"Modern" hexacoordinated phosphorus chemistry essentially started in 1963 when Allcock and coworkers studied the reaction of phosphonitrilic chlorides with pyrocatechol and isolated the unexpected tris(benzenediolato)phosphate anion 1 (Fig. 1) which sees a central octahedral phosphorus bound to six oxygen atoms [1-4].
