Abstract: A teaching guide for instructors of young or handicapped children explores the possibilities of using cooking lessons to enrich children's education and to teach new skills. Cooking can improve perceptions, vocabulary, verbal expression, number concepts, coordination, and expand nutritional horizons. Suggestions are given for using the pictorial recipes and for integrating the concepts into other activities. The lessons begin with instruction on simple safety procedures, on following directions, and on recognizing utensils. Directions given for "reading" the symbols in the recipes emphasize the skills of reading from left to right, top to bottom, and sequentially. Recipes vary in difficulty and skill usage, but all are presented uniformly--"reading" the recipe, discussing ingredients and procedures, cooking, tasting, discussing results, and sending the recipe home to share with the family
