The Science Quest introduces the Inquiry/Discovery instructional framework, an innovative method for captivating students? interest in science, for building their skills in scientific thinking, and for dramatically enriching their understanding of scientific content and concepts. For teachers curious how to implement?inquiry? learning as called for in the National Science Education Standards, this book provides detailed and practical guidance. It shows teachers how to transform ordinary lessons in ways that 1) encourage students to take initiative in posing scientific?inquiry? questions; and 2) enable students to independently?discover? answers to their questions by engaging in investigative practices and critically evaluating the findings. Inquiry/Discovery practices can be introduced in stages, starting with simple activities and gradually increasing the levels of challenge. The Science Quest includes everything a teacher needs to bring successful instruction, including: Extensive lesson planning and assessment tools Suggestions on working with students in teams Scores of sample lessons from varied disciplines

The inquiry/discovery instruction framework is the authors' theme and method for building students' science skills and creating scientifically informed citizens. Teachers, administrators, and education students are introduced to lesson planning in the inquiry/discovery method. This introduction is followed by several lesson examples from middle school and high school. Other chapters discuss the interrelationship of subject disciplines, working in teams, working with special needs students, assessment, and classroom management. The Science Quest claims that its inquiry/discovery framework is an innovative method of teaching, but there is really nothing new in this book. Teachers have known for decades that hands-on learning is quite effective; however the book is no less valuable in light of content learning standardized tests and relatively new federal education mandates. It is somewhat ironic that the book is probably more valuable in presenting theory over actual lesson planning, given that the authors stress classroom interaction over pedantry. The lesson plan chapters read more like didactic case histories rather than practical help from a manual. This conceptual framework makes the book more appropriate for college education students and administrators. It will certainly add value to public library collections lacking anything on this subject; however if educators are interested in implementing actual lesson plans, they would be better served consulting step-by-step manuals. Includes appendices, references, and index. Reviewer: David Adams

"The Science Quest introduces the Inquiry/Discovery instructional framework, an innovative method for captivating students' interest in science, for building their skills in scientific thinking, and for dramatically enriching their understanding of scientific content and concepts. For teachers curious about how to implement "inquiry" learning as called for in the National Science Education Standards, this book provides detailed and practical guidance. It shows teachers how to transform ordinary lessons in ways that 1) encourage students to take initiative in posing scientific "inquiry" questions; and 2) enable students to independently "discover" answers to their questions by engaging in investigative practices and critically evaluating the findings. Inquiry/Discovery practices can be introduced in stages, starting with simple activities and gradually increasing the levels of challenge. The Science Quest includes everything a teacher needs for successful instruction."--Jacket
