This is the story of Eydon, a Northamptonshire village that existed before the Domesday Book, and in many respects represents a microcosm of rural England. A family memoir as well as a village history, it is the fruit of a long lifetime of curiosity and diligent research on the part of the local tailor, who wrote it for his "own kith and kin and for the man in the street". It explains the drastic effects of the the Enclosures in the 18th century on the lives of country people, and the other historic influences which have made an English village what it is today. "Old Syd" Tyrrell shows a gift for bringing the past to life and he shares with the reader his devotion to his village and his native fields.
