Dries This is a single author softbound book on techniques in noninvasive cardiovascular monitoring, including electrocardiography, sphygmomanometry, Doppler ultrasound monitoring, and electrical impedance monitoring. It is part of the Principles and Practice series originating in the United Kingdom. Provided is a practical overview of noninvasive cardiovascular monitoring with descriptions emphasizing development of technique rather than a comprehensive background view of physiology. Anesthesiologists and intensivists are an appropriate readership for this work. The author is a senior intensivist from the City Hospital in Birmingham. Fifteen chapters are included in this 200-page text. Techniques discussed include electrocardiography; non-invasive blood pressure monitoring, including oscillometry and oscillotonometry; home blood pressure monitoring; and sources for technical error in these methods. Chapters are concise and easy to read. A generous number of references are provided, and they date to within two to three work years of publication and include important work. Figures are black and white and easy to read. Where appropriate, mathematical assumptions underlying the technologies are described. The table of contents is adequate in that it introduces chapter content by title. The index is moderate in size, but adequate for a small book. The reader will find valuable insight into commonly used techniques in this text. However, some developments, such as recent devices introduced in the bioimpedance area, are not included. Unfortunately, this volume in the Principles and Practice series does not include capnography or transcutaneous oximetry.
