"As a member of the innovating Generation of 1898, Miguel de Unamuno is a major figure within a generation of major figures in Spanish literature. Among the first in the Latin countries to read Kierkegaard in the original Danish and to appreciate his enormous importance, Unamuno became an existentialist thinker well before the word became popular. Martin Nozick studies the full range of Unamuno's writing, from confessional and philosophic essay through novel, short story, drama, and verse.
