Returning home from the Civil War, wounded, John Burke discovers that his wife and daughter have just died in a smallpox epidemic. His eleven-year-old son, Ollie, becomes his companion as well as a cover in spying-out enemy troops for the Union Army. One night, alone and grieving in the dark woods, John prays to God for a new family. God demonstrates His provision by placing six-year-old Cindy, who has been kidnapped and orphaned by Army deserters, in their path to rescue. Moreover, romance blossoms as Cassie Martin assists John in his spy missions with her expert riding and accurate marksmanship. The adventures of this courageous family will capture the hearts of readers, young and old.<br>
