This book is a collection of speeches by M. Hayes Mizell. The book is divided into three parts. In part 1, Mizell reviews some of the challenges middle schools must overcome to become effective places of teaching and learning. His suggestions range from developing a new kind of middle school principal to better serving young people's "raging" intellects and the adoption of a "whatever it takes" philosophy that will lead to improved schools. In part 2, Mizell reminds his audiences that the key to successful reform is an unwavering commitment to help students learn. While some might encounter difficulties to better schools, everyone must keep his or her eye on the ultimate goal--serving "all children well." In part 3, Mizell cautions that "academic standards do not guarantee success." However, when coupled with professional development, they can be useful tools to help ensure students move forward academically and "help schools and educators become more accountable for their results." The book concludes with a speech in which Mizell reviewed the history of the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation's Program for Student Achievement and listed some of the most important lessons from his 10 years of experience as director of the program.
