备用描述
"Sceptres and Sciences has as its focus science, aesthetics and ideology in Spain and Spanish America between 1680 and 1740. Catholic humanists began to move away from scholastic philosophy and the aesthetics of cultism and conceptism during this period, which should be viewed as a bridge to the experimental philosophy and neoclassical aesthetic of the later eighteenth century. The four main authors examined in Sceptres and Sciences were Hispanic humanists who embraced the via media - what Richard Popkin has called 'the third force of seventeenth-century thought' - of epicurean atomists and moralists in their scientific and non-scientific writings. The influence of Bacon and Gassendi on the Spanish Republic of Letters, already visible in the writings of Sor Juana Ines da la Cruz (New Spain) and Gabriel Alvarez de Toledo (Spain), continued into the third and fourth decades of the eighteenth century, when the philosophies of Newton and Vico appeared in the writings of Pedro de Peralta Barnuevo (Peru) and Francisco Botello de Moraes (Spain, Italy, Portugal)." "Sceptres and Sciences argues convincingly that previous research on the Hispanic Late Baroque has underweighted the ideologies of ethnicity and empire embedded in Cartesianism and French neoclassicalism. By analysing the concept of Gothicism (Gothicisme) and such terms as Muscovite, Tartar, Pharisee and pharaonic, this study reconstructs the mental map on which Northern Europe and the Near and Middle East were spaces of the imagination, or barbarism, and explains how Spain with its semitic inheritance and Austrian imperial tradition occupied a space twice removed from reason, or civilization. Gothicism's legacy is examined in the final chapter, which discusses the invention of the Spanish American Middle Ages in the nineteenth century and the baroquization of Latin America in the twentieth century."--Jacket
