描述
Atlas of Virtual Colonoscopy thoroughly revises and updates Abraham Dachman’s bestselling first edition. Joined in this edition by co-editor Andrea Laghi, Dr. Dachman has expanded the focus of the text to cover fundamental topics of this rapidly evolving technology, including the history of virtual colonoscopy, a review of clinical trial data from throughout the world, and a presentation of clinical background information. Also included are chapters covering patient preparation and tagging, performing and reporting virtual colonoscopy, viewing methods, MR colonography, and computer aided detection. The second part of the text presents an atlas of high-resolution images with detailed explanations of teaching points, covering normal anatomy; sessile, pedunculated, diminutive and flat lesions; masses; stool and diverticula; and common pitfalls. Atlas of Virtual Colonoscopy is a valuable resource for all radiologists and gastroenterologists interested in learning the fundamentals of this exciting technique.
Doody Review Services Reviewer: Jason A. Mehling, M.D.(University of Colorado Health Sciences Center)
Description: This is an introduction to the technical aspects of obtaining and interpreting virtual colonoscopy. The second half of the book is an atlas of normal, abnormal and normal variants in virtual colonoscopy.
Purpose: The purpose is to discuss the technical aspects of obtaining, interpreting, and displaying a new area in radiology, known as virtual colonoscopy or CT colonoscopy. The second half of the book is an atlas of virtual colonoscopy, which is intended to provide radiologists with representative images of normal colon, abnormal lesions and artifacts.
Audience: The editor states the intended audience is radiologists, gastroenterologists, practitioners, researchers, patients, and students. The audience is more likely the fellow, novice or experienced body imager who is becoming familiar with a new procedure for imaging the colon. According to the editor, this is the first atlas on this subject, and is written by experts in the field. The editor enlists the help of several authorities in the field of virtual colonoscopy.
Features: The first half of the book covers many technical issues related to virtual colonoscopy. The book reviews the history of screening for colon cancer, how virtual colonoscopy was developed, and how it could fit into screening programs in the future. The text portion of the book also covers topics such as the preparation of the patient, obtaining and displaying the images, problem solving with virtual colonoscopy, rate of other incidental findings, and issues of radiation dose. The second half of the book is a collaboration of the editor with the other authors to present representative images of normal anatomy, polyps, cancers, and artifacts.
Assessment: This book is a very useful introduction to virtual colonoscopy. The text portion of the book is very informative and provides a wealth of information on a relatively new radiological examination. The atlas portion of the book provides a much needed pictorial reference for radiologists who are new to the field of virtual colonoscopy, with 2-D and 3-D images.
