created a new and impassioned form of abstract painting over the course of his career. Rothko also wrote a number of essays and critical reviews during his lifetime, adding his thoughtful, intelligent, and opinionated voice to the debates of the contemporary art world. Although the artist never published a book of his varied and complex views, his heirs indicate that he occasionally spoke of the existence of such a manuscript to friends and colleagues. Stored in a New York City warehouse since the artist’s death more than thirty years ago, this extraordinary manuscript, titled The Artist’s Reality, is now being published for the first time.
Probably written around 1940–41, this revelatory book discusses Rothko’s ideas on the modern art world, art history, myth, beauty, the challenges of being an artist in society, the true nature of “American art,” and much more. The Artist’s Reality also includes an introduction by Christopher Rothko, the artist’s son, who describes the discovery of the manuscript and the complicated and fascinating process of bringing the manuscript to publication. The introduction is illustrated with a small selection of relevant examples of the artist’s own work as well as with reproductions of pages from the actual manuscript.
The Artist’s Reality will be a classic text for years to come, offering insight into both the work and the artistic philosophies of this great painter.

Death Of A Charming Man (hamish Macbeth, #10) Beaton, M C Grand Central Publishing, Hamish MacBeth 10, 0
Now that Priscilla Halburton-Smythe has agreed to marry him, Police Sergeant Hamish Macbeth can't imagine a more perfect life. There's not much crime in his remote Scottish village of Lochdubh, nothing much at all to do but fish, drink coffee, and slouch around. And now to spend time with lovely Priscilla. But his days aren't as tranquil as his dreams. For one thing, Priscilla's renovation schemes are driving him out of his cottage. Not to mention her ambitious plans for his career as a policeman away from Lochdubh. This might be a good time to find out why Peter Hynd's arrival in nearby Drim was causing so much trouble. An attractive, unmarried man with an independent income would always attract attention in such a small place. But this time Hynd's arrival seems to have caused bitter rivalry among the women of Drim. Hamish finds their petty fights amusing and a clever excuse to avoid Priscilla and her schemes for a new electric stove (to replace his beloved woodburning appliance), a posh new bathroom, and virtuous nutrition. Amusing, that is, until death threats, physical abuse, and murder make statistical history in one of Scotland'

Industry and Revolution : Social and Economic Change in the Orizaba Valley, Mexico Aurora Gómez-Galvarriato Harvard University, Department of Sanskrit & Indian Studies, Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 2013
The Mexican Revolution has long been considered a revolution of peasants. But Aurora Gómez-Galvarriato's investigation of the mill towns of the Orizaba Valley reveals that industrial workers played a neglected but essential role in shaping the Revolution. By tracing the introduction of mechanized industry into the valley, she connects the social and economic upheaval unleashed by new communication, transportation, and production technologies to the political unrest of the revolutionary decade. Industry and Revolution makes a convincing argument that the Mexican Revolution cannot be understood apart from the changes wrought by the Industrial Revolution, and thus provides a fresh perspective on both transformations.By organizing collectively on a wide scale, the spinners and weavers of the Orizaba Valley, along with other factory workers throughout Mexico, substantially improved their living and working conditions and fought to secure social and civil rights and reforms. Their campaigns fed the imaginations of the masses. The Constitution of 1917, which embodied the core ideals of the Mexican Revolution, bore the stamp of the industrial workers'influence. Their organizations grew powerful enough to recast the relationship between labor and capital, not only in the towns of the valley, but throughout the entire nation. The story of the Orizaba Valley offers insight into the interconnections between the social, political, and economic history of modern Mexico. The forces unleashed by the Mexican and the Industrial revolutions remade the face of the nation and, as Gómez-Galvarriato shows, their consequences proved to be enduring.

The ghosts of songs : the film art of the Black Audio Film Collective ; 1982-1998 ; [this book was publ. to accompany the exhibition The Ghosts of Songs: a Retrospective of the Black Audio Film Collective, Foundation for Art & Creative Technology, Liverpool, England, February 2 - April 1 2007 ; Arnolfini, Bristol, England April 27 - June 22 2007 ; Institute of International Visual Arts, London, England, Whitechapel Art Gallery, London, England May 28 - August 3 2008 Kodwo Eshun; Anjalika Sagar; Exhibition The Ghosts of Songs: a Retrospective of the Black Audio Film Collective 2007 Liverpool u.a; Exhibition The Ghosts of Songs: a Retrospective of the Black Audio Film Collective Liverpool University Press : Foundation for Art and Creative Technology, Changing Media, Changing Europe, 1, 2007
The Ghosts of Songs is the first book-length exploration of the work of the Black Audio Film Collective. The collective, founded in 1982 and dissolved in 1998, comprised John Akomfrah, Lina Gopaul, Reece Auguiste, Avril Johnson, Trevor Mathison, Edward George and David Lawson, and for sixteen years their films addressed the social, political and racial crises of Thatcher's Britain and beyond. However, it would be limiting their achievement to see them either as merely challenging the hegemonic forms of mass media, or conversely as polemicist film activists. In films such as Expeditions, Handsworth Songs, Seven Songs for Malcolm X and Twilight City the collective explored and developed a black film aesthetic. The essays in this volume, contributed by Jean Fisher, Kodwo Eshun, Kobena Mercer and Okwui Enwezor, argue that they inaugurated themselves as an artist-group, laying claim to the right to reconfigure the space of cinema around the Afrodiasporic subject, reconceptualizing lighting, film stock, d About the Author Kodwo Eshun is a lecturer in visual cultures at Goldsmiths College, University of London and the author of More Brilliant Than the Sun: Adventures in Sonic Fiction . Anjalika Sagar is cofounder, with Eshun, of the artists' collective the Otolith Group.

Down & Dirty: The Plot to Steal the Presidency Jake Tapper Little, Brown and Company, 1, 20010403
Usually when Americans go to Florida for a spell, they come back looking better--tan, refreshed, relaxed, a few pina coladas under their belts. It didn't quite work out that way for America as a whole. What happened in Florida brought out the ugliest side of American politics. Now acclaimed journalist Jake Tapper takes us deep inside the battle to steal the presidency of the United States in a book that reveals, once and for all, what actually happened, and who got away with what. Down and Dirty brilliantly explains exactly how the Bush forces out-maneuvered the Gore team, from the courtrooms to the canvassing boards, from the press rooms to the corridors of the legislature. Tapper paints vivid portraits of all the major players--Katherine Harris, Jeb Bush, Sander Sauls, David Boies, William Rhenquist, Warren Christopher, Jim Baker, Phil Beck, and others--drawing upon exclusive insider information and interviews. He puts together all of the pieces and reveals shocking details about what happened behind closed doors, what deals were cut and who did what. And he gives us wickedly perceptive insight into the two men at the center of it a
