Description: This book is an easy to read, easy to understand description of the role of the emergency department nurse manager. The illustrations help the reader to further understand the written material.
Purpose: According to the author, the purpose is to use the nursing process to help clinical nurses understand and prepare for progression into management roles. The book is also intended to help experienced managers assess their professional skills and discover new/varied approaches to organizational problems. The book would be very beneficial for nurses newly transitioning into the nurse manager role and give them very clear ideas of what to expect. Experienced nurse managers may not benefit as much from the book, unless they discover new ideas or approaches they have not yet encountered.
Audience: The book is written for the nurse who desires to transition into the role of ED management and is targeted for the ED manager. According to the author, it is written for clinical nurses preparing for steady progression into a management role and experienced managers to assess professional skills. This is a valuable tool for beginning nurse managers/assistant nurse managers. The benefit for experienced nurse managers would be less as they are currently using most of these tools. However, the book could provide them with new ideas or approaches to the role.
Features: Various organizational roles are discussed and explained in this book, and it further explains how these roles integrate with ancillary services and external customers of the emergency department. Illustrated explanations further help readers to understand and process the information. The illustrations would be very helpful to the manager who has newly transitioned into the ED manager role and has no idea what to expect. The different job roles are thoroughly covered along with samples of position descriptions for several roles in the ED. The sample policy and procedures would also be very helpful to beginning nurse managers. I found the illustrations (figures), although not colorful, to be very helpful in the explanation and understanding of the written material. The least informative chapter was prehospital collaboration -- I would like to have read less about that and more about current ED issues. There was a word left out on page 75 and the author was referred to as she on page 116.
Assessment: This book is a useful, easy to read and understand tool for clinical nurses desiring transition into the role of ED nurse managers or assistant nurse managers. The illustrations and figures are valuable tools for beginning ED managers. The varied approaches to ED management give the new manager food for thought and a beginning knowledge to make their new role easier to adjust to. This is the first book I have read on the subject of ED management.
