From the beginning of the Allied occupation of Berlin in 1946, through the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961, the city was a well-known "den of espionage" and was perhaps the most significant center of activity during the early stages of the Cold War. On the Front Lines of the Cold War makes use of declassified materials from both sides of the conflict to shed light on the struggle that helped shape the early days of the post-World War II 20th Century. Edited by Donald P. Steury, curator of the CIA's Historical Intelligence Collection and a senior historian on the CIA History Staff, On the Front Lines of the Cold War uses a variety of documents including internal memoranda written by American intelligence personnel in Berlin, field intelligence reports, and National Intelligence Estimates, to recreate what Steury calls the "classical period of the intelligence war in Berlin."
