描述
Human intelligence isn’t just located in the brain. Our bodies are marvelously sophisticated and complex, with a variety of autonomic systems that help maintain our health without us ever having to think about them. But how exactly do all these physiological structures actually work?
In __Our Intelligent Bodies__, physiology professor Gary F. Merrill takes you on a guided tour through the human body. You’ll learn how our eyes are designed to detect unimaginably small bursts of light and how our ears contain bundles of tiny hairs, each one attuned to different sound frequencies. You’ll also discover how our hearts are smart enough to compensate for skipped beats and irregular rhythms and how our pulmonary system adjusts for low oxygen levels. You’ll even find out why the gut is sometimes called the “second brain,” its reflexes controlled by millions of neurons.
Written in a fun, easy-to-comprehend style and filled with illuminating analogies, __Our Intelligent Bodies__ also brings readers up to date on cutting-edge research into the wonders of human physiology. It will give you a new appreciation for the smart decisions our bodies are making when our brains aren’t paying attention.

备用描述
« This is the first book (trade text) written by a physiologist for the generally-educated public on a topic of vast interest (our bodies). It represents the third book in a series written by Dr. Merrill. The ten chapters that comprise the book illustrate examples of how the major organ systems solve problems they are confronted with. For example, when more blood flow is needed by one organ to perform a demanding physical activity (e.g. pleasurable jogging or competitive marathoning) where does the additional blood flow come from? The body has solved this problem by the intelligent behavior of the cardiovascular system. It can distribute/redistribute blood, oxygen, and nutrient supplies to actively performing skeletal muscle by diverting them, temporarily, away from other organs/tissues (e.g. gut, liver, kidneys, etc.) that are relatively less important at the time. The kidneys are another marvelous example of intelligent problem solving by our bodies. For example, they are charged with the continuous responsibility of balancing body water and body salt content. They do this, in part, by regularly assessing salt concentrations in the three main body water compartments (intracellular, interstitial, intravascular). They also complete the task by evaluating the fullness of the circulatory system and determining when it is too full, when it lacks adequate volume, and when it is in a stable steady state. This is important because we are constantly losing and gaining water and salts without even thinking about it. Those who have already read and enjoyed Our Marvelous Bodies (RUP, 2008), Our Aging Bodies (RUP, 2015) will want to read Our Intelligent Bodies (RUP, 2020). »-- Résumé de l'éditeur
