描述
In History of Animals , Aristotle analyzes differencesin parts, activities, modes of life, and characteracross the animal kingdom, in preparation for establishing their causes, which are the concern of his other zoological works. Over 500 species of animals are shellfish, insects, birds, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and mammalsincluding human beings. In Books IIV, Aristotle gives a comparative survey of internal and external body parts, including tissues and fluids, and of sense faculties and voice. Books VVI study reproductive methods, breeding habits, and embryogenesis as well as some secondary sex differences. In Books VIIIX, Aristotle examines differences among animals in feeding; in habitat, hibernation, migration; in enmities and sociability; in disposition (including differences related to gender) and intelligence. Here too he describes the human reproductive system, conception, pregnancy, and obstetrics. Book X establishes the females contribution to generation. The Loeb Classical Library edition of History of Animals is in three volumes. A full index to all ten books is included in the third (Volume XI of the Aristotle edition). Related Volumes Aristotles biological corpus includes not only History of Animals , but also Parts of Animals, Movement of Animals, Progression of Animals , Generation of Animals , and significant parts of On the Soul and Parva Naturalia . Aristotles general methodologyfirst we must grasp the differences, then try to discover the causes (Ha 1.6)is applied to the study of plants by his younger co-worker and heir to his school, Enquiry into Plants studies differences across the plant kingdom, while De Causis Plantarum studies their causes. In the later ancient world, both Plinys Natural History and Aelians On the Characteristics of Animals draw significantly on Aristotles biological work.

"D.M. Balme was, at the time of his death, Professor Emeritus of Classics, Queen Mary College, London; his edition of Books VII-X has been prepared for publication by Allan Gotthelf. Aristotle's biological corpus includes not only History of Animals, but also Parts of Animals, Movement of Animals, Progression of Animals, Generation of Animals, and significant parts of On the Soul and Parva Naturalia. Aristotle's general methodology -- "first we must grasp the differences, then try to discover the causes" (HA 1.6) -- is applied to the study of plants by his younger co-worker and heir to his school, Theophrastus: Enquiry into Plants studies differences across the plant kingdom, while De Causis Plantarum studies their causes. In the later ancient world, both Pliny's Natural History and Aelian's On the Characteristics of Animals draw significantly on Aristotle's biological work. The only work by a classical author at all comparable to Aristotle's treatises on animals is Xenophon's On Horses (included in Volume VII of the Loeb edition of Xenophon)." -- Jacket.

It is impossible to be certain which, if any, of the works in the Hippocratic corpus were written by Hippocrates himself c.430 BC. His fame was such that many Greek medical writings became attributed to him. What they have in common is not dogma but, rather, constructive debate between one another. They also share a concern with meticulous observation and an insistence on physical, not supernatural, causation of illness. The writers were the pioneers of rational medicine; their ideas, dominant for centuries, still reveal to us the ideal of ethical practice, as well as the origins not just of Western medicine but of scientific method.

This excellent selection of Hippocratic treatises shows the range of writing and thought. Some are technical works on embryology, surgery or anatomy; others are addressed to a lay audience; all are informed with the spirit of inquiry. G.E.R. Lloyd's authoritative introduction puts them into their contemporary context and assesses their later influence.

This is an English translation of Plato's dialogue concerning speculation on the nature of the physical world and human beings. An extensive introduction provides careful insights to the reading of the work, the nature of Platonic dialogue and the cultural background of the Timaeus. Appendices on music, astronomy and geometry further provide guidance to the central thoughts of the dialogue. The glossary provides cross references and discussion for key words in the dialogue, functioning as springboards into the various concepts and ideas that are central to this and other Platonic dialogues and are useful starting points for any classroom discussion or personal thought.

Focus Philosophical Library translations are close to and are non-interpretative of the original text, with the notes and a glossary intending to provide the reader with some sense of the terms and the concepts as they were understood by Plato’s immediate audience.

One of the leading scholars and academic administrators of his time, Benjamin Jowett (1817-1893) was Master of Balliol College as well as Regius Professor of Greek and, for a time, vice-chancellor at Oxford University. Along with his achievements in the area of academic reform, Jowett is remembered for this four-volume translation of Plato's dialogues. Characterising Plato as the 'father of idealism', Jowett reminds readers that while 'he may be illustrated by the writings of moderns ... he must be interpreted by his own, and by his place in the history of philosophy'. In this first volume, he includes fourteen early and middle dialogues such as Charmides, Apology, Crito, and Phaedo, each presented with a separate editorial introduction. Jowett's work represents a towering achievement in the field of classical and philosophical studies that had important influence on the subsequent study of Plato

This work is a sampling of the Hippocratic Corpus, a collection of ancient Greek medical works. At the beginning, and interspersed throughout, there are discussions on the philosophy of being a physician. There is a large section about how to treat limb fractures, and the section called The Nature of Man describes the physiological theories of the time. The book ends with a discussion of embryology and a brief anatomical description of the heart. --amazon.com
