描述
In an Influential Fashion profiles 164 fashion designers and retailers from many countries who have had the most impact on American dress and culture from the late 19th century to the year 2000. Each entry introduces a fashion personality or retailer whose influence on the industry reflected societal, political, and/or economic change. The commercial side of fashion, neglected in most fashion encyclopedias, is explored here, with details of licensing agreements and marketing innovations not easily found elsewhere. Students and professionals in fashion design, retailing, costume research, and social history will all find this book a valuable addition to their libraries.
Each entry includes the birth and death dates of designers, their education and training, career highlights and accomplishments, and awards they have won. The entry describes the designer or retailer's signature styles, with a keen emphasis on the designer's contributions to American fashion design and culture. As appropriate, the entry summarizes any licensing agreements and influential marketing innovations. Web sites, lists of museums and fashion design schools, and numerous appendices make In an Influential Fashion a complete resource on American fashion history for the late 19th and 20th centuries.
From Library Journal From Adidas to Zoram, Versace, and Edith Head, this volume chronicles the achievements of 164 renowned international designers and retailers who have most influenced American dress and culture from the late 19th century to the present. Written by Kellogg (Career Education Corp.), Amy T. Peterson (American Intercontinental Univ.), and Stefani Bay (Illinois Inst. of Art), the alphabetically arranged entries include biographical data, education, influences, awards, additional references, and the contribution the subject made to fashion. An appendix, a glossary, and cross references are included, and illustrations are placed throughout the text. The text closely examines the relationship between cultural development and style, showing, for instance, that the passage of the 19th Amendment (which gave women the right to vote) saw the rise of the brazen flapper. Those researching marketing, costume design, or social history will find this work both easy to use and full of interesting bits of trivia that make for excellent reading...

From Booklist Entrants in this book were chosen not for their artistic merit alone but because their influence on fashion is reflective of societal, political, or economic change. The focus is primarily on the U.S. Examples range from Coco Chanel, Calvin Klein, and Vera Wang to FUBU, the Gap, and Nike. Each entry contains basic biographical information about the designer or founding information about the company, describes signature styles, and outlines the career or company history. When appropriate, the entry summarizes licensing agreements and influential marketing innovations and defines the entrants' significance within fashion. Each entry is from one to two pages long and is completed by a short list of readings. Where available, Web site addresses are also included. The black-and-white illustrations were created specifically for this book.
The glossary following the entries is only slightly more than one page and could have been expanded. Appendixes include a chart of designers listed alphabetically showing the time periods in which they were active, a list of designers and retailers broken down by country and by specialty, a list of colleges with fashion design programs, and a list of museums with costume collections. This is followed by a short list of professional organizations and a selective bibliography of less than three pages.
This book offers good general coverage of the topic and is recommended for high-school, public, and academic libraries. Some recent comparable volumes with more complete coverage are Con temporary Fashion (St. James, 1995), which contains hundreds of black-and-white photos plus much more complete bibliographies; The Fashion Book (Phaidon, 1998), which includes excellent color photos with brief biographies; and Fashion: The Century of the Designer, 1900-1999 (Konemann, 2000), which includes exquisite color photos and an extensive glossary of terminology. Any of these titles should make the current book supplementary. RBB

Those researching marketing, costume design, or social history will find this work both easy to use and full of interesting bits of trivia that make for excellent reading. For instance, readers may be surprised to learn that Civil War generals wore Brooks Brothers uniforms and that Charles Lindbergh chose Bass aviation boots on his first transatlantic flight. Librarians looking to expand their coverage of social history will want to add this title to their reference collections. Recommended for McMickle (homiletics, Ashland Theological Seminary; Preaching to the Black Middle Class) has compiled a flawed but useful one-volume reference on the history of African American Christianity, dating from the 18th century. The nearly 200 entries comprise excerpts from the highly esteemed works of well-known African American historians, including Carter G. Woodson, C. Eric Lincoln, James Washington, James H. Cone, Gayrud S. Wilmore, Henry H. Mitchell, and Albert Raboteau. Instead of an A-Z format, however, the book is organized into 11 separate sections: "Founders and Denominational Leaders," "Preachers," "Teachers and Scholars," "Politicians," "Prophets," "Nationalists," "Cult Leaders," "Singers and Songwriters," "Movements," "Terms," and "Events." This organization complicates usage, making the index absolutely essential if the reader is to locate information. Unfortunately, there is no separate list of the main entries. McMickle would have done better to follow the of standard reference works like Notable Black American Women, edited by Jessie Carnie Smith. Furthermore, that reference has 22 entries on African American women religious leaders, of which McMickle lists only seven a serious shortcoming. There are three notable appendixes; a glossary of movements, terms, and events; a time line of African American religious history; and a bibliography. Despite the drawbacks, no other single-volume works are available on this subject. Recommended with hesitation for public and academic libraries. James A. Overbeck, Atlanta-Fulton P.L. Syst.
