The book is written by a WW2 survivor, who witnessed the very beginning of the war in the Soviet Union and tells the story through the eyes of a child, who goes through the fear, hunger, losses, sadness and tragedies, who is toughened by the experience, but is also very forgiving and understanding, supersensitive to kindness and eager to see the joy and beauty of life. This combination makes the family story very touching. The story is told in the context of the events in the USSR at the time. The book is very readable, and you can imagine the events described vividly. The author tries to analyze the actions of the Russian and Soviet leadership and answer the main question, that tortured her all her life: was such a long and bloody war a fatal inevitability or an error of judgement and a crime on the part of the Soviet leadership. While reading the book you can find out about the life in Ukrainian countryside before the revolution, the life and economic policy in the early days of the Soviet Union, the tragic agricultural policy of Stalin, the repressions, the war in Spain and Finland, the Soviet preparation for war and the style of different military commanders. All these events are brought close and personal to the reader through the description of some outstanding personalities of the time and the family experience. The book is thought-provoking as the author tries to present her heroes from different points of view and paint a balanced picture.
