描述
In the dramatic and rapidly developing field of neural transplantation for CNS repair, the most powerful contributor has been the vital research focusing on stem cells. In __Neural Cell Transplantation: Methods and Protocols__, leading experts in the field examine tried-and-true laboratory techniques in order to supply scientists with a firm foundation upon which further advancements can be based. Written in the highly successful __Methods in Molecular BiologyTM__ series format, the chapters of this volume include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible protocols, and Notes sections, which examine tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls.
Cutting-edge and easy to use, __Neural Cell Transplantation: Methods and Protocols__ provides the most thorough and essential protocols that will allow new generations of neuroscientists to enter and contribute to this uniquely inspiring field.

In this book, the authors discuss the current understanding of the management of degenerative diseases of the CNS.
Purpose:The main purpose is to provide, in a stepwise fashion, the methods involved in the production of stem cell lines and transplantation into the central nervous system.
Audience:Neurologists, neurosurgeons, neurophysiologists, and neuroscientists are the intended audience. The authors are recognized experts in the field.
Features:The introductory chapters summarize where we are in terms of stem cells and what aspects should be considered in their preparation prior to transplantation. However, one of the major drawbacks of these first chapters is the lack of a profound analysis of the ethical and religious concerns associated with human stem cells and what alternatives, including omental cells, could be considered to circumvent the limitations of available tissue. Otherwise, the book flows easily and describes the most common research and technical protocols associated with human stem cell handling and separation. It is a well-referenced and illustrated book and worth its value for most labs involved in the research and clinical applications of the technology, in particular for degenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and others. Another drawback is the brief description of the clinical applications in contrast to the extensive description of the protocols. As a result, the book is a comprehensive reference for neuroscientists, but not so much for clinicians.
Assessment:This is a good book for neuroscientists who are directly involved in the separation and production of human stem cells.
