描述
"From psychological suspense and historical fiction to "gentle reads" and romance, this comprehensive guide from expert readers' advisor Joyce Saricks explores the many worlds of fiction. Covering fifteen popular genres, the chapters include a definition of the genre, its characteristics (such as characterization, story line, and frame), and its key authors and subgenres. To help you prepare for the eternal "can you recommend a good book on ..." question, there are also reader interview tips, reference sources, and guidelines on how to prepare for the questions you will undoubtedly get." "The Readers' Advisory Guide to Genre Fiction offers hands-on strategies for librarians who want to become expert at figuring out what their readers are looking for and how to match great books up to those interests."--BOOK JACKET.
VOYA Drawing upon the concept of appeal elements developed in her earlier book Reader's Advisory Service in Public Libraries (ALA, 1989), Saricks explores fifteen popular fiction genres to provide librarians with a practical resource that will increase their effectiveness as readers' advisors. Each genre, from adventure to literary fiction, is given its own chapter in which the genre is defined, its characteristics and appeal to its fans are described, key authors and subgenres are discussed, the preparation needed to work with readers is detailed, and tips on the readers' advisory interview are offered. A few sure bets, or authors and titles Saricks has found to be popular with fans of that genre, are included and a list of reference sources for the genre is provided. Although some might quibble about Saricks's choice of one particular author or title over another within a specific genre, her book is intended not as "a definitive study but as a guide" and will serve as an excellent introduction to each of these fiction genres. With the exception of a few juvenile titles used as examples, this resource concentrates on adult fiction, but librarians in public and most high school libraries still will want a copy in their reference collections. Many of the adult fiction genres covered, such as horror, fantasy, and suspense, are popular with older teens, and among the adult authors discussed are perennial young adult favorites Stephen King, Michael Crichton, Terry Brooks, and Mary Higgins Clark. Distinguished by Sarick's sharp wit and keen knowledge of her subject, this book is perhaps the most useful readers' advisory resource published since the original edition of Betty Rosenberg'sGenreflecting appeared in 1982 (Libraries Unlimited). Index. Appendix. 2001, ALA Editions, 460p, $38 pb. Ages Adult. Reviewer: John Charles
