Before Adam Walsh there were no faces on milk cartons, no Amber Alerts, no National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, no federal databases of crimes against children, no pedophile registry. His 1981 abduction and murder?unsolved for over a quarter of a century?forever changed America. One sunny July morning in 1981, Rev? Walsh and her six-year-old son Adam stopped by the local Sears to pick up some new lamps. Enchanted by a video game at the store's entrance, Adam begged Rev? to let him try it out while she shopped. When she returned a few minutes later, Adam was gone. The shock of Adam's murder, and of the inability of the police and the FBI to find his killer, radically altered American innocence and our ideas about childhood. Gone forever were the days when parents would allow their kids out of the house with the casual instruction "Be home by dark!" Rev? and John Walsh?who would go on to create America's Most Wanted?became advocates for the transformation of law enforcement's response to and handling of such cases. Prompted by the Walshes' activism, Congress passed the Missing Children Act in 1982, and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children was founded in 1984. While our lives have been significantly altered by Adam Walsh's case, few of us know the whole story?how, after more than twenty-seven years of relentless investigation, decorated Miami Beach homicide detective Joe Matthews finally identified Adam's killer. Bringing Adam Home is the definitive account of this horrifying crime?which, like the Lindbergh kidnapping fifty years earlier, captured public attention?and its aftermath, a true story of tragedy, love, faith, and dedication. It reveals the pain and tenacity of a family determined to find justice, the failed police work that allowed a killer to remain uncharged, and the determined efforts of one cop who accomplished what an entire legal system could not. As harrowing as In Cold Blood, yet ultimately uplifting, Bringing Adam Home is the riveting story of a triumph of justice and the enduring power of love.

This is the story of an unfathomable crime that would forever embed itself into the collective American psyche and lead to sweeping legislative changes in the way that missing person cases are handled. In 1981, Adam Walsh was a healthy and bright 6 1/2 year old boy with his entire life ahead of him. On the afternoon of July 27th, Adam accompanied his mom, Revé, to the local Sears department store to look for lamps that had been advertised as on sale. Upon entering, Adam noticed a kiosk featuring the newly released Atari gaming system and became transfixed. He beseeched his mom to let him stay and watch a few older boys play the demo. Reluctantly, she agreed, reasoning that Adam was an obedient child and the lamp aisle was only a short distance away. A few minutes later, after an employee confirmed the desired lamps were out of stock, Revé hurried back to retrieve Adam and was horrified to find that he had vanished. As it later turned out, a careless teenaged 'security guard' had become irritated with the boys' bickering and ordered them out of the store, lumping a helpless and timid Adam in with them. Disoriented and scared, Adam was lured away by a deranged sexual predator and serial killer. After a hapless search by Florida police, Adam's severed head was found in a canal. The ensuing months and years became a descent into literal Hell on Earth for the Walsh family, as they dealt with unbelievable incompetence from egomaniacal authorities who senselessly and unforgivably botched the investigation. Finally, a quarter of a century later, one retired detective took a fresh look at the case and single-handedly pieced together a horrifying narrative of what really happened that day, and the disgusting extent to which law enforcement officials covered their blunders in order to save face. Unfortunately, Adam's killer couldn't be convicted due to having died in prison years before. This compelling account is packed with loads of evidence that will have you shaking your head in dismay and wondering how Adam's parents remained sane through it all. As we all know, his father John went on to host America's Most Wanted and Revé founded The National Center For Missing And Exploited Children. Their unwavering tenacity in the face of every parent's worst nightmare is a testament to the power and resilience of the human spirit.

There are two periods of history that pertain to missing and endangered children in the United States: before Adam Walsh, and after Adam Walsh. In the aftermath of that six-year old's abduction and slaying in 1981, everything about the nation's regard and response to missing children changed.
The shock of the crime and the inability of law enforcement to find Adam's killer put an end to innocence, and altered our very perception of childhood itself - gone forever are the days when young children burst out the doors of American homes with a casual promise to be home by dark. And, due in large part to the efforts of Adam's parents, John and Reve Walsh, the entire mechanism of law enforcement has transformed itself in an effort to protect our children.
Before Adam went missing, there were no children's faces on milk cartons and billboards, no Amber Alerts, no national Center for Missing and Abused Children, no national databases for crimes against children, no registration of pedophiles - in fact, it was easier to mobilize the FBI to search for a stolen car or missing horse than for a kidnapped child. Such facts may be sad testimony to the weariness of a modern world, but there is also an uplifting aspect to Adam's story - the 27 years of undaunted effort by decorated Miami Beach Homicide Detective, Joe Matthews, to track down Adam's killer and bring justice to bear at long last.
Bringing Adam Home tells the story - the good, the bad, and the ugly - of what it took for one cop to accomplish what an entire system of law enforcement could not. Matthews' achievement is a stirring one, reminding us that such concepts as hard work, dedication, and love, survive, and that goodness can prevail.
